She was known to be a stubborn proud sort and it was figured among the elders of the group that her naming would be linked to that trait, but it took time for the specific event to occur that revealed her true name. Since coming to the Swamp they'd heard about the great Sea at the edge of the Swamp where only the strongest kin could go. It was said to be a place of great beauty. But wasn't there great beauty throughout the Swamp? The young totoma certainly thought so. She and her kin had traveled a long and hard road to reach the place they now called home. One, whom would go on to quickly became the most successful and revered warrior of the tribe, despite being neither the strongest nor the most experienced or skilled among them.
No one openly questioned the strange friendship between one so accomplished and one so… not, but it was clearly a point of gossip. Even as the social dissonance grew, the two remained inseparable. Others would watch as the warrior turned only to his odd friend for counsel in all matters, sometimes even pausing in mid-conversation for a private word, and they would never understand.
Soon the warrior would become tribe’s leader and whispers would grow louder and louder until finally without explanation or room for argument, their leader seemed to snap, angrily declaring their friend to be known as Tactician and the tribe’s greatest asset. Stunned into silence, confusion and then begrudging acceptance the tribe agreed. However the two were never as close after that day, as if something unspoken had been broken between them.

She could smell the sweetness in the air, its scent its own distinct fragrance different from everything else around her. She swore could hear the hum of the honey bee even if the hive was some distance away. It drew her to the hive with wonder and fascination...but mostly, eagerness to get at what lurked inside. When she would disappear for hours on end, at first some grew worried but eventually they knew she would soon return with honeycomb dripping from her mouth. There was an art to retrieving the honey from the beehive without being stung that she became a master of. It was almost as if she and the bee's had a mutual understanding. A silent pact between each other.
They'd see her off on a new journey each day and wait patiently for her return. "Happy searching, Honey Hunter!”. they'd say, never doubting her to come home empty handed. Eagerly they greeted her when she returned with a new treat, “Welcome home Honey Hunter!” Since then, the name stuck and she couldn’t have been prouder.
