Maia watched the fireflies in the yard, apparently comfortable. She smiled. "I never thought I'd find a kind of bug I liked," she admitted. "Most of them are creepy. These are nice."

"Even their babies glow," Dari said. He put the glass jar on the table between himself and Toby and Maia. He wasn't going to intervene at all if he could help it.
Toby sipped his drink again, having to crane his neck a bit to get around Maia, and then nodded. "Yeah, there's exceptions to every rule."

"Glow worms?" Maia asked. She smiled, taking the jar from the table and studying the lightning bugs within. She watched them a moment before setting the jar back on the table.
"Like you," she said. "You're an exception to the rule."

"Mmhm," Dari said with a nod.
Toby turned his head up then and furrowed his brow. "Who? Me, or him?" He gestured to Dari with his drink. He looked to Maia as if she could make eye contact with him with her ears.
"Either way she's correct," Dari commented.

"Both of you," Maia decided, turning slightly. She still failed to make eye contact with Toby. She smiled at Dari. "You two are exceptions to quite a few rules. You're special."

Maia began to turn and Toby looked for a moment like he might kiss her cheek, and that was his intention at first, but he rethought his decision and blew a raspberry instead. Dari knew, though. Oh, he knew.
"We are," Dari nodded, "but I've never met a person who wasn't special in some way; that didn't break some rule."

Maia paused, frowning slightly at the noise that came from Toby. She turned to sit side saddle on his lap. "Are you making rude noises?" she asked.
She nodded at Dari. "Everyone's special," she agreed. "You can turn into a seal, and a merman, that's pretty special."

Toby smirked at Maia. "I might be." He took a sideways sip from his glass. "What do you plan to do about it?"
Dari shrugged. "Not 'turn into'. I can shape myself in ways, but I can't 'turn into' them. You can turn into a seal. Toby can turn into... that... thing. I can just shape."

Maia considered the question. "Nothing," she said after a moment, grinning. "You shouldn't though, you'll be a bad influence on the fireflies."
"Shaping is just as special," she said, smiling at Dari. "And you make a good honorary selkie."

"Always," Toby said.
Dari just shrugged. Shaping ad changing were two things so different you really couldn't compare them, could you? But humans liked to try.
"Should we let them go?"
Toby looked to the fireflies in the jar. Most were just sitting and blinking. He turned to Maia.
"What do you think?"

Maia didn't have to think about that question long. Freedom was much preferred to being trapped. "Lets let them go," she said, taking the jar and offering it to Toby. "They don't look too happy now," She said.

Toby put down his drink, took the jar, and was forced to hug Maia close to turn off the lid. None of the beetles flew out. He placed the jar back on the table.
"Maybe they're just resting," he said. They didn't seem too interested in sudden escape. The other bugs weren't daring to come near the big scary predators, but the bugs in the jar seemed just fine for the moment. "Hellooo..." Toby said. He tapped the jar on the table a couple of times and the fireflies flew out. "There we go."

Maia was concerned until the bugs flew out of the jar. She was sure they'd been unhappy. "Bye!" She said, watching them leave.
She gave Toby a hug once the fireflies were out of sight. "What do you normally do in the summer?" she asked.

Toby actually had to sit and think about it. He'd lived a lot of summers. What did he do?
"Work. Go out on the boat. ...mostly work."

"We should do that, go out on the boat," Maia suggested. "Next weekend, maybe?" They'd be able to stay until late, maybe. "Would you like to, Dari?" Maia still liked to make sure Dari knew he was included in any and all activities.
