Um.. I'm barely learning Viola, and it's really hard for me.. maybe I'm just not that musically inclined but still.. XD I'm normally a woodwind player [[Mainly Bass Clarinet if you want specifics]] but I've recently been learning viola, and I was wondering like.. are there any tricks to it? Pretty vague question, but anything would help.. It's pretty fun so far, but I don't know how to tune it all that good yet.. so after a few days it sounds utterly horrifying to myself. x3

everyone has trouble at first but it gets really easy after a little while depending on how decent your teacher is, i didn't have a really good teacher until high school so it took me a while

Renesmee,

I play violin, and have been playing for about three years. And because everyone in my orchestra has been playing for about the same amount of time, they don't sort chairs by how long you've been playing. They give annual playing exams to split you into groups. So, I'm one of the first chair violins.

I play the violin. I've been playing for 11 years. All throughout school I bounced back and forth between 1st and 2nd chair in a section of about 30. I played mostly 2nd violin music, but the 1st's always needed help so my teacher often had me play with them for particular songs. Right now I'm not a part of any orchestra. I just play when I feel like it. I've branched out in recent years and started playing other instruments. Mainly I just do a lot of singing right now.. But I will never lose my love for the violin. I often think, that if I never took up the violin, I would be playing the cello.. Cello music is so beautiful!!

Same here. I didn't really begin to understand half of what I now know until my junior year of high school! I didn't have any teachers that knew how to break it down for me. OH, I remember in 6th grade I was completely horrified at the thought of reading my music without writing in the notes! I thought I was going to die. But by the end of that year it was like second nature to read sheet music without the written letters.

As for the tuning, I don't know how often you need to tune a woodwind, but for string instruments you need to tune EVERY time you take it out of the case(weird things happen in there lol). When you play, keep your bow straight. Dont play at an angle. This is hard for me because for so many years I did it wrong! Use your entire bow. Make sure you keep a fair amount of rosin on it. Loosen your bow when you put it back in the case. It releases the tension and your bow is likely to last longer and you won't lose as many hairs. Violas read C clef, is that right? I have yet learned to read that cleff, so I don't really have any tips for that... One thing that was repeated by all of my teachers through the years to my viola friends was "c sharp on the G string"! lol. So remember that.
