Best: Pent. Easily the best prepromote I've ever used. There's every chance that his base stats will destroy even a good Erk or Nino of the same level (well, maybe not Nino, but she's too much trouble to train to be worth it in my book). And yeah, his growths suck, but his base stats are so good he hardly needs them anyway until the last couple of chapters (and even then, you have a ton of stat boosters). He also has an A-rank in staves, incredibly useful for using Physics or warping, if you need a backup staff user.
Worst: I originally said Ewan, but then I noticed the rule that said their starting class had to be a Mage. So, uh... let's go with FE9 Bastian. I like him as a character, but mechanically, he's bad. He's similar to Calill, but she joins a lot earlier at a lower level. The only thing he has going for him is durability. His lack of speed and 6 movement hurts him bad, he has knives (thus destroying any utility he might have had as a healer), and Corrosion is a useless skill. He can at least wield siege tomes well, but so can all your other Sages.

Best: Levin-fathered-Arthur.
What makes this awesome is pretty straightforward and established: perfect Holsety availability in Gen 2 coupled with a horse.
However, I pick this as my best with tremendous hesitation. Because pairing up Tiltyu and Levin requires going out of your way to do so and isn't particularly pragmatic. The results faaaaaaar outweigh the effort, sure, but I think the effort you have to put in to get this kid at all should be acknowledged. Pent comes no matter what you do.
Worst: Ewan.
I'm just going to assume he counts for this category. At least Nino has 5 move and a C rank in tomes. In addition to only being 5 levels away from a 10/-- promotion for 6 move and a spare healer if you really want her to do something without going through the trouble of raising her normally.

Best: Obviously I have to vote for Levin!Arthur. I don't think I need to explain how extremely OP Holsety is in FE4. lol So I'll just leave it at that~
Worst: Hmmm.... Decisions Decisions... It really boils down to either Nino or Ewan here. I'll have to give this to Ewan in the end. You do get Ewan like around chapter 12 so you have like 10 chapters with him including end game. Nino joins you on chapter 26 and you also have somewhere about 10 chapters to use her, if you include the gaiden chapter in hector's mode.(Though, Kishuna's magic seal poses a bit of a problem...)
So yeah, their availability is really about the same there. But I've been thinking about this for awhile now and I changed my mind about Nino being the worst. She can become a very good Sage if you put in the effort. Her bases are fine even if she is only a level 5 mage. A C in tomes isn't too bad either. But in all honestly I If you decide to abuse her stave rank to an A she'll actually do a pretty good job as a healer. Ewan actually does have the potential to become a fantastic Mage, Sage, Mage Knight unit too, but it does require much more babying for it to happen. Nino also does require babying too but it's not nearly as tedious. ( Still love Ewan as a Druid though!)

Best: Arthur
I was honestly thinking Arthur regardless of who his father is. I had AzelxTiltyu and Arthur's decimating things outrageously well. Pent deserves note, I think, and he serves as a "******** you" to people who think all prepromotes suck.
Worst: Ewan
He's an est that doesn't really have the potential Ests normally have. Granted, it is really easy to level up the recruits in FE8, so I never have a problem using them, but Ewan's definitely the most frustrating one. Nino is certainly not worst by any means; she literally has a gaiden chapter right after you recruit her that was practically made around getting her levels. How many Ests get that? Plus, getting to start with an Elfire? The girl's got game, she'll be fine.

He's one of the best units in 7. Pent starts with A rank in both anima and staff. That alone should make you think to use him. His bases are great. He already has an A support with Louise who's not bad either. The only thing wrong I can think of is the desert chapter where you first see him if he gets too many kills it will prevent you from getting that gaiden chapter.

Best: Asvel. I know I am going to get a lot of weird looks for not picking Levin!Arthur, but Arthur requires so much turns to obtain, is in a game where every other character has a holy weapon, and Fury and Levin were made for each other, and the turn count agrees. Where Asvel- the only magic user you'll be getting for awhile comes pretty much free, in a difficult part of the game AND is in the harder game where wind magic means all the more. His tome is arguably the best tome in the game in terms of availability (sorry Sety, love you n' all, but only four chapters of Holsexy?), and him promoting means he'll be able to abuse staves. Lastly, looking at the bosses, who for the most part have horrid MAG ratings (who's the only magic user until Olwen, again?) Asvel's wind magic really helps tear through the +30 AVD and +10 DEF they gain. So while Levin!Arthur is basically god on a horse, it isn't exactly a rare concept in FE4, while in FE5, you'll be lucky to even run into God, and his name is Asvel.
Worst: Miranda. By doing so, you're missing out on a warp staff, going through the boringest chapter in the game (as opposed to the best chapter on the other route), missing out on Misha, an emergency flyer unit, and are recruiting the worst Est archetype ever, in a game where she'll die in one hit from the lol enemies. Seriously, FE5, you're giving me a LV.5 Mage near the end of the game with a C in fire magic?

Actually, retrospectively, I totally agree with Leaf about Miranda. Ewan is awful, but so is Miranda. Totally forgot how bad she is.
Onto this week though,
Best: Anna
Fo' sho' ho'! What other thief type in the games instantly comes with staff utility (I suppose Tina sort of fits that description but she's the reverse, a staff user with thief utility)? But seriously, her survivability is awesome thanks to her outrageously high speed and luck (once she hits level 5 she's nigh untouchable in-game on Hard Mode and lower), her mobility is awesome, the boosts she gives in Pair Up are especially awesome (Speed, Magic, and Movement?: fantastic boosts for a magical unit), AND she's good at combat. She's REALLY good at it if you have a Levin Sword around or two, and there's no better candidate for using them. All this and she doesn't even need to be promoted. So her stats are boss when she joins if you recruit her as soon as the chapter is available. I've used Anna numerous times and for the draft, and totally vouch for her. With such versatility and so much in her favor, you can basically always find something for her to do to make her useful. How many thieves is that actually true of? Trickster is probably my favorite new class. Thief AND Staff utility rolled together is just awesome, and Anna is the embodiment of how effective it can be.
Worst:
This one's harder. For the time being, I'm going with Rickard, but it could definitely change.

Best: Those are some compelling arguments for Anna, actually, and I don't want to upset the RNG goddess by not voting for her. You get her fairly early on, with the same utilities of other thieves, but with staves to use and the stats to back herself up. Good on ya, gurl.
Worst: I'm actually going to go with Cath, simply because of how annoying it is to recruit her and by the time you get her, even at the earliest, she's way too underleveled and fragile compared to Astol or Chad if you've been raising a thief. Rikard is also very bad... but an easy face to duct tape onto your army. (Although it's weird that you can use a thief to recruit another thief, and you only ever need 1, and we all know it's going to Julian unless you're feeling experimental because Julian is Julian.)
But yeah, having to talk to Cath for three chapters before she gets the memo... all the while, having to compete with her in getting the treasure... Cath, learn to Fire Emblem. When you get talked to, you join that person's side. Geeze.

There is one thing I want to mention is that I think Awakening has made the Theif class much more usable than in past games. Actually I think this is the first game where it hard to call anyone bad. Even Frederick, who will fall behind a bit to everyone else, isn't bad.

Best: Lara. Take two on this, only this time I'm NOT going to vouch for the level gaining she gets, rather her utility. Unlike any other Thief who existed outside the series, Lara gets a special ability later on, that is having the ability to dance AND keep her Thieving abilities. By having the ability to pick locks, steal lighter stuff from enemies (wind magic!), possible movement gains from FE5's levelling system, and dance when she's not doing anything productive, she is suddenly next in line to the most useful utility unit in FE5, besides the unambiguously unbeatable staff users. Granted, her base endurance is something comparable to wet paper, 20% growth in DEF is actually quite good in terms of DEF growth in FE5, along with her high SPD and SKL growths that will help her dodge ballista in later chapters, and her support bonus with Pahn, who is by no means a bad ThiefFighter.
Worst: FE12!Ricardo. Just sort of chillin' in the middle of heavy enemy fire, and having to send a recently recruited, low levelled Julian right in the midst of it, WHILE there is an angry Paladin in his range. Now do that on Lunatic mode, not cool. I will grant he probably has one of my favourite recruitment scenes though.
Also, my pick for Pegasus Knights: (not really a fan of Archers or Dark Magic users, so I don't know who to choose yet, but NOT George, because auto Partia access is definitely worth mentioning.) Best: FE11!Sheeda. While Paola in FE3!B2 has access to the Iote Shield on the level she appears in, AND is the sexiest ever, enemy bow users aren't so much so a threat to a level 10 Pegasus Knight who murders promotes with ease anyway. Meanwhile, in FE11, seeing as like 80% of the enemies are on horseback, Sheeda automatically gets the advantage of wrecking things with ease. Not to mention, FE3!B2 has to deal with dismounting, while FE11 doesn't which means Sheeda is Sheeda all day, ery day, 24/7, while Paola can only be Paola in certain chapters, the final segment of the game included.
Worst: Est Continuing on...

Best Thief eh? I'm gonna be a bit biased here.
Best: Colm. I LOVE Colm. I realize that Gaius, Volke, and Anna could be better, but this is my personal bias speaking so I apologize in advance. Regardless though, Colm is one of the easier thieves in the series to use. With a passable Strength growth, great speed, skill, luck, and an okay hp growth, he can tank that unlucky hit you're going to get, and dish out some good damage in return. I despise the Rogue class in FE8(I personally dislike pure utility, I like combat ready things myself), so I always made Colm into an Assassin. Which he made great use of, getting access to Shamshirs, which made him into quite the terror against even late game enemies. He's always made my final game team, and should not be overlooked simply because of his base class. Besides, his supports with Neimi are sweet so again personal bias.
Worst: CATH. Full stop. Talking to her three times in three different chapters when you have a LOT of other things to do is not fun. Besides! You have two other thieves who are infinitely better. Chad, who you have for longer, and Astohl, who is just awesome. Seriously Cath, if you maybe came a bit earlier, or were a bit easier to recruit...you honestly don't have much use with Chad around.

Going to make it short since I have errands to deal with at the moment.
Best: Anna. What Rath and FD are saying.
Worst: Have to go with FE9!Sothe. Having a level 1 thief who can't make some damage half-way through the storyplot isn't worth it. Heck, even using Volke who quickly changed into an assassin can do better than him.
