Seated somewhere between fashionably late and cool, J'iura reclined against Dannath's mottled black legs with something that may have been a wineskin. An eyebrow had risen at the first mauling, followed by the other when a second candidate was hit. Looking up at Dannath, he didn't need to verbalize the question, for the black only snorted. The little brown has style, as does the queen. You shouldn't need additional eyebrows.
Next to them, Kelvari was sitting on the edge of her seat egging the young queen into going back and finishing the job.
"MORE BLOOD! C'MON!"
Kelvari, heart of my heart.
'Whatdyawant, I'm watching a show here."
You shouldn't encourage such antics in a young queen.
"Says the dragon who tore up the place when he hatched. C'MON! GO LITTLE ONE! GO!"
Staring down at his rider, Sakath sighed and readjusted his wings, content to watch, and ignore the hooting and hollering emanating from his crossed forelegs.

Akaya winced as the girls below on the sands attempted to reach to touch the gold, much to the hatchling's displeasure. Their thoughts didn't quite seem to her pleasure either, as started literally knocking a few of them down. The sands couldn't be pleasant to land on, and even if the queen was remarkably measured in her force and avoiding injury to the girls...well, the experience likely wasn't pleasant either. The brown bounding behind the queen resembled nothing so much as a very large canine, quick to nose and reassure where the queen was quick to discipline.

Aeri continued to pay no mind to the brown. He seemed to be taking this event far too lightly. Should he not be looking for His, rather that following the queen around? His behavior reminded her of that orbiting green. Their lack of focus did not bode well for the future capacity of their riders. Some might find them cute, but that did not matter when the Red Star hung in the sky. Cute would not help fight thread. Cute would not support Trine Weyr.
She almost scoffed when some of her peers attempted to touch the gold. Apparently she was not the only one who still hoped to Impress. Still, she did not dare do something so childish. First of all, it was futile. Petting the luminous dragonette would not make her choose you. Secondly, it was impudent. What right did they have to bother her? None. Not unless they Impressed her. Thirdly, stepping out of line would break “Aeri’s” character. She was supposed to be shy and weak willed. That role confined her to standing still and acting nervous.
As confident and powerful as Aeri fancied herself to be, she could not stop her heart from quaking when the luminous egg stared her down. Was this it? Was this an Impression? Yes, but no. Suddenly, the large hatching lunged forward pinning her to the ground. For a moment Aeri was too surprised to think. She wasn’t hurt, so this wasn’t an “attack”. There was more behind this… was that hatchling… seriously… was that sharding dragon trying to “put her in her place”? This was the end of her untarnished respect for the queen.
A white hot anger boiled through Aeri’s system. She had been treated like this her entire life – like she was nothing, a pushover, unimportant. That she should be stepped on once again NOW, at her first Hatching, in a time that was supposed to be HER moment, was unbearable. The queen had moved on, and at this point Aeri was almost certain that she was not Hers, but the passionate candidate could not let her indignation go.
Forgetting to act meek and kind, she sat up the moment she was free. When he tried to console her, she shot the rocky band brown a poisonous glare. She did not need sympathy. Not from someone like him. With that she hissed after the queen, every inch of her frustration and arrogance burning in her tone, “Don’t you dare underestimate me! Not you, who has only just been born!” You may be stronger than me, but you’re definitely not better than me.
Aeri understood that her sharp words would probably get her mauled. She did not care. Being tackled so shamelessly was a thousand times worse in her mind than the potential that she might not Impress. If she was killed or rendered too bloody to continue to stand, it did not matter. If Hers resided in one of the last two eggs, she would not be worthy of him or her if she did not speak up for herself. If not, then, well… what did she have to lose?
It did not matter that other girls were receiving the exact same treatment. Aeri was above this. Aeri would fight for herself, even if doing so was folly (and it sure as hell was now).

The gold tilted her head as Aeri's ranting reached her, looking over at the girl with a hiss and swirling of dangerously red-orange eyes as she turned, tail lashing and talons cutting into the nearby Nawa as she used the nearest person as a support to turn and face the girl. There was no charge, no spitting, hissing run, only the sleek stalking of a predator as the gold dropped her head and started towards Aeri with a deadly look in her eyes. This queen was tolerant of many things, but it seemed the girl's outburst had rubbed the young one entirely the wrong way. The brown chirruped his disapproval but a sharp look from the gold hatching silenced him and he decided that maybe this was one spot he didn't want to be the center of attention for. Blood was apparently going to be shed, and the gold's refined actions were far less so as she tore through the Candidates, shouldering and snapping her way back towards Aeri. However, the little gold's steps were halted as Brakiath's much large foot and leg came down between the two, a roar of disapproval echoing around the Sands. The Senior Queen's gaze remained fixed on the little one until she finally huffed and turned, headed back into the thick of the girls. Brakiath didn't immediately move, however, as she lowered her head to flash dagger-teeth at Aeri the cool command of a queen echoing in the girl's mind, Challenge another hatchling and you will be removed. Though you have fire in you, little one, it would be ill advised to let it burn chaotically.Ordered to find Hers, the young gold watched as her mother hovered over Aeri for a moment then retreated, a displeased-looking Abigail standing near the gold's bed with her arms crossed. When was the last time a Candidate had seen fit to challenge a hatchling? Crazy, even if it was admirable. Shaking her head, the Weyrwoman turned her gaze back to the gold. Rumbling and fairly pulsing with aimless intent, the Gold wandered for several moments, the brown tagging along beside her, trying (and failing) to bring some sort of direction to the queen. She was fairly burning with energy and emotion and so it was that when she finally found hers, the gold stopped suddenly and looked up at Narisa with big, passionate eyes, Your Cephieth is hungry Narisamine. Feed me.That was all she said as she waited a moment for hers to come along, leaving the brown with center stage. It took a moment for him to realize this and he crooned happily when he did, capering about the girls before zooming over to the boys. Whatever and however he Impressed was sure to be eye catching.

Nawa's head jerked up when the first girl the gold had knocked down had the audacity - the stupidity - to reprimand the dragonet, and she stared agape at the scene that then played out. How could anyone be so idiotic? You didn't do anything, anything at all to make an unbonded dragon unhappy. She was relatively new and she knew that! They could hurt and kill you even if you didn't give them a reason to! Not to mention it was Queen, so even without the threat of mauling, it was just plain disrespectful.
Imagine her surprise when she, not the offending girl, was cut into by the Queen's talons when the young gold whipped around to face Aeri. She staggered back with a yelp and a wince, a combination of shocked and indignant and hurt. Why her?!

Lena made sure to get very far out of the gold's way at the combination of the young candidate's hissed challenge and the gold's dropped head, purposeful stalk. Bad things were about to happen, and would have happened no doubt, save for intervention of the senior queen and mother of the hatchlings. Lena winced at the roar, likewise wary of Brakiath's foot on the sands separating the two who otherwise would've begun a fight. Honestly, first the green and blue of earlier, now the gold hatchling herself and a candidate... The ones that weren't sweet tempered in this clutch ran to the other extreme, it seemed.
Still, the gold did seem to find Hers--and it was a girl Lena recognized! One of the vitner-craft women from the candidate party...Peradan'd gotten the green earlier, so this was...Narisa, she was fairly sure. And off they went, or at least the gold went, expecting Hers to follow.
And then the brown was left with center stage. A smile found its way back onto Lena's lips as she watched him caper, then take off towards the boys. Surely one would be of good humor enough to take care of him?

Cetalese tensed when the Gold turned and made a straight line back towards the girl who had been foolish enough to say something-- Cetalese was too far to hear what it was. Sensing her rider's distress, Halith turned her head to see what was disturbing her and her green eyes became tinged with yellow. Before anything could be said, Brakiath stepped in with another air-splitting roar and put a stop to what could potentially have become a fatal mauling. Cetalese remained still and tense until after the Gold and her crooning Brown companion had turned to look for the Gold's partner.
What happened? She wondered to herself, and ended up with an answer. Hearing Halith's voice so suddenly when she was unused to having people respond to her thoughts made her jump slightly.
Cephieth did not like being challenged. The yellow was fading from her eyes, and it was gone completely by the time Ceta saw the Gold stop moving by Narisa. She was a Candidate Cetalese recognized, if only in passing. Very quietly, though Cetalese was pretty sure she was the only one who could hear her beloved, Cetalese heard Halith continue, I think she just needs to get the sand out of her rear end.
The green-eyed girl looked abruptly at her Green. She would never have thought of saying something so... crude. Halith, be polite.
Well! I do think that! Halith defended. Despite the offensive remark, Cetalese did begin to stroke her eyeridge again and Halith seemed to take that as an 'apology accepted.'

Pipith and his rider were equally stunned by the female Candidate's backsassing of the young gold, and Pipith especially was pleased when Brakiath put the girl in her place. Set'al was just happy that it kept her from getting mauled - foolish or not, he didn't want to see anyone get hurt...or worse. There was a definite possiblity that the hatchling Queen could have killed her for the insolence. Dragonets had killed for less, or even by accident.
But, since nothing dire came of the incident, Set'al could be entertained by it rather than horrified.

Honestly, G'brel couldn't quite believe what she had just seen. "What kind of shardin' deadglow challenges a queen?!? And a riderless one at that!" That was just begging to be killed! Seriously, what on Pern had she been thinking? That the gold would suddenly change her mind by the display and run back to her side all happy-like? Shards no! Who the crap picked her as a Candidate? Having an inner fire was one thing, but that level of stupidity should not be allowed to Impress. No. Let's see her go yell at some Thread and see how it responses, shall we? Surely it would just fly right back up into the sky, terrified.
Lifth wasn't amused by all too much, but his rider's thought train right then managed to do the trick. Actually that could be quite entertaining. She'd have saved many times riders the Thread-score.
Oh, shush, Lifth. It was sarcasm.
And quite heavy sarcasm at that. I'm sure she will get her dues in time. As it was, being scolded by the senior queen was quit bad enough.

Akaya, like many, was rather horrified by the whole affair on the sands, not the least of Brakiath having to step in--quite literally! This was the sort of thing songs were sung of, yes...but the sort of thing you'd throw in a Teaching Ballad so as to remember it was a really bad idea. Shards, what had the girl been thinking? Not that Akaya'd been able to hear what she said, but the tone had been clear enough. She looked young, yes, but there was young and foolish, and then there was 'not going to survive to reproduce' young and foolish... (well, not that reproduction wasn't more or less moot in the weyr anyway, as it more came down to who wasn't hopping between a lot and who didn't feel like doing so or asking to do so)
She glanced to her neighbor in the stands, S'koi, to see if even the quiet greenrider showed any reaction to events. She figured if S'koi reacted, that was when you knew it was bad.

It was remarkable the girl hadn't been mauled. Gauden was standing now with his arms crossed across his chest, staring at the girl who had almost lost her life. It was only Brakiath's intervention that had saved her, and it didn't look as if the Candidate had gotten away entirely unreprimanded. Even not being born in a weyr, Gauden knew better than to speak that way to any dragon, let alone the most respected color of the weyr. She deserved the tongue lashing she'd likely gotten, and whatever came to her from O'rer once the Hatching was over, too.
Assured that the girl's trouble was her own fault, Gauden watched the Brown barrel towards the boys now that his job of being with the Gold was done. Had he already picked out where his Chosen was and thus didn't need to take as long as the Gold had? Based on his behavior so far, Gauden found himself looking toward Ruven. Would the boy who had been shunned by the Bronze earlier end up with the extra large Brown?

S'koi watched the young queen's interactions with the female Candidates carefully, evaluating as she went along. That first girl though... He could not hear what was said from where they sat, but it was clear from her body-language and expression that it was likely venomous. Sure enough, the gold turned then, and as soon as she had lowered herself into a stalking stance he knew things wouldn't end well. It was very fortunate for female Candidate that Brakiath had stepped in at the last moment, but that did not lessen the severity of the situation any.
The young girl is foolish, Laith observed, eyes remaining on her rather than on the Impressing gold.
Exceedingly so. His expression settled into the fainted of grim frowns, though it was not overly different from his neutral 'observing' expression from before. He rather hoped she would not act out in such a manner again in the future. There was no guarantee she could be saved next time.

The brown now took full advantage of all the eyes on him, padding through the boys with enthusiasm, taking moments here and there to regard potential people. And in true young-boy fashion, he was a little rougher and haphazard then need be - he was just so happy with himself. Hip checking some, or prodding others with his nose, the brown moved from boy to boy chirruping.
Brakiath, mildly annoyed at having to step in yet again this hatching, shuffled listlessly where she lay, rumbling at the brown to hurry it on up while Abigail grasped her egg-breaking shovel and hoisted it onto her shoulder. Two eggs left, neither of which showed any motion whatsoever - it was a bad sign, really, but she rather hoped the two were just biding their time.

Nursing wounds new and slightly-less-new, Nawa watched the brown with some sense of detachment. He was a delight to watch, sure, but it was becoming harder to ignore that the Hatching was almost over, and she had no dragon. There were only two left, if the dragonets inside them were still alive. They couldn't be true duds, not with the clear personalities they'd had at the Touching, but who knew? If not one of them, maybe next time, but would there be a next time? It was something she'd have to think about when this was over.

Allaxon was admiring the huge brown hatchling when the girl challenged the young queen. Was she crazy he muttered to himself? Did she see the claws? Had she felt the gold sense of rank pooring off her while she was still in the shell at the touching? Silly silly girl. Soon Brakiath stepped in just when it looked like the young queen was going to eat the girl. Allaxon sighed he didn't want anyone to get hurt but the girl seemed to have no sense of preservation about her at all. He smiled broadly when the molten gold hatchling impressed. He almost laughed when the brown figured out it was his turn for the spotlight. Then the brown came toward the boys and Allaxon almost drooled. He watched the dragon as he poked and prodded the boys. He wondered who the brown would choose a recluse or a boy who held the same attention grabbing nature, it was a conundrum that he was most interested to see. The dragon looked pleasant to be around and he would like to befriend the rider at a later date.
