Physical Description: R'tansky stands at six foot three inches tall and is a very rugged looking man. His hair is a dark brown that he keeps short, though in a very messy style. He is normally seen with stubble or a five o'clock shadow on his face. Haggered and rugged lines tend to make him look older then he actually is. Blue eyes, that have dimmed over years of hardships, stare out and analyze everything with a bit of a scowl on his face.
Normally dressed in his riding leathers, or leathers of some kind, R'tansky does not seem to care about the upkeep of his clothing aside from just covering his nakedness and protecting his body. He does have a brace on his left leg from a threadscore injury that he never fully recovered from.
Personality: R'tansky has been through a lot of things in his life that have shaped him. Because of his current life living without a weyr, he has learned to be extremely adaptable, taking things and rolling with them easily. He can turn a bad situation into something that he can easily work with, making his way out with his skin and Atalith's hide intact. He has always been a man who finds it easy to think quick on his feet.
Although he never had to really deal with it before thread fell, R'tansky was always a survivor, able to work his way through anything. After thread fell and he lost everything, he was forced to focus on this more and more, causing it to become a main part of his personality. He and Atalith have been through so much and being weyrless they have learned how to use the world around them as protection. R'tansky has been able to see signs that might end up leading to trouble, knows how to forage for the right food as well as how to track down wild animals to hunt. He has also learned some of the more unsavory parts like stealing from unsuspecting holders or allowing Atalith to hunt from the herdbeasts that the holds keep. Perhaps not his proudest moment but, you have to do what you have to do to survive.
Although it may not seem like it, considering how R'tansky likes to keep to himself, he does have a compassionate soul. He cannot stand to see people being taken advantage of and while it may be grudgingly in the beginning that he helps them, he does eventually warm up to it and has been known to make friends with those he helps. Though he will not stay around with them after he has helped them, he has been known to keep in contact with them should they ever need him again.
R'tansky was always callous, even before thread returned. He used it as a defense mechanism, and he continues to do so now more then ever. He has always worried about getting close to others and now he wonders if there is even a point since they could be dead and gone soon anyways. This wall can be broken down if you are persistent enough to keep pestering him, just realize that it is going to take a lot of work to get it done. He can be a bit blunt as well because of this, not often caring if the words he says hurt someone or not.
Ever since thread returned, R'tansky has become a solitary being. He was always a bit of a loner and introvert before but it has become more prominent now. All he needs in life is Atalith and the two of them are fine, there is no need to be bogged down by other riders or people, they just get in the way and you have to end up worrying about them. He will never work with someone over an extended period of time and will never join a group for a long time either. If he does work with someone or join a group, it is only for a couple seven days and then he is off on his own again.
Something that R'tansky has forced himself to become on the outside is apathetic. Unless something is happening to someone that he feels he has no choice but to help, i.e women or children being abused or harmed in anyway, he will normally stay out of it and keep a poker face on. He will not interfere with politics of any kind. He has adopted this mask because he does not want anyone getting close to him, he is afraid of losing someone important to him ever again.

History: Born in Southern Hold to a Farmer father and Cooking craft mother, R'tansky spent the majority of his childhood helping his father with the various chores on the farm. He is the eldest of six other children, with two being girls and the rest boys. As the eldest it was his job, as they were born, to help his mother and father take care of them.
He never really cared for the fact he was destined to just be a farmer but R'tansky never thought there was anything else he would be better suited for. He definitely didn't want to be a cook like his mother. So he began to apprentice under his father when the second oldest boy became old enough to take over the duties for caring for the other children.
This continued on until R'tansky was fourteen years old and their small farm was visited by a dragonrider and his blue. The younger children swarmed the dragon, wanting to get a closer look while R'tansky and the older two kept their distance. His father and mother came out just as the rider and dragon declared that he was being searched. In a moment, R'tansky's life changed very quickly. With his mother's urging, more then his father's, R'tansky went with the rider to Southern Weyr and began the life of a candidate.
Life at the weyr wasn't much different then from home, sure he wasn't farming but there were still chores to be done. It was also while he was at the weyr that he met Dione, a fellow candidate. The two became friends after the girl just would not leave him alone and R'tansky finally submitted to calling her a friend. Though as the two stood on the sands and were rejected over and over, their friendship turned into something more.
At the age of 18, R'tansky stood on the sands next to Dione, expecting that he would never impress and return home. Hoping Dione would never impress as well and return to Southern hold with him to settle down so they could create a nice farm. It wasn't to be, for into those thoughts a voice suddenly boomed. Why would you settle for such a boring life R'tanskymine! There is adventure and excitement to be had with your Atalith by your side! As he had been lost in his thoughts, the first egg had hatched and before him stood a very dark bronze hatchling staring up at him with whirling eyes. He had never expected to impress and he was suddenly floored by the feelings that moved through him as impression as made.
The year of training was easy enough for the disciplined R'tansky, but the ever energetic Atalith had a hard time not trying to go fast so that they could be free to do what they wanted. Being separated from Dione was a bit harder but once the two had graduated, R'tansky was pleased to see that his bronze had taking a liking to the woman.
The turns continued to pass with Dione finally aging out. R'tansky was a bit happy, having been worried if he impressed there might be some danger to be fall her, from what he didn't know but there was a fear. A day after she aged out, Dione came to R'tansky and told him she would like to return to her home at Roma Hold, weyrlife or the life of a drudge wasn't for her. Though saddned she wouldn't be staying at the weyr with him, R'tansky understood her feelings and took her home. Though Dione made him promise that he would visit when he was able to and he did just that.
Ten turns later Dione continued to live with her aging mother and father helping them with their farm as well as taking care of the young daughter she and R'tansky had brought into this world. R'tansky was a devoted father with the perfect babysitter Atalith as his partner. He brought gifts to young Kione and spoiled her.
Life continued on without any change and R'tansky began to let his guard down, perhaps thinking that he might be able to leave the weyr behind and he and Atalith could live with Dione and Kione in Roma. It was never to be. Disaster struck when thread returned and Sourthern Weyr scrambled to fight and protect the holds beholden to it. A lot was destroyed and R'tansky was unable to save his families farm, his mother, father and two youngest siblings. Urgency filled him as he and Atalith betweened from Southern to Roma and the home he had been wishing to live in. Everything was gone.
Despair filled him as he stood on the ground where only remnants of a wooden house had been. There was nothing left, no sight of the bodies of Dione and his daughter. It was all just....gone...
He doesn't remember what happened next, if he got on Atalith on his own or if the dragon urged him on, but when he came to out of his funk they were hidden away in a cave and he was curled against the bronze's side.
Life and R'tansky were different after that. Atalith and he traveled the world taking any odd job they wished, stealing when they had to just to survive. When Thread would fall they did their best to find cave systems they could hide away in. Atalith had an urge to fight thread, to go back to a weyr, but with the state R'tansky is in, he knows his rider is not ready for that. Perhaps he will be at some point but he has to heal from losing everything. |

Here There Be Dragons
Name: Atalith
Age: 20
Color: Bronze
Size: 40'
Physical Description: While not the largest bronze, Atalith is about medium size. Muscular in just the right places, he has a sleek appearance to him, made for aerodynamics. His hide is a very deep burnished bronze with lither flecks spotted throughout.
Personality: Atalith is as loyal a dragon as you can ever get. He does what he can to help R'tansky through his troubles, especially now as his rider is overcome with such grief. He wishes to join a weyr but understands he needs to stand by his rider and wait until he is ready.
Like R'tansky, Atalith is very adaptable, able to turn situations into promising outcomes. Being able to look at a problem and find a way around it is a trait he takes great pride in, and since he and his rider share this, they are a formidable team.
Never one to sit still and wait, Atalith is always on the move or always training in some way. He needs to stay in shape for how fast he likes to fly through the air and if he allows himself to get complacent, it will just lead to trouble with their lifestyle anyways.
Competition is the name of the game and Atalith was born for it. He will turn just about anything into a competition, even just having a conversation, but what he really enjoyed was taking part in the flights when he was apart of a weyr, especially gold flights. It was the best time to shine and show off his skill to the other dragons.
Atalith knows his worth and is proud of it. He knows his skills and isn't afraid to show them either. He will often times let his go to his head, looking down on others who are below him or that mess up, causing R'tansky to scold the bronze but really, he is a very fast bronze when all the others are so clunky, he has the right to brag and think so highly of himself.
Hand in hand with his competitive trait, Atalith can be a bit extreme, though it is in more of a sense of an adrenaline junky. He likes to go as fast as he can, push himself as high as he can and fly through some dangerous areas just to get his two hearts beating faster and faster. The more dangerous something is, the more likely chance that Atalith is biting at the bit to be able to take part in it.
