enO- The Howling Tien & Brendall I Now that things were settled with Aaren and the nobles seemed to be under control for the moment this could finally be done. It was late so most in her quarters would be asleep. Enjiron already knew of her plans, so he was settled in his own room again for the next week. Thankfully for her lover this time would be the last time he was evicted from her rooms, for the time being at least.
Tien sat in a throne like chair in the audience room of her quarters, looking down at the one who knelt before her, obedient as a pet dog. It was somewhat disturbing how his attitude changed when faced with her without the buffer of Raven's presence. "You expect me to treat you as she did." It was not a question, she could read as much in his actions and his posture. He knelt like a supplicant, with his gaze glued to the floor in front of her feet. "Look at me."Brendall stayed silent and did not move a muscle until she ordered him to look up. As much as he did not want to admit she was right. Harsh treatment was a conditioned expectation. But was it truly what he wanted? This was the true Eshu before him, not the false witch Lorinia. A fact that was hammered home when she reached up and undid the ties that held on her mask and slid it off. On some level it seemed like sacrilege to see her so exposed and yet he could not bring himself to look away, not unless she commanded it."My offer still stands." And it was in his best interest to take it, considering her Raven would be most disappointed if he did not. "If you still have the courage to take it up."He started to say something, possibly even to protest, but the words died unspoken on his lips. This was a test. A test of his character and response. Perhaps the greatest test Eshu could ever put before him and he was floundering, with no one but himself to blame. There was fear gripping his heart, but the man did his best to ignore it.Trickery smirked when he did not end up speaking. Good. "The first steps is yours, I cannot take what I need to begin.""What must I do?" He barely heard himself speak."Entrust me with all that you are." His puzzled look caused her smirk to widen into a smile. "Search your heart, you will know the answer." She motioned for him to rise and beckoned him forward once he did. Raven had made a fine choice for a mate; Brendall was strong, bright, handsome and had a good head on his shoulders. He just needed these bonds broken so he could truly be himself again and be free.He stared down into his patron goddess' gold and red-orange eyes for what seemed like a very long time. It took him a few moments to figure out exactly what she wanted from him and a few moments more to find it within himself. Faith had always been a strange concept for him, serving the false goddess directly and unable to acknowledge how he truly felt about the true Trickery, Eshu, who looked back at him patient and expecting. Even without saying so aloud in plain language she was asking him to take a leap of faith. There was something in his eyes and she knew he found what he was looking for. "Kiss me. Tell me what you have found in the deepest reaches of yourself. Tell me who you are."His mind was balking at the very idea of it, like touching Eshu might somehow sully her. Still in his heart he knew he needed to do this. So he leaned over and pressed his lips against Eshu's as she asked, whispering in between parted lips the secrets he had found in the deepest reaches of himself. Brendall felt his awareness slipping away and yet he wasn't afraid.Tien reached out to support him as he slumped against her, finding it far easier to do so than it would have been before her change. A piece of herself was chipped off, given back to the man laying in her arms with a new name and purpose. Come back to me, my Coyote. And suddenly his awareness returned in a flood as the air rushed into his lungs. He stared up at Eshu wide eyed and in awe as if he had never seen her before. He had not, at least not like this; it was like the first time he had run into them in the forest except now they were alone. His heart was pounding and Coyote found he could not settle his mind."Shhh..." She brushed his bangs away from his forehead and pressed a kiss there. "There is no danger here now, you are safe with me, Coyote."Coyote? There was moment of confusion readable in his expression but it vanished quickly enough. Yes. That was who he was now. He wanted to reach up and touch her face, to make certain she was real and not a dream, but his body did not want to obey. It surprised him when Eshu reached for his hand herself and brought it to the side of her face. For six more days we will know each other like this. You will need to learn and gain strength again before you can run free.He managed the tiniest nod of his head, but it seems the gesture was understood. It was then she shifted his weight so that she was cradling him against her chest and stood. There seemed to be little choice except to lean into her. And it was strange but he was suddenly tired, so very tired, it was hard to keep his eyes open.Rest now, my Coyote. I will get you to bed and be here when you wake.

owT - Omega Mentality Tien & Brendall II She felt his sudden alarm as he awoke in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar woman beside him. Shhh...you are just fine. The touch her hand on his face seemed to settle her new aoide, leaving him looking up at her with an expression that was part curiosity, part confusion. It is my room, you are safe. No one will bother us here. That seemed to be a satisfactory answer, still he looked away from her long enough to take in their surroundings. Ever vigilant, aren't you?Had to be. His short answer was intentionally accompanied by several memories he would rather not have dredged up. The least violent of which was Lorinia slapping him, her nails biting into the flesh of his face. If Eshu looked close enough the scars were still there, just old and faint now. Had to be, or it cost me. It was why he made sure to pick the best scouts, nothing could afford to slip by them.Tien's fingers traced over the barely there scars, wishing she could rip Lorinia to pieces all over again. And this was a kind punishment. She could feel him struggling not to pull away from her, his eyes were closed in attempt to hide the fear in them from her. What he might not have caught onto yet was that there was no hiding it, not when they were this close. It was a loosing battle and in the end he did end up pulling away, at least as far as his mostly immobile body would allow him to go.The omega, who bears the brunt of stress...You only saw the surface of it. What you saw...that was nothing. I cannot even... He shivered involuntarily.Try. If he could not let it go then he could not begin to heal.It was the tone her mental voice had that made Coyote look up at her- a request, not an order.Tell me - show me - what makes her hold linger, even beyond the grave. Lorinia would never walk the worlds again in any form, she had seen to that herself. What had been done was the same she had had done to Enjiron to Kaylin and to Coyote himself, but the only difference was she had not given the witch anything in return. She was nothing, so nothing she had become.Slowly images trickled out as Coyote tried to detach himself from how they made him feel. These were things no one knew about, not even Kaylin. He had been too ashamed to tell her what the witch had done to him. He crumpled into Eshu's embrace when she put her arms around him.In reality it was more like what hadn't Lorinia done to him - it was abuse in every respect, even a few ways she would not have imagined were possible. It was a miracle had not simply given up as the others guards had and become a puppet. His face was buried against her neck and he was trying not to sob. One memory, one exchange, stood out more than the others...'Why so coy, Brendall?' Her perfect lips turned up in a smile. 'Fighting won't make this any better, except for me maybe.'
He was sure she knew he wasn't playing coy; that it was quite the opposite- he was absolutely disgusted, whether it was more with her or himself in this moment he had no idea. Yet here he was because he felt there was no choice. Refusing would only cause more trouble, keeping the witch content was the only way to keep her safe and by extension to keep all of them safe. There was nothing to do but take off his shirt, accept her kiss and fight down the urge to be sick. His fingers curled into her clothing and the sobs he was holding back came. She knew his deepest secret now and the shame that came with it was as deep as an ocean. And this had happened many times apparently, eventually he let Lorinia think she had won him over and eventually the leash on him had loosened a little bit. Even after all that she did, you did not break. Her hand ran gentle soothing circles over his back. You are stronger than she was. You always have been.It was a while before the sobs quieted. Kaylin...She will never hear of this from me.No, she was why I did not break. He had never told how he felt until the day Lorinia had died, but he had loved her for more half his life. His heart had been set on her since the first time he laid eyes on her and then not long after he had gone to serve the witch. They were separated but his heart never strayed, despite what his body may have been through. You did what you felt you had to do, there is no shame in that. Coyote's thoughts said he clearly disagreed but he did not bother to 'voice' the fact. That pain is past, as are the circumstances that caused it. Let it remain there, don't let it sully your future. She continued to rub his back until he dozed again. The first, and hopefully the worst, hurdle was over with.

eerhT - Placebo Tien & Brendall III Coyote slept soundly, curled in beside her like a young pup with his mother. He seemed a good deal more relaxed after yesterday's confession, which was indeed a good start. His dreams were far less troubled than they had been- a good deal of them were filled with Kaylin in fact. He missed her terribly and that much was understandable; since the pair arrived here from Aejiss they had not been separated until Kaylin had come to her and become Raven. She was the love of his life, though he had not told her so in those exact words. He reached out and curled an arm around Eshu's narrow waist in his sleep, cuddling closer to her. Coyote had grown used to sleeping next to Kaylin every night, so it had quickly become habit to hold her as they both slept. If he woke and realized what he was doing to Trickery now the man would likely be horrified at the thought.Truth be told she did not mind what he was doing. In a way it was a comfort for them both. He slept best when he knew he was holding Kaylin safely in his arms and she was used to sleeping tangled up with Enjiron. Her poor mate was probably tired of being kicked from her room, but this would be the last time for a long while at least. She reached over and brushed Coyote's hair away from his face. The days still to come would change him, reforge the bits of himself that had been damaged by serving the witch all those years. Free him from doubt and the old fears that clung to him. He needed to be as much himself as he could be, if he was to stand by Kaylin's side as her equal and her protector- much like Enjiron was for her.In his sleep he did not think it odd that 'Kaylin' lay on her back rather than on her side as she usually would have. He just buried his face against the spot where her neck and shoulder met- taking in the scent of her skin and hair. That was the trigger that caused him to wake- it was not Kaylin's scent, but it was not the witch's either. It was that of a strange flower, though for the life of them he could not put a name to it if he tried. Waking took far longer than he would have liked, but he was still thoroughly exhausted. She slid an arm around him in turn when he nestled even closer and looked down at him when his face turned up enough for him to see her. "Yes?" The first signs of wakefulness had been easy to feel- his muscles tensing and his thoughts became more focused even though they were still groggy like one might be after a night of drinking far too much. She only spoke to remind him of the fact that they were separate and that she was not some phantom conjured by his imagination. The haze on his mind gradually cleared. Eshu...Tien... The rational part of his mind said this was inappropriate, that he should pull away now, but the rest was content to stay here laying nestled in her arms. His eyes went a little wide when her arm tightened slightly around him, seemingly intent on keeping him close to her. Why?Comfort. A placebo for what they both wanted but could not have in this moment. She kissed his forehead and his eyes closed, face going back to its previous spot at the base of her throat. They both knew he would not be naughty because despite how much he loved her as his goddess, she was not his to love like that. Still it was nice to be close, to hold someone and be held in turn. His fingertips found the flesh of her hip accidentally and he was grateful she would not be able to see the blush that rose on his cheeks. His hand retreated immediately, smoothing the fabric of her shirt back down before he replaced his hand where it was on top of it. You smell like flowers. The attempt at conversation would hopefully distract her from the awkward thoughts that flashed into his mind.Jadenira. Or so Enjiron said anyway. It is a flower that grows wild on Eshurian. They only bloom when the light and temperature are perfect, if it changes afterward they close up again. They were tricksy little flowers and among her favorites. There were some out in the garden that he would be able to see once he felt up to walking again.Tomorrow, maybe. Even if his body would let him he had no want to move right now. He had a bit more strength back but moving as little as he had to get close her took far more out of him than he would have cared to admit- but Eshu knew even without him saying so. Being weak as a babe was very strange to him. There are four more days yet, so rest and do not worry yourself over it. She kissed his hair and sighed contentedly. Think of it this way, if it helps. I gave you life like I would any child. You may be physically grown, but in almost every other way you are newborn. In some ways he was still Brendall, but in other ways he was Coyote - a being forever irrevocably tied to her. She was his goddess, his mother. Her relationship with each of her aoidei was very different, she became what each of them needed to continue to grow and thrive. For Coyote that was the mother he had been deprived of in his youth- it gave him something to fill that hole, in a similar fashion to the way Kevin had become like a father to him.Mother... He might not call her such after this week was over, but deep down in his heart he would know it. They both would.Go back to sleep, Coyote. I know you are still tired. They could start working on other things tomorrow. I will be here when you wake, I promise. He had a mind to argue, like a tired child fighting sleep but it seemed his body did not want to let him do that much. Before long he was asleep in her arms, head full of quiet, peaceful dreams. He did not so much as stir when she wrapped her other arm around him. Tomorrow's challenges would be faced head on when the time came.

ruoF - Up On Your Paws Tien & Brendall IV If Coyote was to be free of her on time he would have to get up and start moving around, even if today was just walking around. He also needed a bath and she had to get more food into him, neither of them had eaten much the last few days since they had spent most of it sleeping. Coyote. A mental nudge accompanied the voice and she frowned when he stirred and grumbled a bit but ultimately ignored her. She tried again and he still ignored her. Well, he left her no choice...
Tien leaned down and whispered in his ear, doing her best to mimic Raven's voice. Brenny darling... A bit cruel, perhaps. But she had proven to be his best motivator thus far. He had said it himself even. That got him moving, one eye cracked open. Hn...? Coyote sighed. He could have sworn he heard Kaylin, but that very well could have been a dream. "Eshu?" His voice sounded rough even to his ears and his mouth tasted vaguely like cotton, it was somewhere between being sick and having a bad hangover. Apart from that everything seemed a little clearer today."As much as I would not mind continuing to be lazy, we need to get up." She worked at dislodging herself from his hold, making it clear she would settle for nothing less. "You are probably hungry, I thought we could eat outside today." Well, not truly outside but her private garden was close enough. He was hungry, very hungry actually. It took a moment to truly get moving once she did. His body was protesting after several days of inaction but he fought past it, knowing he would be scolded otherwise. She had his best interests at heart of course, but like any puppy he did not wish to be hauled out of the bed by the scruff of his neck for being disobedient. The analogy amused her. In some ways he was a puppy still. "I can help you until you find your footing again." What else was a mother for after all? She climbed off the bed and moved to open the garden doors off her room. Some fresh air would do him good. She turned back to check on his progress and was pleased to find him sitting up with his legs swung over the side of the bed."Now for the fun part." He moved to stand and it worked out really well, he did not immediately fall over onto his face like he expected."Try taking a couple of steps and see how you do." She knew he was quick to adapt and learn, one had to be to survive the environment he had lived in for years. The first few steps seemed to go alright, if a little shaky. He would just have to take things slow for a little bit- one walked before running after all.Coyote did end up stumbling when he got close to the doors and he blushed a little when Eshu had to catch him. "I wish you did not have to do that." He still had his pride. Not being able to do little things like this stung a bit. His blush deepened when she chuckled at him."What kind of mother would I be if I did not watch out for my pup?" She helped him out into the garden and down onto the grass so he did not just end up falling down. "I will be right back with food."He supposed that was alright, no one else needed to know about this after all, it was just between the two of them. He nodded when she mentioned about going to get food, that would certainly be a good idea at this point. While he waited he found himself looking around, he and Kaylin had not been out here since the day Eshu had offered this life to them. The light in here was strange, tinted slightly toward purple, but the flowers were beautiful and vibrant. He could see and hear the the snakes and other animals around as if he were a lot closer than he was."The process heightens one's senses for a time. It will dull some by the time you are free of me." She returned with a tray in hand, setting it on the grass between them and flopped onto the grass. "As for the purple light...it is for the plants from Eshurian. Things are a little different there." Tien was still convinced that was her brother's fault. "Eat something, and make sure to have water too...you are probably a bit dehydrated after the last few days."The look he gave her for that clearly said 'Yes, mother.' and the snort he earned in return made him smile. He would be a good pup and eat though.

eviF - Passage of Power Tien & Brendall V It took Tien far longer than she might have liked to realize what gift she had given him. She tried to play off her aoidei's strengths because that was why she had chosen them. Coyote was particularly adept at weaving lies; he had deceived Lorinia and countless others for years- they thought him broken when he could not have been farther from it. It was a fact he might have argued before but now he knew better. He was curled up beside her again, with his head resting on her shoulder as he drifted on the edge of sleep. It was likely her thoughts that were keeping him awake but it was probably the best in this case.
"Coyote.""Hn?" His eyes opened the rest of the way when she addressed him and he smirked when his eyes caught hers. She was comparing him to a pup again."So what if I am?" She could not help it if he really looked like a sleepy puppy. Trickery ran her fingers through his hair in an attempt to smooth it, but he had woken up with serious bed hair that refused to behave no matter what was done to it. Likely something only another bath could cure. "I want to, need to, give you something." In reality the gift was already within him, it had been since she yanked him back from the brink. It was only now that she could see the trick for what it was and help him manifest it.Her aoide sat up some to get a better look at her, raising a eyebrow skeptically. "Don't I already have it?" He was not sure if it was solely his connection to her, his own highly developed sense of reading people or the fact that she was not trying too hard to mask things but Coyote knew she wasn't telling the whole truth."Well, yes, I guess technically you do." That was far more anticlimatic than I was going for. Thanks. At least she was amused rather than annoyed. Though that look reminded her a bit of a certain Vulcan."What is a....Vulcan exactly?" It was a word he never heard before."Earth thing, hard to explain." Better to wave it off for now and get this done. He seemed satisfied with that answer for now so that was good enough. She could explain another time when there were not more important matters to attend to.
"You have the gift of a silver tongue." It was a human descriptor, so she would no doubt have to explain. "One who is very persuasive, but this goes beyond that, it strengthens your natural talent for deception, bluffing and lies." There were times that Kaylin would have to deal with problems delicately, ones that could not be handled by her will alone. If he played well then he could help stack the deck in her favor, so to speak. "You already know how to read others well and are a good judge of character, so you do not need my help with that."
It was a less obvious ability than Kaylin's and it would hopefully become instinct quick enough. The idea was that he was not obvious, like a flat blade hidden up a sleeve. He would better be able to keep his future wife safe that way."A fine trick, mother." They would underestimate him and then he could in turn pull the rug out from under them anytime he wished."That is the general idea." It seemed...fitting.

xiS - Making Tracks Tien & Brendall VI The next day found them laying stretched out in the grass of the garden. She had taken Coyote out again to keep him moving and they had ended up staying out here. Tien knew he was still awake despite the fact that he had not spoken or moved for a couple of hours at least. He was trying to relax and enjoy the peace while he still had it. Tomorrow he would be able to go free and return to his lady. It was probably better that his prayers be done at dawn for that reason alone- she was sure that Raven missed him. Besides that, she had mostly pushed the thoughts of her other aoidei aside for the time being, but something had both Raven and Hawke anxious. She was keen on finding out what that something, or someone, was. But before prayers there was still more one thing to do.
"Coyote, turn over on your back.""Damn..." He had almost managed to count all of this time when she interrupted and made him loose track of the exact number. So, he had been counting the snakes in the garden again, or at least trying to. "Even I am not sure how many there are." Similarly she was clueless how most of them had even gotten here. Gifts, perhaps? It did not matter how they had gotten here, she would see that they were looked after regardless. "How high did you get?"He complied, wondering just what she was up to. "Sixties." And there a lot he had not counted yet.She whistled, clearly surprised by the number. Asherah and Gul would certainly have their hands full. It was his curiosity that pulled her back to the original point. "Your tattoo should reflect your station." He was not a simple mortal anymore. "Loose the shirt." She could have just done it but she wanted him to see her work. A mir'eshu's tattoo was a representation who they were at their core. He had already made tremendous changes in himself these last few days and needed to be reminded of that."How exactly do you plan to do this?" There certainly was no sign of the traditional ink and needles, at least that he had seen. He only realized afterward how silly of a question it was- this was Eshu and he was hers, in this moment she could do what she liked.Tien smiled and rolled over to be able to reach him. It was indeed a silly question but she would let it slide and simply answer his question with action instead. She reached out and touched her fingertips to his right arm where his tattoo ended and simply pulled up the ink toward his shoulder. Her smile widened into a grin when she glanced up at him. The look on his face was priceless. As the ink moved it darkened, turning the sunset into twilight and higher up a proper night sky. Whatever he had expected it most certainly was not this.Remarkably as she worked there was no pain, it was more like painting than anything else. Poor Kevin had struggled not to hurt him too badly when he had done the work originally; the man did not have a priestess' practiced hand at the art but he had done it anyway so the tradition did not slip away. He had done it a few nights before before Coyote had left to serve the witch, even though he had not technically been of age. The decision to do something for the good of his people made him a man, or so Kevin had said then - he had tried to keep that in mind when he first dealt with Lorinia. She was not surprised that this was more of Kevin's work. "He did Kaylin's as well." Gentle taps in in the sky lightened the ink, marking it with pinpoints of stars. "Good man, takes care of his family." In one of his dreams she had seen the memory of him giving Coyote the marriage bracelet for Kaylin and how surprised Coyote had been in turn. Poor Coyote, he could fool everyone about his love for Kaylin - including the woman herself - except for her father."I owe him a great deal." He was just glad that Kevin thought him a suitable match for Kaylin. Otherwise he would never have given him her mother's marriage bracelet."As long you look after Kaylin, I think he would call it even." Her fingers danced over the grass at the base of his tattoo, near his wrist, making seemingly random marks. His gaze had not left her hand once she started working and she felt enough little wave of surprise and amusement once he figured out just what she was doing. Paw prints in the same color as the stars, trailing through the grass up to where the coyote in his tattoo sat, howling at the setting sun."Mother...its beautiful.""It is merely what is inside brought to the surface." Once she was done she took his hand and squeezed gently. "You see the glimmers of truth in the fabric of others words and actions, no matter what it is made up to be. Those paws touch earth and make it passable no matter the terrain, like one sways another to their will." It was all there, laced up tightly in imagery that no one else but the two of them might truly understand and that suited just fine, given his station."Tonight is our last night?" He had caught the thought earlier, but had not wanted to interrupt her to ask."Yes, you will be able to see Kaylin tomorrow after your prayers are done."

neveS - Vow in Words Tien & Brendall VII Dawn came early which meant they had to be up even earlier so they would both have time to bathe, dress and eat. Since he was free to see his future wife today she wanted to make sure he looked his best. Kaylin certainly deserved as much after being so patient that Tien had stolen her man away from her. Hopefully the pup had grown into a fine young coyote that would please her. She had not realized how much being cooped up had stifled him because once they were outside Coyote was trying not to run ahead of her.
The pair had to walk to where they were going since he could not fly. By the time they reached the spot and settled down the first of the colors were starting to bleed into the sky. It was nearly time. "This final thing seals the pact between us- we speak as one." He would know the words he needed to say.Coyote nodded and slid his hands into hers, lacing their fingers together. He was ready for this whenever she was. He focused on the thoughts of the words that she nudged his way, rather than her voice. And so they spoke together, as if they were still one being.
"Confidant. Captain. And as the third, shadowsword.
I am the one the one they will not expect. The blade in the dark. The ace up a sleeve.
I keep the safety of your house, and guard your shadow, by whatever means necessary."
The words felt like they wrote themselves on his heart as they spoke them and became truth. This was who he was, who he should be.She waited a few heartbeats afterward in silence before speaking again. He was getting restless and anxious, she squeezed his hands gently and smiled. "There is one more for the Crown." The Lord of All That Is. This would tie up the last thread and see things through.
"My lord, we come before you this morning to praise you and adore you.
How awesome is your power, that You can allow the waters to rise and the mountains to crumble, yet keep the most helpless among us safe and alive because it is not part of Your design for them to perish and die.
How great is your wisdom, that You can lead us and guide us, close a door and open another, give us trials as well as blessings, and shepherd us all our lives until we are safe and finally home.
How deep is your love and how boundless your mercy, that no matter how grave our problems, how terrible our mistakes, how shameful our secrets, and how often we stumble and fall, we can pray to You for forgiveness, we can find in You our salvation."
It seemed appropriate given the state Coyote had come to her in. She waited until the the sun had fully risen past the horizon before letting go of his hands. "You are free to go, my pup. I am sure Kaylin is running a rut into the floor waiting for you." No doubt she had been counting the days. She would find out from her aoide what had happened once things settled down for a bit. No doubt Enjiron would be looking for her as well.
