tapping's not bad and can be extremely helpful, but i've stopped after a while because when i performed i did end up making a loud tapping sound on the stage and the bd got annoyed with me. but anywhere else it's essential in fact if i have no clue at all, i put down my instrument and start clapping or bobbing my hand for up and downbeats. i can't understand my bd's conducting for crap sometimes.

When I was in high school I was told to tap my toes inside my shoes. Move only your toes, not your whole foot. It's not as distracting at concerts and it still helps you keep the beat. wink

I am a college music ed major, and many people tap their feet. Trust me, I know that I do. ninja

Well, the thing is, if you're tapping your foot at the wrong tempo, then you can also distract other people. I don't tap my entire foot because well... yeah, it might distract other people. And plus it's kind of embarassing if you're doing it wrong and everyone can see.

But you can tap your foot inside your shoe. That way no one can see it, so you can't humiliate yourself, or mess anyone else up. That's actually what my beginning band teacher said to do, and I've found it works just fine. biggrin

I can't tap my feet.
My horn rests on my knee and my entire body shakes when I tap, so I don't.
I use the pulse that my keys create.
I can stay on tempo quite well since I can't subdivide, either.

But, foot tapping isn't bad until it's in dress shoes on a gym floor.

I only tap my foot during practices....when i'm in a concert i tap my toes in my shoes!! But i mean...when u used to be in marching band....where u had to march to the beat....going to not moving at all is HARD

I tap half the time during band, and always when I'm practicing [unless I have my metronome on]. Although when we're in a smaller practice room the kid net to me taps his foot [usually slightly off-beat] to a point where I can feel it in my chair. But he has Tourette's, and it effects his feet/legs the most, so I try not to get frustrated. I also have anger management problems, which doesn't help.

I usually only tap my foot when my BD isn't conducting (usually because there's a piano part for the song we're playing). He discourages it because his BD used to nail their shoes to a peice of wood so they could barely move their feet, much less tap them. He also put a clothespin on people's ear if they talked and if you were chewing gum, you had to go the rest of rehearsal with your gum stuck to your nose. Sounds scary... sad

Well, I knew several members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of my town and was taught by a member of the New York Philharmonic, and they all said they tap their foot. My private teacher actually gets mad at me when I don't. She says it's important to playing. 3nodding

River Angel Odin
Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop

Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad?

Psht you are suppose to tap your foot I would smack that guy with his stick
although I dont really tap my foot...
its a rare occusion that I do because Its tiring...
haha i am good at keeping the tempo in my head
