My teacher says "drop your jaw" and I do, and nothing comes out at all. Any advice from those who actually know how to play sax?

Durza the Shade On the sax? Right now, whatever's easy in pep band. I can't get out the low notes, embarrasingly enough. My teacher says "drop your jaw" and I do, and nothing comes out at all. Any advice from those who actually know how to play sax? Well...I have played bari and tenor, mostly bari, and it is weird at first. It takes some time to adjust after playing a higher instrument, and eventually you will learn to drop your jaw and still be able to play. Sometimes taking more mouthpiece helped me, but that goes for high notes, too. After a while, you shouldn't need to take in extra mouth piece, and they will just come. Well...I don't know any really good specific pieces of advice for you. Maybe just keep trying? Eventually you should be able to get them.

Hey, I've got a question about why my reeds have been playing ... stupidly. I used to be able to play with just any reed, but now, I don't know if my mouthpeice is being retarded (Its 5 years old..) or what. I have a reed right now that plays well, but its getting really broken, and i need a new one, but whenever i put a new one in, it sounds really airy. I don't think its a leak in the instrument itself, because if I play with the reed I've got, its fine. I wish i knew what was wrong, because I really want to change my reed sweatdrop

Like companies...because I know when I played Ricos for my entire sax career, then switched to Vandorens I got the same results. Turns out the Vandorens are really thick, compared to others and it didn't fit my mouthpiece quite right.

Ya, you have to play for a day or two to break them in. Also, besides making sure its the same brand make sure its the same number too. (like 3, 4 1/2, 2 whatever.) If its too low or two high its totally different sound and way to play it.

Any advice from those who actually know how to play sax? I had a real problem with low notes at first too (I switched from flute to tenor... so you can just imagine the problems there xp ). I hated low notes for a long while until I got the hang of it. My advice is to practice doing long tones with the low notes, and to practice working down to the low notes. That's what I did. Also, if you're using the school's sax... it could just be that. ^^;; I used the school's sax for close to a year, and I had SO much trouble, but when I got my own (new) sax, it was a LOT easier to get out the notes.
