"Right, life and death, and monsters, but sometimes you've just got to stop and sniff the gazanias, you know?" He joked. He couldn't help himself. He'd be making quips and eyeing ladycats straight to his grave; it was far better than acknowledging exactly how much he was putting his hide on the line.

Hel gave the hyena a toothy grin before turning to watch the leopards as they seemed to almost magically appear throughout the trees. If it weren't for the threats, he'd almost be impressed. Instead, he was a little concerned, until...

"It's nice to know my efforts are appreciated," he purred smugly.

Otherwise, he continued to rest on his laurels, extending one claw and idly drawing in the dirt. He didn't really have any say in the group; more of a nosy onlooker who'd decided to let the bones fall where they may. As such, he didn't bother voicing his opinion in their negotiations. It seemed the more level headed of the group were winning out thus far, and that was just fine by him.

The hyena was concerned. Briefly, she wondered if she should distance herself from Hel, yet at the same time she was unsure of who to gather nearest to. She didn't trust anyone in this group as far as she could throw them, but they were in this together. What to do, what to do. So many leopards were appearing out of the underbrush. Where there even more? She could fight with the best of them if need be, but they were out of their elements in this terrain and the leopards were making that painfully obvious.

"They speak the truth. We mean no harm. We're here for the monster, nothing more, nothing less. Should the beast be harming your coalition, we could benefit from one another on the hunt for it. Your jungle is monster-less and no one else needlessly has to die."

Amali was nervous when a fair number of leopards appeared all at once, though he was momentarily distracted by the monkey's apparent attachment to the blue leopard that had demanded his release. He was happy with his decision seeing that, and when Krin offered her name and an opportunity to make their case, he even dared to smile at her. There was mostly silence around him now that he was addressed but a few offered their own explanations and questions- and he was pretty sure he heard another angry threat shouted at him.

"Amali," he said, deciding to start with his own introduction though it was a bit too delayed to be terribly obvious, "I'm sorry about your friend, I didn't mean to harm him. You must understand why we're a little jumpy at such a strange ambush, knowing how much death has been around here lately."

It seemed a better choice to apologize than to state again they were searching for the monster. He didn't have anything else to say about the monster, he said pretty much everything he knew about it. A pointless repetition couldn't possibly be helpful.

The silver leopard seemed to consider the questions being thrown at her, but was far more interested in what Amali had to say. Apparently it was acceptable, because she nodded her head and most of the other leopards seemed to relax. For the most part. She let the last few shouts trickle out, before her own steady monotone continued: "The monkey is named Ngedere. He's never been right in the head, even for his own kind. This wood used to be home to many like him, but they've all moved on now and left him behind."

As if to console him, the blue leopard gently patted the old fellow. Ngedere's hands were tangled in his fur, resembling something a child might do. Occasionally he mumbled strange words without meaning, his wide eyes glassy.

The blue leopard continued: "He started painting things red a few months ago. But he has nothing to do with this monster, or whatever you call it."

An blinked, a thought passing through her. "Could he have seen the monster? We thought the monster was using the red to track. Is the monkey trying to warn people?"

Krin seemed disinterested. "Perhaps."

"Don't you care that some...thing is living in your forest, killing creatures without regard?"

To this, the leopard stood up. "The monster has never attacked any of us in the trees. I do not deny animals have gone missing, but I have never seen this 'monster'. Perhaps it is retribution for something your kind has done outside the wood."

"...landwalker..." the old monkey suddenly mumbled. It was sharp enough for those near to hear.

An blinked. "Are you saying its a thing that walks on the ground? Not in the trees?"

The monkey clutched his friend tighter. "...he is so angry..."

He? Margulis leaned in close, her eyes focusing on the little monkey hidden beside the leopard now. "You saw it didn't you Ngedere, you saw it doing something awful?" she asked softly, her voice betraying an almost maternal concern. She held no grudges against any species, and if this little monkey had seen something traumatizing there was no sense in holding his misguided actions against him.

"We want to make him calm Ngedere," she added, "We want to erase the anger so that he can't do anything bad anymore. Can you tell us what you saw? Please?" Her voice was tight, they needed this information if they were going to have any chance of finding this creature and getting out of the woods safely. She knew the leopards had no desire to be their allies in their endeavors and that was alright, they had their own ways.

There was an expression in the temple about the progression of negative emotion and how it escalates that occurred to Sandor when the green lioness began mollycoddling the monkey who had been so annoying to everyone moments ago. Sandor was still irritated about the slap and the handprint, even though with effort he was moving past it. He had not been hurt, just annoyed, and the perpetrator was reputedly not right in the head.

"Actually we want to kill him," he rasped helpfully. "So, you know. Same outcome. He stops committing atrocities. We can show you the head later, if you want."

He grinned. On his scarred face the expression was probably pretty atrocious in and of itself.

Margulis turned to look at Sandor curiously, though she held her tongue at his remarks. Fair enough she was stretching the truth, but she still hoped there would be some way to resolve this issue without resorting to such crude methods as beheading. And in the state the little monkey was in she didn't think it helped much for him to be envisioning such things.

His grin almost made her laugh, the scarred marks on his face blending into a distorted image in her flawed vision. She didn't like him, at least she felt no particular affinity toward him, but she could respect where he was coming from on the issue.

"Yes," she added, "We will kill him if it comes to that but you'll be safe Ngedere, just tell us what you saw." Even if he didn't remember the details any sort of vague description was far more useful than the big pile of nothing they had at the moment. He might remember if it walked on four legs or otherwise, how big it was, anything. But even if he remembered there was no guarantee he'd be willing to tell them while he was this terrified.

Out of ideas she turned to the rest of the group, her expression inquisitive. An had been on the same track, with the warnings, maybe the others had drawn similar conclusions. There had seemed to be many sensible voices among them, and many minds could surely coax something out of this one fragile creature.

Finally Kimaji decided to work out a way to more easily transport her root and feather; tangling it up in her necklace. It felt a little silly, but worked well enough for now! Frankly, she was kind of tired of just carrying it around in her mouth like that, and not being able to talk.

Kimaji frowned, still feeling rather bad for the poor monkey. He seemed so upset! He was probably rather overwhelmed with the situation. The cub listened to the exchanges between the group she was a part of and the group of leopards, but mostly just looked at Ngedere. "Who is angry?" She asked, gently, and took a couple more steps towards the leopards, so she could hear the monkey a bit better. Hopefully it wouldn't gain a bad reaction from the leopards, who seemed not to love them very much. At least Kimaji certainly didn't look threatening. "Maybe the monster doesn't like the red stuff." She theorized aloud. Perhaps Ngedere was trying to make a safe place, and protect people with the paint. Or something! "Is that right, Ngedere?" She didn't want to ask too much of the primate, though. And one of the lionesses in the group, a green one, was probably doing a better job at asking smart questions.

-

This was all turning into a rather twisty story. If the monster apparently walked on land and didn't go up in the trees after the leopards, why did he attack from above? It must be a rather large creature to do so without the help of trees, and for a moment he theorized it could be some enraged elephant. But... well, that remained to be seen. There weren't really elephants walking about the Motoujamii desert, and Moto'spaki's experience with them was extremely limited. He had never seen the kind of damage they could do to a lion's body, but the white lion had gotten close enough to realize they were very big, with the only exception being the newborn calves. Their size should also mean that there should be tracks. He couldn't imagine they were at all graceful in the woods.

But who knew, really? Certainly not he. And they were here to get to the bottom of this, after all. He continued to watch and listen as he pondered, occasionally glancing at their surroundings to make sure they weren't surprised by anything.

So the monkey had seen their wayward murderer. Or he said he did, anyway. Tahir did not put much trust in the befuddled primate’s recollections. But he was clearly under the impression that this… thing was an individual. A ‘he’, which meant it was not as troupe of baboons as Tahir had hoped. Even a madman could get numbers right, couldn’t they?

“What one being could be so large and powerful as to annihilate so many lions? At once.” Nothing that could walk in the jungle should be that strong. Tahir frowned, brow furrowed. “Is the monkey positive it was only one creature? Could the murderer not have allies it doesn’t know about?”

Clearly, Tahir did not have much respect for primates. It indeed.

Hel made a face.

"Ewww, the head? But that's so messy. And you know, it only takes a few days for the eyeballs to go and they get all drippy and the smell..."

He continued to ramble on to no one in particular for a few moments. He liked his kills fresh, thank you, even if it was wholly impractical. A lion had to have his faults, right?

"Why can't it just be, you know, a lock of it's hair? Assuming it has hair. Maybe it's a crocodile. Or a hippo. Maybe it's a hippo who got really lost and decided to take it out on everyone else."

He finally shut his mouth, teeth clicking together audibly. All this talk of actually fighting the creature had the sassy and ultimately cowardly lion fidgeting uncomfortably. Okay, okay, so he sort of knew this was going to happen, and he knew this was a hunt and not just, you know, an inquiry. But surely they should observe it first. Yeah. From very far away. Like, really far away. After all, hadn't it eaten a whole PRIDE of lions? Why had he thought tagging along would be a good idea?

"D'ya think...er, that is. Will it eat all of us at once, or do you think it'll save some for later?" He swallowed dryly, and glanced to the leopards like a drowning...lion. "I don't suppose you could give us a complimentary lesson in tree climbing?"

Ngedere offered some insight and suddenly everybody had questions.. all way better questions than Amali could come up with now. He was thinking about how this monster didn't harm things in the trees. Could it not get into the trees at all or was it simply too inconvenient? A hippo would be stuck on the ground, a lion inconvenienced by the trees.. but it was somehow more unnerving to imagine this monster as a real creature, even if something imaginary would be harder to deal with.

Amali had nothing to contribute so he pondered the red substance, glancing around to the few faces with red handprints on them.. and his own legs and chest, which had picked some up from pinning the monkey.

He looked around and stepped back to be nearer Endesha again.

"What do you think?"

Lani’s grey eyes softened at the sight of the monkey. So distraught! Lani had been frightened like that many times, and watching the dear old thing cling to the leopard like a pup near broke her little heart. She very rarely had sympathy for animals other than her own species, but this would melt a stone! She crooned softly under her breath and tiptoed a few cautious steps closer.

Not too many, though. She didn’t really want to be near those leopards.

Why is it so angry, Mister Ngedere?” asked Lani, her head cocked,” Has someone done something to it? Is it hurt?” A hurt animal was the worst sort. There were desperate and dangerous. Best to be avoided, especially if said animal was larger and stronger than one’s self. But she could understand all this carnage if it was an injured or sickly creature doing it.

When Hel mentioned the eating of others, Lani yipped and darted back into the group, scrambling for Ndege She peeked over the backs of the other dogs and whimpered,” I hope it won’t be eating anyone.” Although a lesson in tree climbing did sound mighty fine.

"No way in hell I could tree climb."

The hyena gave an exasperated sigh. She felt bad for the monkey and she worried. Ngedere was obviously frightened by the creature and it made Mapenzi uncomfortable. She had an all around bad feeling about the way things would go and inched nearer to the group. Though she distrusted them, there was safety in numbers and she may have to rely on them in the future, especially if fighting became involved. Lions were larger in body and strength, that was no secret. She could sure do damage to one with her jaws, which were like steel traps, but she could be out muscled. She needed them for their strength.

"But there are many of us and only one monster that we know of. We could take it out in a group. Together, we are strong," She tried to sound optimistic.

Pam’s gaze softened as he eyed the pitiful monkey but he did not like the leopard’s reply. Simply saying the monkey was crazy was hardly the answer he’d expected as it sounded based more in their own ignorance of the monkey’s motives than anything else. But the blue leopard seemed to truly care about the odd little creature and Pam decided not to say anything. Someone was suggesting that the strange substance might be a form of protection from the beast and considering the blue leopard also shared the same red palm mark, he supposed that theory made some sense. Pam was forced to look at the monkey in a different light.

“He? Does the monster speak?” Pam asked quietly more to himself than anyone else. At this point he had already decided to ignore anything the dark lion said though he did sigh quietly every time the other opened his mouth. If they were both alive at the end of the day, Pam would most likely try to have a word with him in particular though he doubted that would do much good.

The arrival of a couple of leopards made Ruyken pause in his stalking of the unfortunate monkey, amber eyes narrowing as he studied the pair. The blue male he wrote of instantly, but the silver female made his fur prickle along his neck, tail stiffening. Realising the monkey had been released the red leopard growled irritably, furious that his target had gotten away. Bearing his fangs at the lion responsible he pushed bast the milling rogues and jumped up into a low hanging branch, already at the end of his very short fuse with the whole affair. Why the hell Sandor wanted to stay was beyond him and now he himself had gotten mixed up in this circus act.. it was enough to make even a sane leopard loose his mind, and no one had ever accused Ruyken of being sane.

Souzan stayed close to the other firekin, as the monkey was interrogated and several of the rogues started making threats. He kept his gaze on the red leopard though, sensing the male could very well be trouble. He certainly looked angry enough. When the red leopard stopped his advance Souzan felt relief sweep through him. He hadn't really wanted to start a fight in the middle of the gathering while in the forest home of a potential monster. Turning his attention to the leopards he was surprised when the monkey ran straight to them, but couldn't help the faint chuckle that escaped. Their tormenter looked so tiny and vulnerable wrapped around the blue male. Souzan found he couldn't really hold a grudge against the little trickster when he looked like that.

"Just hope Im not that crazy when I get old." he mumbled to himself, shaking his head. Suddenly the conversation turned back to the topic of their monster and Souzan quieted again, listening intently. "Does the monkey know where the monster is, or what it is?" He asked, raising his voice a little to be heard over the rest of them.
