Vajra B. Hairava Hawk_McKrakken German, too typical? At least most German learners' reasons for learning German aren't "I wanna be able to understand Japanese anime and manga!" like most learners of one language I know... Don't gimme that. I'm proud to say that I am one that studies Japanese, and does not watch anime or read manga. Don't judge me by the humongous masses of idiots who study the same language as me. The thing is, German just doesn't catch my interest as much. I'd be glad to learn it, but if I had the option, I'd rather learn something else. And I do have the option. German is one of the big high school language that hordes of unmotivated teenagers take. Icelandic is not. And besides, Icelandic is t3h pwnxorz. German also can pwn, but not as much in my opinion. No - you don't give me that. German isn't taught in many more than about two colleges total in the entire state of California, and I wouldn't hold that sort of discrimination to just this state - especially in a country that once outlawed the speaking of German in many areas. On an overall scale, German is one of the more useful languages to learn. Because Germany is one of the most industrial countries in the world - Iceland is not. Iceland is little more than a great place to take a vacation, seeing as how it was voted happiest country on Earth or something of the nature. Honestly, I don't know where you get your prejudices, because I've never heard of "hordes of unmotivated teenagers" taking German just because they have to - that's what French is for, in this area. And I definitely haven't seen as many French-learners learning it for that reason as I've seen these giddy little 12-year old Naruto and Pokemon fanatics who jump at the chance to learn the language of the country from whence those horrible animes come.

Vajra B. Hairava Hermonie Urameshi Kumiko-Misaki Hermonie Urameshi I always seem to be ignored... crying Ignored? Didn't think so...like Koko. said, you are active in almost every language guild. Seems like the chatterbox is turning into a debate thread... Sure I'm active, but that doesn't mean I'm not ignored. You're not ignored, you just are around all the time when nobody else really is. I don't think anybody in the guild is on as much as you. Even when people start logging on...

I have so many different threads that I am dedicated to, along with guilds. It's hard to be around 1 place for a long time.

And I definitely haven't seen as many French-learners learning it for that reason as I've seen these giddy little 12-year old Naruto and Pokemon fanatics who jump at the chance to learn the language of the country from whence those horrible animes come. Man, calm down. First of all, I suppose it depends on the area, because around where I live and have lived in the past, German is taught at every high school and college. So, I can't assume its everywhere, but from my experience, it is. I'm not familiar with the California area, so I wouldn't know. Now, who said I was prejudiced? Did I call everyone who speaks German some kind of nazi shitfaces who should go ******** themselves? No. I said that I would like to learn German, and that I really have no problem with it. I do have a problem with over serious people who like to come outta nowhere and be a little b***h for no good reason. I don't really care if its useful, or about the condition of the country where the language is spoken. My language learning choices are basically on impulse, and I just haven't really been drawn to German like I have to Japanese or Chinese or Hindi, ext... Also, I only have a limited amount of time and brain cells, and at this point, I'm not going to use those brain cells to learn German. Not to say that I never will, I don't know. Maybe I will. Language learning is all for fun for me, and I have no problem with German or any language. So, quit being a d**k, okay? So man, stop using your big serious words and calling me prejudiced and discriminating, because I'm not. You read waaaay to much into what I say and take it all as offense. Man, its not that serious! If anything would prejudice me against German, it would be that you, a person who knows German, is begin such a goddamn d**k about it. So watch it, or I'm gonna get some prejudices. Notice that you have some pretty glaring prejudices against Japan and Japanese, so you shouldn't be talking about being prejudiced, my good sir. I could be a humongous b***h about that at you, but I'm trying not to. I'll refrain from sailor talk and say, can we just calm down and drop it? This is really not as serious as you make it out to be. I'm just out for some language related fun, not to insult anyone or language.

Hoooo. Debates are fine, but don't be rude now, guys. :]
I also don't think no languages should be discriminated against. Sure, there are a lot of Japanophiles around who put a really bad name on people like me, Hermonie, Vajra, and so many others, who learn Japanese because the languages is beautiful, interesting, and a bit of a challenge. There's also the fact that if one language is taught in many schools around you much more than other languages, you easily grow tired of it and maybe feel like, if you learn that language, people are going to think you're just 'going with the flow'. I know I sometimes feel like that with Spanish, French and German, but those three are the only choices for a third (and fourth, if you're studying languages) foreign language in Iceland. Still, I'm learning French and German and I like them a lot, and I really want to take Spanish one day as well. mrgreen
So I understand how you feel about German, Vajra. But Dutch sounds really awesome, I so want to learn that. And Icelandic, although it isn't very useful at all, it's interesting and most foreigners seem to think it sounds really neat, too. ;Ð I'm working on some more Icelandic lessons by the way, for the thread in the Lessons subforum here. :]

It's been a long time since I posted in many of my other guilds, so I'm going to go do that later. Between that, writing lessons, and studying, y'all might not see me around here for a little while. 3nodding

I've heard the book was okay, though I never intend to read it. I was forced to be in the same room as the movie once, and all I can say is *retch*.
Sorry.
The main travesty is the pathetic excuse for a conlang that guy made up. That truly deserves a *retch*.
