Nah. Badgers are a little ungainly and lumbering at times, but they're mean. Big claws, nasty teeth, horrible temper...don't want to back one into a corner, that's for sure! I'd think of them as being a little odd as a Hufflepuff symbol, because she's usually depicted as kind and gentle.

Kind and gentle like a mother.... like a super-protective mother...
...try to seperate mommy from her babies and watch her dispense her brand of motherly kick-you-in-the-face justice!! RAWR! domokun
Okie. I don't think a badger is so weird anymore xd

Yeah, I guess that works. Me, I'm a little surprised that Ravenclaw's symbol isn't an owl. You know, wise birds and all that. But then, I suppose that with all of the real owls flying around, it's a little too common-place. I don't know. Perhaps owls aren't quite as special symbolically because they're common in wizarding culture.

Isn't there something about eagles being intelligent, or something like that? I don't know, I can't think clearly right now.
The snake for Slytherin and the lion for Gryffindor are pretty clear symbols given the houses' featured characteristics. The badger is a bit elusive to me at this moment...

I did a little research...
In Celtic Mythology:
Serpents symbolize trouble. In the legend of King Arthur, he had certain prophetic dreams about serpents, representing Sir Mordred, who later killed him in a battle that was started at the sight of a serpent. Birds generally symbolize prophetic knowledge, bloodshed, and skill. They are usually the messengers or the message.
A combination of various cultures:
Badger: Supernatural power, mischief, playful. Other world, wisdom, caring. Eagle: Divine spirit, air, the sun, power in battle, protection from evil, clear vision, success, prosperity, wealth, intelligence, renewal, courage. Lion: Solar, splendor, power, majesty, strength, courage, nobility. Serpent: Life, rebirth, resurrection, wisdom, passion, healing, poison, preserver, destroyer, malice, fertility.
Not all will fit, of course. This is a mishmash of all different cultures and their takes on these animals.

Ah, thanks for the info. I've always found mythology quite interesting, although it's not something I'd want to study lol. But it's interesting to know, especially if you read books that include mythological allusions. smile

I love mythology. It's very interesting. I'll look at a chart of constellations and immediately start to wonder what the story behind one or the other is, then go and look it up.

Not to me. I love the way the stories are interconnected, like a great shining web.
