Richard blinked caught very much off guard by the question. His brows furrowed, how the heck do answer that question. Richard had a sneaking hunch that it might be one of the forbidden questions, that 25 years of marriage had trained him to be very careful with questions like those. Even if he had moved on from Cathy that training had remained firmly in place.

"Um, Your a very good person and I admire your sunny disposition." He said the words but his face was screwed up in a "what exactly are you getting at" look.

Awen didn't really look up at Richard and simply stared at the table as she nodded. "Right right. Sorry, silly question." She gave him a smile but still didn't focus on the man infront of her before looking back to the table.

"Anyways, what kinds of things are you really looknig for for the next issue? I mean... anything... you want me to keep an eye out for?"

Richard was still confused, "Is there something wrong Awen?" It was quite oblivious he hadn't said what she wanted to hear.

"As for the next issue what I need are some useful how tos for making things easier on the island. A simple tailoring how to would be great. Tail holes and such." He wriggled his little arms, his own shirt was in bad shape. "You know something useful. Or juicy gossip works too." His eyebrows moved like caterpillars.

Awen didn't really want to be asked what was wrong. She would have preferred just to covertly go about trying to gather information on how she came across to other people. Well... perhaps covertly was a little strong of a word... but she couldn't just outright say her reason, that would just sound so... self conscious? Immature? Pathetic? Well perhaps she was.

However when she looked up to reply to Richard the first and only thing she really saw was him wriggling his eyebrows and she couldn't help but burst into a small stint of laughter. "Well, I'll keep the old ears open for gossip.... I may be able to work on something for new aquatic islanders. Not all will be very happy news though, considering the majority of aquatics are.. well... loosing their legs and all."

She definately avoided the man's question. Or perhaps she had just forgotten because of funny eyebrows? Who knows...

Richard chuckled and then winced a little. Damn boob. It was fine unless he moved. "Oh new neighbors? Who moved in? I also have a recently changed list that needs updating if you'd care to poke around for that bit of information. I suppose I also need islander of the issue. Antony maybe." Richard grinned at the thought. "I'd need a picture of her though."

"Oh, um... No one has moved in per say I don't think. Not that I've noticed anyway, but I haven't paid much attention to the other duplexes to be honest. But I know that... Alec has lost his legs, and Cody, I've heard rumours about Billy but I haven't seen him since.... his first change I think. There are a few others... a guy with really big jaws, I don't remember his name and Sayuri, a really sweet girl. But I'm the only one so far to have kept legs, or is definately going to. I really don't know what to make of it though.... I feel bad about it to be honest. Why them and not me? Will I be the only one? I don't know... As far as recently changed I'll keep an eye out but I don't see too many people when I mostly am confinded to the lake and rivers..."

Richard made an annoyed sound the mention of Billy. "Trust me, that b*****d is all tentacle and spines." Richard wasn't likely to forget about Billy's spines for a very long time. "As for the legs, well just be happy for yourself. Its not your fault, survivor's guilt won't get you anywhere, right?" A little voice in his head shouted that Richard's entire life had been shaped by survivor's guilt but he mentally squelched the thought.

"Anything else you want to talk about?"

"Yeah I know." The girl almost mumbled as she glanced away again. "But I guess you win some and lose some right? This just happened to be one of those ones I ended up winning."

Staring off a little at space she shook her head a little and tied a smile in Richard's direction. "I don't think so, just came for a congrats on the newsletter, a little late on my part but, you know how the island is. Distracting, busy and yet all at the same time not."

Awen made her move to get up but seemed to hesitate a moment, there was something, on the edge of being spoken but another slight shake of her head and she stood up. "I should probably be going...."

She couldn't talk to him about this issue. Her feeling lonely was nothing to bring up. The poor man had lost his wife after so long, he had the right to feel lonely. Awen.... did not. She was just insecure about herself and her state, no need to dredge up memories of the man's wife and his pain just because this young fool is feeling a little alone. She knew if she would talk to anyone she'd talk to the old man, he was trust worthy, honest and smart. He knew what to say and when, as far as Awen was concerned. He couldn't talk to Jordan or any of those she was sort of close with because the majority either had it worse than her or were a happy couple and she wouldn't spoil their fun not even for a moment. She couldn't talk to Sabin about this for.... quite obvious reasons.... so if anyone it would have to be Richard. But she wouldn't do that to the old man. She couldn't.

"Um, but hey, thanks for the chat."

There was something bothering the manta ray, Richard just couldn't put his finger on what. Unfortunately for her, Richard loved to try to solve other people's problems as it distracted him from his own. He fixed her with his predatory eyes, iris's wide in the dim light of his duplex.

He frowned for a moment. "To put it in different terms. Awen you are a grody shuckster so shat's you tale, nightingale." He grinned proud that he had remembered the slang of his youth.

Pausing Awen stared down at the man with the most amusingly puzzled look on her face. "I'm a.... what?"

Her jaw was indeed half open, one eye squinted slightly as she tried to decipher what the man had said. She knew it had to be something from his day, she remembered the style from those old detective movies her and her father used to watch, but she could not quite figure out what a grody shuckster was.

Richard laughed so hard it hurt his chest. "Ha Ha Ha, Ow ow ow!," the pain sent his hands to his chest. Once he managed to stop laughing he looked up with that miscehivious glint in his eyes. "Its old time for you're a piss poor lyer so sit your but back down and tell me what's wrong. " He couldn't contain a small chuckle.

Awen shook her head with a laugh. She knew he'd seen right through her, as usual she's not a very good lyer and she knew it. But she wasn't about to just let the cat have her like that.

"Well, old timer, it's not that big of a deal. And I really should get back to the water soon. Look." She held out her arm. "I'm getting really flakey already!"

"Alright, I understand. I'll just have to go to print with the headline," Richard outlined a rectangle with his fingers. "Something is bothering the resident Manta but she won't tell. More details to follow! Then of course I'll just have to put in a page or two of speculation. I'll touch on global warming, boys, swim suit fashion and the drop of water quality since Billy moved into the lake." He stepled his hands.

Awen crossed her arms and gave the man a mock glare. "You wouldn't." In all honesty she didn't believe him. To use the newsletter for such a silly thing. It was just a threat and nothing more. Still it made her semi-smile and at least let the manta know the man cared about her.

Richard crossed his arms and tried to look stubborn but that mischevious glint still twinkled in his eyes. "I'm the editor, I can put anything in it I please. Do not test me." He waggled a claw at her.
