I actually think it's harder than the original arcade shooters...

I prefer playing as Bass. Double jump and rapid fire instead of sliding and mega buster.

That's a great game, though one I never got around to beating. I blame the small screen size of the GBA American release. I'm sure the original Japanese SNES (or whatever system it was released for) release lets you see as much of the screen as Mega Man 8 did. They are, after all, using the same engine as far as I can tell.
If I ever find an original release ROM (legal since I do own the GBA cart, the only licensed American release), I'll be sure to play through it and try finding all the database discs. The art and information on those is so much fun!

I have ignored the disks . . . focusing on how the hell I am to reach and then beat the bosses. If anything, it's nice that Mega and Bass have to use slightly altered strategies for a few of them. Like the resurfacing of Tengu man. Bass can double jump and nail him in the air, but as Mega the easier tactic was to let him come to me.

I don't know what it is about that particular MM game, but I can't even beat 1 Robot Master, no matter which I try.
I agree, the different play styles they use is the most enjoyable aspect of that game. It reminds me of the MMX games that let you play as both X and Zero.
Then again, it could be similar to my experience with Mega Man Zero 2. I bought it, loving the original, but I couldn't even get past the intro level at the time. A while later I picked it up and zoomed through the whole thing. *considers picking up Mega Man & Bass again*

I'm more for the retro megaman. Megaman 2 for the NES. Loads of tricks and cheats were built into the game for funnsies.

I enjoy almost every Mega Man series (Star Force being the exception)! Mega Man 3 is my favorite Mega Man game. The Mega Man series is probably my favorite videogame franchise/IP.
Ranking them would be hard, but here goes: 1. Classic 2. Zero 3. Battle Network 4. X 5. ZX 6. Legends

In Mega/Bass, the bosses are as much about learning their patterns as luck. Took me forever to take out Cold Man as the first boss. After that Burner man is still insane despite having the weapon to hit him with. Why? Because you don't hit him with it. You have to wait for him to try a specific kind of attack, then shove him into spikes with the wall of ice- before he breaks it. Thus far, only one boss has a truly interesting animation to his weakness. Magic Man has the look of a deck of cards to him, and his weapon is a boomerang-action card. Hit him with a slashing attack (obtained from Tengu Man), and he splits in half vertically for a moment.
Very satisfying to make him do that. twisted

BIG fan of the Mega series. Megaman 2 was one of my first video games for the NES. Not sure about all the cheats/bugs you mention though . . .
I actually prefer the X series, though. The more adult theme, and overall gameplay is more my style. I loved the armor upgrades in the first couple games, but when they began to do several different armors, I lost interest in such. Still, I never got over how much I loved the "Armor Bomb" of X2. Take damage, and it charges a little. Fill it up, and nuke the screen!!! blaugh
I loathed Legends. If you had changed the name, nobody could tell it was a megaman game. Though adding him into the roster of the Marvel vs Capcom games was a nice touch. 3nodding
