Below Asami, teaming with life and motion, a great oasis spred out through the red sands, small bushs and large palm trees made for a mystical sight surrounding the water pool that provided the scarce resource, and allowing for this large selection of life.
Through the palm leaves, Asami would see lots of motion, small rabbits, mice, and many other creatures would go about their lives. Insects buzzed and chirped, and frogs could be heard croaking.
from her viewpoint she would notice several larger areas of movement, and through the palms one of these would reveal a strange and exciting new creature. though from the distance, some details were still unclear.
Posted: Tue Jun 30, 2015 7:42 am
With the distance separating her from these new creations she began to walk towards them. Knowing nothing of how they were yet almost uncaring. Due to the fact that no matter what she was going to be able to handle herself. With each step she left a foot print in the sands. With each step the more of these creatures looked at her. Tilting their heads in various ways curious as to what she herself was.
She didn't know why they were looking at her in such ways. After all they had to have seen humans before shouldnt' they have? There couldn't be any possibly way that they didn't know what she was. Or were they trying to lure her in with her curiosity? Whatever the case may be she was going to continue her mission. Whether or not if they were dangerous to her or not.
She got to the point where she was probably about twenty feet away from them. Holding her hand out to them to see whether or not they were a danger to her. As well as showing them that she was not dangerous in any way.

"So it was out here, was it?" Bast mumbled to herself as she peered into the orichalcum mine. The map she had gotten from the guard was littered with red X-marks leading from the Village to her current location, with none actually inside the Village itself. The closest they got were a couple of miles out. What was more, they were all underground. She always felt as though something was moving beneath her whenever she passed over one of the marked spots. It wasn't a tactile sensation, though; it was closer to the feeling of butterflies in one's stomach. It was the same sort of feeling that she felt when she was fighting the giant salamander in Takumi, but slightly different. That thought made her realize that she hadn't reported the salamander yet, so she jotted down some notes while standing under one of the Hoatzins' wings. In the meantime, her golems started checking some of the mining equipment.
Report on Strange Aquatic Salamander Proposed Name: Leviathan Encountered in a deep river in Takumi. Had gray skin, four legs, and a very long tail that never left the water. Has the ability to absorb Chakra from Ninjutsu attacks. Very slow, but makes up for it in defenses. Seemingly unaffected by blunt attacks, but reacted violently to sharp weaponry. Caution highly advised. Suggested threat level to a Shinobi Village: S-Rank. Specimen was killed by UHV weaponry. Whereabouts of the carcass unknown.
She then sent a copy of the report back to Sunagakure. After a few moments of thought, she re-copied the report and marked it for Masahiro as well. The climate around the Leaf was much more conducive to such a beast's existence, and if they were to be working together, it made sense to share such information.
For now, though, she pocketed the report and its copy, intending to send it along with the shipment of orichalcum. Keeping her attention on the strange feeling she was getting from the ground below, she descended a short way into the mine with the Princess. Once there, she spent about an hour hacking chunks of stone off of the wall with a pickax. It was backbreaking work. That is, it would have been, if the woman had not decided early on to use a good portion of her strength in each swing to get as much as possible out of the mine. When the Princess had carried up a significant amount of rock, the woman stopped and exited the mine.
The wind may have been fierce, but it did little to abate the heat of the sun. The woman's alabaster skin prickled under the fierce rays. Not for long, though; her Hoatzin golems lined up and formed a tent over the pile of recovered stone with their wings. Of the immediately evident materials, orichalcum was by far the most prominent, followed by coal. She sorted these materials out and sent them to Masahiro, along with a note and the copy of her report on the Leviathan:
"Masahiro,
Enclosed you will find a shipment of orichalcum and coal. Additionally, there is a report on a creature I encountered a while back as well. It was a strange beast, and I encourage you to look over my notes.
- Bastet"
((Sent: 50 lbs. orichalcum, 16 lbs. coal.))

The remainder of the rocks from the first dig contained little of value. Somewhat reassured by the haul from the first time, though, Bast descended into the mine once more and started chipping away at the wall. She didn't think Masahiro had specified how much orichalcum he needed, so she decided to keep going at it until she got the okay to stop.
At least it isn't hot down here, she thought. A chunk of the wall fell off and into the Princess' waiting arms. At least I've got help, of a sort.
Tink, tap, thud, crumble. The strikes of her pickax marked the passing seconds. She fell into a rhythm, knocking off rocks every ten seconds. Then the Princess would come down and take them away every minute or so. Every dozen times this happened, the miner would stop and take a quick drink of tea. When her flask was empty, she sent Mononoke for water.
This kind of simple life wasn't so bad in Bast's eyes. She was out in a cool, spacious hole in the ground, far away from the troubles of Village life. Far from the bodies. As she emerged from the mine to clean off and paw through her spoils, she felt she could almost get used to this kind of work. That thought was compounded when, upon sifting through the rocks, she spotted a large, glowing, blue-green stone. She snatched it up and weighed it in her hand, then whistled. It was three-eighths of a pound of solid Gelel. It was a nice sample, too; perfect for use in variable marble creation. She pocketed the beauty of a sample and set the next 50 lbs. shipment of orichalcum aside.

Thud, thunk, crumble. This spot didn't seem to have much in the way of good stone, but Bast pressed on regardless. There was usually something good hiding among the orichalcum. Of course, the orichalcum was why she was here in the first place. This was all an effort to repay Masahiro for his shipment of wood. Even so, if she could find another Gelel Stone like the last one, she could go home with more than enough payment for her work.
The mine was rather poorly lit, the woman realized now that the day was wearing on. Her darkly tinted goggles were becoming a severe hindrance if she wanted to actually see anything. Luckily, mining was a fairly straightforward task.
She chipped away at the rock diligently. The wind howled over the entrance to the mine. The strange presence was far below her, and seemed to be resting.
I need to get a weapon made. Tink, tink, thud, crumble. Takumi is probably the best bet right now. I should head out there. No, I should stay nearby... I should send Mononoke out there.
The dig this time gave rather boring results. Aside from the orichalcum, there was a small amount of iron ore in the mix. She separated these out, cleaned them off, and put them with the rest of the shipment.

This pile of rocks was no good. In fact, Bast was having a tough time striking anything worthwhile. Whether she was just getting tired or had rotten luck, she wasn't even getting much orichalcum, let alone Gelel.
When Mononoke came back with water, it was a godsend. The woman ascended from the mine and took up a place under the Hoatzins and their wings. After a long swig from the jug of water, she turned to her golem and gave it a few new instructions.
"Okay. I want you to go to Takumi and ask them to make me a set of gauntlets. They have to inflict a lot of pain and do it efficiently. For appearances, I'm going to say white on blue, as normal." She opened her mouth to keep talking, then remembered that golems weren't exactly the most creative bunch. She pulled out a sheet of paper instead. She sketched first a pair of regular gauntlets, then an enlarged version off to one side. This sketch showcased sharpened studs. Then, next to that, she drew another sketch, this time of a glove with what looked to be antlers sprouting out of it. "Take this to Takumi and have them make it. If they ask for money, give them this."
The woman handed over about 1000 Ryou, then descended back into the mine as her golem ran off toward the horizon. A few minutes later she came up and sorted out a meager amount of orichalcum and a large amount of iron. The stench of the latter made her head swim, as it reminded her of the work she had performed earlier in the day.

The day wasn't half bad in the shade. Bast sat and sipped on water while looking out over the bright white sand. The Hoatzins kept their wings aloft, maintaining the pool of shade around her. It was quite relaxing, sitting out there all alone. Being away from the destruction meant peace for a while. In the end, though, she had to continue mining; it was why she had gone out there, after all.
Tap, tap, tap. Judging by the quality of the stones she was mining, she was back into the orichalcum vein. There was still a lot of plain rock, though. She mined away for a while, then went back up to the pile of rocks the Princess had hauled out of the mine.
"Hopefully Mononoke returns soon," she said aloud. None of the golems responded, which was normal. Talking to them was like talking to a wall. Nevertheless, talking was something to do, so she was going to do it. "That strange presence hasn't gone away. I wonder if I'm just being paranoid, but after the shadows in Takumi, I'd rather err on the side of caution."
She sorted out the dull, blue-green rocks from the rest and put them in a pile with the other specimens of their type. Masahiro had not responded yet. Normally she would have pursued that train of thought further, but the stench of the iron ore she was handling was getting to her. It reminded her of the Village. When she closed her eyes, she saw the bloody corpses strewn through the fallen buildings. When she was finished sorting, she took a swig of water and ordered her golems to stand guard while she relaxed for a bit to regain her energy.

Post 3/3 for Actual Mining! I Post 3/3 for Yuishiki [ Subjectivity ]
The gods of mining were not smiling upon the woman. It seemed that no matter where she turned, she found nothing but mundane rocks and minerals. There was plenty of coal, as always, but that wasn't why she was there. As the woman grew discouraged with her lack of success, she began to feel like stopping altogether. There was plenty of material lying around for both Masahiro and her, if she wanted any of it. As the Princess hauled out another load of rocks, Bast followed.
"None of the good stuff," she muttered while sorting out her finds. There was plenty of plain rock, but not much orichalcum. As she tossed the last bit of ore on the pile, she sat back and thought.
There had to be a way for her to concentrate on the task at hand. The scent of iron in the area was giving her flashbacks, and her own fatigue was beginning to sap at her work ethic. Mononoke wasn't back yet, so there was no one she could send for food quickly. Summoning herself back to the Village would mean, well, being near the Residential District. Perhaps, she thought, there was a way to place a seal on her perspective. It would be a Genjutsu, but she would think of it as a Fuuin first and foremost.
The woman traced out a formula in her mind, one that would bind her thoughts. She infused it with her knowledge of Genjutsu and bound it around a string of hand seals. Upon activating it after working out what she thought were all the kinks, she felt a dull pain at the center of her forehead, and the world suddenly seemed clearer.

The world seemed clearer. The pain around her forehead nagged her, but gently. It did not hurt so much as it grounded her to a different reality. As Bast chipped away at another wall, she felt relief from the thoughts of the Residential District. The yields this time were not much better, certainly, but that was fine. As long as she had something to focus on, it was fine.
Tap, tap, tap. Another pile of rocks. Another section of wall mined.

With a strike of the pickax, Bast hit pay dirt. A section of the wall fell away, revealing a great bounty of materials. The Princess started hauling the materials up while Bast sat and sorted them out in the shade.
Current tabulations of mined materials are only estimates. Full measurements will need to be taken upon delivery. Masahiro had better appreciate the size of this delivery. She thought these things silently as she sifted through the mined ores single-mindedly. The piles of stones around her were growing, particularly the orichalcum. It seemed she'd finally found another section of the vein that was worthwhile. Mononoke will return in a few hours. Maybe. If all went well. Then I can send her for food while I continue to work. Oh, and I should have her pick up a book as well. Something to read would be nice.
Sifting and sorting was boring work. Boring work that she was completely focused on, that is. Thanks to the seal she had placed on her perspective, she could scarcely concentrate elsewhere. Such was the prototype Jutsu, she figured. As soon as it waned, she'd make adjustments so that it wasn't as powerful. There was no need for something that robbed a person of their autonomy, at least in this situation.

Post 3/3 for Actual Mining! I
Mononoke arrived at the mining camp to find Bast practically throwing a fit over the ores she had just excavated. The golem's creator was holding up a tiny chunk of iron and dancing in place. It was clear that there was something wrong.
"Look, Mononoke!" the woman cried upon seeing the golem. "This is pure, uncut iron! Do you know how much this stuff goes for?! If I'm crazy for being excited about this, well, pinch me, because I'm dreaming!"
Mononoke did as she was told and pinched Bast's arm. After a few minutes of pained yelps, the woman calmed down, at which point she tossed aside the iron, extracted herself from Mononoke's grip, and shoved the rest of her meager findings into their respective piles.
