Maya returned to the fire side quietly, unable to look at Shisei without feeling terrible. She was in charge, and look at what happened to Shisei. She had wanted to keep the group and to help them train, because she knew the power that a group could have if they only worked together. They were three, after all, and she and Baki were only two and they kicked some pretty hard a**. Maya sat with her knees drawn to her chest, her head resting on her forearms as she listened to the sound of the Karite and Orika being punished and not really taught anything. They were doing good, that was true, but still, it was useless to train them to be strong when they couldn't be strong together. Right? Maya didn't know, and she didn't have the energy to really care. She closed her eyes and let herself drift off, her thoughts fluctuating between the wild, power-hungry woman she had dreamed of before and the soft golden color of Baki's eyes. Two opposite sides of the spectrum, and she, caught in the middle.

Her arms were shaking so badly she couldn't even raise herself half the normal height. Orika collapse and rubbed her sore muscles. What did someone do to alleviate the aches? Oh, an ice pack! Orika grinned and took off her jacket, then touched her biceps to the snow. Cold, cold, cold! But after she pulled her arms under her shirt and rubbed them against her bare skin, they stopped hurting so badly. Amazing! She'd have to ask Tenko after she was done how that worked, but then the nurse would probably launch into a lecture on muscles and uh, the other little things inside a person's body. Ready to try more push ups, Orika eagerly raised herself into position and lowered her body. 9... Up. Here goes nothing. She slowly, painfully pushed up from the fur mat, trying to control her breathing the whole way. Her arms were shaking so badly she was in serious danger of falling over. Orika tried to stabilize herself, but to no avail. All that was left was to finish the push up! Yeah! She closed her eyes and pushed with all her might until her elbows nearly locked into place, then lowered herself quickly before her arms gave out. Gah, it hurt so much, but she liked the burn. It made her feel really good, like after every exercise. Orika's legs were working fine... well, kind of, so she saw no reason to delay the next training. She got up using her crutches and limped over to Maya, standing at a safe metre away. "I'm finished, Maya. What are we going to do next? Are we done for the day? Do you need any wood chopped? Ooh, can I go hunting? Or maybe you could show me some taijutsu moves!" She was so pumped up with adrenaline and eager to get going!

Maya couldn't look at Orika, and simply gave a small shrug. "Can't leave the grounds until Shisei can. And Shisei can't leave til Tenko says so." Her voice was soft, careful, and...cold. Flat and even, and devoid of any of the rage it had been filled with earlier. Maya's eyes were closed, and she simply sat next to the fire. Soon she would be able to finish the hides she was working on. What could the brats do to keep themselves busy? They ought to help Tenko, is what they ought to have done...but Tenko might need the fire to keep stoked. It was dying a little already, and Maya usually didn't care if it went out or not - but Shisei would need it tonight. So she pointed to a stack of wood that she had cut in the summer and motioned towards the fire. "Keep the fire stoked. Bring more wood over, Tenko will need Shisei to stay warm." Unlike earlier, Orika would be able to tell that she had a choice in the matter. She could help, or she could sit and sulk.

There was darkness. Only darkness. Not even the amber suns in Shisei’s skull could illuminate the pure obsidian world he now roamed. His legs moved boldly into this realm of mystery. With each step he could feel his legs stepping into puddles of liquid. With each step the liquid grew more and more in height. Soon it was up to his ankles. Gold eyes still could not see anything so the serpent youth did his best to retrace his steps from which he returned. Still nothing his body only fell deeper into the unknown pool till it was up to his thighs. If only there was only something to illuminate the area and cast away the blackness. None came and Shisei was not one to wait. After all if he waited he’d still be in the same position and nothing would change. For hours more the snake head persisted in his travel, each step leading him deeper into the lake until the frame was neck deep into the mysterious world. Waves crashed against his face lightly and boy had to spit out the liquid before digesting it. What was this iron taste? While pondering this a crimson light is unveiled, shattering the darkness and enveloping the entire sky in scarlet. A sky of scarlet, clouds of carmine, the ruby star with the scarlet. Shisei stared around in bitter shock. Everything in a monochrome of red! His violet dreads now with a red hew. The once white skin as pure as milk now toned like strawberry milk. Even the gold suns in his eyes seemed like cardinal supernovas right before they explode. He could see this in the liquid he had been walking in. It was blood. A sea of sangria. The serpent bawled at the sight of him in the ocean falling back into the sea and trying his best to stay floating. Flailing to not drown the child looked around hoping to find something to stay afloat. There were three shadows that circles around him, but shadows were no help. He needed form. The red orange eyes glanced up in the sky to see that figure. The only thing not in monochrome red. In that uniform, Shisei still recognized, but most of his features still unknown. The snake youth could make out that the frame was parallel to the ocean of blood and hovering just above the sea, out of his reach. Still it was that man. “One year ago…. six months ago…. be jealous. Just like the ouroboros. Living by destroying your being. Continue to burn away your life till not even ashes remain. So…. unlike….” the man said this ramble of words that made no sense to Shisei. It didn’t matter. The important thing was to stay afloat and reach this person. Both clawed hands reached out trying to grasp this figure that said no more. The serpent youth was close almost there. Only inches away. He may have grasped the figure if it wasn’t for the ferocious seizure of his throat. The cold fingers that wrapped around his throat with the toothy grin and those disgusting eyes belonged only to one person. “Bakemono-suke!” the form slithered out from their lips, stopping Shisei from closing in on his target. Tanu was not the only one though. Below the ruby ocean his pupils can catch a glimpse of the forms of Serena and Shikai holding his legs. Above the surface Karite and Orika had each taken an arm with a little feline, biting into his neck. There were others. All weights which began to make him sink into the sangria sea. Drowning in red till darkness encompassed him again….
Gold eyes opened slightly to seeing the top of a tent. What had happened? There was no memory of anything before that dream. The chess like mind began to retrace its steps at to what happened. There was a log that he released. The lion reaper had tried to attack him and failed. Then the broken girl took advantage while his sight was adverted. He had gotten hit in the chest and solar plexus area. He did not remember it hurting yet then his skeleton walked into the night and then a sea of blood. There was that figure and now the maverick was on his back with a pain in his chest similar to if an elephant stepped on him. His skeleton was feeling the effects of winter to a higher intensity than before. Was it that person? No. Impossible. That was a year ago. Karite had missed. The amazon lion handler had gone away. That only left one person…. “What a wretched life… first that… lime haired urchin… and now some dull, broken cur…” the boy heaved out to himself. This was just shameful. How could someone like him lose to people like them? And if so, then what about that other…. The amber pupils re closed, making his sockets appear to be two dark holes. He could deduce that Maya probably interrupted before things got to bad and the nurse hovering over him was called in by the feral teen. He may have to show his gratitude at a later time, although the snake child began to wonder if death would have been easier than to live with the fact of Tanu and Orika having a victory over him. Both ending with him in the care of a nurse. A pitiful performance. For now his mind would meditate on other things, while his amber suns hid from the world.

Maya perked up slightly, standing and peering into her tent, apparent relief on her face as she realized Shisei was awake. She entered, closing the tent flaps after her for privacy, and sat neatly next to him - a complete opposite to what it seemed like she should sit like, but in any case... "Gonna teach you how to dodge and counter, kid," she said softly, a smile on her face. It seemed she was taunting him, but really, she was overjoyed that he was awake. Tenko worked miracles, and Maya wondered how she ended up working side by side with the crazy nutjob Kumiko. In any case, she bowed her head, thanking the nurse profusely. "I'm sorry I mistook the injury, but thanks so much for coming to help. I will repay your kindness," Maya promised, and bowed her head again. Carefully, much gentler than it seemed possible for someone with Maya's training, the girl smoothed Shisei's hair and gave a small smile. "You might wanna learn jutsu...but you're gonna have to learn some other things til you build up your chakra enough to learn those jutsu. It'll be hell to keep getting picked on and bullied, especially by the Kun'Kumo....er...by Orika..." Maya flushed slightly, again letting her own memories filter into what she was saying. Damn, Kana wasn't even on the island, and he was in her head. She flushed and checked on Kore and Ruha, satisfied that they were still ok. She rubbed between Kore's ears gently - did the cub, too, have an unneeded grudge against Shisei? She picked him up carefully, cradling him and making sure both Kore and Shisei could see each other. She could handle the cub, and Shisei was just waking, so there wasn't really anything bad that could happen...at least, not anything she couldn't handle.

Tenko tucked the blanket around Shisei in a motherly manner and smiled sweetly at the injured boy. Thank Kami he was going to be alright. When the boy started murmuring, Tenko leaned in closer to catch the sparse words, but just as soon reeled her head back. Who taught this kid such foul words? But it wasn't her place to deal with his behavior. That was Maya's job and if she thought it was alright for a boy his age to be speaking like a demon, then Tenko wouldn't argue. Instead, she turned to Maya and laughed softly, "Oh, you really don't need to. I was just doing my job. What you can do for me is to keep him warm and away from any more fights or strenuous exercise at least for a few hours. These kids are your responsibility now, Maya." Tenko bowed slightly at Maya and got up to traverse the harsh snowy land back to the clinic.
Orika remained still, moving less than the petrified hare just before it bolted away from the danger. But there was no chance of her running away, not by a long shot. If she was ever going to get on Maya's good side, she had to behave, pretend to be an obedient little girl until her guardian allowed them to roam free. Orika was disturbed to hear the absolute lack of emotion in Maya's voice. It was too low, a dangerous tone that sent shivers up Orika's fragile spine. What could she do to earn back Maya's favor? Orika looked solemnly at Maya's back, feeling like she were an insect watching a rhinoceros walking away. A rhino that could kill it with one measly stomp. Wordless, Orika got to work, limping over to the pile of firewood and selecting a particularly large one. When her sore arms refused to budge, she selected gradually smaller and smaller pieces of wood until she was finally able to lift one. The only problem was that it was the size of a handful of pebble. Orika flung the piece into the crackling fire with only a fraction of her heart behind the throw. Shisei would be waking up anytime soon and she'd have to deal with him. She looked at the leftover pieces of dirt on her hand and picked up a chunk of snow to wipe it off with, but the snowball crumbled into fragments upon her touch, leaving a rock underneath. Orika numbly picked up that rock and tossed it in her hand. She glanced at tent flap, back at the rock, at the tent. Rock, tent, rock, tent, rock?? The girl squeezed the rock in her hand, but it being a brittle rock, cracked into pieces as well. All that was left behind was a crisscross of tiny scarlet lines.

Karite was doing pretty good with his push-ups. Remembering how long it took him to do five on the beach his first day here made him realize how much stronger he really was getting. He was almost down and with his injures it was a good thing. Beginning to go down again Karite's leather gloves slipped on the surface of the snow and caused him to hit the ground on his right side. This did not help his wounds. The young Reaper looked up from his position with his dead eyes wide to the world and his mouth wide painted red with his own blood. Something in his body felt the shock from the ground and gave way. Getting to his knees one arm around his ribs the other supporting his upper body he spat the bitter taste of blood from his mouth and grinded his teeth to avoid signaling anyone of his pain. Looking around through the current of green hair he made sure no one was coming to his aid and got back into position. Good thing his clothes were dark and hid the color of blood well.

The snake youth kept his eyes closed trying to keep his mind off of the burning crater in his chest. It would not make much of a difference if his eyes were open because his vision was still blurred. Those around him were nothing more than a mixture of colors, like a painting of different dyes, but no actual definition of figures. His ears heard a voice, but was not able to comprehend it. To the serpent child, the voice sounded like someone trying to talk to him under water. Everything was slightly garbled, but Shisei would still try to figure out the words of this person. He could discern the voice or what the person was asking him. Something about reach? Reaching what? The hurt serpent was not sure of what this person was saying.

Maya nodded her head and continued to hold Kore quietly, feeling no reaction from the cub just yet. She murmured quietly, no real words since it seemed Shisei couldn't understand her anyway...at least not yet. However, she stayed her position, sitting next to the boy and wondering what she had been thinking when she had decided to take on the three brats...Kore was another issue altogether, because now Maya wasn't sure he was the right partner for someone as ... serious, she supposed, as Karite. Even Baki was somewhat opposite her, not particularly caring about the next big fight, even if he was protective of her. Maya was always looking for trouble, and was a brute. Baki was smarter than she was, which was saying something since Baki was an animal...though Maya didn't know how to read as well as some of the academy students, so maybe that wasn't a good measure...Maya hummed softly, closing her eyes and trying to remember anything at all from her days before being on Shimagakure...all she remembered, though, was the horrid dream and the hands without faces that had spoken to her.

Kore felt his body shift, groggily opening his eyes like that of a drunk seamen waking up on deck. He saw Maya holding him close, and the filthy stench of alcohol and blood. Looking there she was the source of the smell and the person who stuck him with that vile elixir of toxin. Growling at Tenko he jarred his lips so the small tips of his teeth showed, but sensed no anger and Maya and calmed himself. Taking his rough tongue across the girls arm. Sensing the mood in the tent the young lion calmed down rather quickly. Kore seemed to have more control then his partner and the two demons he ran with. While of course only following his instinct he was much tamer for a wild beast then three humans.

Ivory ears could feel the vibrations of voices entering through and to the brain, but they still sounded as if submerged. The snake child was in too weak of a state in body and mind to care much. Normally this would prove as an annoyance to him. Not being able to comprehend the lips of others as if they were speaking a different language. The snake child just kept his eyes closed. He could still feel the slight haze around his brain and knew that his sight would not be much better. His motivation to decipher the gargled words was to remain polite and at least have an idea what was going on. For all the serpent youth knew they could be planning to boil him in soup. “Concentrate a little…” the youth began to think. First think back at how the sentence sounded. Then try to formulate what words it could be. This time the youth was sure that the rough yet at the same time soft, and perhaps even caring tone was of Maya. The new caretaker had stated about teaching him to dodge and counter. Also building up chakra. While the hurt snake felt a tinge hit to his pride for the woman to take his evasion as inefficient his frame was in no shape to prove her wrong.
“Yes… teach… me everything… that you…. know… I…” the Orochi child had stopped his sentence there. More so because he lost track of what his lips was planning to spurt next. Well sooner or later he would remember. For now the child remained still, his eyes closed and body making a quick spasm.

She gritted her teeth at the stinging sensation and quickly thrust her palm down into the snow to number her hand. Orika removed her tattered glove before doing so, looking with guilt at her mum's ripped creation. Another reason for Mai to kill her! In fact, another reason for anyone bigger than she to kill her. Was there not one adult on this island she could trust? There was Hammah-san, but would he still take her to be his apprentice after what she did to Karite and Kore? Orika's eyes downcasted towards the ground as she stumbled back through the snow to the pile of firewood that needed to be moved. She felt like an automaton without any freedom in Maya's work camp. She looked disdainfully at the pieces of wood, wondering which one she's actually be able to lift. Probably better to start on the way up this time, taking bigger and bigger pieces until she felt her arms strain. Oh, how lucky! This time Orika was able to lift one the width of her forearm as long as she awkwardly used both arms to support it. It was a little hard to walk, but when she tottered back as a penguin, the farm girl could manage. She dumped the wood onto the fire, stepping back as it crackled and crisped. Orika glanced at the tent, stamping her good leg impatiently. "They're taking an awfully long time in there, don't you think?" the girl said, out of the blue.

There was no reply. Shisei was not sure if the woman had replied or not to his answer. His mouth gulped in a quart of air that made his chest rise, but it quickly declined again. His body shook slightly, but the child remained unmoving. The boy’s mind began to wonder what other happenings were occurring around him. He was trying to remember who was there. The wild woman was nearby and he thought he heard the nurse. Little snake could not distinguish which nurse it was though. She had said something before, but the tone came out muddled. The analytical mind rewound the sound in his head trying to remember which of them would have that vocal sound. His head pivoted slightly to where the voice was heard last, but the child kept his eyes clothes. The brain was still contemplating different things. One of the thoughts was wondering what he should do to his peers that had put him in this position. For now he just let air slowly move between his nostrils.

Orika resisted the urge to peek into the tent flap, at least until her work was done. She hobbled back to the pile and lookd disdainfully at the thick pieces of wood she'd have to move. The last run had taken her way too long; The girl thought she even saw the sun move! Orika tossed her crutches to the side and sat down by the fire when she finally arrived at the supply location. Maybe she could create an assembly line, ask Karite for help? No, he was busy with his push ups, slow little thing. "Come on, Karite, hurry up! You're taking sooo long!" Orika whined, so eager to start the next training. She was so cold too and couldn't even run around to warm up. By the looks of it, she'd be done tending the fire before he finished another push ups! Geez! Orika took her eyes off the lad and tried to find the smallest piece of firewood she could, but even that was as big as two fists and would take time to ferry back. Well, at least on foot! She took aim at the fire and shotputted the wood towards the fire. It would be dangerous to hit the fire directly for fear that it would die, but if she got it close enough, then it would be much easier. Orika took all the pieces of wood she could carry with one hand and one by one, threw them all by the fire.

The two could wait for later. They would unfortunately be close by for a while. Probably a long while depending on the will of Ero-sensei. For now the serpent maverick needed to concentrate on recuperation and rejuvenation. This restriction to bed was a hindrance in learning jutsu. His senses needed to return quicker so his health could restore faster. The snake child had already identified Maya to his side. The nurse was at the other, but which one was it. His face cringed slightly trying to imagine the two divas and what they would sound like. It was a quiet and somewhat comforting voice. It had a gentle tone to it holding Maya responsible for the well being of the trio. It had to be the nurse with the soft brown eyes, Tenko. This is the second nurse that has attended to Shisei. The first was Ms. Yuki. By the way things were going Kumiko would not be that far behind to attending to his wounds. The injured serpent was considering learning a medical jutsu in these circumstances. Having someone tending to him was becoming a pain, a hassle as well as humiliating.
