"Ma-o!" Zhane cheered from the driveway, clapping his hands as the postman handed Talon the Friday mail out the window of his cart and pulled up to the next house. As his father started back inside, Zhane ran up to meet him, clinging to his leg and walking in-step with his father. Or trying to, anyway.

"Zhane, you're going to make me trip over you." Talon muttered impatiently as he sifted through the envelopes, plucking out the ones that were addressed to him amid the ones for Karma, Dave, and Kendall. Let's see....bill from the pediatrician, newsletter from the GMFC, coupons, 'You may already be a winner'...

Setting his jaw, Talon tried not to growl in agitation. God dammit, they said it was going to get here today...!!

"Day-ee kin I haff juice?" Zhane's voice floated up, piercing the fog of annoyance.

"In a minute." he snapped, not meaning to, as he impatiently shuffled through the rest of the envelopes. It wasn't there. THOSE FUC-- he blinked, finding what he was looking for on his second shuffle through. It was a plain white envelope, hand-addressed to him by someone with spidery print and in the corner was Aecas One Studio's logo. Well, at least they delivered when they promised to. It would be nice to have a bit of extra money this time around too, but that still didn't mean that he especially liked working two jobs. In fact, since he was still on his trial run, he hadn't signed any contracts yet so he was thinking of telling Ace and company that while the show was certainly much less stressful than his day job, it wasn't meeting his financial needs and that he was going to go ahead and bow out.

Sliding a finger under the envelope's flap, he tore it open and pulled the folded piece of paper within out to examine it.

...if he were a weaker man, he might have needed to sit down a moment as he eyed the figure printed on the check. Stopping short, just shy of the front porch, he simply stared for a long moment, blinking wide eyes.

"Day-ee!" Zhane complained, tugging his dad's tail. This was not getting him his apple juice any faster. What was he looking at up there anyway? Rising to his tiptoes until he wobbled dangerously, Zhane tried without success to see what Talon was so caught up in. Without explanation, Talon reached down, scooping Zhane up hastily and strode into the house as quickly as he could. He headed straight for the kitchen where he set his son down, grabbed up the phone, and punched in a number frantically.

Zhane could do little more than goggle up at Talon, blinking eyes that were almost as wide as his father's had been a moment ago. Daddy was acting weird and he didn't know why. Oh well, he could just get his own juice, he decided, as he toddled toward the fridge and began to tug on the door.

"Yeah, can I talk to Chris?" Talon said as the line was picked up, not noticing Zhane fighting with the fridge. "Chris? Hello, its Talon. I--no, I got it. I wanted to ask if there was some sort of mistake or if this was an advance or....no, that's not it at all. I just...one thousand eight hundred and sixty dollars? You said I'd be making twenty an hour! I do three hours of work a night, five days a week. How does that come out to almost two grand??"

"Twenty dollars an hour, Talon, is what you make for showing up and doing your thing with Ace." Chris explained patiently on the other end of the line. "That's what WE here at the studio pay you. Now you also take into account that we are Gaia's only source for talk radio and that they'd like to keep us around. So everybody who works here also recieves royalties from Gambino, who funds this whole shebang. By the time you take into account the donations from the viewers and the ratings bonuses, it adds up to a lot more than the base sum of what we're paying you. Ace makes about a grand a SHOW. What you're getting is entry level stuff. I thought we went over this at the interview..."

"You may have..." Talon sighed, running a hand through his hair and trying to stop the room from spinning. Holy s**t.... "I spent half of that interview trying to keep my--"

"--your son out of trouble, I know. I was there." Chris replied, sounding like he was smiling. "And how is he, by the by?"

"He's....fine, I guess." the ijiuo answered, his voice sounding far away. Zhane, at this point, had gotten the fridge open and was now tightly hugging the apple juice jug to his chest as he lifted it out of the fridge, his small arms quaking with effort.

"Glad to hear it. If that's all you needed, then, I'd like you to come in an hour early tonight. We drafted you up a contract and we'd like to go over it with you."

"Okay." he agreed with a sort of robotic tone to his voice.

"Talk to you then. Ciao." Talon opened his mouth to return the farewell just as a click resounded in his ear, making him hang up instead. He stood there for a long moment, collecting his scattered wits. He'd been prepared to be making slightly less than he did at Dolphin, not nearly four times as much. That meant....that meant he didn't need two jobs at all...

The left corner of his mouth hitched up in a broken sort of smile. Well...how about that? Someone had finally sprung something on him that he found to be -good- news for once.

*KRUNK*

He spun around to see Zhane looking guiltily up at him as he stood in a spreading pool of apple juice that seeped from the uncapped plastic jug.

"Uh oh..." the little boy said, immediately skittering across the floor to grab at the paper towel roll. "I goddit! I goddit!" he chanted frantically, yanking down a string of towels as he ran to place them over the amber puddle, not bothering to tear them off first. When the juice was more-or-less covered in a nest of sodden paper towels that were still connected to the roll, Zhane looked up at his father and waved a hand at the mess. "Aw ceen!" he announced, smiling big and hoping that Talon wouldn't start yelling.

To his credit, he didn't. Taking a brief inventory of the fact that Karma was home today and would be available to deal with Phaerna should she awaken, there shouldn't be any objection to him dodging out for an hour or so. Ignoring the mess entirely, Talon knelt and put a hand on his son's shoulder.

"Zhane? You wanna come to the bank with me?"

After bringing Phaerna back from the pediatrician to have her sudden growth spurt examined (and only to be told, incidentally, that he worried too much), Talon had taken the rest of the day to simply relax.

Dolphin had called no less than eight times wondering where he was and he'd not answered a single one. Most people would have advised him against burning bridges at this point, but he'd already signed the contract. He was good for three years of work unless unforeseen difficulties popped up.

"Hold still, Zhane..." he muttered, trying to drag a comb through his son's hair.

"OW!" the child complained swatting at his head every time the toothy piece of black plastic passed over his scalp.

"Well it wouldn't hurt if you'd hold still." he replied impatiently. "Your sister has a lot more hair than you and SHE behaved." Phaerna, for her part, sat on the couch hugging her mouse plushie to her chest in silence, her brown hair tied back with a bit of blue ribbon. It was like comparing apples and oranges, really. Phaerna never protested -anything-.

"Owowowowow! No more!" Zhane demanded, making a grab for the comb.

"You behave yourself, or you're not going with me and your mother tonight." Talon warned. The child's eyes instantly lit up.

"Mummy!" he grinned. It had been nearly a week since any of them had seen Yeande last.

Talon's green eyes watched Zhane for a moment, and then looked sidelong at Phaerna. The two toddlers were dressed in nicer-than-usual clothes that just BEGGED to have things spilled on them or to get torn. Somehow, he knew this was all going to end in tears. "Come on." he told the children, plucking Phaerna off of the couch into the crook of one arm and taking Zhane's hand. "Let's get this over with."

Saying so, the three of them headed out of the house toward Youko's residence.

Yeande

Yeande was getting ready... and was humming softly to herself as she did. It wasn't often that she went out, and she was looking forward to seeing Talon and the kids again. Part of her felt guilty at the fact that she'd just been so frazzled the last few weeks, but she was hoping that now she'd be able to participate a bit better.

Youko had finally gotten concerned about the sulking Ijiuo and had taken her back to the clinic for an evaluation. The official diagnosis... post-partum depression. And before Yeande could try to alleviate this with yet another child, he'd made her talk to the doctor and get medication for it.

It seemed to have been the right idea, because Yeande had to admit that she honestly felt better than she had in ages. Smoothing the dress down over her hips, she turned to look in the mirror again. It was a simple outfit, a halter-style top and form-fitting. One could only barely tell that she'd had a child not long ago, and it made her smile. The fabric was soft against her skin, and a deep indigo that brought out her eyes. Now she just hoped that Talon liked it as well.

When she heard the door downstairs, she quickly brushed a lock of hair back into place behind one earfin, and darted for the stairs, looking forward to the evening with her family.

When she opened the door, she was greeted immediately by two children latching onto her before Talon even got a good look at what she had on.

"Mom-eeeee!" Zhane grinned, flinging his arms around her waist....or as much around her waist as he could, at least.

Talon tolerated it with a sort of resigned annoyance, having gotten used to the idea that not only did kids reflexively favor their mother, but that they were going to be the first to get to hug her as well. As such, he settled for leaning in to plant a kiss on Yeande's cheek.

"You look wonderful." he told her softly. "Ready to go?"

As far as she knew, this was just a dinner date. He'd still not told her about the job shift.

Yeande was beaming, scooping up Phaerna and crouching down to hug Zhane tightly. "There's my babies," she said, giving each a kiss before glancing up to Talon and nodding softly. "Just give me a moment?" she asked, not wanting to let go of the children just yet.

Phaerna clung to Yeande, tiny arms wrapped around the woman's neck as her wings fluttered behind her. She didn't make a lot of noise, but smiled as she buried her face against the dark hair. Zhane, on the other hand, was already babbling away about everything that crossed his mind, all at once. From the new toy he'd gotten a few days before, to the bug he'd found attached to the screen.

Yeande took it all in stride, listening attentively until Zhane went off on a tangent and started to toddle away towards the toy box in the corner of the livingroom. "No, Zhane, we have to go!" She reached, grabbing his hand and bringing him back towards them as she stood at full height and leaned in to kiss Talon gently. "You look wonderful too," she said, letting her lips linger against his for just a moment. "And I'm ready now."

Talon's wings reflexively tensed and then relaxed. For a brief moment, he wished that he'd been able to talk Karma into babysitting after all. Christ, HOW long had it been since he and Yeande had had a moment alone together? But then, he'd been the one stuck with the kids the last week or so and Yeande hadn't seen them at all...that would hardly have been fair.

"Let's get going, then." he nodded, reaching down to pick up Zhane, despite their son's protests that he wanted to walk himself as he let Yeande continue to hold Phaerna and headed for the Honda. "Our reservations aren't for another forty-five minutes or so, I just want to make sure they don't give our table away"

He'd never made reservations before. He'd never HAD to make reservations before. You didn't need them at places like McDonalds or Taco Bell, which had been the extent of his dining out experience. But you certainly needed them at a place like Casa Bonita. A week in advance, even.

"Reservations?" Yeande smiled, hooking her arm through Talon's as Phaerna rested her head on her other shoulder. "What's the occasion?" She stopped then, staring at him in abject horror. "I didn't forget an anniversary, did I?"

Her mind was running through dates, trying to match up something and coming up blank.

Dammit, I thought men were supposed to be forgetful... Yeande looked up at him apologetically. "If I did forget a date, I'm sorry. Things have just been really strange around here lately." She hadn't told him about the medication yet. But she'd also learned her lesson about NOT telling him things, and made herself a promise to tell him while they talked at dinner.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 6:58 am

"No occasion. Not really..." he wasn't a very good liar, but no, it wasn't their anniversary. Not even as obscure of an anniversary as the day they'd met. He didn't think so, at least. Hell, he couldn't remember.

Opening the left back door, he fiddled with one of the two car seats taking up the space, shoving straps aside and adjusting shoulder loops before placing Zhane into its clutches and buckling him into place. He was almost reaching the age where he was too big for carseats entirely, but for now it still sufficed. It struck him with a sort of bittersweet force to see that Zhane would soon no longer be a baby of any description.

"How have you been feeling?" he inquired, closing Zhane's car door and moving to open the other side for Yeande so she could buckle in Phae. "I tried to call last night and Youko said you'd gone to bed early."

Leaning into the car, Yeande got Phaerna detached from her hair and started to get her buckled in as well, getting her thoughts in order while she stalled for time. Once that was done, she stood again, looking over the roof of the car towards Talon with a faint smile. "I've been doing a lot better today. I... I went back to the clinic the other day. Well, Youko dragged me there. He was getting worried because I've apparently been acting really irrational."

She folded her arms against the top of the car door, sighing faintly. "The Doctor said that it was post-partum depression. And it was bad enough that she prescribed me some pills to take for it. I didn't want to, and I think I screamed at Youko for dragging me there to begin with. But I really do feel better now that I've started taking them. I'm not leaning over an empty crib and crying anymore, at least."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 7:10 am

Talon blinked at her, startled. The mental image of her standing over an empty crib and crying was, honestly, heartbreaking. But if that were the case, why was it she'd left HIM with the kids so often lately? He wanted to ask, he nearly did, and at the last moment thought better of it.

"I didn't know." he said quietly, stepping forward to gather her against him in a tight hug. "I'm sorry it had to come to that, but I'm glad they're helping." It was yet another case of being ill-informed due to living under two different rooftops. No wonder there was zilch communication between them these days. Maybe that was something else they needed to discuss.

...they needed a subject change anyway.

Drawing back from her and heading for the driver's side door, he fumbled the keys out of his pocket, unlocking his door and then reaching in to unlock hers for her.

"Its getting awfully crowded in either of those houses." he stated. "I think that might be part of the problem."

Nodding, Yeande let her hand rest against him for as long as she could before he moved away, and then she got into the car to settle into the seat. "It IS getting crowded... and I hear Karma's expecting another little one soon." She glanced to him then, tilting her head to the side. "I was thinking of looking for a job of my own. I mean, I know you hate your job, but if we both work, then we might be able to save up enough to get our own place soon."

She was hoping that's what he wanted to do... it would be silly to mention it if he didn't want to get a place together. "I miss you... and I miss the kids."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 7:20 am

Talon's eye twitched slightly. How had SHE heard about it? It figured he'd be the last to know Karma was having another baby. That still didn't mean he felt bad for blowing up at her about it, though.

"We miss you too. Badly." he told her, putting the key in the ignition and starting the car. A moment later, they were rolling out of the driveway and on their way. "That one complains every time I give him a bath that I won't give him soap horns like you do, whatever that means." he added, pointing at Zhane in the rearview mirror who was waving at every car they passed.

"...that and I hate having to ask permission to spend the night with you." he added, flushing a bit unconsciously. That was always lovely and awkward. Its not like Youko didn't know what would be going on when Talon and Yeande closed themselves up in her room for the night, and it made the whole thing just a tad more awkward as he wondered if anyone was listening.

"But...don't look into a job just yet."

Chuckling, Yeande looked over her shoulder towards Zhane. "His hair's getting long enough that when I shampoo it up, I can make it into horns... or a mohawk... or whatever we decide. it's fun for him and makes it so that he's not throwing a fit about getting clean."

At the mention of 'permission', Yeande flushed scarlet, nodding and turning back to Talon to watch him instead of their son. "Yeah... Youko's nice enough about it, but I still feel strange. I really do want us to get our own place though, and I thought that maybe if we were both working, it would happen faster." She tucked herself into the seat then, staring at the street as they passed. "It'll be good to not have to worry about who's listening in or going to blackmail us later."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2005 7:43 am

"Right." he agreed. Well, at least she was receptive to the idea. He'd been worried there would be theatrics about not wanting to leave the rest of the extended family behind. That had been all well and good when the "extended family" consisted of Karma, Dave, Youko, Envy, Kendall, and Raven, but things had quickly gone downhill about when the fa'e kids had shown up, and quickly following them, several others.

Now either house was like a goddamn page out of a Where's Waldo? book.

"It might happen sooner than we think, you never know." he told her, braking for a red light and putting on the blinker to turn into the restaurant's parking lot.

"Doggie!!" Zhane announced from the back seat, pointing at a man walking a lanky Great Dane. "Ist Doggie!"

Phaerna looked up from staring off into space and turned her head to see what her brother was talking about. Eww....BIG doggie. She clutched her mouse a bit closer and frowned.

Turning over her shoulder, Yeande saw the dog and nodded, pointing to the animal. "That's right, Zhane, it's a doggie! Do you know what colour the doggie is?" She reached then to cup Phaerna's cheek lightly, smiling to the girl. "Doggie wont' get you sweetie... it's a nice doggie." She watched Zhane then, to see if he'd started to learn colours yet or not. If he hadn't, she had found a wonderful book when out shopping with Youko that would help.

"Honestly, Talon, it can't happen soon enough for me. I mean, I don't have it as bad as you do, it's just me, Youko, the girls and Kaeru. But still, I want to know that I don't have to look for frogs int he tub before taking a bath... or make sure that there's still hot water in the house before turning the shower on. It's frustrating as hell."
