When choas has broken out, Norvie had done the smartest thing he could think of.

He had fallen back to hide behind a particularly large bolder and wait for the screaming to quiet down. He wasn't sure what they were supposed to be up to when it came to Defenders. Who was he kidding? He wasn't Defenders type, really, but Moira had wanted to go and he had just hoped it would give him a chance to get to know her better, the opportunity to bring up the courage to show her his private chemestry set and collection of torque-drivers.... but he hadn't expected it to lead somewhere that meant people would get...

serious.

Deathly serious.

He gave an anxious noise in his throat, nose twitching anxiously as he peered around his stone barricade., He spotted the Reaper addressing the remaining crowd of his peers and ducked down again until the hiss of discussion followed.

Swallowing deeply, he spotted the zombie in question freed from a net, his stomach clenching.

Well... the fighting seemed to have stopped. That... meant the coast was clear, right? The rat-creature edged forward, finally darting forward to timidly hover beside Moira, checking her from head-crab to toe in what he prayed was a subtle motion and not a look of terrified worry. "While everyone's distracted, we could probably make a run for it," He hissed, "There's got to be a back way or... or some route they won't notice, it's got him distracted-"

A valiant hero he was not. But maybe he could still drag the girl to safety.

Selene peeked up from her hiding place just in time to see Malcolm close by, and her head whipped up as she realized it was him. Both of her hands reached out, fingers clenching repeatedly in a grabbing motion. "Ohhh, Malcolm," She sobbed. "I am so glad to see you safe. I was so worried, I still am so worried!"

Arcana lifted her up into Malcolm's arms, which she didn't expect, and she clung to Malcolm greedily, her hands clutching his shirt and wrinkling it with distress.

"We are in so much trouble, Malcolm. Please don't let them hurt me. Please don't let them hurt - Arcie!"

Selene's voice cracked just slightly when she realized Arcana was moving closer to the reaper, and she squirmed in Malcolm's arms. "No, no don't let him, Malcolm don't let him-"

The nets were gone. Tarot blinked and stared with wonder. They…were…

The figure was back. Her brows furrowed and she gripped Westhor’s hand. The reaper’s free hand slowly reached for the sword strapped to her back, ready to pull it out at a moment’s notice, but the figure did not attack. He only spoke. Tarot’s eyes narrowed as she tried to take in his story. Her first instinct was to accept his demand, but she wasn’t completely sure. She turned toward her brother when he voiced similar sentiments. “I agree, but...you said the students at the forest stopped moving and then disappeared?” Her lips pressed together and she reached out to squeeze Arcana’s shoulder. “We won’t end up like them, okay. I’ll make sure of it.”

She looked at Westhor, then Arcana, Selene, Akithor and Macthor as well. Tarot didn’t want to see any of them disappear. If they had to leave this cave forever? She wouldn’t mind. “If we can end this peacefully while we still can, then I think we should take it.”

Tarot turned toward Selene. "I won't let them harm any of you," she murmured quietly in a protective tone.

"It's still too soon for me to die," He replied with his usual poker face, frowning slightly when Selene was handed over, although he didn't protest - just wordlessly shifted the way he was holding onto his staff so that he could properly carry the ghoul. He then watched silently as Arcana walked up to the strange reaper; that seemed like a bad move, but who was he to stop him?

"Stop your Jacking whining," He muttered at Selene, "If you don't intend to do anything to help in this situation, don't say anything, and just watch... Unless you have a plan to make Arcana stand down that does not involve begging and whining even more." He was too worn out by the nets from earlier to take so much whining; it was actually giving him a headache... All that squirming and whining... If it wasn't because he respected Arcana's guts for standing up to the strange reaper for the sake for his friends, he might had dropped Selene by now. She wasn't made of glass. She wouldn't shatter.

Ughh, those Jacking nets...

That stupid Westhor's whining was starting to get to him too... Even if it wasn't showing on his face.

Selene's hands fell like stones when Malcolm scolded her, and she retreated further into herself, refusing to look up at him. He was right, of course, but she already knew she would never be enough to protect Arcana. That was why she'd asked for him to..

But she had no right, she supposed. So she hid her face in her hands, and succumbed to the hopelessness that Malcolm's words confirmed.

All she could do was watch. Useless. As usual.

She sniffed quietly, and pushed her hands aside, her eyes lifting to rest up on Arcana. She would force herself to watch, and always know that it was she who failed.

All eyes were focused on him now, the Reaper that wavered between truth and lies. All eyes buried into him and unearthed him for his flaws with their own insecurities with their own doubts. This Reaper could have killed them, he already displayed power. He offered power. He offered security, he asked small, almost inconsequential tokens in return. What exactly, really was he playing at?

And all eyes were focused on him again as the voices ringing in the cave fell silent. "You ask me questions and yet, turn them down as lies." They took a few steps back, turning their back towards the students. If there was any other time to strike, it would have been now, as he spoke, weaponless, unguarded.

"Choices. Your choices are reasonable as I am a professor of sorts myself. All professors hold a very specific ability: that of disclosing knowledge, information. How much knowledge is too much knowledge? When does learning turn against you and make you question more than you should, doubt the system entirely, and contradict everything you once knew? I do not think I am not unreasonable. You can walk out right now. Leave this cave, you are not heroes, each of you have a purpose, a meaning. You are graduating tomorrow, are you not? It would be a pity to end your hopes before they began, and I am not nearly that cruel. Leave what you saw here, and leave the cave, the exit is simply behind you. Choices are always yours to make."

And that was it. They could leave. They did not have to be a hero, or a Defender, they did not have to confront their own insecurities and fears. They were free to go. Indeed the tunnel behind them was unblocked. They could grab what they needed, their friends, peers, classmates, lovers and live out that dream.

"I hear it in your voices, you are still young after all." They took a step further, a little further away, however just as equally exposed. Never once did they turn around, never once did they take the offensive. They were showing kindness, perhaps. "But what lesson have you learned here? Is it not about choices? Those that came to the forest went willingly, they slept only a little longer, but I do not lie. They will obtain power as they have never seen before, for some more than others. I offered them the chance to change their lives with their permission."

And as the finally came to a stop at the foot of the pool of water, they turned around, at last, one hand raised-

- To pull off their hood. Gone was the deception and mystery, leaving a very ordinary-looking Reaper behind. An older reaper, with a clean, slightly ragged face. Simple light-blue eyes, an honest, slightly-serious reflection, pensive and genial. They could have been anyone, a family member, a friend, anyone else. It was almost anti-climatic. "It is easy to call someone the perpetrator, the bad guy, when they remain distant and unfamiliar. I understand this sentiment, and I apologize, time has not been generous to me these past few days. But I your concerns are valid, and I respect them. I promise no hiding between us, no lies, no resentment, in hopes that you will return the same sentiment."

The students could have attacked. Why didn't they? Was it the odd ambiance of the cave, the apprehension, or really, their own fears and insecurities. Was it because they did not know what they simply wanted, that someone threw a wrench into their ordinary lives and they could no longer fully understand? There was no greater fear than fearing the unknown.

Did they fear themselves?

Any of the students could have attacked. Any one of them could have struck out when his back was turned, and any one of them could have now. Why didn't they?

Was it because-

- because

- they were

- who was?

- Something important but - what was it?

OOC

BREAKING OUT : REDUX

- And then the odd familiarity again, that strange sense of disjointedness, as if a thick fog was clouding each student's brain. Important thoughts simply stilled to a stop, even their bodies threatened to slowly shut down. It felt okay... it was alright right? The words made.... sense. They were....

TO ESCAPE:

- Roll a 6-sided dice. If odd, you break away from that sense of nothingness, you gain a moment of lucidity, but even that moment threatens to break the second you focus back on that figure. It crawls and curls and threatens to break your defenses, a yearning feeling that promises that everything will be better. At this point you come to a choice. Either you flee, or, you return back to remembering... something as you struggle, as words come to you slowly and sluggishly. Time is running out.

- FLEEING:
Your character can choose to flee. At this moment, carrying exactly ONE stunned other person is about as much as they can do. You were offered a choice you can exit.
- And exit you do, as you run down the cave hallway, fleeing from this nightmare once and for all. You were promised an escape. The end of the tunnel is there and you feel a sense of dread, as if traps will spring around you, as if something is chasing right behind you. The cooler air from the library suddenly greets you. There is nothing around, simply shadows and shapes of the familiar school grounds. You take a few experimental steps. Everything is okay. You are free. Tomorrow, it will be okay. Tomorrow-

- You wake up. ((OOC: YOU HAVE BEEN CAPTURED/ YOUR CHARACTER IS DEAD. ))

Oh the reaper was talking again. He was saying an awful lot of things, and to be honest, Vel was a little surprised to see his face when he removed his hood. Huh. Maybe he really was just letting them go without any trouble.. She felt herself beginning to feel more relaxed. No, it wasn't quite relaxed.

There was something she was trying to think about, but she was having trouble recalling just what that was.

Things were getting hazy. Like she was drifting away.

It was strange how this man continued to talk and Quin's mind began to drift. It was subtle at first as if she were focused on his words trying to soak them in but with each sentence she felt her mind sinking into a deep fog. There was something about his stance, so open and yet she couldn't bring herself to edge forward. Her feet were just as useless as her mind was at the moment. Was what he was saying truly okay? Surely it was he had even revealed his face. That seemed to pull away at some of the mystery. He was even rather plain and ordinary looking. Nothing entirely outstanding about his features but he was just....odd.

And then there was a moment when Red flashed to mind. Defiant to the very end. That imagine had Quin struggling suddenly trying to lift herself out of this dense fog.

Macthor admittedly relaxed a little when the reaper drew back his hood. He looked so...ordinary, so harmless, so human (as most reapers did). However, though he was not as tense as he had been a moment ago, the suspicion had never left his eyes. With his gaze still fixated on the reaper, he lifted his hands and placed them on either of his bros' shoulders. So they were...allowed to leave? Just like that? No catches?

Had that been the case, the thunderbird would have snatched his bros' hands and dragged them to the exit, but something stopped him before he could act. The heaviness descended upon him rather suddenly, the urgency in his mind slowly fading away. Or rather, it was being obscured, lost within the sudden cloudiness that filled his mind.

He sunk to his knees slowly, golden eyes growing hazy as he lifted a hand up to his head (which took a look of effort in and of itself--he felt so groggy). What were...these broken thoughts that were suddenly drifting around in his head? What were they trying to tell him?

Macthor's lips were moving, but no sound was coming from him as he struggled and strained to figure out what exactly this feeling that had descended on him was.

Yes. Yes. It made sense. Perfect sense. Everything was just fine. Wait. Not it wasn't. What was she thinking? Vel tried to remember what she was doing here. Oh right, there was the Reaper ahead. What had just happened to her? She felt.. strange. She still did in a way. There was something that felt incredibly alluring, telling her that everything would be alright. It was almost intoxicating really.

The raptor shook her head, trying to push it aside. This Reaper.. he was casting some sort of spell! That had to be the answer.

She looked to the others, noticing they seemed to be kind of out there as well. Reaching out, she tried to nudge Quin to get her to snap out of it. Well. She was still a little groggy unfortunately. Everything going through her mind felt like it was sloshing through molasses. She was struggling to keep a hold of her thoughts.

After the nets had disappeared just as suddenly as they arrived, Ashly was left standing there, blinking, stunned, before giving the golem ghoul a nod in response to the thank you she received, and moving on towards the tunnel. They didn't seem to get very far before the Reaper was suddenly there, talking, explaining things, pushing back his hood to reveal.

Nothing spectacular, nothing even remotely threatening to judge just from his looks alone. Ashly was beginning to feel like he was right, he was making sense. Her thoughts seemed to dull as she slipped into this new set of mind, her brain feeling dull and foggy. He was right, they should just leave, that would really just be for the best---

---NO!

Ashly shook her head as though trying to get rid of the cobwebs that were clouding her mind. It was easier to think now, and she was able to move, though as she looked around it appeared that nearly everyone else had been stunned into stillness. Indeed, her own thoughts still felt mushy, like if she didn't keep focused she would slip back into whatever she had felt before. She had to stop listening to his words, stop looking at him. He was doing something to them, something to all of them!

No matter what Quin tried the trance she was under had a solid hold. No matter what she did her mind only sank deeper into the abyss. She was trying hard to remember something, it felt so important but it was like a moment where she had misplaced her dorm keys. She knew in what general area they were but couldn't find them. Thus she kept fighting to regain some sort of control, eyes blindly staring at the figure in front of her.

Where his bros went, Akithor would follow. He wasn't going to leave. Then again, there was something to follow in his head, but nothing would come out. Nothing.

Ren had been worried. What had he been worried for? The creeping lethargy wound around him again like the embrace of an old friend. There was still something wrong. But he couldn't seem to think of what it was.

No feeling came to mind; nothing came to mind. That was the trouble. There was something about to happen, something he needed to do. As if playing a puzzle game, he tried deciphering by looking around and -looking-, -checking-...

Gaming had helped the boil again, the blockage in his mind was lifting, he could feel it. The answers were on the tip of his tongue...
