That is the thing...Catholism has had a bad past. But one of the things that I liked about JP2 (John Paul the Second) who was the previous pope was that he was moving Catholics away from the past. He too had acknowledged that it had a bad past. But at this point you can't really change anything, except going back to the roots of what each holiday stands for. Easter...away from the candy and the rabbit and to what it really means, the day that Jesus was said to have ressurected from the dead. Christmas, away from the presents and the tree, and to the fact that that was the day the savior was born (Even though it wasn't the exact day its still the day we celebrate as his birthday. No one really knows exactly when he was born).
