Meditation for attunement

34

Vyntyr's heart raced. She shivered in excitement. Who was this warrior? This master of the Force? Who was this that commanded the battlefield like a chessboard, and rent the mightiest of enemies asunder like so much paper? Vyntyr narrowed her view, trying to get a look at their face. There was a heavy hood in the way, but the body was slender, draped in white and crimson robes. The wind blew and brilliant green eyes stared back at Vyntyr. Brilliant eyes, yes, and pale skin. It was a stranger to Vyntyr. A face that she did not know. But slowly, she began to recognize that face, as alien as it was to her.

No scars. Green eyes. A beautiful young Jedi woman, to all the world a pleasant sight. No scars. Vyntyr's brow furrowed. Why were there no scars? Why were her eyes green? Who was this person? But no. She knew who it was. It was Vyntyr. Somehow, some way, this was an idealized, flawless Vyntyr. A beautiful, powerful Vyntyr. She didn't know what to make of it. This vision was unlike anything she'd ever seen. Her scars were a part of her. Her yellow eyes were a part of who she was, and she had never imagined herself without them. Why now? It could have been anyone in that robe. Why her?

Why Vyntyr? Why a changed Vyntyr? What was wrong with the way she was? Nothing!... True, her scars hurt... True, her eyes and her appearance made her somewhat reserved in others' company... But she was herself. Who else could she be? She was exactly as she had been meant to be! As she watched, that alien face grew concerned... And before her eyes, it began to disfigure. The flawless ivory skin began to redden and pucker as criss-crossing lines emerged until, like a road map, scars littered her face. The eyes began to slowly shift, turning from brilliant green to tarnished yellow. The face that stared at her now was her own face, though certainly older. There was pain on that woman's face. In those yellow eyes. Not for herself, but for someone else. Sympathy. Vyntyr awoke, trembling, and wiped tears from her eyes as she rushed out of the meditation chamber. A knight tried to stop her out of concern "I'm fine." and she ran past him. She didn't stop until she was in her room, curled into a ball on her bed.

Vyntyr sat in her room, in front of her mirror, just staring at the face in her reflection. She reached up and touched her face, tracing a scar with a delicate finger and wondering what the vision meant. It was clearly her on that battlefield. Clearly. It was a strong vision. Strong enough that she shouldn't simply dismiss it out of hand... But why did she see that particular Vyntyr? What was it that made that particular Vyntyr a thing?

She stared at her face, her eyes cruelly tracing every line and discoloration of her face, and those sickly yellow eyes. She closed her eyes suddenly and raised a hand as her mirror cracked, splintering into shards that were held in place by their proximity. At least now the mirror showed an accurate picture; fractured and deformed.

Whatever. She stood and dressed, preparing to start her first meditation of the day.

Vyntyr sat and crossed her legs, allowing herself to breathe. She took a deep breath and tried to focus on clearing her mind. She was apparently getting good at meditation, because she was quickly able to erase those harmful thoughts from her mind. She was left clean and clear, seeing through to the important things: Her training, her lifestyle, and her goals. She needed to make herself a powerful initiate to become a padawan, and that journey started today. She breathed again, and began to plan for exactly how she was going to do this. How was she going to proceed?

Suddenly, there was that face again. Clear, flawless skin, brilliantly green eyes. Mockingly green eyes. Vyntyr furrowed her brows in concentration and tried to expel the image, but it was not the easiest thing in the world to clear from your mind. Why was she seeing this? What did it even mean? She was upset, and meditating was not helping. She would continue, though. She'd just started, and maybe she could get a handle on this. Another deep breath. Another attempt to proceed down a useful path. She needed to get started on her real training. She needed to get a grip on something useful today. What would she practice?

Where would she begin? She should probably begin at the beginning. She needed to control her body, so she could improve it. Well, that would be simple enough. She could practice using the Force to augment her muscles. To improve her body to compensate for what she lacked in physical skill. That sounded like a sure plan. Her mind was crystal clear. She wanted to focus on either jump or speed next, and in order to do that, she needed to get a handle on what those powers actually represented; control over yourself. And maybe that would help her with her other problem. Once she learned to master her body, perhaps she could more easily master her mind as well.

Force Control

As she wound down, Vyntyr exhaled softly, allowing herself to return to the physical world. She needed to go to the cafeteria and eat, and then go on to class. She wondered what they would be teaching today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It turns out that their lecture today was on the subject of the family of powers referred to as Control powers. These powers recognized the Force in your own body and allowed you to use it to your own benefit. You could augment muscle, you could control bodily functions, and even absorb and manipulate energy with these abilities, and a practiced Jedi could use these abilities to live for decades longer than a normal member of their species.

Force Control

The three main families of powers that existed under the Control field of Force abilities were tutaminis, curato salva, and altus sopor. They each dealt with a different fundamental aspect of manipulating their Force internally and each had very different functions that combined to allow the Jedi to control almost all aspects of their bodies, including things such as heartbeat, strength, flexibility and the flow of energy within the body. A Jedi was expected to practice Control techniques to master their bodies and the Force within them so that they could better understand the Force without.

The first family, tutaminis, dealt with the control of the flow of energies, and more specifically with the Jedi's absorption of those energies. While a Jedi could absorb all sorts of energy, a very powerful practitioner could absorb concentrated power such as the energy that comprised a blaster bolt or a lightsaber blade. Vyntyr had known about tutaminis. She had even been intent on practicing it in the past, though her other studies got in the way, as she practiced Alter abilities instead of Control. As the master went on, she paid attention, though, as she was about to begin studying the Control powers, and all of this information would give her an advantage.

Tutaminis functioned based on the notion that all energy was related, and that the user could draw heat and electricity into their bodies, transforming it into usable Force energy. It was a marvelous notion, and the fact that it could be done at all was incredible to Vyntyr, not only in the host of possible applications, but in the actual functioning of the power. The fact that the Force could be treated like physical energy meant that it was part, at least in part, of the physical world, and made it almost more real in her eyes. Anything that she learned about the Force made her happy, of course, and learning about its relationship with physical energy certainly put a smile on her face.

Vyntyr continued to listen to the lecture as the master began speaking about the next group of abilities under the Control family of the Force. Curato salva powers represented the control over ones own body and its natural functions. By focusing your energies, one could extend their life by staving off decay, one could heal wounds or even purge the body of toxins. This group of abilities was so important to a Jedi that it was taught at the beginning of the Jedi's introduction to the academy and practiced for the rest of their life. It was this group of powers specifically that allowed Jedi to live for incredible lengths of time, and remain physically fit and able long beyond their years.

Force Control

Curato salva powers included abilities that could maintain your physical body and heal wounds. This included powers such as Force Heal and similar talents. It was viewed as one of the most fundamental building blocks of the Jedi's understanding of the Force, and was taught as the very first step to mastery over yourself and your body and spirit. Vyntyr was suddenly thinking back to that image of herself, free of scars and for all the world a normal looking girl. If she'd been a Jedi then, she might have turned into that woman. But now she would be like this forever. And she had to accept that. There was nothing else to do about it.

Force Control
7

The master went on, discussing the next group of powers that Control encompassed: altus sopor powers. They were a very subtle method of controlling the Force, and focused on controlling the actual Force within you rather than controlling your body through the Force. Using this group of abilities, one could blend into their surroundings and even into the Force itself, becoming invisible to both physical eyes and anyone trying to find you through the Force. This was taught that the students might learn to keep themselves hidden when necessary, and also to conceal their presence that they might not be so open and raw to the world.

Altus sopor powers sounded interesting, and there were definitely uses for them. Sometimes, a Force user's connection to the very same Force that their opponent was using made their intentions and movements clear and predictable. Using this group of Control abilities could keep those movements and intentions hidden from those that the Jedi did not want to know them. But Vyntyr was still thinking about curato salva powers, and was wondering just how potent they could become. If one could heal damage that had long since occurred, or if... No. She didn't need to be thinking about that. She had a mission. To learn about Control powers, and that is what they were doing now.
