Okay, I have two squads of Marines, a makeshift commander. What, besides for the new codex, do I need?

[Sanity_is_for_the_Weak] Okay, I have two squads of Marines, a makeshift commander. What, besides for the new codex, do I need? Havocs for all your anti-tank needs. That, or a Predator Annilator, or something similar. That's what I'd suggest, personally.

An army. Give us an idea of what youre going for here. Otherwise two troops, an HQ, the rule book, and the codex is about it.

Obliterators. Even without ballistic weapons anymore they still pack a mean punch.
Cult troops are awesome, but fill specific roles. Rubric Marines eat up other Tactical Marines, Bezerkers are dedicated CC, Plague Marines are tough, shooty troops, and Noise Marines have good(but expensive) Sonic weaponry that are like pseudo-flamers and what not.
I second the notion for a Predator also.

I want to focus on close combat attacks more than ranged weaponry. I appreciate Havocs, but I don't want to make a Tank commitment yet.

[Sanity_is_for_the_Weak] I want to focus on close combat attacks more than ranged weaponry. I appreciate Havocs, but I don't want to make a Tank commitment yet. Terminators and Bezerkers are great. If you're outfitting Terminators though, give them Heavy Flamers. The Reaper Autocannon lacks synergy with Chaos Termies, who are assault troops rather than shooty troops. Raptors are still good, especially now they can get Icons. Icon of Khorne with Raptors is a lot of RIP AND TEAR, albiet that is a very expensive unit. Bezerkers are also a lot of RIP AND TEAR, and I'd highly reccomend them if you're looking for a CC army. Don't go for Possessed or Chaos Spawn unless you **REALLY** like the models. They're much too random for my tastes. I'm wary of Chaos Dreads. They're just as likely to shoot up your guys or tear them to shreds as the enemy. I personally wouldn't risk a Dread.

If you got Lascannons or any dedicated anti-tank weaponry it shouldn't be too hard to pop a dread by shooting it. Most Dreads I've seen get shot to pieces if they aren't Drop Podded.
Which is why I don't use Dreads in my Chaos army. Unless Chaos gets Deathclaw transports that can deploy Dreads around, I wouldn't want to spend the points on a walking stubby box that's going to get shot to pieces just getting to the target, all the while spending half of it's time shooting at my own guys.
