Stepping forward, she put her hands gently on her friend's shoulders. Poor thing. Something big had happened. "Tell me."

Tell her.... Tell her what? What did Emerwyn feel prepared to tell Greer? As far as she knew, the only ones who knew of her plight were the ones involved. Ian, and Julian.

She looked into Greer's honest eyes hidden in her changing face, and felt that, yes, she could tell her.

 But how to start?

"I told you, long ago, that there was someone I left behind. Jerrick.
Still the thoughts that I could not save him haunt me... but, something happened to me that I neither expected nor intended."

Greer led Emer gently to the bed and sat down, hoping the other woman would join her. This seemed like something that might take a little while.
 "Go on."

She walked over behind Greer, slowly bringing herself to sit.
"... then, I... met someone else.
And, though I do not know why, or how I could feel the way I did, I fell in love with him.
At the time when Jerrick needed me the most, though I know I cannot be with him, I-I... betrayed him.

 And, all the same,

I can not help loving Ian."

Greer took one of her hands and squeezed it. She didn't know what that was like, being that she wasn't even sure if she'd been in love with another person once, let alone fallen for a second. People were so complicated.
 "Do you still love Jerrick?"

This question was harder to answer than Emerwyn had expected. At first, she almost objected at what a rediculous question it was. Then... she simply paused.
A look of a slowly dawning epiphany appeared on Emerwyn's face.
"...Yes. I do. And, I always will. But, I know. Now, I know...
 ...He would want this."

Her face turned in to meet Greer's. It spoke of a melancholy joy.

"If you still love him, you haven't betrayed him. And if he loves you enough to want you happy even if it isn't with him, then..."
She pulled Emer into a hug, rather needing one herself. "Then you should be happy and not torture yourself over this. He wouldn't want you to."

Emerwyn closed her eyes in the feathery embrace. "Thank you," she practically mouthed.

Emerwyn's mind told her to cast her thoughts of Julian aside for now. She had already said so much. What would Greer think if she heard about this?

Something at the back of her mind said that that wasn't everything that was bothering her companion, but Greer knew better than to push it. Emer would tell her in her own time, if at all.
"We have to find as much happiness as we can here, or else what's the point of living?" You had to enjoy the company of those that were here to distract you from those that were not.

"And not that I know Ian particularly well, but he seems like a nice guy. Besides," she said leaning back and tweak one of Emer's ears. "You two match."

Emerwyn satisfied herself with believing that Greer failed to see the other sadness lurking in her eyes.
 A 'nice guy.' Emerwyn smiled.
And she laughed, a soft, crystal clear laugh when Greer tweaked her ear.
That was right. She had never really thought about it, but... they were becoming the same animal!

 "I guess you're right.
Greer, I am such a sorry fool," she said, still smiling. "I shall never learn how any of you have the patience to deal with me."

Ah, a laugh! It was good to hear some cheer in this place. "We put up with you because you put up with us, my dear."
Standing, she offered Emer a hand. "I pine for tea. Care to join me in the cafeteria for some? I don't think I can really drink it anymore, but the smell makes me feel better."

Emerwyn Emerwyn began to feel restless sitting in the cafeteria for so long. It was wonderful to speak with Greer again. It was wonderful to have someone to listen to her, and to listen to. And, it was so good to see Ambrose and to find that miracles can happen on even so dreadful a place as this. But, she needed to move. Something wasn't right with her still, for all she had been able to get out. She still didn't feel all herself -there - while she spoke, or drank her tea. So, she sbruptly said, "Greer, I need to get out of here." And, without hardly waiting for Greer to respond, she stood, and began to walk swiftly towards the cafeteria doors. Greer Cassenwari Greer blinked and cocked her head, things changing too quickly for her to follow while lost in her own thoughts. A moment later her brain clicked into gear, she put down her cup, bussed her tray, and sped after Emerwyn's retreating back. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked as she caught up to the other woman outside. Emerwyn "I need to go..." Emerwyn panted as she sped, though she slowed a bit for Greer to catch up. "Something's not right..." her voice grew a little panicked as she went, and she even looked about herself nervously, as though observed by some unseen being. "Come with me... We need to go. And, please, please, don't ask me why... I just... can't be alone for this." Whatever it was that was bothering Emerwyn, it was not going to leave, and her voice was pleading with Greer, though her eyes never turned to meet hers. She continued to move quickly out of the village.Greer Cassenwari Greer did her best to keep pace, but hawks were not known for their running abilities. "As long as you don't get too far ahead, I'll be here." She'd been a jogger and a fencer once, damn it, but the halfwings were slowing her down and her legs weren't set up to run as well anymore. She better get some flying out of this or the doctor and she were going to have wordsEmerwyn Emerwyn slowed her pace, but slow for her legs was probably a little different than Greer's definition. Emerwyn had never been an athlete; she hardly left the house as a youth, and found herself shut up in a bookshop for the rest of her life on the mainland. But now, she found her strength and stamina increasing rapidly. Periodically, she'd slow herself down for Greer to catch up again, but then, ahead she'd dart once more, toward some unknown location. The cliffs loomed in the distance.Greer Cassenwari Her body knew what she wanted from it, but try as it might it couldn't give it. There were going to be painful, crabby muscles for her tomorrow.Emelyn Emelyn reveled in the strange mix of sensations that were afforded to her in her position. She had splayed out on the rock face, her spiney back to the sun while her downy stomach practically shivered in sheer delight with the sweet deliciousness of the cold that the rock still harbored. She had been writing for hours, sitting up on the cliffside, musing over everything that had happened to her over the past few weeks, and had only recently put aside her journal for a moment's respite from thinking. She allowed herself only to feel, and to soak in the day with an abandon totally unknown to someone who was confined to a life of sheer humanity... and nothing else. Emerwyn Emerwyn continued this odd pattern of running until she found herself at the top of the cliffs. Her chest rose and fall at a pace that reached a gradual decrescendo as she slowed to a halt. The world was so clear up here, and the sky so perfectly visible, seeming only now as unfathomably wide as it was. After she had taken all of this in, her eyes roamed until they fell upon a creature bathing in the sun on a rock. This was what she was looking for! Of course! But why? She didn't know yet, but emotion completely overwhelmed her. She turned to Greer quickly. "Greer! This is it! ... Thank you for helping me." What Greer had actually done remained to be seen, but without another word, Emerwyn ran to Emelyn.Greer Cassenwari She wasn't exactly winded, per se... I mean, her lungs were fine it was just her legs that wanted to kill her. A little exasperated with her dysfunctional anatomy, she continued doggedly behind Emerwyn until they came to hedgehog and the cliff. Then she sat down. "Em is it? Why?" Not that she minded, of course, being rather partial to the writer herself she just didn't understand. Emelyn Emelyn heard the commotion long before the two caught up with her, and she rolled over to her side to look at their heads poke up over the rock as they finished their ascent. "Hey..." she said, her voice filled with suprirse. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" Regardless of her surprise, she was happy to see them, and joy tugged the corners of her mouth up towards her eyes in a crinkling smile.Emerwyn Emerwyn crouched down on her legs in a quick, bouncy, and very chldlike manner before Emelyn. "Emelyn, I've been a great fool. And, why hadn't I seen it before? ... but, as someone once told me we are all fools, after all. Please forgive me; I ... I was not who I am."Greer Cassenwari Greer sat and preened her wind-whipped feathers, much more comfortable once they were settled. What the hell had happened between these two while she'd be off breaking rabbits?Emelyn I am not who I am... the words drifted slowly into Emelyn's realization. The letter. It was Emerwyn who had left it, she who was apologizing... who was afraid she was losing her mind. What little of it made sense came together for Emelyn in that moment, and she flattened her palms against the rock, pushing herself into a sitting position, wrapping her arms gently around the woman when she was nearer to her. "It's all in the past, sweetie. I just hope you're better." She shot a look over the deer-woman's shoulder, giving a small and happy smile to Greer, with a look that seemed to say "I will explain this later".Emerwyn Emerwyn cried. There, in the prickle-haired arms of this woman, she shed tears. They were so cleansing. They freed her from whatever self-imposed torment she had been going through. "Greer... Emelyn. I don't even know myself anymore." She laughed softly. "But, of course, I suppose it's to be expected. But, what I have been able to save... what's left of me... the old me... I'm just grateful to you both." It was true, these two woman had born much of Emerwyn's frustrations and had been there to hear her greatest sorrows. And had supported her though she had acted such a fool.Greer Cassenwari She may not have known why exactly her friend needed comfort, but that didn't mean she couldn't give it. Pushing herself forward, she joined the hug. "We'll always be here."Emelyn The 'group hug' flooded more delicious warmth through Emelyn's system than basking in the sun ever could, and she echoed Greer's sentiment with a heartfelt "You said it, sister." Having those words come out of her mouth made her laugh, but it struck her as truth in that moment. ...She had lost her sister, and would never again regain that special bond that she and Mizzie had shared. But perhaps, in some way... she had sisters in these women- who, despite all that had happened to them, she loved them dearly.Emerwyn Emerwyn laughed lightly again. "What an odd place we have all found ourselves in. What an unwordly, completely unbelievable situation. For all I have read, I could never in all my dreams imagine something like this ever to happen - least of all to me. We are truly a marvel. We physically stand against humankind - we look blasphemy to their unseeing eyes. And yet, thrown into this as we are, we have become all the more human for it. I shall ensure that I never forget it."Greer Cassenwari Greer chuckled. She was a scientist surrounded by poets. "For what it's worth, my life with feathers has been far better than the preceding years without."Emelyn Emelyn brushed a bit of hair out of Emerwyn's eyes, tucking it behind her ear in a tender, soft gesture that left her hand near Emer's cheek, and she cupped it with a slightly curved palm. "I'm just glad you're... better," Emelyn said, her emotions unwilling to delve into the subject of their humanity. "I've been worried about you."Emerwyn Emerwyn smiled. Though, it held a melancholy air. "Yes, for now."Emerwyn A cozy room. A fire crackling, spreading warmth where there was none. Snow fell gently on the windows of the New York City book shoppe. A group of six friends crowded around the blaze. Books lay sprawled about, and soft laughter filled the walls. This was home. These were friends. Emerwyn hadn't felt this way in a long time. She held Greer and Emelyn's words in her heart, and she cherished them.

Having pounced on some food on her way home from cliffside girl time, Greer munched on raw bunny without even thinking about it. The Hawk was ecstatic - its human had finally learned how to cook! She ignored the reality of her meal mainly because carnivoric eating habits were the least of her worries. For all her giving comfort and swearing to be there for her friends, she didn't really feel it. Instead of actual emotions there were the reactions she knew she was supposed to give. It's how she'd survived her father's funeral once upon a time, and most of her life afterwards. She was going numb again. It was probably because of Sean's disappearance, but if pressed she never would have admitted it. She liked honesty, but she'd also been raised to believe that mooning over a guy was something strong women did not do. She knew she was really all that strong, having hid among her bugs fro safety for most of her adult life, but she wasn't a housewife so she was supposed to be at least a little resilient. She just wished she knew what had happened to him. No. She really didn't. The Hawk huffed and pointed out that there were plenty more males about to make a harem. Greer conceeded this point, but it was as much comfort as her feathered side thought it should be. It wasn't a harem she was concerned about, after all. It was her friend. She was pretty sure she wasn't in love with him, but... damn it, she cared! She wanted him to be okay. She wanted him to be here. She didn't like losing people, and had a history of reacting badly to it. She didn't want to go numb and friendless again, and with any luck the Hawk wouldn't let her. She should talk to people, mention this, but she didn't want to be a burden. Greer was the adoptive sister and mother, the strong shoulder other people cried on. She wasn't entirely sure how she'd earned this new persona, but now that she had it was reluctant to give it up. Only the strong survive, the Hawk reminded her. Thanks. That was a big help. Returning home to her duplex she finished her meal and tossed the empty carcasses on to the balcony railing to sundry or be claimed by another predator. Maybe the Captain was hungry. She should set out meals for him again. It wouldn't do to let the poor beastie starve just because his keeper had gone AWOL. After seeing to the needs of her pets, Greer left her room again to pick up food for the cat at the cafeteria. She hummed to herself, putting on a show of good spirits in case she bumped into anyone. She'd mourned for too long before. No one was going to see her do it again.

Colche After Aubrey had gone back to the labs (she had to work after all, Colche knew that though found it sad that she had to go) Colche had sat around for a while. Her bruises weren't nearlly as achey as they had been so she had made good timeing to the Cafeteria. Stopping pretty sparodically though to look around, check noone was there then continue.
Once she passed through the door though, making sure that Billy wasnt in there, though his scent lingered some what in the place. He had definately been there recently, she made ehr way to the counter and received a big english breakfast and a knife and fork. She was determined to work the knife and fork properly. She wanted desperately to be like everyone else.

With a gentle sigh she padded, still a little painfully, to a chair and sat slowly, taking her knife and fork to her meal. he paused regularily to double check noone was coming in and if they were, it was somone she knew and could trust. She was still feeling a bit shaken despite her talk with Aubrey.
Greer Cassenwari Greer trotted into the cafeteria in search of food to leave out for Captain Morgan, now that she'd thought of him again, and perhaps some tea to pretend to drink. Her old black indian brand didn't sit right in her stomach anymore, but she still loved the smell. She supposed she could concede defeat and try a lighter tea, maybe a green or a red, but that would be giving in. She was rarely stubborn, but she deserved at least a small moment of it.
Looking around as she always did in case someone was there, she noted a large cheetah eating breakfast. Wait...

 "Colche?"
Colche Colche's furry round ears percked the second Greer entered the cafeteria, she looked a little frightened but her nose wrinkled. The scent was, a touch familiar to her. At her name she recognised the voice and gave a little puurr "greer" she stated, smiling genuenly to the first person beside Aubrey since the Billy incident. Greer was somone she knew and really liked, the woman had been really nice to her.
Her long tail twitched and she stood up padding out from behind the table. Colche couldn't remember greer having a beack, it had been a long time, they had both changed, he was certainly more cheetah now than human. She stood still wondering if she could pounce the woman, contemplating if it would be practical really, she was still sore, the bruises obvious on her abdomen and chest, she still hadn't quite gotten the idea that clothes were supposed to be mandatory not optional. Instead, she did the next best thing and held ehr furry fingers out. "not see forever" her vocabilary had much improoved since she had last seen greer and though she still had a very redementry style of speaking she had a whole gaggle of words she could peice together to make her sentences quite frankly make more sence.
Greer Cassenwari The entomoligist smiled, taking the girl's, uh, paws, and pulling her into a hug.
"My, you've changed little one. How have you been? Do you still like my butterflies?"

You'd think after all this time she'd be used to the further animalizing of her friends, but it was always a bit of a shock when she saw another one further along in the process. A reminder of the good doctor lurking over the island.
Colche Colche smiled, puuring happily as she snuggled greer, she was a very big kitten indeed. "buterflies purty greer" she stated "me okay" she smiled a little weakly. "bad men on island tho greer" she pouted at this, befopre loking over Greers shoulder just to double check Billy wasn't coming through the door. For now, he was somehting to be fruightened of even if Aubrey had told her she could claw and bite him. she was still feeling decidely nervy about the big scary man.Greer Cassenwari Greer cocked her head, not liking the sound of the girl's last statement. "Bad men? What do you mean?"Colche Colches ears flattened tightly against her head and her usually cherful expression creased in a frown "Billy, hurted me." she stated, her tail twitching nervously for a moment as she once again looked around to double check for the lack of Billy "tried..but aubrey said never not again..Aubrey make bad man stop" The fur on her shoulders was looking decidedly ruffled as she tried to explain her feelings behind the attack though the bruises were pretty obvious on what skin she had left on her front, her chest and abdomen not so much swollen but definately a purple blush colour where she had been mauled about.Greer Cassenwari Greer's eyes widened as she realized what the little one was talking about. Not ever again? She'd never heard the full story of Colche's past, and now didn't particularly want to. Good for Aubrey, though. She may not have liked the second in command of the lab's taste in men, but she was still a good person in Greer's book.
"Good, Aubrey will protect you. And I'll protect you. And Colche the cheetah," she said, holding up one of the girl's hands to indicate the claws now anchored there, "will protect herself. You're a big, strong cat now."
Colche Colche puurred and smiled in a catty manner. Though she hadn'ty been able to protect herself against Billy, she knew there were others around to help her. Colche smiled in an innocent way, Greer knew she was a Cheetah, still it didn't stop her informing Greer of her 'proper title' "Colche princess cheetah" she stated, looking hppier than she had in two days, she loved telling people she was a princess cheetah. It sparked that little girls love for fairy tales.
"Aubrey says watching all time, Billy bad naughty man but no more drugs for heem" she didn't entirely understand the phrase ' no more drugs' or for that matter what exactly drugs were, she just knew they made people bad, Aubrey had said so.

She paused in thought then, hadshe ever asked Greer what she was turning in to? Tilting her head a little a curious look came to those big sweet blue eyes "greer birdy" she stated, though it was more of a question than an affirmative to herself.
Greer Cassenwari "Ah, a princess cheetah." The woman smiled, pulling back a little to give the girl a small bow. "Pray forgive me Your Highness, I did not know."
She didn't know precisely where there princess bit had come from, but she was sure she could find out if she did some reading up on big cats. Pity research was as fun as it used to be. And Colche really ought to be taught how to take care of herself at some point but... now was not the time, and the entomologist was no martial arts teacher. Hopefully Aubrey would think to see to that.

"Yes, Greer birdy. A hawk, actually. A Harris' Hawk, or a Bay-Winged Hawk if you want to be specific. Do you think I'll be able to fly someday?"
Colche Colche smiled and puurred "Harris..hawk" she nodded, though she looked very thoughtful "fly like birdys?" the thought was too delicious not to fantasise about. She could imagine flying, "be like aladdin" she grinned, she had been watching alot of DVD's of late.
Her attantion was taken to the door again for a moment, she just wanted to double check Billy wasn't coming, it was safe, Greer would protect her but the thought of Billy still scared her.

Her attention fell back on greer though "flying..look..fun" she smiled, her vocabulariy really had improoved alot since she last saw greer.
Greer Cassenwari "It does." she said, frowning and trying to figure out why Colche kept looking at the door. Worried about bad men? "I think I'll need more wings on my arms before I can do it, though."
She smiled at the girl, glad that she'd been doing okay beside some poor encounters and that others were looking out for her. "Would you like to help me take care of a small kitty, Princess?"
Colche "Kitty?" Colche tilted ehr head questioningly, was there somone else turning in to a kitty? Well she knew that Julian was a kitty, but she hadn't seen him for a very long time. She grinned and nodded. "Okay" she giggled and looked at Greer a bit shyly though, "still Colche Greer" she giggled happily, her sweet tinkly laughter echoeing through the cafeteria. She wondered wheer the kitty had come from, it didn't really matter though Greer wanted ehr help and she was happy to oblige.Greer Cassenwari "Good! I came here to get food for the kitty, and then I was going to put it out on my doorstep." She got some ham as she spoke, also fetching a knife and cubing it on a plate. "The cat's name is Captain Morgan, and he came to the island with Se- the Dude. Do you remember him?"
Hopefully this wasn't a futile exercise, but if any domesticated animal could survive by himself on this island, it was that huge marmelade tom.
Colche Colche looked thoughtful. She couldn't remember if she had met the dude, for such a small island there were lots of people she didn't know, still she gave a half hearted nod "Captain Morgan" she smiled watching Greer cut up the ham. She giggled though and padded over to the self service bar and came back with a peice of sushi which she popped next to the ham "kitty like fish" perhaps she had read this phrase in one of her books, but she knew kittys liked fish and that this 'sushi' stuff was fish so maybe the kitty would like it. Greer Cassenwari "Good idea Colche!" Greer nodded, glad to see the girl taking initiative, however small. She really had changed a lot since she'd last seen her.
"Now, let's take this to my house and see if the kitty will come and eat it. I don't think he'll come right away, but we can check the plate again tomorrow to see if it's empty." Of course, some other creature on the island could always come and consume the offering but... she prefered to think the cat was eating it if the food was gone.
Colche "Okay" Colche smiled again, glad she was helping. She hoped she would see the kitty though Greer said he might not come. She liked the idea of seeing a cat, of course she knew she wasn't your regular sort of kitty but in a way she was one. She had seen kittys in her stories and on the DVD's she watched, like the lionking that was full of kittys.
Padding off towards the cafeteria exit, she paused and wrinkled ehr nose, she had almost forgotten to check that Billy wasn't theer destracted by the fact that she was going to feed a kitty. The coast was clear though according to her nose and ears so she pushed the door open and waited for Greer. she really did hope the kitty would come.
Greer Cassenwari Carrying the plat laden with food, Greer followed the girl to the exit and then led the way to her duplex. Now that she'd remembered the captain she was feeling awfully guilty about not feeding him. She'd promised Sean she'd look after his pet, hadn't she? Poor cat, alone and starving on this godforsaken isle-
When they got to her front step, there was no cat in sight. Of course not. He would have figured out a while ago there wasn't food here anymore. Not noticing the large shadow watching them from her roof, Greer put down the plate of food by her door.

"I don't know if he'll come, Colche, but I hope he will. Thank you for helping me make the plate."
Colche Colche puurred and grinned "fishy for the kitty" she giggled a bit yawning and showing those long white fangs she had inhereted with her recent change.
Her fluffy ears twitched aq bit and she looked about in a partially nervous manner. She had heard something but there was no scent of Billy near by. She wanted to be calm really she did. She wanted to see the kitty and have a nice mid morning nap in peace. Noone was going to get her Aubrey had promised.
Greer Cassenwari The moment Greer's hand was off the plate Captain Morgan jumped down on top of it and began eating, making his usually growly purr as he ate so no one tried to take his food. Greer chuckled. And here she'd been worrying.
"Here's the kitty! He never passes up a free meal."

The large orange tabby ignored the 'kitty' comment, since he liked the bird lady and the food was good. Kitty. Really.
Colche Colche was quite surprised when the 'kitty' jumped off the roof "ohh!" she stated watching him eat, he was a hungry critter. She giggles, though it;s interrupted once again by a tawn "come back see kitty later greer" she says simply, saying one of her more, understandable if not entirely gramatical sentences. "Pritty Captain morgan" she grins and watches the Kitty eat. She wasn't entirely sure whether she should stroke him, he seemed entirely involved in what he was eating after all.
She paddedover to Greer and snuggled ehr birdy friend with a happy puurr "nap time" wrinkling her nose, she looked around one last time, before making a slow pad towards her Duplex. It wasn't too far away and she usually would have made the journey much faster but her mucles were still a little achey.

Glancing back one last time she waved to Greer from her Duplexses porch and vanished within. It was definately nap time.
Greer Cassenwari She returned the girl's hug and patted her head before she headed off to bed. "Sleep well Colche!" she called after her.
Her bipedal feline companion gone, Greer sat down next to the four legged one and looked out at the village beyond her door. She wondered idly if she even remembered which one was Sean's.

"I suppose it's down to you and me, huh Captain?" she asked, petting him when he bumped into her leg after finishing his meal. "But we'll take care of each other."

Of course he'd take care of her, the cat thought, enjoying the scritching behind his ears. She provided good meals, after all.
