Nightmare: Wren

Entry: User Image Wren had asked his mom and dad what his first words were and neither could remember because Wren had been babbling, all the words he heard from a young age. His mom thought it was "Home" and his dad thought it was "Hug" Wren liked both. Hugs and Home were good and warm, the things that Wren wanted, and what he wanted to build when he grew up.

Nightmare: Quartz

Entry:User Image
Quartz had to ask her parents what her first word was, because she honestly couldn't remember. She'd tried, she'd tried really hard, but nothing had come to mind.

'My first word was "that"', Quartz wrote. 'Mama says I used to point a lot at the pretty things she has on the shelf in her room, and say "that" because I wanted to touch the objects.' The next part had required a little help, since Quartz didn't know what the definition was or how to figure it out. Thankfully her parents had a dictionary in the house, and showed Quartz how to find words. She hadn't quite understood all the words used in the definition, but she was able to copy them down easily enough.

'"That" means the person, thing, or idea indicated, mentioned, or understood from the situation.'

Nightmare: Vincent

Entry:User ImageVincent wasn't entirely certain what his first word was. Giselle couldn't help him, since he could form full sentences when they first met. He could probably ask someone at the orphanage, but it seemed like a lot of trouble to go through. They might not even remember either, since he'd had many caretakers. He thought back as far as he could though, and wrote down the first word he remembered himself saying.

'I'm not sure what my first word was and I don't have anyone I can ask, but I think it was probably "up" or "see". I liked knowing what things were and almost everything was too high for me to see, so I would ask for someone to pick me up so I could look or point to the object I wanted and ask to see it.' He hoped he wouldn't get in trouble for using two words instead of one, but since they were both his best guesses he wanted to write them both down. Vincent pulled out his little dictionary (a gift from Giselle), and looked up the definition to the words.

'"Up", from a lower to a higher place or position.
"See", to notice or become aware of.'

Nightmare: Laurel

Prompt Answer:User Image"I don't think I would have run away from home," Laurel wrote. "I can understand why things might be a little unsettling if your memory is gone, but I would wonder why I was in that home and area in the first place. I would surely have had a reason, even if it's a bad one, otherwise why would I be there at all? I would have gone around trying to find answers and see if anything could trigger my memory. Even if it couldn't and I thought everyone telling me the man I don't remember really is my father were all lying to me, I could at least then attempt to figure out why they were lying to me. Is something going on, or is this place just really strange? Once I had all the answers I thought I needed, then I would leave to go find whatever other answers I might think I required, assuming I needed any new answers at all. I might have also found help when asking around, because you never know who might be able to help you 'til you ask."

Paper finished, Laurel went to turn it in to Ms. Lyra.

Nightmare: Samara

Prompt Answer:User Image"I'd play along, just to see what happens," Samara wrote out, trying to imagine herself in such a situation. "Let's say the father was lying or somehow involved. Without the feelings of family clouding your judgement, you could snoop around and try to find the answers. If you pretended to go along with it you might even have the upper hand, though you'd have to be careful you don't get found out because you're not acting like you might usually. That way though, if something really is up and things go wrong, you have a lay of the land and a more practical view of the people you might be up against. Assuming there are no answers to be found and you have to leave anyway to fix your memory or just because you feel like you don't belong with a family you don't remember, you might at least have a friendly base to return to just in case things start going wrong wherever you are after you've left."

Unable to think of anything else to add, Samara handed in her paper.

His first word... He honestly hadn't been sure what it was, so he had to ask his father when he was visiting. Starlet was not much more help, honestly. Ah well. He settled in to write his response to Miss Lyra's question...

I did not remember what my first word was. It was some time ago, so I had to ask my father what it was. He says that I did not utter a single word. When I began speaking, I used a full sentence right away, so I will choose one of those words for this assignment.

My father told me that the first thing I said was "Alice is my friend."

"Friend" means many things, but the most common definition for friend is "a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard," according to the dictionary.

I suppose that "Alice" was my first word, but since Alice is a name and not really a word, I chose to use "Friend" for this assignment. I hope this is acceptable.

There. That would do... He signed his name and dated the page in his usual meticulous manner, then gave it another read through to make sure that everything was spelled properly. Satisfied, he passed it in to Miss Lyra.

Nightmare: Kaname

Entry:

Kaname remembered their first word, mostly because their Zizi had been trying to get them to say it. It was a rare display of affection that didn't really seem to happen as much these days... but that was probably because Zizi was just busy...

My first word was Zizi! That's what I call my parent because they don't want to be called mother or father. Technically I guess "Zizi" is supposed to be used for aunts or uncles that don't want to be called aunt or uncle, but that's what my Zizi wants to be called. I don't know why, though!

Kaname smiled a little to themself, then signed their name and dated the page before handing the assignment in to Miss Lyra.

Prompt Answer:
I feel that the protagonist's decision was an ill-advised one. The loss of memory and the subsequent loss of identity is disturbing, to be sure, but running away from the situation was not what I would have done. I would have stayed at home, trying to jog my memory to confirm whether this individual was actually my father or not. I would also have informed my "father" of my loss of memory--if they were, in fact, my father, then they might be better equipped to help me out. Running away from home would require me to live on my own, which I do not think I am yet prepared for (with very little money and no way to make a respectable living), and arguably expose me to even more danger (such as hostile strangers). However, I can see why the protagonist chose to run away--firstly, because there was no way to confirm that this was their father, and thus this adult may have been lying to them with the intent of doing harm. Secondly, as a Dryad, leaving their home even as a child would be attached to less social stigma, and, although I cannot confirm it--I have no Dryad friends, and I do not recall the subject coming up in social studies--there may be more social support for an adolescent Dryad on their own away from family.

Nightmare: Sepphora

Prompt Answer:
Sepphora sat, mulling over the assignment as she chewed on the end of her pen. Comparing her own home life to that of the character in the story, she then began to scrawl things out on her paper.

"Being someone who spends a great deal of time alone at home, I am pretty sure I wouldn't really feel horribly bothered by it. I'd probably just stick around and enjoy whatever affections and attentions that my supposed father would try to bestow upon me to try while he tries convincing me I'm his daughter."

She read over what she had written down, tapping her pen on her cheek as she debated adding more to what she had written down.

"I would most likely leave later on depending on a couple different things. It the doting stops if he got frustrated, or I remember and end up not liking what I remember."

Giving a nod, satisfied with her response, Sepphora stood and walked to the teacher's desk, turning her paper in before returning to her seat. At least one class today hadn't been totally evil.

Nightmare: Pluto

Entry: That was a tricky question, when Pluto didn't vocalize very much. They thought long and hard about it and came across plenty of words they remembered saying when younger, words they said wrong or used incorrectly, but it was impossible to remember which was their first. They asked their caretaker but they weren't sure either.

I don't know what my first word was. Maybe it was blue? I think so because I'm blue and blue is my favorite color. There are a lot of different words for blue and blue is the color of a lot of neat things. Blue flowers are my favorite. There's also...

The assignment then turned into a bit of a ramble as Pluto listed off things they knew the names of that were blue. They hoped that was a good enough answer despite feeling a little self conscious at not being able to remember.

Entry: Effie pouted a little, swinging her legs under her desk as she tried to think what her first word was. She glanced over at her sister and saw that Popple was already writing her answer down. Pop's was probably one of daddy's non-bad words. She giggled at that a little and sighed. First word... Finally she started scribbling her answer.

I think my first word was 'boo.' It's what daddu calls daddy all the time, and they played peekaboo with us a lot when we were little.

Nightmare: Aviont'e Phashing

Prompt Answer: Aviont'e entered class to turn in his homework, hoodie pulled up and his eyes dark. He hands Lyra his paper and goes to an empty seat in the back, folding his arms onto the desk and burrowing his head. The book had hit him a little hard, so to speak. It took him almost all the time allowed to do his homework.

In all honestly, the main character was kind of stupid. Even if she'd forgotten who her father was, she should have just accepted the fact that there was a family who loved her for being her. She should have tried to learn about her father all over again instead of fleeing. I would have stayed and tried to learn, not run like a coward.

The paper was wrinkled and smudged with tons of eraser marks...and what seemed like tear stains among the angry scribbles. Some parts Lyra would have to try really hard to discern.

Avilan didn't need to ask his mum what his first word had been. It was a story his mum loved (perhaps a little too much) to tell others. Which was why the little hybrid wrote it down without needing to think too much.

My first word was NO and it has lots of meanings. It can mean STOP. It can mean I DON'T LIKE THIS. It can mean NOT OKAY. Avi left out the bit where he ended up getting food spilled all over him because contrary to what his mum thought, no one needed to know that.

Entry: The pink and brown hybrid wasn't sure if the word Yay was a word-word or a sound-word. She knew that it meant she was happy about something but she wasn't one hundred percent sure about it and didn't want to fail. She had no problem looking or sounding silly for thinking Yay was a word-word but she didn't want to fail.

So she went with what she was sure was a word-word. My first word was up. And it means carry me! Sometimes it means carry me, please. Xelva had added the please as an afterthought. At least the manners lesson was being retained.

Entry: Their first word? This assignment was going to be harder than Lilo expected. How were they supposed to remember their first word? And there was no way Lilo was going to ask their caretaker about it, that lady was just way too bubbly and nice. The baphomet sat back and tried to think. 'It may not have been my first word, but one of my first words were 'bye-bye'. I remember saying it to one of my old friends at the orphanage when they were leaving with their new family.'

Come to think of it, that may have actually been their first word.

Entry: Nef sat back in her chair, kicking her short little legs as she thought about her first word. This was actually a really easy one for her, well kind of. She had always been a bit of a talker so her first words were probably just a bunch of made up nonsense, but she remembered her parents telling her stories about when she was an infant. The neko smiled broadly before snatching her glittery pen and scribbling on the piece of paper in front of her.

'My parents used to always tell me that they knew I'd be a spitfire because my first word was 'play!' I was probably telling my parents that I was bored and that I wanted to do something fun! Playing could mean so many different things! It could be playing tag with your friends, or swinging on the playground, or just exploring!'

Entry: Margret pressed her hands together, looking around the classroom and then at her own homework. Everyone had such interesting first words! She felt a bit embarrassed in comparison since her first word was a bit funny when her parents reminisced about it. She knew her first word because her parents would talk about it all the time and laugh. And it was because of her siblings that she used it a lot still.

"My first word was stop..." She sighed. Her parents said that from an early age she was concerned with her siblings safety and well-being. They were doing something they weren't supposed to do, as usual. "It means not to do. Like 'Don't do that!' or no and it makes people not do what they were doing cause it bothers you or they could get hurt."
