Terren's Nightly Ramblings: Ok, whats up with these degrading rap lyrivcs? All these big rap artists like snoop dogg and eminem(yeck!) and people like that, always say something degrading about WOMEN (talk about sexism). Anyway, why do they always degrade women? Why not have it flipped for a change and see what its like!

Because that's how rap is.
Because rap stemmed from a male-dominant subculture based around violence, playing women, prostitution, pimps, gangs, and violence.
That's what it talks about, that's its story - that's why it degrades women. Right, wrong? Not part of the discussion.

Oh, and there are songs that "degrade" men, by "thug ladies." You just have to know the artists.

Us postindustrial citizens don't have the right to call anything as trivial as some chauvinistic song lyrics "uncivilized." Genocide and cannibalism are uncivilized. When you are living in those countries it does seem just silly to consider something like that uncivilized. But when you do live in a country as rich as ours of course our standards will set that on a different standard. I don't think it is an issue of right but rather a concept relative to a situation. Is it uncivilized? Could be. The question is compared to what? Is it uncivilized compared to genocide and cannibalism? Not even close. But compared to events that happen on an average basis in this country, I could see what she means.
