That's the problem, I don't want Ogres or anything that looks like them. I'm trying to stray away from the large bulking brute, but still have something that could use the same statistics. confused

Ah. Hmmm, ork nobs might work. You'd have to convert them, but they aren't overly large (say, warboss size), but they are bulky enough to look the part.
........ stare

Bulky = bad

I wanted something that wasn't bulky, but could fit the statlines due to other means, such as advanced armour or eing incredibly agile, or something that like. I'm not making converted Ogryns.

Okay. I'll be quet now (wheres that smiley...)
xp Thanks for your help though, I guess I just didn't specify what I was trying to do all that well.

I can't really say what would work out so well. The IG aren't really "supposed" to have high tech armor or anything like that but if I had to offer somthing that is S5 T4 it would have to be a.... I don't know, some sorta telepath or something. mabye a pryrokinetic. who knows but they gotta be on the ogyn bases is all I know. other wise you're gonna come across problems with other players

Sorry Mortium, things with such high toughness and/or Strength and/or Wound values are bulky, that's just how it is.

Edit: I just had a brilliant idea: high-end Battle Servitors. Mount them up on 4 spindly legs, give them wicked looking blades, pincers, or chain weapons, and a large shoulder or chest-mounted cannon representative of the Ripper gun. It's Imperial, it'd be fast and close-combat efficient, and it'd be considered tough enough to be worthy of Ogryn stats.

You'd have to mix one in that's wearing nothing but boxers and has orange hair and a loopy grin, once in a while.

That's actually a great idea, I'll look into it. For those that care, these are my ideas thusfar:

+ Fancy Combat Servitor

+ Three soldiers on one large base (CCQ Squad)

+ Heavy armour and close combat capability

+ Death Cult or Sisters Repentia conversions (as that their superior agility and erratic movements would make them able to avoid more attacks, rather than being able to soak up the damage)

+ Chaos Raptor Squad* ninja

If my translation of this horrible butchery of the English language is correct... It is because very few people know how to maneuver hundreds of models into good positions, do not have the kind of patience to play a Guard army well, and the fact that 'the guard suck' has become a horrible running gag amongst gamers, mostly due to the damn 'flashlight' comparison.

Well commanded guard is steamroller... all those tanks, scores of heavy weapons, and dirty tricks like demo charges or deep striking "kamikaze melta" stormtroopers... add to this possibility to enlist inquisitorial help, and you have a very scary army. Treat infantry squad like missile launcher with 10 wounds, and you'll see difference. And when bad luck strikes your pponent and meq start failing saves all those flashlights are devastating smile Saw terminator squad annihilated off objective by flashlights.

Every army has "dirty tricks" (such as the ork's skorcha buggy of doom. Watch your ten-wound missle launcher kill itself). The guard are no different. I personally find demo charges a dubious gamble at best because chances are, they will scatter to do less than preferable damage. THe guard are a good army, but considering that their basic troops, quite frankly, suck (without upgrades. Cameoline guard can be quite hard in cover). The guard aren't a sucky army, but because they rely on lots of innefectual (usually) troops to protect the big guns, they can be tricky to play. As for the termies, statistically, it could happen. How many lasgun shots did it take, pray tell? I love the guard to death, but they can be frustrating to play sometimes.

I skirmished a Platoon of Guardsmen against a Space Marine Squad (technically, I broke it into two five-man squads) just to see how it would go. Frankly, I was expecting the Space Marines to kick more a** than they did. The SM squad with the Flamer and the Sergeant got up close to the Platoon Command Squad and four of them were killed as soon as the Guard fired on them (four lasgun, two bolt, two plasma, and a melta).

I'll tell you what though, I swear that every single time I rapid fired with that Plasma rifle, one of the dice rolled a one. Luckily, I made the armour save every single time, but it's damned annoying. stressed

Okay, I'd like a clarification of rules, if one of you would be of assistance.

For the Rough Riders, it states that "the squadron can replace their laspistols or close combat weapons with hunting lances". It then states "they will automatically use the lance in the first close combat they fight in a game, after which it cannot be used again."

Does this mean that after they use their hunting lance that they would presumably pull out their close combat weapon and use it as normal, or are you replacing their CC weapon (or pistol) for a one time use item?

It makes a deal of difference for them to have one or two attacks in close combat for the rest of the game.

Yes.

They are equipped with hunting lance + CCW or hunting lance + laspistol. Upon using the hunting lance, they revert to using their (single) remaining hand-to-hand weapon.

Since the lance also disallows the additional close combat weapon bonus in the turn it is used, this means a squadron equipped with lances will never receive an additional attack for having more than one CCW.

Even if they're only mock-ups they're still pretty good. I can't wait to see the finished product.
