The sudden sounds of gunfire echoed around them. It surprised Xu, for he was expecting to be welcomed with open arms, not shooting firearms.
What's going on here?
Upon hearing Johann's command, Xu knew that now wasn't the time to be pondering this; They have to quell the threat first, ask questions later.
Any blame can be placed on Johann later, he thought jokingly.
Xu hurried into the direction of the gunfire; The direction of the building. He glanced up just in time to see Schraeder "blink" with Fin from the roof to the wired fence below. Xu ran towards them, careful of any stray shots that might come his way.
"So what do we do now? Do we attack first or try to find a more peaceful solution?" Xu questioned when he was in earshot of the two.
He put his hand into his bag, ready to "awaken" the vine at the first sign of a guard.

Adela felt very very confused. They were expected to go there, right? So why the offensive? Please tell me they're just running some sort of safety drill? Nope. It became apparent that the newcomers really were the targets. "Ffffffffffff......why us?"
She thought about what they could do, but wasn't coming up with any ideas. Well, I doubt they're going to listen to us. They probably will for Johann, but no one else. So the best thing we can do is defend. How're we going to do that? Schraeder could blink away; Finnegan could run away; Xu could hide in the forest and use it to the best of his ability. Adela? Pray to God that he will protect me and let me heal gunshot wounds quickly?
There was no use staying there. She followed after Xu and gave her opinion once Xu had asked the question. "They're not going to listen to us; they don't know us. Maybe if Johann could talk to them, we'd get somewhere. Best thing to do is defend ourselves. In fact," she looked at Xu, "Can you use your snake to be a lookout for us? That is, if you can 'cause I have no idea how your power works. You'll need to tell me later," she rambled. Whenever she got nervous, she'd ramble.

Xu shook his head, remembering to stay low as he did so.
"I'm sorry, but my vine can only see what I see. It has no sense of direction by itself." He made a mental note to see if he could remedy that later. But right now he had to focus on the situation at hand.
Adela was right. They needed to get out of the open. And fast! If the guards found them, conflict will ensue. And Xu didn't want to get into meaningless scrambles. Adela's idea of hiding themselves until Johann arrive was a good suggestion. But what could they do?
Pondering the thought, Xu came to a thought. "If we could get to a more thickly forested area, maybe I can cook something up. What I can do changes depending on my environment." He looked around, and saw that the forest was not too far off.
"If we can get in there, I might be able to conceal us," Xu suggested, pointing to a batch of trees in the forest's edge.

Johann said, "I'll check it out alone. No need to endanger you guys." He smiled and went off.
Schraeder put a hand on the shoulders of Xu and Adela, and they suddenly found themselves right at the treeline with a brief moment of vertigo. Schraeder dropped to his knees, coughing hard and squeezing his eyes shut. He ran out of breath and couldn't stop coughing deep-body coughs, but he waved the two of them ahead into the trees. It was clear that he'd be behind them.

Nuh-uh. Schraeder was not pulling this crap. "Vamanos, Schraeder." She tugged on his wrist to help him stand up. "Like hell if we're leaving you out here." Damn. He's running out of energy with all the porting going on. I wonder... Adela put her hands on Schraeder's chest and concentrated.
I know I can heal physical wounds. But I wonder if I can give people my own energy? She focused as hard as she could to give Schraeder some of her own energy to help him regain his strength. Maybe with being a healer, I can also be the Human Battery.

Xu shook his head slightly, clearing the small nausea that came with high speed travel. Why does this always happen to me?He thought to himself.
After his head cleared, Xu could see that they were now only a few feet from the treeline. When Schraeder started to cough, Xu briskly turned to face him. Schraeder was kneeling, coughing and wheezing. Adela was already by his side, probably seeing what she could do to help him.
"Blinking other people, in addition to himself, must've taken a toll on him," Xu whispered, though to no one in particular.
He looked up scanning the area for any immediate danger. A sigh of relief escaped him when he saw there was none. They were now a good distance away from the base, though it was still within sight. Xu could make out Johann walking confidently into the base. A thought of something happening to him flashed in Xu's mind, but he quickly discarded it. Johann could handle himself.
He brought his attention back to Adela and Schraeder. Adela had her hand on his chest, and was in deep concentration. Xu didn't want to disturb her while she tried to do whatever she was doing. He stood a few feet away from them, staying vigilante for any signs of danger. If any show, he seemed to be the only one who is in condition to handle it.

Energy flowed from Adela to Schraeder. What kind of energy, how, or in what quantity was unclear. Schraeder recovered... sort of. His condition had improved, but he was not substantially better.

Schraeder gasped as the energy entered his body. He was slightly less sore and his chest wasn't painfully tight. He took to his shaky feet, holding Adela's hand for support, and stumbled along behind them to the trees.
Once they made it to the trees, Schraeder looked to Xu to do whatever he had planned to do as he sank to the ground, panting. They needed a plan of action and they needed it soon.

Adela smiled in relief. Oh good. It worked. She didn't get to mentally pat herself on the back though, because Schraeder had grabbed her hand and dragged her further into the forest. "Vaya, you never rest do you?" Perhaps she spoke too soon; he sank to the floor and didn't let go of her hand. She ended up crouching so that they could still hold hands.
"Xu, can you provide cover for us here?" Maybe they could even hide in the trees. But first we have to get Schraeder on his feet. "Maybe if some soldiers come into the forest, we can somehow steal their guns?" Some form of long range weapon would be very very nice right about now.

"No..." Schraeder gasped. "No...we have to...get inside. They...when I was in there...with Fin...something's going on...inside." He took a deep breath, then another.
"Something happened, guys. I think it might be the Hosts, but they think we're the enemy. We have to get in and talk to the ones that were expecting us, so they can call off the guards. See?"
He rose shakily but fell into Adela, almost tipping them both over. She could feel that he was shivering intermittently, though it was hard to tell just by looking at him.

"The Hosts?" Pictures of the Host-Agents and Johann flashed through Xu's mind. Xu had been informed that the Hosts had powers similiar to the Host-Agents, though they are a lot more erratic. They should've not even be able to exist... Xu shook his head. He didn't want to know what could a vagabond groups of Hosts do to the general populace, if they got too hungry. Xu felt like he wanted to barf.
He returned from his daydream after hearing Schraeder's suggestion. "What do you suggest we do?" Xu asked. He glanced at the building, looking for any signs of Johann.
"Johann doesn't seem to be coming back yet. We could either wait for him, or try to get into the building ourselves." Xu tried weighing the decision in his head. Both options held their risks. If they waited, Johann could get into trouble, without any help. If they went in, they would have to fight their way in. Xu sighed. He was never a good leader. It would better to leave these things to the senior members of the group.

Adela bit her lip. She was worried about their survival rates. Neither option was good. "Between the two choices, I say we go." She was worried that Schraeder wasn't in the best of shape to go on. "Who knows when Johann will reach them, and the longer we wait out here, the likelier we'll get hit."
She felt the shivering coming from Schraeder and frowned slightly. "Xu, I think we're going to need you to provide us some cover. If you can be our shield, I can certainly be the fighter." She didn't want Schraeder to fight or teleport unless absolutely necessary.

Schraeder put a hand against Adela to stop her. "No. I have...an idea. I'll...blink in there...and open the doors. Then I'll...go to the van and...stay out of the fight. I promise."
He looked up at her, the light shining in his eyes.
