Nebiros smiled when he saw her small smile. He came closer, standing next to her as he, too, looked over the glassy surface of the lake.
"You seem to have a lot on your mind." He stated, figuring it was useless to beat around the bush with small talk. "What troubles you so?"
His icey eyes cast a rather warm gaze to her. Truth be told, he was sympathetic to the female in trouble or pain. That went far back into his history, but that was a different story. For now, he was more interested in what had her so placid.

She took another drag of the cig in her hand before she'd answer. Just the taste of the nicotine helped her, even if it was just a little.
"Just mindless thinking of the past few events..."
She gave an absent smile. They had changed her a bit...mostly the idea of being a mother had changed her or something in her.
"I guess I admire my father to some degree...."

He watched her, taking in her movements. Each motion gave away to what was occupying her mind; underlying depression and a pain still somewhat fresh. Hearing her words confirmed it, feeling slightly worried when seeing her absent smile. He had heard something from Jealousy that Alexis had gone through a rather rough time......he just wasn't sure what it was, being that the Voice hardly ever told him much.
To her statement about her father, he raised an eyebrow curiously.
"How so?"

She grinned then, one full of mischeif then.
"It's not easy being an incubus and having a daughter to raise."
She'd been a handful. Always being spoiled by daddy and only having heard the word no from her mother and her uncle. She needed to be back to her usual self...
"I guess I was wondering what it would have been like, having a little one run around." Another little puff and she was almost done with the cig.
"I guess I won't know..."

So....that's what was troubling her. He'd observed this before, many years ago. A sigh escaped him and he placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch light in case she wanted to move away. This behavior wasn't like his usual perverseness. He took sympathy for her.
"I'm so sorry for your loss." He said softly, "Someone close to me went through the same thing as you."
He looked off to the side, getting a rather distant look to his eyes. He could remember his mother, sobbing as if a wound within her was causing a deeper agony than anyone could know.

She finished her smoke and flicked the butt down, stepping over it to stamp it out completely lest a fire start. She turned her eyes to his, seeing how their color reminded her of her father's in their paleness.
"Who if you don't mind me asking."
She brushed her bangs from her face. She was certain her mother knew what she was feeling, yet her mother had a child to hold whereas Alexis felt empty. She didn't understand love or really how to be a mother, but it seemed something to complete.

"My......mother."
He sighed heavily as his mind drifted back to that day, his eyes taking on a misty hue of reminiscance. It took him a few moments before he could bring himself to regale.
"My mother wasn't a saint. She earned her living by offering her body. One of her patrons was my father......another was soon to foster what would have been my sibling. I never saw my mother so happy when she found out she was pregnant. She glowed all over." He smiled halfway as he could see her shining face, laughing when she felt the child within her.
"He found out, though. He wasn't happy about it. He came to our house and argued with my mother about the child and his responsibility to it. She refused his orders for her to get rid of it.......so he took it into his own hands. He hit her repeatedly.....on her face, in her stomach....and all I could do was watch. I was still young. He became so angry that he grabbed her arms and threw her off of our front deck, leaving so that he couldn't be blamed for her bruises."
Beside him, his free hand clenched into a fist as anger surfaced on his feathers, hardening them into a scowl.
"My mother already knew she had lost the child. When she went to the doctor and he confirmed it, she broke down. I never saw her in so much pain. I told the doctor who did it to her and he notified the authorities. They imprisoned the man for murdering the unborn baby.....but it was no consolation to her. She never recovered from it."
He would stop there, unable to go on about how he watched her slowly fall apart over the years until her death. He sighed heavily to fight back the furiousness that had surfaced during his telling.

She did the only thing she could think of and that was to embrace him tightly. She'd listened to his tale intently. Her loss was an accident... simple startlement that resulted in a bad fall and a twisted ankle that was now healed.
She couldn't really say anything because she'd never known her mother to have another kid by anyone. She even buried her face into his chest, closing her eyes and simply breathing his scent in. Touch was usually a comfort to her, no matter if it was innocent or seducting.
"I'm not sure what to say..."

Nebiros was a little surprised when she embraced him tightly, but he wasn't about to refuse such contact. His arms encircled her gently, lightly rubbing her back as he felt her nuzzle his chest. He couldn't help but smile, looking down at her as she spoke.
"There's nothing to say," He said quietly, one hand brushing her hair back, "Things like that happen in life. The Fates give and take.....for what reason, only they know. We're just the pawns on which they play their strategies. Sadly, you've become one of the victims to their cruel tests."

She nuzzled him, running a hand along his feathers in silent comfort.
"I guess so...though I seem to be a favorite of their games."
She smiled. Yea, a favorite. Yet she ended up beating their odds....like her mother.

He smiled again when she nuzzled, hugging her to him as he felt the sting to her words. It seemed they both were favorites. When she pet his feathers, a soft purring noise came from his chest. He couldn't help it.
"True.....but it has made you strong. You are who you are because of the cruel games you've unwittingly participated in. Still......something like this could bring even the strongest person down."

She smiled warmly. She liked his purring. She thought it was cute so she continued to pet his feathers.
She thought how her mother was a good example of fate constantly toying with you and always bouncing up from being down.
"And you? Did you become stronger because of.." she trailed off. She wasn't sure she wanted to mention his mother's loss but she hugged him tighter before she finished. "Because of your mother?"

Nebiros continued to purr as long as she pet his feathers. She could have felt the warmth that radiated from the obsidian apendages.
"In a sense......though I'm not so sure." He sighed, figuring an honest answer was the best. "After seeing both the joy and the pain that could come from being a parent......the feeling of losing your flesh and blood.....I don't know if I could stand that. Being so attached to someone and then losing them.....even before they make it into your world."
He shook his head a little, his embrace tightening around her.
"I may not look like it.....but I couldn't stand that loss. Much like my mother, it would probably destroy me from the inside."

She smiled at the warmth in his feathers. So unusual for feathers but she wasn't always around a phoenix either.
"Take it from someone who just lost hers..It's not easy and it does hurt."
She sensed they both needed distraction, even just a small one so she kissed is cheek.
She was too much like her father but her mother's influence was a blessing.

He nodded when she spoke of knowing the pain firsthand. Being male, he couldn't imagine how much it would hurt the carrier, but having seen what it did to the one person closest to him.....he couldn't bear the thought of going through that.
When she kissed his cheek, he couldn't help it when he grinned. Turning his head a bit, he kissed her lips lightly. For once, he didn't want to move too quickly....or even seem like he was trying anything at all. It was in his behavior, though, despite what restrictions he tried to place on himself.
