Yeah it kind of sucks that most people are on a different time zone in here.
How are you this evening?

Kinda tired. So tired, it seems that I can't conjugate tonight. Oh boy.

Spent a good deal of time after class gabbing in a Tex-Mex restaurant about life, the universe and everything.

You?

Eh another rough night in a week full of rough nights, with no end in sight.
Have fun at dance class?

Why such a bad time?

Dance class is good for the workout, and there is a new student from Russia there, who is kinda cool. However, my instructor is "in lurv" and is also a tiny, old school, opinionated motorboat or a woman with an ego the size of Africa, so she's extremely chatty and fussbudgety and girly gooey all at the same time...and therefore it's a toss up as to whether or not she'll be nice or insufferable on any given night.

Eh complications in my social life. It's very tiring.
Learning anything fun?

Saying goodbye, or just relationship social goo?

Well, since we've got a new student, I watch my instructor teach her, and then either follow what they're doing or I'm doing full speed, or dancing as they go.

It's hard to do much else. However, snake arms kicked my a** tonight. Sure they look pretty but doing them for extended periods of time hurts.

Also reviewed the 850 million ways to shimmy. rofl

What's snake arms?

*hugs*

Snake arms is that slinky sort of arm gesture that bellydancers do. If you want to try it, imagine this:

Stand with your arms at your side, or sit.

Raise your right arm up, leading with the back of your upper arm, so it feels like you might be holding a beach ball under it. Don't do anything with your hand. When the back of your arm comes up level to the top of your shoulder, you ...release it, and let your elbow drop down smoothly. When you drop the elbow, you follow the same pattern on the left side...pulling your arm up slowly so that you create a ripple that appears to go from one arm to the next..

If you do this for about, oh...5 minutes...you usually feel something. Something like icy daggers of doom. wink

I dunno if that helps you visualize it. Mebbe I can take some sort of pics, or find one to post here. It's a common move, it just works the arms a great deal.

Ooh pics would be cool
How much of that would you normally do in one dance?

I found one, actually a guy doing it.

However it doesn't like being added in here as an URL.

Zorba

As to how much would be probably not too much...but it's important to practice. Also it depends on what type of move the music dictates to you. And if you're doing more American style dance versus Egyptian, Turkish or Lebanese...or whathaveyou.

I find it's more common in dance that doesn't keep the oriental column...so more American/American Tribal, really.

Wow. I didn't know there was so much variety to it.
That's pretty impressive.

There's quite a bit of variety to it...and some of it's not all that interesting to an American audience, as some of it is easily done in a very small space. The interesting thing is that the dance is being kept alive more by Germans, Russians, a good chunk of Latin American and Americans...but the Egyptians maintain that a good dancer is hard to come by from where we are simply because we aren't raised to understand the music. However, there's a ton of flow of idea and costume and custom going on in the dance so it's really a neat time to be a part of it.

I'm such a goober. But I do love to dance. heart 3nodding

I started in 1995, when I was a teaching assistant in college. My instructor used to be an Instructor at my school. I had a fidget which prompted her to ask me to come to class, because a modified version of it comprises a certain type of shimmy. I went, and the rest is ...boring a** history. wink

I stuck it out for 5 years, then quit for 4. So I've been back into the dance again for about a year or so again. Before I stopped, I used to dance occasionally at a local Greek restaurant with some of the other girls in my class. Great fun! I'm kinda hoping to dance in public again soon.
