The first glancing blow of the bat against one of the creatures' jaws gave her hope, a steady influx of adrenaline starting to flood her system again, spurring her onward. The first had been simple -- he'd been out in front a little, an easy target as she'd rushed forward, picking it off like a lion might pick off a sickly gazelle, or some poetic s**t like that. But as the first one fell, five more quickly took it's place, and she realized quickly how stupid it was for her to have gone into close-combat with the sheer volume of monsters that were threatening to overtake her now. Even as Petra raised her bat again to swing at one of the creatures reaching a black, clawed hand towards her, she could see in her peripheral vision as others began to surround her. Soon, she would be swallowed up completely, drowned in these things, or worse, the acid she had seen burn through flesh.

There was a momentary feeling of fleeting panic, eerily distant from the forefront of her mind, sort of like a vague little memo that 'oh god, you should probably be worried' that was completely drowned out by the icy adrenaline pumping through her veins. Still, it was there, and as she swung her bat, Petra realized she had swung just a hair too early, missing one of the monster's faces by half a second. But that half a second was enough. Clawed fingers closed on the end of her bat, pulling on it as if trying to tear it away from her, just as Caelius had warned. Take away a hunter's weapon, and they thought she was useless. Well, she wasn't a hunter yet -- she was a trainee, and without a weapon she would be worse than useless... she'd be dead. So she fought, fought with everything she had, her body twisting a she tried to wrench the bat away from the multiple hands that had now grabbed it, feeling hands start to grab onto her clothes, attempting to pull her into the swarm. In that moment, she considered screaming, but she held it down. What would screaming do? Give them satisfaction? Let the others know she was about to die?

Like hell.

The sound of a gunshot, followed closely by a bullet whizzing nearby almost made her jump, startled by the closeness. Within a second, one of the creatures had fallen, collapsing on top of several of the others which had been trying to restrain her. She took advantage of this opportunity, ripping her bat away from the hoard and retreating quickly back beyond the line, to where Hanna, Scarlett and Scott were standing. Although it hadn't occurred to her in the heat of battle, it had been Hanna's voice she'd heard call her name, she was sure, and as she leaned a little on the bat, panting a bit more out of nervousness than exhaustion, she lifted her eyes to look up at the other girl, gratification written all over a normally blank expression. "Thanks..." she half muttered, hoping the sincerity rang through -- Hanna might have just saved her life.

Madison hadn't managed to land a single strike prior to this moment - instead, she'd gotten her bat tangled in the fabric and straps of her bag, spending several desperate minutes trying to get it out. At last, she took hold of the bat and lashed the thing back and forth, fear breaking over her in waves - and, with a tearing sound, the bag was flung free, liberating the bat itself for her use.

She didn't see where the bag landed; instead, she whirled, dimly aware that at some point she'd broken into a cold sweat and half her hair had come out of its ponytail. She couldn't focus on what the monster was doing - only that it had one of them. Not one of her Phoenixes, thank god, but the other trainees were her team too...

Still, there seemed to be a good number of people around the beast now. Hands shaking, Madison dropped the hard-won bat and took up her pistol instead, aware of the new threat drawing around them. Second wave...

Her hands were shaking too much. Again. The shot went wild, though thankfully it didn't strike any of the other trainees.

Oh, god - how was she going to handle this? She felt like she was going to throw up. And this is what she was going to do for the rest of her life?!

It was almost enough to make her long for the pod she'd apparently come from. Just for a moment, before the idiocy of such a longing caught up with her. I'd rather rot in a coma than fight?

As. If!

Madison took a deep, shuddering breath, and aimed her gun once more, trying to ground herself. She wouldn't have been chosen if they hadn't thought she had potential, right?

She stood there for several seconds, focusing on her target - then she fired, automatically adjusting for the gun's recoil. That, at least, she was getting the hang of, even if the gun still felt unwieldy and... off, somehow. Her target flinched, one arm stretching away from the torso as if it were now only held on by strings.

"Gotcha," Madison muttered, then swallowed hard to keep down the bile.

Several other trainees had rushed forward to help the boy - Gale, that was his name. If he joined them, he'd be just as likely to hit one of his allies; instead, Jordan flicked the safety onto his gun and stuffed it into his pack, digging out the bat instead. It wasn't his hammer, but it'd do; it was more like it than the gun, a more personal weapon than the bullets.

He moved up to meet the oncoming wave of things, using his momentum to swing at the first one that came into reach. The dull thud of contact was much more satisfying than the roar and jolt of the gun.

Well, things were certainly taking a turn for the worse. One of their own was being taken and from the looks, and smell of it, they were- "Idiots." The acid would hurt them all, why would they go heading into it? As much as he wanted to help-- the needs-- the survival of the majority was greater than the hope for one. "Cass, you moron you're-" He grumbled, watching the girl to to boy's aid. s**t, just when they needed their 'leader' he was no where to be found. He debated pulling out his gun, trying to fix it but- "Oh ******** me." His instinct screamed at him to go for the horde rushing them, but if they let one die, who knew the consequences? Another more powerful monster, freshly fed? Another thing added to the horde?

He ran into the burning acid, the stench almost causing him to retch himself at this close. Pain shot up and down his body as he felt it his skin and burn and eat away. He gave Cass a look as he struck at the thing, missing, the acid making him wince again. "If the is like the movies, I expect a proper reward when this is over." He looked at the others shooting and going for the horde still coming. "I swear, if you don't cover us and we die I will haunt the ******** out of you."

That was damned well better. He hadn't done much, but he'd at least given the thing pause, if briefly. Jordan gritted his teeth and swept the bat back, then forward again. It grazed the thing in front of him, making it stagger again, though little more than that. Too light, he thought stupidly. Correct for it. Can't use the weight - gotta be your swing, not momentum -

The creatures were moving in, pressing towards the trainees. Jordan held his ground stubbornly. He wasn't going to let the things past easily; they'd have to go through him.

"I'm trying!" Madison shot back to the man who had threatened haunting - not unkindly, but the words were shot through with a weird mixture of panic and determination.

Anyway, haunting and crap belonged to... to them, right? The things they were trying to drop? Ugh! She didn't ever, ever want to end up like that. Disgusting. Worse than dead and gone.

A-One - Jordan - was near her, she realized abruptly. Helping stand up to the horde, but doing it in a much more direct fashion. "H-how's it holding up, boss?" she called out, shakily. She kept tracking targets with the muzzle of her gun, though nothing felt likely enough to waste another bullet on.

((ooc: using phone to post. Will edit in info after rolling. Forgive typos and stuff.))

Teal eyes widened in horror as Before let out an ear-piercing shriek, "After! Noooooooo!!!" Unmindful of the acid and of the damage it would cause, Before rushed to help his fellow Beta. While they were technically no longer divided and were supposed to act as a single unit, Before was the sentimental sort. Not that he wouldn't brave the dangers for the others if needed but that wasn't the case right now, was it? He raised his bat, and swung right as the acid breath struck him. Right in the face. With an equally high-pitched scream he stumbled, wiping furiously at his eyes.

A familiar voice, addressing him - A-Two, his memory filled in automatically. No. Madison. He risked a glance back, giving her a smile, if a harried one. "Keepin' it real," he called back. "Keep me covered, okay?"

He turned back to the horde, ready to swing again once he got the space and angle. It made him feel better to know that he had backup - not that all of them weren't fighting for the same goal, the same purpose, but knowing that someone was there and helping him - yeah, that helped.

Cassandra had nearly bumped into Marcus when she recoiled from the burning on her arms, looking to him with a pained look on her face. s**t.
"s**t, that hurt more than taking my own head off." she grumbled, readjusting her grip on the bat.

"Well y'know what, how about we both survive all of this s**t, then the nation-of-Cass can arrangement a settlement with the nation-of-Marcus on what I owe you for helping me out, deal?" She attempted to grin like it was a joke, but frankly she'd probably kiss the first person (and possibly cry on them as well) she possibly could after surviving what felt like the zombie apocalypse. If only out of relief. Cassandra again swung her bat....

only to miss and hit herself in the knee, hissing and nearly dropping herself right into the digestive-acid-stuff.

More swearing followed.

Before whimpered as pain-induced tears and his equally stinging fingers wiped away the gunk from his face. He didn't need a mirror to tell him he wasn't going to be winning any Best Looks awards or be on the cover of GQ magazine. Not that he would have prior to taking flesh-melting spit to the face. Unfortunatley, this meant he was swinging blind and in frustration, he jammed his bat into the ground to steady himself. Leaning on the makeshift cane with one hand, the other clumsily undid the laces to his boot. Yes, it was the return of the Booterang. With a sharp jerk of his leg, the footwear sailed clean off Before's foot. A satisfying THWACK! followed and since there was no accompanying ow from his teammates, it meant he'd hit the thing that grabbed After. Unfortunately, Before put his sock-clad foot down right into a puddle of the acidic goo. Needless to say he stumbled backward and fell flat on his a**.

Ennéa had stood and stared at the advancing horde. It was unreal, like something out of a horror movie. One shambling horror was fine, she could handle that, wave upon wave of them though... She froze.

All around her Ennéa could hear her teammates shouting and trying to fight but it was distant somehow, muffled, as if she were underwater. She stared, unfocused and unmoving.

Then one of the leading monstrosities snaked out its horrible tongue and *grabbed* one of the other hunters. Ennéa blinked, eyes refocusing. He wasn't a Phoenix, but -- the pale haired hunter struggled and screamed out in pain.

Ennéa twitched and found herself taking a step toward the monster. She quickly shook her head, trying to clear her buzzing mind. Focus. She needed to focus. That thing would catch her too if she didn't and then where would she be? She looked worriedly at the captured hunter.

She didn't have her gun. Ennéa looked around distractedly for it. Did she drop it somewhere? Oh wait, she had a bat. Ennéa frantically rummaged through her pack for it.

Ennéa couldn't remember the hunter's name; she had been so distracted by her old squad she hardly knew any of the other non-phoenix hunters' names. But they were now a part of her squad too, kinda? Weren't they? They all were hunters together.

She wiped her sweaty palms and then charged at the monster, swinging her bat around as hard as she could.

It was a glancing blow. Ennéa had shut her eyes at the last moment and miscalculated her swing. She took a step back and winced as some of the creature's acid spittle splashed on her leg, leaving angry burns on her skin. "Ow. Ow. Ow."

Well, that hadn't gone very well, but Ennéa was determined. She had to help. She had to try, at least. Why else was she here if she didn't?

Ennéa hopped about, shaking her leg and trying to ignore the pain caused by the creature's acid spit. It hurt worse than that one time she had been tried to make box macaroni and wound up spilling most of a pot of boiling water on herself. Or that other time she had accidentally stabbed herself in the leg with a pencil. That hadn't been fun.

This though was a whole other level of not fun. Several levels below, in fact. Ennéa scowled at the monster. Some day, she would learn how to handle all spooks and shadows -- not just the small ones that skulked and creeped about in the corners and were easily cowed if you stood your ground. Big ones *and* multiple ones too, like that... oh crap, like that alarmingly massive horde... headed their way....

Ennéa quailed for a moment at the sight but then shook her head, tightening her grasp on her bat. No. Don't get distracted, she mentally chided herself.

Someday, she would be able to bravely handle anything. She'd keep her promise. "Face what scares you and laugh." Ennéa muttered to herself.

Just laugh. Ennéa chuckled wryly at the memory. "Not quite the same as facing the garbage chute monster, Tobias. But I'll try my best... I promise."

She ran towards the monster once again; the long baseball bat was reassuring in her grip, almost like the axe in that hazy weird dream she had. She closed her eyes and swung hard, twisting her shoulders and putting her full force behind the swing. This time, it hit the monster solidly, impacting with a satisfying meaty thud.

Ennéa cracked an eye open and laughed in disbelief and delight as the creature staggered. "Yeah!" she pumped her fist, not caring, or even really noticing, that some of the creature's acid spittle had sprayed upon her when she struck it. "Woo-hoo~"

He clenched his teeth as the acid burned his senses. The sight, the small, the feeling, it was assaulting and revolting and really, he wanted to sort of just up and abandon the guy. He was a stranger, but god damn he'd see this to the end, whatever tha end maybe. Looking at what held his 'teammate' Marcus hoped that wasn't their fate. But, it looked like they'd solved the issue and the ******** if he was staying in acid. The girl that yelled back at him did get herself a glare. "Try harder then!" He hissed, grabbing Cass by the arm attempting to pull her away and out of the acid.

"Here is the first arrangement: You stop running into ******** acidic bile. Our second arrangement?" He shoved his bat back into his bag grabbing the gun. A quick pop of the magazine was all it needed to fix it.
BANG He hit one of them in the distance. "You be more careful, if not running into acid hitting yourself- Tch." He did slightly smirk at her. "We survive this, I'll think of more arrangements. Which just for the record, sounds like you're hitting on me." he muttered the rest to himself. "The national body of Cass and the national body of Marcus...Hey, if you're offering."

... Shouldn't they try to save Gale first? She would do the same for them, as exclusive and dramatic as they were before - they are still part of the same 'group' of hunters. Then again, keeping back the horde of... Monstrosities from overwhelming them is important too. This whole deal is just messed up - at least, in a horrible and twisted way, this is teamwork?

"s**t. GALE, TRY AGAIN! Shake yourself loose or something! I'm not sure how long they can keep the rest of them back!" She yelled, not quite sure what to make of the whole Gale-yelling-for-Bosssssss thing. He might as well have replaced 'Boss' with 'Mummy', the way he was yelling that.

And then she saw it. A single boot sailing through the air, hitting the creature that had held Gale captive. For some reason, a voice in her head screamed 'BOOT TO THE HEAD' in a British accent before she turned around to see who could be stupid enough to-

... Of course. Before. Never not Before.

"YOU IDIOT," She rushed over, pulling him off the ground, staring at his semi-corroded foot with a frown as she slung one of his arms around her shoulder to help provide temporary support. The burns on her arms hurt every time she moved, but she refused to let it show except for the occasional wince, "I don't want anyone to have to end up saving you on top of what we're already dealing with right now."

She did, however, shot a semi-grateful look at anyone who rushed in to help. Oh, and to the girl who managed to get a solid hit in - short purple hair, name starts with an E or something - she grinned, "Awesome hit!"
