Song And Scales

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.It was a lovely day out... well, at lovely as a day could be with no sun to shine. The wind had been warm on her skin, the temperature pleasant. And so she had decided to take her playing outside, as she often did. It allowed the mortals to come in and listen should they wish to, and in a sense it was almost like a constant reminder of the gods, who were always there. Who could listen and aid.

That little habit had stopped with her leaving, but now that she was back... well.

Music sat on her habitual perch, a small ledge closeby to what had once been the busiest street of the town, and brought her flute to her lips.

Sosiqui
"... cross-reference based on Mio's input, it should display just fine," Penny said eagerly as they rounded the corner. The two, mortal and god, were walking quickly along the sidewalk, with Penny catching her Lord up on occurrences while he had been absent.

As for the Dragon King... well. His purpose was rather different. He was, in truth, only half-listening to what Penny had to say, focusing instead on their surroundings. Things were much changed, but they were beginning to change for the better. Slowly, ever so slowly, and yet... there were mortals here, moving through the streets, rebuilding, offering bows or cautious smiles. This close to the Pantheon, the mortals here were almost entirely believers - or at least aware of the existence of the gods, if not following any particular deity in faith.

He paused, though, on a corner, holding up one hand; Penny's words trailed off. "Is... something wrong, Lord?"

"No, I just - there! Do you hear that? Music..." A faint smile spread over the Dragon's face. "I am sorry, my dear... but I believe I know the songstress. Could you complete your errands without me?"

Penny gave him a cheerful grin. "Of course, Lord."

He smiled back. "Then by your leave, my lady..." Not waiting for her answer, the Dragon King leapt into the air, spiraling easily upward to hover above the street, easily triangulating the source of the faint music. There... ah!

No doubt, as he drew closer and saw blue hair and robes, of the musician's identity. Feeling a bit impish at the sight of his old friend, Tian Yue landed softly on the roof tiles just above where Echo sat on the side of the building, waiting and listening silently until she had finished her piece.

"Well-played and well-met, Music," he said, quietly.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo continued her piece, unaware of her silent and well-hidden listener until she let the last notes drift into nothing and he finally spoke, quietly but easily audible.

...And thus Echo proceeded to to look everywhere for her friend, very teasingly so - after all, she very well knew that the sound had came from somewhere almost directly above her.

"I figure you are not as big as you told me." She stated, teasingly. "If I cannot see you from here !"

Sosiqui
"Were I as big as I could be, I would collapse the building out from under you - and I have no desire to do that." Tian Yue laughed and jumped down, landing lightly on the ledge next to her. "I see you have returned. I am glad to see you well - I am only sorry I could not do more for your little ones in your absence."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Is it fine." Echo answered softly, gently putting her flute back in it's case with the uttermost care. "I can certainly hold you to no obligations that I have not futfilled myself - they are safe, though, with the aoidei having taken care of them. And, I must admit, them having taken care of each other." It had surprised her, in a way. Perhaps it was true, what they said, about how children did not remain so for very long... Already all three were much more mature than they had been one year ago, even if it was in different ways.

"I have heard you have gone onto a journey of your own, indeed." Probably well after her, given that their paths had not... crossed, down there. She had remained in the tree for quite a long while indeed. "I have not explored the world tree much... only went where I needed to go, which thankfully had been rather evident." Straight down hadn't been very hard to find. "I am sure I would have gotten lost otherwise. It looked like such a maze, the branches..."

Sosiqui
"Still, I wish I could do more. A constant refrain, these days." Tian Yue smiled and moved to sit down next to her, dangling his legs and the tip of his tail over the ledge. "Ankou mentioned he had found you and yours. You are well, then?" She certainly appeared to be so, more radiant than he'd seen her and with her hair so intricately styled.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Yes, I am well. Nergal too, though... I would be lying if I say I was not glad to finally be home. The Underworld is certainly... different from everywhere else."

"But I will likely get used to it, in time." She would have to, after all, if she was to be queen. "It is not a bad place, per se... simply different." Like a shadow ghosting over the living world, imitating it the best it could while coming short in places. It was the impression she had gotten from her long stay in it. "I may have gotten too used to mortal senses, to be honest." Echo pondered alot, thoughtfully... but then, Harmodius had put it best.

It was all that they knew, now, the reborn. Human-like shapes.

Sosiqui
"It is good for us to remember - to stay close, to cherish, to treasure. To not forget where we came from, and what keeps us here." Tian Yue looked down at the streets below, at the mortals who moved there - far fewer than there had been before Gehenna, but their numbers were growing. It had been long enough that there were children now, and mothers near their time... "I did not strive to save All for my own sake... but for those of everyone around me. My followers. The ones who deny us still. My brothers. You, and yours." He gave her an almost sheepish grin.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Indeed..." That was not to be forgotten, as well. If it would be so, then this whole rebirth would have been meaningless. And he had a point, of course... Had she not fought for her own children, for those yet lingering in jewels, for all those who could not have fought themselves ? Was it not what had brought Music, of all things, to the battlefield ?

"But I am rambling." She said, letting out a small giggle that sounded like a thousand tiny bells. "Was the World Tree as maze-like as it seemed from the main path ?" That seemed like a much safer topic than the empty sky about their heads.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue made a face. "Much, much moreso. You could begin to comprehend it, I think - but even looking at the map makes poor Penny's head hurt. Even poor Mio, the computer, was strained to the uttermost limits of her processing power... a pity there is no extant god of Technology to calm her circuits." His tone was light, teasing. "But... we are done. We rest, now, gather our thoughts and calm our minds. Soon we will bring the fruits of our labor to our Lord and begin the healing of the sky."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Perhaps she could indeed begin to comprehend, having been there herself. Having seen it for herself as well. It seemed... immense. Beyond anything she had even seen.

The idea of having to map that...

"I think I get an headache simply by thinking about it." She had to admit, giving herself a little push to let herself fall off the ledge and onto her feet. "Walk with me ?"

Sosiqui
"Of course." Tian Yue followed suit, though he vaulted off the ledge rather than simply sliding down as Echo had. "I am glad that your travels through the World Tree ended well. Even I, who know better than most the vastness of the Infinite... even I underestimated it, somehow. Or perhaps the enormity of it destroys all our illusions of understanding."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Perhaps..." The goddess pondered it for a moment. She would not know much of infinite spans herself... or would she ? Her pace was slow and leisurely, more than enough for the dragon to easily follow her, her tail kicking up a pebble there and there.

Well, perhaps she would learn of it, in time. Echo was unsure why old worries she had thought buried rose again to bother her at this moment.

"I seem to have not missed much..." A blessing and an hindrance both - there had certainly been progress this close to the pantheon, at the very least. There were livable quarters for the survivors, a far cry from the piles of rubble that had once stood there.

"...Do you know if there is any of us reaching away from here ?" She pondered out loud, the thought suddenly occurring to her. "I went to the World Tree by the ground... Some of the people this far away knew little of what had happened, and that they were no longer in danger. It makes me wonder..." The survivors would be stronger united than scattered, she knew this much. "I know some of the mortals I had spoken to planned to make the trip here... But ultimately I do not know much." There were also the other worlds...

Sosiqui
"I do not. I think we have all drawn together close, for survival against Gehenna... and we are loathe to spread out again, to leave Creation's side. We have grown in power, yet in perception, shrunk to pinpricks... so tied in and tethered to one pair of eyes, one set of ears. One nose, one voice." The Dragon shrugged. "Such is natural for the Dragon Kings... yet less so, I think, for the Embodied Powers."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I see..." The goddess seemed to ponder this internally, ears moving according to whichever sound, be it the dragon's footsteps at her side, or birds chirping in the nearby trees, that caught her attention.

Perhaps this was for her to do...

Something seemed to occur to her as she did so. "When you went to the world tree... did you happen to see a blue horse-like creature ? That would be Aria, an errais... She came with me in my travels, but when the roots got too steep for her to go on safely, I went ahead alone. I have not heard from her since..." There was worry in her voice, and in the way her ears positioned themselves. "I can only hope she is alright..."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue tilted his head to one side. "No, I did not. We, too, had errais accompanying us - my Gringolet, and Ankou's Athanasius. While we were all separated for a time, I am sure they would have mentioned it if they'd found another of their number. Certainly, they would not have left her wandering..."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.At the mention of the name of Ankou's errais, one slender eyebrow rose in a mix of surprise and curiosity. "Certainly not... especially not her own son." Curious, indeed. Very curious. Was Aria aware of this ? Not that she would have opposed, but it was still curious. Ankou would threat the world-walker well indeed, and that would be enough to lighten any worry the mother might have. "I should not have left her alone in there..." Echo sighed, shaking her head - a few bangs slipped loose of her updo. But in a way it had been better that way. She likely would not have survived her long stay in the Underworld.

"Please, if you see her when you are about... let me know as soon as possible ?"

Sosiqui
"Of course. We did meet some gentle creatures within, a guiding feline race called the Nyanko. Perhaps they will find her, and bring her home." He did not mention the encounter with the demons; best not to worry her, and in any case he and Ankou had taken care of those quite nicely.

"And as for your children, my Lady, I find them... clever, perceptive. Too much so," he said, letting a light, teasing tone come into his voice.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Nyanko ?" Ah, there it was - her curiosity was awakened once more, and it helped chase worry away. There was little she could do beyond hoping that things would be allright. Aria, being the experienced traveler she was, would know better than to take too many risks. Hopefully. "What are they like ?"

"They are indeed very smart." There was pride in her words, rightfully so. "They learn quickly indeed.., I am very proud of how they managed in my absence." It was evident that her three children were beloved and precious to her, perhaps beyond anything else.

Sosiqui
"Like cats, almost exactly - yet a bit more nimble than a house-pet, capable of speech in the common tongue, with finely-tuned instincts for the Tree's turnings. Most of those we met were young, and as exuberant and excitable as any young creature." He grinned. "Including your children, in their own ways... did young Akakios tell you how he woke me up from deep slumber?"

His voice grew a bit quieter, then. "He is well titled, Mournsong; young Lacrymosa bestowed the healing of her domain upon my heart as well. They both honor their lineage."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The goddess seemed to ponder this information for a moment, lips pursing in thought. "I remember coming across some... well, they seemed to have once been camps, with maps carved into the living wood... Would that had once been theirs ?"

"I have heard of it." Oh, of course she had indeed, heard of this tale - though it was likely exaggerated on her son's end - exuberant and excitable, after all. "I am glad that he managed to bring you comfort when you needed it..." When she hadn't been there. Guilt stung at that thought. She should have been there, should have realized that his absence was unnatural, should have, should have...

So many things indeed, but what was done had been done. There was no changing it now.

"I heard you ever gave him a ride." Her expression turned into a mock-pout. "I could be jealous, even, that my son has seen you in your full ascension before even I."

Sosiqui
"Camps with maps, yes - those would have been Nyanko enclaves. I believe they are mostly dormant. We were fortunate to find some still awake."

Tian Yue nodded at her next words, a soft smile on his face. "He did, and she did - I have not yet encountered Sotiris, but I'm sure he'll prove just as interesting. His domain is cousin to my own, after all."

Then his expression turned impish. "Oh? Would you like a ride as well, my dear Lady Music?" His tail-tip twitched faintly, a sure sign that the Dragon King had mischief on his mind.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I think you would like him. He is... easily excitable." She was not speaking of it as a bad thing. "And I do believe he beats even you in mischief." And apparently, that was saying something.

Her own tail joined in the twitching, her own motion more of a wide arc than his - the constant, accurate tip-tac of a metronome. "After such an affront, I am unsure if I should accept. It would certainly need to wow me."

Oh, this was so on, and she knew it very well indeed. Had it not been for the mischievous light in her eyes and the grin that threatened to form on her lips, the goddess might have looked like that had been a serious statement.

Sosiqui
"Hmm, and I wouldn't want to scare the mortals..." The speed of his tail-wagging increased slightly. "Well, then. Instead of a ride... perhaps... a gift?"

It was something he had not done before, not in this life - but he could feel the knowledge in the back of his mind, a delicate awareness of power not yet unfurled. An adjunct to his own power of flight. What lifted him... could lift others as well. He could guide others into the Heavens...

The Dragon King sprang upwards into the sky, feeling his element catch and hold him easily; a gentle word, a gesture to it was all it would take. Here is Echo, Music; let her come in, carry her for a little while. She is favored by Us.

"Come on," he called down to her, grinning, his tail now wagging madly. "Spread your wings!"

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo looked up at him from the ground, painting the perfect portrait of puzzlement, with one eyebrow risen just so.

Curiosity certainly won this round, however, and she leaped to follow.

And, oddly enough for her, she did not fall down. She remained suspended in mid-air, looking even more puzzled than before. Well... This was certainly different.

And she certainly had no idea exactly how one did fly - one wide movement of her wings brought her, at least, closer to the dragon.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue just beamed at her, clearly amused - and just as clearly pleased with himself. He could feel the skies parting around her, lifting her up, accepting her. "So it does work - just as I remembered. An invitation into the Celestial Realm."

He held out one hand to her. "I believe your esteemed King might also enjoy this, would he not?"

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Certainly." At least, she thought so - he certainly seemed to enjoy flying down there, at least. A few more awkward movements of her wings and she was able to take the offered hand. It was too bad that she was not quite sure if Nergal had yet returned, or if he was still tending to matters down below - had she known, she would have certainly been of the option that this would have warranted disturbing him.

"Unfortunately I am not quite sure where he is at the moment, else I would certainly want to see for myself."

Sosiqui
"I shall have to invite him another time, then." The sky was hungry, eager to welcome more into its expanse now that he'd invited it to do so once; he laughed, partially in delight at its responsiveness. While it had never been his, truly, in this it would at least heed his commands...

"And does Nergal fare well? Did he return with you?" Tian Yue took her hand gently, lifting her up a little to his level. They weren't terribly high up, maybe seven feet off the ground, but a small collection of gawking mortals was starting to assemble. "Are you willing to go a bit higher? We can go anywhere you like."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."He did return with me, but he did not stay long. There is much yet to be done..." So much indeed. The goddess kind of hoped he would not ask exactly what, because she was not quite sure where she could start. "I could let him know to seek you out, when I see him next ?"

"We can try." The height, so far, was not so bad - and she certainly was not falling like the last time she had been suspended so far up in the air, so there was nothing scary about it.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue grinned ruefully at Echo's words. "Much to be done, indeed. An understatement. The world is all askew, and we are to pick it up and put it back in place. The sky alone is a great task - to say nothing of the planes of Heaven and Hell."

"Come, then - don't be afraid, you will not fall even if you falter. Your wings serve only to direct your movements higher or lower; the air will not cease to hold you no matter what you do."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Thankfully so indeed, because it was quite obvious Echo had no idea howsoever about flight - in fact, her wings only moved when she was actually moving and thinking about it. She moved to follow the dragon the best she could, still working out the proper movements that sent her where she wished to be.

"Much to do indeed... But much has been done so far." From up here, it was easy to see just how much had been rebuilt - broken buildings taken apart and made anew once more. Allysia's work, certainly, but by no mean sorely her own. "This... is starting to look like a city again, slowly. Much has happened while I was gone..."

Sosiqui
"I had nothing to do with it either," Tian Yue said, with a sigh. "Oh, my followers have been moving, though they have focused on reclaiming and rescuing knowledge in danger of being lost. But the task of rebuilding is vast. Still, when the sky is returned... then I will be proud. Still sorrowful that such was required, always... but the restoration will affect many, I know."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."That is certainly a good thing to focus on..." Echo hadn't even really thought of that. Of all the books and tablets that had been destroyed... of all that knowledge lost. She sighed in turn.

"I... should have known, really." She admired, with a sigh. "Should have known to seek you out..." But so many things happened. That wasn't exactly an excuse at all. "I fear I have been a poor friend, with being absent where I would have liked been needed."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue shook his head. "You didn't sleep for months - literally. We could go through the litany of should have-would have if you like, but... I have learned that dwelling on such things leads only to more pain. And believe me, I am quite experienced in fretting." He gave her a wry grin.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Having not been asleep for months certainly gave her even less of a reason to not have figured things out, really, but she had to admit that he was right, so she did not argue it any further. Apology of a kind had been given, and her heart felt a little lighter, at least.

"Do you, now ?" Echo asked, visibly a little amused. It did bring some images to mind, some more amusing than others. Like a large dragon watching over many things like a mother hen watched over her eggs.

Sosiqui
"Definitely." Tian Yue grinned, then rose a little higher into the air. "But enough of such depressing topics - where would you care to go? Perhaps when you ascend fully, you will have no need of my assistance, but for now... let us enjoy it."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Hmmm..." Echo mused out loud. It was a little hard to locate herself from a bird's eye view, to be honest - she was entirely unused to such thing, and it took her a moment to puzzle out where they were now. "I am unsure... I am certainly not used to seeing things from this angle." She had to admit. "Do you have anything in mind ?"

Sosiqui
The Dragon King laughed. "Only to give you a moment to remember, my dear friend. And, I will admit, to see if I could actually share my power of flight... I hadn't actually tried it before." He gave her a somewhat sheepish look.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo laughed in turn, the sound light and sweet. "Both very valid reasons indeed." That was indeed a moment to remember, and not something she had thought would ever happen to her. "Well, then..." She mused. "Then maybe..." Her expression turned impish. "Let us see if the student can outdo the master, hm ?"

With little else in the mean of warning, Echo bolted ahead in that impromptu race. She would need the head start, of course.

Sosiqui
"-hey!" Tian Yue protested. "That isn't fair!"

For a moment he contemplated 'cheating' back, shifting into dragon-shape and getting an instant nine-hundred-foot lead, but... well. That was hardly sporting.

Instead, the Dragon King chased after her, laughing. "Cheaters never prosper!" he shouted after her.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Indeed, cheaters never prosper. Or, at least, her head start did not help her out too much, given how inexperienced she was in flight, and he caught up with her quickly.

"Hmph." She grinned, looking over to her surroundings once they had stopped - they were right back over the pantheon "Fine. I shall make it up to you in tea, then."

At least, Music was not a sore loser.

A Lost One Returns

It was raining lightly, today – an odd thing as she was not quite sure where the rain was falling from, but nonetheless small drops of water were falling. It was not raining enough for the goddess to get drenched, so she simply paced though it. She wanted to check upon the group from Koiso, to see what was going on and what they were doing. Allysia especially, as she had not seen the architect since the Day of the Dead. That was a little worrying in itself, and she could only hope she had not made a bad encounter during the event.

The city streets had some small amount of activity to them, most mortals preferring to remain inside due to the rain. Those who where about seemed to recognize her, and stopped to bow to her. It no longer caught her off-guard, and it probably should have never caught her off-guard to begin with. Likewise, the sight of a goddess walking down the street had became commonplace again since her return. Most seemed too shy to address her at length, or perhaps were too intimidated, which saddened her. The goddess never meant to come as intimidating, or distant and unreachable, but it seemed to happen nonetheless. What could be done about that ?

Hmmm...

Now was not the time to ponder this in length, however, not when she still had to learn about what had happened in her absence. She had to connect to those who believed in her, then reach outward. Music did not want them to think she had abandoned them, after all. She did not intend to repeat past mistakes... not that she knew if she had even done such thing.

She rather hoped not.

Music knew well beyond turning the corners that there were other people on that other streets – footsteps, the sound of boots on the cracked pavement, but more importantly... there was something that stood out from the rest of the sounds.

hooves.

Someone on horseback, perhaps ? Or maybe... Echo found herself rushing though the corner, meeting up with exactly the face she had looked for – Allysia...

And at her side... Was someone that had held much of Echo's worries ever since she had returned.

”ARIA !” There was relief in the goddess' voice, as well as worry – the errais definitively looked a little worse for the wear, and a little thinner than she remembered her to be. She was on her own... four hooves, however, and walking steady. Echo ran the last few steps that separated her from the equine and the half-elf, hands reaching to caress Aria lightly – the errais leaned into the touch gladly. ”Oh, my dear...” There was guilt in her voice, now.

'Lady Echo.' Aria's mental voice was soft, full of fondness. 'You are well, I am glad, so glad. After I heard your fall, I feared...' The equine trailed off then, not quite daring to voice what she had feared.

”You should not worry about me, oh... It is I who worried about you. I never meant to abandon you...”

'I had figured it would be so, and it came at no surprise to me that we would have to part ways. Do not blame yourself, my lady.' Aria looked as stern as an horse was able at those words. 'I have travelled far, and I am experienced... but it still took me a long time to get back up and find the right entrance. There were marks when I did, though, clearly marking the entrance to this world, which helped.'

”Marks...” Tian Yue. It had to be. She had much to thank her friend for when she would be able to see him next.

”We found her not too far away from here, looking for you.” Allysia stepped in to explain then. ”I told her to rest first, but she would not listen to any of it.” The half-elf frowned and glared somewhat at the equine, who gave a quiet huff in answer.

Echo, for her part, could only laugh at the scene unfolding in front of her – relief once again very present in the sound. ”Why am I not surprised...” The goddess mused out loud, before continuing. ”Come, my dears. Your son awaits you, Aria, and are certainly just as worried as I was. Ishum can take care of these scratches for you...”

'I would not disagree to that.' The errais seemed calmer now that she knew her goddess truly safe, and had seen it with her own eyes. The field where her family had taken residence was not far, and with it close, so were the promise of rest, fresh water and grass, and company. Echo fell into step with Allysia and Aria, and they moved in relative silence (as much as things could be silent around Echo). But this did not last long.

”...I am sorry, Aria.”

'Lady Echo !' The equine huffed again, and this time it was Allysia's turn to laugh.

The architect had matters to speak with her goddess, but such things could wait a little longer.

Enter The Bard

Elizabeth Atory had traveled for a long time now, years as far as she knew – ending up in this strange world well before the destructive events overtook it, and well before the sky had dissolved into nothing. The bard had lived where many had died, had allowed no one to take the harp that she carried with her, and kept on going in this strange world she could barely understand, where the corpse of old machines that once moved without steam and old building made of foreign substances made up the landscape.

But she had survived, if barely at times, and when she had recovered, Elizabeth had continued on, if only because her family's hopes and pride rested on her shoulders. The harp, carefully bundled and resting across her back, was the only thing she had left at this point, and she had to, at the very least, see that task done. She had promised it to her mother, on her deathbed, that she would find the person whom it belonged to.

The goddess whom it belonged to.

Elizabeth had always thought that was a silly story, something her mother had made up as a bed side tale to gently lull her to sleep with her melodious voice, the tale of a goddess and her harp, golden-stringed with a material that was foreign, a goddess of music and song that was like a gentle maiden from the fairytales of old. A goddess that had died such a long time ago that no one remembered her name or her existence, beside the person who had been entrusted her harp – which had then passed down from generation to generation, from mother to son, father to daughter, bard to bard, ever since. The harp would only play for the goddess' fingers and no others. Elizabeth had stopped believing in it as she became older, but her mother, in her old age, told her it was her turn now, to try to find the goddess whose name had been forgotten, and hand it to her.

The harp.

She had never seen it before that night, three years ago, when her mother passed on. It was beautiful, cherrywood carefully carved with such amazing skill that could not simply be found in the other instruments she had seen. The harp had been unbelievably light, too, which actually allowed her to travel as she did, with it carefully strapped onto her back. It's strings were golden, shimmering to the slightest light. It was only after weeks passed, after her mother had been returned to the earth and that her feelings of grief had eased that she actually bore the thought of looking at it in greater detail. That she dared reach her fingers to pull at the strings.

No sound had came out, and it was then, and only then, that Elizabeth started to believe. That she started to think that, maybe, after all, that story... might have some truth to it. Which meant that she had to find this goddess, no matter what, if only to honor her mother's last wish. It was not like there was anything else keeping her here, after all.

Perhaps it had been that sheer determination to accomplish just that that had given her the strength to live though the waves – it was the only way she could explain what had happened – and though the renewal that came afterward. The bard had lost her companion, the one with the skill to world-walk, quite early into those waves, and she could only hope - pray, even - that out of the many places they had visited, that this was the right one. The brown-haired woman started to hear of gods, as her travels progressed. Many god and goddesses who dwelt here, had been the ones to save the rest of the worlds from a certain end. It was the first sign that she might, indeed, be on the right track, that the bard just might find what she sought. There had been many who called themselves gods in those other worlds, who wanted nothing but to take the harp, but it refused to play for them, and so Elizabeth knew that they were liars.

And now, after three years of searching, after so many bones broken and mended, so many sicknesses endured and healed, the tall woman stood in front of a large garden which seemed to know no end.

The pantheon, the city dwellers had called it. What more fitting name, for a place which held gods. Was one of those beings, there, the goddess she sought ?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elizabeth spent many days nearby, watching the activity around the pantheon, melding in nicely enough with the other mortals that had taken refuge here. Sometimes she caught glimpse of truly usual things, of beings that made her heart race and caught her attention, stood out from the rest of the crowd by their mere presence. These were gods, and she could believe it, with some of them. There was a sense of power about them, beyond her comprehension.

It would be on that day that the last three years of her life came to full circle. Elizabeth saw her descend the stairs, alone, one step in front of the other with a grace and elegance of a skilled opera singer, her features alien yet more beautiful than anything she had ever seen. Strings, golden like the ones of the harp, wound around her arms and behind her as if it was some kind of tail, long strands of something she could not identify adorning her back as if some kind of wings. Her eyes, blue on blue, moved with every step, every sound that came out of her form. Sound and melody followed her like an aura, like a faithful familiar, only waiting to be called and truly unleashed.

And it was at that very moment that Elizabeth knew she had found what she had been looking for. The woman saw her, looked at her, and there was the urge to advert her gaze, as if she could not dare look directly into those eyes. Instead, she knelt.

”I...” She started, but could not find the words, at first. They jumbled into her mind, and refused to come out right.

”Are you well... ?” The goddess asked her, worry creeping into her voice. That voice... pure harmony, pleasant beyond anything the bard had ever heard. It was like if the goddess sang every word that passed those purple lips.

”Yes.” Elizabeth finally managed. How could she not be, when she had finally found what she had been looking for ? What her family had been looking for, for so long ? Out of all of her line... it was her that had managed it. The bard was certain, now, but still, one thing remained. ”My lady, please, allow me a moment. I have come from far away... to bring you something that has been entrusted to my family's name in times long forgotten.” It was only then that Elizabeth moved once more, carefully placing the instrument on the ground and pulling the cloth off. It looked much too big and hefty for her to carry, but it had been light as a feather. Even now, after the influence of decay, the instrument remained every bit as beautiful as it had once been, the cracks of the wood melding with the design.

Echo's eyes went wide, at the sight of the instrument. Recognition or surprise, the mortal bard could not quite tell. Those eyes were so foreign... ”I come to swear fealty to the Lady of Music, as my ancestors have before me. I come to serve the one person who can bring this harp to life...”

Echo took a few careful steps toward the instrument, unaware, or perhaps uncaring, of the many pair of eyes that watched this scene unfold. Elizabeth still did not dare to look up, as if she was afraid of what might happen if she dared.

One hand reached to caress the curves of the woods. It felt familiar... it felt right, moreso than the mortal-crafted instruments from which she had to withhold most of her power lest she accidentally damage them. It seemed to call, silently, beg to, at last, be played again.

This hand moved, toward the strings, and, gently, pulled one of them. Elizabeth's head darted up automatically when she heard sound come from it, crystal clear, more pure a sound than any mortal-made harp could produce. It was followed by another, and another, the note weaving one melody, full of emotion, of gladness and happiness, and the bard had to blink away the tears that clouded her vision, clouded her sight of the goddess of Music and the one instrument that had been rightfully hers.

At last... her journey was over. She was home now, or at least what would become her home.

The melody eventually ended, as all melodies did, and Elizabeth looked to the floor once more when the goddess' attention returned to her. ”My goddess...”

Her chin was gently taken into a slender hand, her head tilted slightly to look at Music, the goddess' expression full of gladness and kindness. ”You need not to advert your gaze so. Your respect you have already shown me, by coming all this way. I... thank you. I am named Echo.” She had thought this lost, this instrument. She remembered it well, now that the memory had been awakened by it's melody, but could not recall it's name. Echo would need to find it a new one, perhaps, in time. ”Do come with me... You seem to come from far away indeed, and some food and a bath look like it would do you much good. Then, if you like... you can tell me your story.”

Settling Down

It was odd, after being constantly on the move for the last three or so years, to finally be stationary again. Echo certainly went though lengths she had not especially been required to go, in order to make sure that this new arrival would be comfortable – Elizabeth had expected the goddess would simply go on with her day, but it hadn't been so. The harp had been relocated upstairs, but then Echo was right back down for her, leading her into the streets. This town had seen better days, but was certainly in better shape than the others the bard had been to in her travels. There were many new buildings, to replace the old ones that had crumbled down into dust and debris. There were people living there, stopping to bow respectfully at the goddess as she passed by.

And her, the bard, certainly no one special by any mean, standing and walking beside such a powerful being, a powerful force. Simply being at Echo's side made Elizabeth want to write, to put down her story, her travels into song, so that such stories would not be forgotten. The bard certainly planned to do so, later on, but Echo's mere presence seemed to inspire her like nothing else ever had, much like if she had been a muse personified.

As far as Elizabeth knew, the goddess could very well be exactly that.

”And so you say your whole family line has been bards, Elizabeth ?” Echo tilted her head upward to look at her, expression genuinely curious. This wasn't just simple, idle talk to fill the silence, or disinterested questions spoken about out of politeness – the goddess wanted to know these things, wanted to know all there was to know about her, genuine curiosity and desire. Her wings let out a calming, low hum as they continued to walk.

”Ah... yes.” Elizabeth answered, after noticing she had been staring. Again. At least the goddess did not seem to be offended... but those eyes were certainly the most curious thing she had ever seen. And she had seen some odd things on her journey. Weird worlds that the bard might not even have been able to invent if she tried.

It would be her duty to write about them all.

”In my family... We were always bards.” The young woman started to elaborate. ”There were always the odd one, of course, but... for the most part. My uncle worked at fixing the steam machines and airships, for example... I am an only child, but this is what I wished to do.”

Airships ? That was certainly an odd notion, which brought quite a few mental images in her mind. How interesting... ”I will have to visit your homeworld sometime...” The goddess mused aloud. Especially since the bardic arts were still common there, as Elizabeth spoke of. But the bard had been gone for so long... what remained of it, the goddess wondered ? Still, there was longing in the mortal's eyes. ”If you would kindly be my guide ?”

Elizabeth smiled at the prospect, even if there was worry. Echo was just... so warm and friendly, on top of being a goddess – it was certainly hard to refuse her anything. ”Of course.”

”I cannot promise that it will be soon... There is still quite a bit left to be done here.” She would reach out, indeed... But for now, she was loathe to leave her children again so soon after coming back to them. Certainly she could not have been the only one to think about reaching out to the other worlds... ”And you certainly deserve a rest after being on the move for so long... Ah, here.” The goddess gestured toward one of the buildings in the distance. ”There we are...”

”Are you sure this is alright ?” Elizabeth asked for the fifth time since they had left the pantheon, fidgeting with her hat nervously. ”I do not wish to intrude or to be a bother...”

”Do not worry.” Echo assured the bard again, patiently, as she knocked on the door of the building. ”They will not mind, I do not think.”

It was not long before the door opened, revealing a woman with dark skin and deep, azure turquoise eyes. ”Ah, Lady Echo.” Allysia smiled, then gave the bard a curious look-over. ”And who might this be ?”

”Allysia, this is Elizabeth. She is in need of a place to stay for awhile, and I thought you would not mind.”

”Certainly not, especially if she's willing to help out.” The half-elf grinned, stepping aside to let the two inside. ”Be careful of the clutter, through...”

And Allysia wasn't kidding. Her newly-made house was certainly fondly nicknamed the danger zone for a reason – papers, pencil, pens, rulers and all sort of other things littered the whole place, expecially the large table. Elizabeth couldn't help but laugh. Ah, the creative process of an artist... Allysia's art was a very different one, as far as a quick look would reveal her, but her home certainly used to look a lot like this. ”I have certainly navigated though worse.”

”Certainly.” Echo looked just as amused – the very same thought had occurred to her, as well. ”Well, if you need me, you know where to find me.” Music offered with a smile, and excused herself from the two ladies. They had much to learn about each other, after all... From what little Echo knew of Elizabeth, she figured they would get along... and the goddess could only hope her guess was right.

”Well, settle yourself wherever you want. There's a few rooms upstairs, pick whichever one you like best and ill relocate the stuff's that in it.” Allysia offered with a grin. Elizabeth secured her bag along her shoulder and went to go up the stairs, but ended up looking at the plans with open curiosity.

”What are these plans for ?” The bard asked, and the architect grinned again.

”Just a little thing for the future... Here, get yourself settled and ill tell you about it.”

Catching Up

midnight_medea
Cosine was much happier now that she knew Ankou was back and also the rest of her surrogate family. She felt renewed and rather productive, she was spending the morning tidying and cleaning whilst Ankou was off doing ... whatever it was he did during the day. She had the balcony doors open, had made the bed, and was now picking up bits and pieces that lay over the floor. Mainly books and clothes.

She hummed a tune to herself, not one that she knew ... though number was related to song she had not heard many since her rebirth. It must have been one of Lien's she realised. Probably some pop song the girl had heard on her travels and liked.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo, for her part, had managed to evade her followers and her aoidei for the time being. Allysia seemed to have some kind of plan and she... was not quite sure what to think of it.

Music wandered around the garden, when one ear rose, then tilted in Cosine's direction. Someone was singing, which caught her attention rather nicely. But even so, the voice seemed rather familiar...

It took another minute of walking before her sight was able to see what her hearing had picked up early on, and she stopped, smiling for a moment, before she started humming along.

midnight_medea
Cosine placed the books she had gathered on the shelves beyond the curtains and turned to pick up a rather creased blanket that had found its way to the floor and been forgotten. She had really become quite lazy in the days since Ankou had returned. Far too much distraction.

She carried the blanket over to the balcony and started to shake it out, the voice caught her own keen ears and she smiled as she spotted a friendly face.
"Echo." She called, holding the blanket in one hand and waving to her friend. "Morning!" It was good to see the goddess of music, very good indeed. She looked well.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo stayed put until she was finally noticed, and then smiled. "Cosine !" It had been much too long since she had seen Numbers - another of her oversights caused by worry, most likely. At least that time was past, hopefully for good this time. She could not worry about Nergal constantly, or else she would get nothing done for herself.

"How are you ?" Music asked.

midnight_medea
Cosine leaned on the rail of the balcony and smiled warmly.
"I am well, now you have all returned." She grinned and looked the goddess over, she seemed to be in one piece. "Come up! I will make you some tea and we can catch up. I only have Kou's side of the story."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Coming up would definitively be easier if her wings actually had any inclination of lifting her off the ground. Or if Tian Yue had been around - ha, wouldn't that been amusing ? But as it was, neither were actually happening.

"You'll have to give me a moment." Music shook her head, then headed toward the door.

midnight_medea
Cosine took the moment to toss the blanket on the bed and walk through to the door, she opened it in preparation for the goddeses arrival and went to organise some tea and possibly, if they had any, some biscuits. That may be pushing it though, she thought to herself.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo basically leaped up the stairs when she finally had made her way there, very happy by this chance meeting. She hadn't seen Cosine in what seemed to be forever, and she was more than eager to catch up with Numbers.

Echo stopped at the open door a moment to straighten her dress before stepping inside at a more gentle pace. "It is really good to see you." The goddess smiled again.

midnight_medea

Cosine looked up as Echo walked into the rooms and smiled.
"It is good to see you too." She said, reaching for two mugs and setting them on the side as she waited for the kettle to boil. "Ankou was very unhelpful when I asked him if you had made it back okay." She smirked and rolled her eyes. "But you are well, yes? and Nergal?"

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The matter of Ankou's unhelpfulness was met with an amused chuckle, and one shaking of the head as Echo took place at the table. "Let us see if I will be more helpful, hm ?"

Echo was silent for a moment before nodding. "We are well. The travel was a bit rough, but... I have made it just fine." The worse she had gotten were bruises, really. "He is... rather busy, through. He is probably still down there at the moment. He returned with me briefly, but there is still so much to do in the Underworld..."

midnight_medea
"Ah yes." Cosine said recalling some of the things Ankou had told her about. The underworld, it all sounded so surreal. "I hear I will not recognise Nergal anymore. Now he is himself, and the realm. I must see him, though, maybe when he is less busy." She remebered they had talked about him possibly needing her help. "Will you be moving to the Underworld?" She glanced around a little, maybe Ankou would be moving too, he had not spoken of it ... yet.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. That last sentence seemed to take Echo a bit off-guard for a moment, but then she shook her head again, tucking a bang behind one long hair as she moved. "No... I do not plan on it. I am more needed here than down there. I... am Queen, however." That last comment had Echo's cheeks coloring lightly. "I am not sure how good a queen I can be... but I have promised my best, and this is what I shall give. But it is more of a title rather than actual rule."

Which was better this way, since actual ruling and running eluded her rather nicely. "I will tell him to come see you when I next see him, if you wish ?"

midnight_medea

"I think you will make a wonderful queen. Compassionate but fair." She raised both eyebrows and carried the mugs over to the table. It seemed so intimidating, the thought of having a realm, though ... they all did didn't they? In their own way. "I would like it if he did stop by. I have not seen him since ... well, since the day of the dead. A year ago. I would like to offer my help and compulsive attention to numerical detail if he should need it."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I can only hope so. It is... a little intimidating, to be honest. But I could tell that it meant a lot to him." She traced her finger along the edge of the mug for a moment, idly in thought. That long ago... Well, in a way she was not surprised, not really. So many things had happened since that, and he had left long before she had.

"It would certainly help him a great deal." Her hand moved to take the cup by the handle. "But you know him." She continued with a chuckle. "He would never ask for it." So suborn, too suborn sometime, her Nergal.

midnight_medea
"Of course." Cosine laughed and nodded, somethings had not changed then. Even if his appearence had he was still the same old Nergal deep down. "Do you think ... " She paused a moment and wondered if this was something she should be concerned about. "Do you think Kou will go too, to the underworld. He has not said anything, though of course, it is where he belongs. By Nergal's side."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo took a sip from the cup, enjoying the taste a moment before swallowing, her expression thoughtful. That was a complicated question, she had to admit. "I am not sure..." Ankou had been to the Underworld, Nergal had told her that much, but she hadn't seen him. The Guide had been there and gone like a flash, for all Echo actually know. It occurred to her with that question that she actually knew very little about Ankou. They were on friendly terms, and she had seen some his habits from living within his rooms for some time, but much about the Guide remained a mystery to her. In ways he was very alike to his brother, and in others completely different.

"But he... gather souls, right ? Brings them down ?" She wasn't even certain about that. "Ill'd expect him to be more... out and about than to just stay down there constantly, then, wouldn't he ?" Echo wasn't sure this even made sense at all.

midnight_medea
Cosine laughed a little as Echo spoke.
"Sorry, I forget you are not an expert on these things. I just assume, with you being Nergal's partner." She waved her hand and shook her head. "Sorry, but yes, you are right. He is a gatherer of souls so would naturally spend more time out than in. I do not mind either way, it is just ... I don't know really. Ignore me." She smiled a little and looked down at her tea. It was not like it was really her business to fuss over these things.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Unfortunately for Cosine, Echo was an expert of these things... Well, at least with what she thought was probably going though Numbers' mind at the moment. It was a road she had traveled for a long time, and if she could avoid the trip for her sister... "It... is not so bad." She admired, uncertain if her words would do good or ill in that case. "Once you get used to it. You can't worry for him, not constantly, or... Well, I have done that. This is not a pleasant road to follow." She sighed, taking a sip of tea. "They know what they are doing... for the most part. It... makes the time spent together sweeter, in a way."

midnight_medea
Cosine looked up at Echo and smiled a little.
"I think Nergal shares more things with you." She said softly, bringing the drink to her lips. "Sometimes." She added, thinking of this last disappearence. "It is something I need to get used to, especially if Ankou wishes for me to stay, I imagine the role of a Spirit Guide means he will not be home much at all. It seems to be a job for a constant wanderer."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."You would be surprised." Prior to this, really, Nergal had never really told her much about anything at all. "But in a way... it is hard for them, as well." Echo could only think of one reason why Nergal had not mentioned her leaving as soon as he had been able to do things on his own and did not require her for focus...

That reason being that he hadn't really wanted her to go. That thought... had been heartwarming, in a way.

"...Ask him if you could come with him ? Or if you want to know... ask him what it is that he does. Ask him to share those things with you ?" It occurred to her, suddenly. With her and Nergal, it didn't really work out this way. But with Ankou and Cosine... "If he is going around, visiting other worlds... possibly running across civilizations... You could teach them ?" She probably would not get to come constantly, but... This was an idea, at least.

"But you have your own things to do as well. You should not forget that... I nearly did. All I did was worry, and... many things and many peoples around me suffered as a result." Her children, after all, who saw first hand their mother's worry and lack of playing. Tian Yue, who's distress she had not noticed. Cosine as well, had been one of those persons - who ended up having to care for Music's children in her stead.

midnight_medea
"All very true." Cosine said with a small smile, taking a sip of her tea. "I would like to see some of the world with him. To expand my influence and you are right, it is not good to constantly worry about shuch things. They are gods with responsibilities, just as we are. It is hard to remember that when you are minus distractions." She smirked a little. "I heard from Laughter that Harmodius believes the Pantheon the only safe place, yet here I wait and nothing happens. It seems wasteful."

She took another sip of her tea and watched Echo for a moment.
"I discovered a new friend, Phirren, he is a Nyanko. I am thinking of accompanying him to the world tree so that he might find his family, or at least learn what might have happened to them."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The only safe place... ? Well, potentially, but yet...

"If we do nothing, then who will ?" Music pondered out loud. If everyone stayed within these walls, and did nothing for the world around themselves, well, the grigori might as well have already won. "It is a risk, maybe, but we have to act."

Echo was reaching out, in her own way, at least making sure what had once been the town around the pantheon was rebuilding. A small thing, but it was better to start small.

"A nyanko... Hm. Well, I do know where the entrance to the World Tree is, but it is a fair bit away from here. It took me a few weeks on horseback."

midnight_medea
"Oh gosh." She had not realised that the entrance was quite so far away. Weeks, that was certainly not a journey she wanted to do on her own, especially as she was still so influenced by her mortal form. "That is a bit ... intimidating." She sighed and took yet another sip of her tea. "Maybe I can make myself of other use. I would really like to see a school built, I have been holding some informal lessons in the gardens but children need structure if we are to make a better world."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."A school, yes... That is a good idea." Echo's expression turned pensive again, finger sliding on the rim of her cup again idly. Certainly there had to be some place that would work well for such a use, and then... textbooks, maybe ?

"There is probably a building already rebuilt that could be used to hold classes." Maybe even music lessons... but this was Cosine's idea, not hers. "Many things have been rebuilt so far, mostly houses to home the families, but there is still likely something that can work. I would need to ask Allysia..."

midnight_medea
Cosine smiled at the goddess' thoughts and relaxed back in her chair.
"No, it is all right. I can explore myself. I am sure that I can find a place that will suit my needs." She smirked a little. "No, not just my needs but all of us. There are many who have something to teach. Yourself included I would imagine?"

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Ah... Perhaps I could." Echo put on a mock-thoughtful face as she emptied her cup. "Perhaps we'll start with counting rhymes ? A common ground." The idea amused her a little. It had never escaped her that many songs involved numbers. Pretty much everything involved numbers when one really took the time to think about it, and the goddess found herself wondering just how it was to rule over something so... all-compassing.

"If you need books to make exercise sheets, I am quite sure I have a few blank tomes laying around..."

midnight_medea
"Yes, counting rhymes are entertining. Your little ones certainly like them. Well Crys does." She smiled fondly and placed her mug on the small table. "I would certainly like some blank tomes if you have them. I might try to find some slates. They would serve until there is a greater supply of paper."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Slates..." Echo pondered out loud, one finger tapping against the side of her now empty cup, the impact of her nails onto the porcelain creating a small, rhythmic sound. That certainly was a very good idea as well, however she did not process any of those. Her followers, however... "I will see what I can find, and bring it all to you ?"

They would certainly be more than willing to help along with something like this - especially since it was education for the children. Allysia would be all over that in a heartbeat, most likely.

midnight_medea
"That would be wonderful." Cosine replied, feeling a little more enthused now that Echo believed her idea was a good one. She listened to Echo's nail tap against the cup and smiled warmly.
"I am glad you are back Echo. Hopefully for a while now."

She meant it of course. Things were not quite as they had been before the world had started to crumble but at least normality was creeping in slowly. People were trying to gain back what they had lost.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I am glad to be back as well... and thankfully it did not seem like I have missed much." Nothing too drastic, at any rate. There were changes and improvements all around her, of course, which was a good thing. It was a time for rebuilding, after all. Rebuilding and cementing the mortals' faith in their favor. Echo was no war general, far from it, but even she could see that such a thing would likely be needed in the times to come.

midnight_medea
"Nope, not much at all." Cosine smirked and stood to collect the cups so that she could begin to wash them up. "We have to make this a regular thing. Tea and talk."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. This would be far from a bad thing, actually, and Echo smiled. "Certainly." Ankou might not appreciate the female takeover in his own room, but, hey, it was not like he was actually here to complain.

"What kind of tea was that ? That was rather delicious." She'd been pondering weither or not to ask for a little bit, but curiosity finally overtook restrain. She would certainly like to acquire some for herself if possible.

midnight_medea
"I am not quite sure." Cosine reached for the canister and opened the lid. "Isra gave it to me, her tribe seem to be very skilled at blending spices just the right way." She placed the can down and opened one of the cupboards where she found a bowl. "Here, take some with you, I'll ask her for some more next time I visit."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Ah... Thank you." Echo took the bowl carefully as it was offered to her. "If there is a blend of tea you particularly like, I could see if I have some ?" The goddess offered. She did not especially feel comfortable with taking without at the very least offering something in return, no matter how little it was. Echo was also more used to giving than to receiving, oddly enough so for a goddess, one might think.

And she did have a wide assortment of tea now, really. There had been some in the mortals' offerings to Nergal, and she was much more likely to drink it than he was.

midnight_medea
Cosine smiled and leaned back against the counter, her finger picking at the cuff of her embroidered dress.
"I like to try anything." She said, looking across the kitchen. "So maybe if you bring your favourite flavour next time. I sometimes wonder if I liked tea so much before or if it is a recent development. Lien was partial to coffee I believe."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I do wonder... Zero liked tea. But she liked it iced, not hot, for the most part." Her host was long gone, truly, but the young teenager never quite left her mind. She came at the focus of her thoughts from time to time, like now, then faded back in the background again until something else would invoke that memory, and the part of her that had once been the young girl.

"I think I already know what I will bring." She stated, expression mischievous. She knew what was likely to pique Cosine's curiosity. "I think you will probably like it..."

midnight_medea
"Oh, now you do have me intrigued." Cosine smiled, they might only be talking about tea but it was the simple pleasures in life. Especially in dark times. "I will look forward to our next tea date."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Well, I have to make sure you will not forget somehow." Music teased, winking at the younger goddess. "Since there seem to be much work awaiting you."

There were matters awaiting her too, really, even if she was currently doing a good job avoiding such at the moment.

"Let me know if you need any help, with anything ?" Busy or not, she could always make time for her sister. Well, perhaps not make time, but shove things aside for a moment.

midnight_medea
"Of course. You are the first person I will come to if I need help with the school. I think I may get started on it right away." She would go for a walk in the morning and search for a venue. It did not have to be huge, just large enough for a class or two.
"Tell Nergal I'd like to see him when he has the time. Just to catch up. I do not want to keep him from more urgent business."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Of course." Echo nodded along with her words. She would let him know of such, but... perhaps he may seek her first, for all she knew. He dropped by somewhat, but infrequently and not for long periods of times.

But it was the way it had to be. And she had, at last, finally accepted it. Had it been Zero's pre-conceived notion of what a relationship had to be like that had caused her such anguish ? It might have been. But they were deities, not mortals, really.

midnight_medea
"Thank you." Cosine said with a smile, though she could tell something still niggled at the music goddess. "I should probably get back to tidying. If I stop now I will never finish it."

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."That is often how it goes." Echo grinned, clearly a little amused as she rose from her seat. To be truthful, she never even remembered to do it herself, not anymore. Alto kept himself busy with such things for the most part, and the mute aoidei really was glad to have something to do.

"I should likely get going myself, at any rate. I shall see you soon, I hope ?"

midnight_medea
Cosine nodded and smiled warmly as Echo rose from her seat.
"yes, of course. I will probably drop by sometime next week. I have some more counting exercises for Kios and Crys." She was so very proud of her little pupils. "Enjoy the rest of your day."

Sheet Music

She had finally been able to find some time of her own – children visiting Ankou and Cosine, and none of her mortal followers nearby. The quarters that were usually so lively were now strangely silent.

Not completely silent, of course, because she was still inside them, the tune of her wings humming gently as she cleared the desk of her music room and gathered the supplies she needed.

Paper. Pens. Rulers.

Echo did not write out music sheets all that often, and it would probably be surprising for anyone to know that. The fact was that she did not need sheet music at all. The goddess' memory for notes, harmony and compositions was infallible.

Therefore, the work she was about to do was not for her own benefit. No, this was for Cosine – for her school project, in fact. The mortal children still needed education, somehow, to assure their future. They would learn of numbers – but why not of music, as well ?

Some of these young minds might very well be the musicians, the bards of tommorow.

When she was sure that she had all the supplies she needed, Echo sat into the wooden chair and started drawing out lines in ink. Cluster of lines, five per cluster. The base. She had no pre-made sheets, so she had to make her own. It wasn't too much of a bother at all, but it took for time. She made many, more than she would likely need today, in order to keep some on hand should she one day need one quickly.

When she had a small pile of thirty sheets, she took one and started drawing notes.

The first one was simple, perhaps already known to some who would preuse them: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. The basic notes. From these notes, everything could happen. The young minds would need to learn how to read and use these, first of all, before embarking any deeper into the world of music, and instruments.

...They would need instruments, though, it occurred to her belatedly. This was likely to be a little more complicated – perhaps something Allysia and Elizabeth would be able to help with. The resourcefulness of the former never failed to surprise her, and the latter... well, she still had much to learn about the young bard.

Then, she embarked onto simple melodies, easily recreated by beginners. She'd likely whispered them to mortals, a long time ago, when the world was still young, and now that circle started again – a violin piece, a flute piece, and a piece for the piano came to live under the goddess' pen. If anything, they could serve as examples until instruments could be found. Sturdy ones for small, clumsy fingers... or maybe bigger fingers as well. Who could tell what the future might bring ?

To spread her art once more, to whisper inspiration at the ears of mortals once more...

The next three sheets were the same base instruments, but more complex melodies. And she continued, writing down notes amazingly quickly, making melodies on the fly and remembering some that had lingered in her memory, only waiting to be awoken again.

Echo continued that pattern for hours, until she had 5 sheets for every instrument. This would be enough to start out, she decided – after all, her children would be home soon, if the clock on the wall was accurate.

She'd better get ready for them – she made three piles, one for each instrument, then made it into one, with the base scale on top. Hopefully, they would wind up useful for her friend.

((Note – some of the musical terms in this post might be wrong, and I apologize. I learned a whole different set of words and notions, being french. If I did mess anything up, please let me know and ill correct myself.))

Honey, Im Home ?

Thabara
User Image„Echo?” Nergal called out softly, as he knocked against the door of her music room. Too quietly, it would seem like to a stranger, if they didn't know of truly exceptional sense of hearing of the person approached.

He hadn't found her in the commons of their joined quarters, nor in the gardens or resting in the bedroom. The bath had been unlocked and empty, so naturally this was the next stop he'd made. He did not wish to disturb her, though, should she be occupied. If there was no reply, he'd check the kitchen next, and then …

She might be out, of course, he hadn't quite considered that. Their quarters seemed unusually quiet, at the very least.

It was to a slightly surprised expression that the door opened - she knew the children elsewhere, with Alto most likely, and so she had been certain that she was alone. She had been, until a few minutes ago.

"Well." She leaned against the doorframe a bit, smiling. "Did hell freeze over ?" It was rare to see this face around anymore. "Do you mind coming in here ? I am not quite done turning the instruments yet..."

Thabara
User ImageHe blinked with obvious confusion, before he replied: „Hell … has not yet been re-” Oh. A figure of speech, he recalled, interrupting himself before things would take a turn for the embarrassing too soon. Behind him, a muffled laughter could be heard.

His attire was formal, even more so than usual, a surefire sign that he must have returned but recently from … somewhere. He nodded to Anekbah, who was waiting in a few steps' distance, carrying a bundle in her arms. „Wait here,” he instructed the demoness.

Curiously he peered into the room past Echo. He'd never been in there, actually, not since it had been made. It was her room, her private refuge, and being invited in there was to him like … Well, it did leave him with somewhat of an awkward feeling. At least neither her instruments nor her note sheets were bound to hiss and then flee from him. The cats' greeting had been, as usual, less than friendly.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The demoness was not the only one to be amused - there was a playful grin on Echo's face as she turned around to go back inside, her tail of strings lazily drawing back and forth with the swaying of her hips as she walked.

It would not have been beyond her to have done it on purpose. She certainly knew him enough to know better than for him to actually get the other meaning of that statement.

The inside of the room was... chaotic was perhaps putting it nicely. Paper all over the desk, most of all, but thankfully nothing on the floor. Echo rarely put things on the floor... it was a bad idea with cats involved. She sat in the chair further back, hutching over her violin once more.

"Were were you ?" She asked, curiosity evident in her voice. The goddess had, apparently, picked up on the formal attire. He rarely wore things like that when he just came out of his realm, though she had to admit he certainly looked good in those robes.

Thabara
User Image„To Falcata's home world,” he replied, after diligently having drawn the door shut behind himself. „The land of her birth, Mot. A most interesting place.” He fell silent all too quickly, missing out on some of the curiosity displayed and quite unaware his love might actually be interested in what he'd been doing. Instead he took an intrigued look around, his gaze finally coming to rest on the violin she'd picked up.

Yes, same as usual.

"Well ?" She asked again, tilting her head to look at him. "What was it like ?" It certainly must have seen better days... But then, what had be spared the unraveling of the influence ? Nothing, as far as she knew. Not even Yggdrasil. It had certainly looked decayed in places when she had went.

"You have to tell me these things, you know." She scolded him, lightly. "Or I will make a rather lousy queen, no ?" Her tail tapped toward one of the few chairs that was not covered with papers, instruments, or other object, indicating he probably should sit.

Thabara
User ImageHe would probably simply have remained standing, if she hadn't pointed out the one chair which didn't serve as a deposit for the tools and results of her creative processes. Nergal gathered his dreads before he took seat, the rustling of the stiff fabric of his robes accompanied by the faint clicking of bone against bone. This was why he prefered chairs without a backrest, less of a risk to sit down on his own hair. The wings, thankfully, never were an issue. He let go of his hair, taking a moment to smooth out the fabric of his garment and rearrange the sash draped over his shoulders. His seat seemed a little too small for his grand shape, but he refrained from shifting around on it.

„True,“ he agreed, relenting to her argument all too willingly. „Falcata – she did in no way exaggerate her reports. Necropolises the size of the towns of living, true cities of the dead. The immense knowledge they have collected in all things sepulchral, their skill in preparing and preserving the bodies for their last journey … It is unparalleled in this time and age, I believe. Much of their records was destroyed, but enough of their Elders survived to restore them. Even if not …“ There was a decidedly smug expression upon his face for a moment. „I can still call upon and question the ones that did not survive.“

He rested his hands in his lap, pale fingers intertwining. „I daresay, overall it went rather well. They are necromancers, their 'Elders', having survived millenia past their appointed time of death. But as they treat my domain with utmost respect, I find them to be … rather agreeable.“ He seemed a little perplexed for a moment, about this statement of his own.

He paused, looking up at his beloved. It was rather hard to overlook the fact that he was quite excited. „Worldwalkers used to come to their fortresses all the time. I believe that place may turn into a stronghold of mine. Once the Sky has been restored, teachings could spread from there, and it could become a destination for pilgrims …“ His voice trailed off, as if he'd just remembered about something.

„Their architecture is quite impressive as well … In fact one of their master builders chose to follow me to this world, once he's taken care for someone to take over his place and responsibilities. Would there …“ Oh, he loathed asking her for a favor immediately after his return, but it was hard to get a hold of himself, excited as he was. „Would there be a way to borrow Allysia from you for a while? Where might I find her?“

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Her glance returned to the violin as he started to speak, and it would have been easy for anyone unfamiliar with the goddess to think she was not paying attention. Her ears, however, betrayed otherwise, perked straight up with obvious interest. Her strongest sense was hearing, after all, and it went without saying that he had much of her attention even without eye contact.

But the time he was done, however, those bright blue eyes were looking at him again, curiosity and interest shining brightly in them. "At least there is a way for that knowledge to be recovered..." It sounded like a very drastic loss indeed. Hundred of years of knowledge, if not more...

His last question had her hands finally leave the instrument, fingers going to tap her chin slightly. "Allysia... Well, she stays in a house at the outskirt of town, but if she isn't there, then Xing would probably know where she is." Allysia was almost constantly moving, wherever she was needed, but the Koiso survivors seemed to at least loosely stick together.

Thabara
User Image„A lot of knowledge must have been lost, everywhere,“ he agreed, meeting the gaze of her cerulean eyes, „if even the Pantheon's very own library has suffered this badly.“

Knowledge, Nergal was very much aware of it, was among the few things he had to offer to the living, and to strike bargains with his fellow deities. It would not be given easily, and certainly not freely. He would need to find those worthy to serve as his sibyls, oracles of the dead, a necromanteion would needed to be built …

Well, that was essentially what they were talking about right now, anyway.

„Allysia's efforts in securing and mapping the catacombs have been invaluable. After the Day of the Dead, a number of designs and construction plans were presented to me – which I believe must have been at least partially her work – with a daring idea: To fully restore the catacombs, and to tear down the remnants of the old cathedral to build a new temple upon its foundations.“

„Only … I admittedly was not very fond of the designs …“ He admitted sheepishly. He had been presented with the possibility to finally have a temple of his own, a new one, and he had not liked the way it looked.

But … it had simply seemed too airy, too light, with spires striving to meet the heavens instead of a focus down. It just hadn't sat right with him.

„I would very much like to introduce her to the architect from Mot, see what they may come up with if they join forces …“

„How have you fared, my Love? You look well,“ he couldn't help but note, not without a pang of guilt.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The movements of her hands stopped, all of sudden, and she looked up again to look at him, tilting her head. There was a number of possibilities for that gesture - had this whole thing been her idea and she had been mad as it's rejection ?

...But then she just laughed, and she shook her head.

"Crazy woman." As if she didn't have enough to do already. But then, if Allysia had enough resources, she might as well be wanted to rebuild everything that had ever existed. "I cannot say I am too surprised."

"Good." She answered to his latter question, shrugging a little. Nothing that would really interest him... or seem grand compared to what he was doing, really. So she left it at that.

Open foot, insert mouth, perhaps ?

Thabara
User Image„Well?“ it was his turn to ask now, quirking one hairless brow. „A day here, to my knowledge, still has some twenty four hours. While day and night may be absent, time is certainly not. You must have spent these many hours, somehow.“ He seemed amused, but at the same time honestly interested.

Every syllable spilled by her lips was like music, and even if she were to tell him 'only' of their children's antics, he could have listened to it endlessly. He was missing out on her life during his absence, and on their life as well – he was painfully aware of it. So it was his honest intention to catch up on it, however little, even if only through her words.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show....Indeed.

"Well...." She finally put the instrument aside, gently laying it back into it's case as if it had been a priceless artifact, and not the mortal-made instrument it was in reality, a thoughtful expression on her features as she tried to remember what had happened ever since he had been gone again. "Oh, I have seen Cosine again. She wishes to see you when you are able." And she'd nearly forgotten. Drat.

"Crys... is better at cooking than I am." Drat. That had stung more than a little bit, really. "She makes a mean hot chocolate, let me tell you. With someone watching over her, of course. Kios... went on a mad chase for parchment for some reason." She rose one eyebrow at that statement, clearly a little confused (and perhaps even thinking he might have something to do with it). "He would not tell me anything about it. He's starting to get out a little more, and he has seen Karaskis and Tajnevaki recently..." She did not mind that, not at all, as long as their youngest did not bother them with his presence. "Soto is... well, himself. He wears a key braided in his hairs, it's adorable." She grinned. It had been a little hard not to laugh when she'd seen that, and especially now that Nergal wore ornaments at the ends of his dreads... It was clear as to where that might have come from.

She still needed to give her little guardian the key to the music room for safekeeping, after all.

Thabara
User ImageHe listened intently, seeming almost mesmerized by the report of the daily goings on. To Echo … they might seem like nothing special, perhaps, but with the restoration of his realm he had very much left his 'normal life' behind. He nodded at the mention of Cosine, taking note of her request. He knew that she was still out and about, of course, and was aware that she and Ankou had moved together. But it had been quite a while a while since he'd last met her personally, even longer since they'd had a chance to just … talk. „I shall, as soon as possible,“ he promised.

The mention of Crys' cooking skills made him smile. He still recalled his first attempts of trying to figure out Aislin's gas stove, almost setting his- no, her hair, actually, aflame in the process. Their daughter's skills were probably better than both of her parents' combined, then. He'd never quite gotten the hang of preparing anything but coffee. Perhaps he could teach her, later …

„I believe I am to blame for Kios' quest,“ he admitted. That the boy was going such lengths to please him, was astounding and incredibly touching the same. „It is a good thing, I think, that he is going out more now. His … 'invisible friends' are with me now, after all, and I believe it is the company of those still alive that he should seek, and his fellow deities.“ His large wings shuffled a little uneasily. Right, giving advise in how to bring up the children when he was barely around …

„Hair ornaments, hm?“ His hands unclasped, to idly trail one of his own long braids, briefly fingering the carved ornament at its end before he let go of it.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I had thought so." Echo admitted, reaching for another instrument - a harp, this time. It looked... different than her other instruments, somehow, as if there was something about it that what more than the others. "You would think it was the most important thing in the world..." Her youngest's antics amused her, certainly. He had found his parchment, as far as she could tell.

"Hm-n." She answered, clearly still a little amused by the thought. "Well, that is certainly a great way to make sure the key doesn't get stolen..."

Thabara
User Image„I did not think he would place such importance on it, honestly,“ he admitted. „I told him it would not have to be actual parchment …“ He decided not to ask if he had actually been successful at finding some – it would be a surprise.

His attention was captured by the harp momentarily. He was familiar with most of Echo's instruments, but this one he'd never seen before.

Or had he?

Something about it seemed eerily familiar, even though he'd never seen it among Echo's collection of instruments. „This is …?“

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. She had been about to say something, but then his reaction made her pause for a moment, looking down at the harp. She had recognized it on sight, of course, even if she had forgotten beforehand.

But Nergal... ?

"...This is a harp. That I've made." She paused for a moment. "Before the fading. It... has been returned to me recently." How it had ended up in the hands of Elizabeth's ancestors... she could not tell. Or rather, could not remember.

Thabara
User Image„I see,“ he said, still unable to take his eyes from the instrument. „Perhaps you had it with you, on those occasions you went to visit my domain …“ That would explain the sense of deja vu he was having, certainly.

„And I do know it is a harp,“ he added jokingly. It was natural for people to assume that the Lord of the Dead could not tell one musical instrument from another, but really, Echo ought to know better. He did not seem the least insulted though, but amused more than anything. And curious. „May I …?“

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."That... might be possible." The nice way to say 'I don't remember'. really. She remembered going down there before, but only loosely. Voices, not images. She could not tell if she had brought the harp or not.

"Well, you never know." She gave him a mock-pout, clearly a little amused herself, before nodding and holding the instrument toward him. It would seem incredibly light compared to what it's size and the heavy wood would subject. The wood itself did not seem to be some kind of common wood, and the string shone a bright gold like the ones of the goddess' own tailstrings. The carvings of the frame where elaborate, still beautiful even if the influence of decay was evident with the cracks there and there. Overall, it had survived the ages in between the fading and current day exceptionally well.

Thabara
User ImageHe was taken by surprise at how lightweight the instrument was, not having expected such judging it by its looks. The look of the golden strings was familiar of course, and he took some time to admire its overall shape and design, fingertips running acrosss the elaborate carvings. How strange, he'd witnessed Echo perform on instruments countless times, but that she also would create them, just as she would create her songs, had never quite ocurred to him. „It is beautiful,“ he said, making no move to hand the artifact back to her. Instead … „How do I hold it?“

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Hm..." The request seemed to take her aback a little, but she stood, apparently to get a better view. "Not so tight." She chided lightly, before moving to guide his hands into the right position. It wasn't that bad - honestly, it was not going to crumble that easily if it survived the influence of decay, but still... This was almost like a piece of history, lost and found. She could not remember making this, could not remember who, if anyone else, had an hand in the harp's creation. As such, it was extremely precious.

"Yes, there, like that..." Echo was apparently in 'teacher' mode now, giving everything a critical eye before finally relenting and letting go.

Thabara
User ImageHe willingly let her to guide his hands – her being the only person allowed to touch him like that – and tentatively ran his fingers across the strings, once he was holding the small harp correctly. He strummed it only once, and very, very carefully. He was well aware of just how sharp his fingernails were, and the last thing he wanted to do, was to accidentally break his Love's most priced possession. He liked the sound, but …

„Hm, I think I would prefer something more heavy,“ he mused, before he shook his head. As if he was ever going to play any instrument for real.

„Thank you,“ he said politely, moving to hand back the instrument to its owner. „I was merely curious.“ The look she'd had on her face for but a moment, when he'd asked how to hold it, had not escaped him. As if she was wondering if she was actually going to get it back in one piece.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I would figure so." She nodded, accepting the instrument as it was (carefully) handed back to her. The lightness made for easy portability, which had probably been the point, but there was also something about the weight of an instrument in one's hand. A tall harp was probably better for him than a hand-held one, also.

...That was worth thinking about.

But then she sat again, tailstrings moving out of the way if they were truly alive, and then...

And then she propped down the harp, and ran her fingers onto the strings, and it was unlike anything he'd ever heard before. And it was then, really, that the harp's true quality became clear.

She had been holding back all this time. All along, perhaps, ever since her rebirth in truth. The sound was clear like the purest crystal, just like if these were not strings, but long stands of pure glass who danced to the whims of no one else than her own.

Thabara
User ImageNergal stilled, listening in quiet awe as Echo began to play her instrument, to truly play it. Deep within, everything stilled as well. For the dead, it was the most wonderful thing they'd ever heard, and it granted them a glimpse of what Paradise might be like, if they ever were to reach it.

All of a sudden, the idea to try out her harp, or to learn an instrument like that even, seemed rather foolish to Nergal, leaving him feel embarassed that he'd even considered it. „I do hope,“ he finally said quietly, a good while after the melody had ended, though part of it still seemed to be resonating in the air, „it will never be you to stand before me and ask to have one of the dead returned. I do not think I would be able to refuse.“

Echo announced, as innocently as possible, she had leaned back into her chair after the tune had ran it's course, one leg folded over the other and clearly very proud of herself indeed. "I know better." He was in procession of someone very dear to her, after all, and she'd make no attempt at getting Melody back.

He seemed safe on that front, at the very least.

Thabara
User Image„In that case,“ he said good naturedly, „I shall consider myself lucky to have you as my ally, and not my foe.“

„Speaking of … I do have gifts for you.“ Anekbah was probably still waiting patiently with the bundle in the hallway, at least he hoped that was the case.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo still seemed rather amused at that comment, but she said nothing else - her ears, however, betrayed her and her innate curiosity quite nicely at their sudden perking at the word 'gift'. What could it be ? And, really, no matter what it was, it was rather sweet of him to think of her when he clearly had many other things to do and think about.

Thabara
He rose from his seat then, to open the door to the hallway. Right, Anekbah was still there, actually succeeding at not looking totally bored out of her mind. It had been very, very hard to resist the temptation to wander off into the kitchen for some snacks. „Anekbah, if you would …?“

The demoness nodded, entering the room with her eyes kept demurely downcast, trying to not look too curiously at the overall … mess. There was no better word to describe the overall state of the goddess' private chamber, really. At least there was nothing on the floor she could accidentally step on with her heavy hooves.

„Precious fabrics, to use at your discretion. The desert tribes of Mot are most skilled at dyeing and weaving.“ She set down the bundle on the … seemingly least occupied area of a nearby table, carefully unwrapping it. It seemed obvious they had been hand-picked for Echo, the colors of their patterns ranging from prussian blue to crimson red, silver, and – most notably – an especially deep and intensive indigo.

„There was a market, a bazaar being held at the second fortress we visited,“ Nergal explained. „It is the place where most survivors gathered, Mot's elders, the desert tribes, the merchants' caravans … I …“ His wings fidgeted uneasily. „I inquired upon which items might be fit as a gift for a Lady, and they …“<

„They were practically all over him,“ Anekbah couldn't help but elaborate. „Imposing on him pretty much everything from precious 'geschmeide' to potions and ointments that are supposed to ensure … fertility and pleasu-“

Anekbah.“ Nergal's tone was quite sharp, a surefire indicator she'd just overstepped her verbal boundaries. Still, she smirked, winked at Echo even. She was a demoness after all …

„They insisted on offering these,“ Nergal said, unwrapping what the bundle of fabrics held within. Small, delicate, translucent vessels in vibrant colors and partially gilded, seeming like an incredibly precious thing in an age most items of glass had been broken. However, the actual gift was not the vessels themselves, but, rather, their content. „Scented oils …“ There was jewelry as well, of silver and lapis.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.It actually took much restrain from Echo to resist the urge to simply tip toe her way and peeking as to what he might possibly be retrieving outside, but she resisted that urge - Music did not accomplish sneaky very well, after all. He would hear her attempt. So instead, she carefully put the harp aside on the stand where all the instruments lay (which, amusingly enough, was one of the few places in the room that actually held some sense of order and was free of random clutter) and then sat again, and waited for Nergal and Anekbah to enter again, the movements of her tail betraying her interest.

Her expression changed to one of open wonder when she saw the fabrics, reaching to touch them. Extremely soft, of course, and well, she already had ideas... Alto had so wished for things to do - his wish was certainly about to come true with all these. He'd have sewing to do for weeks. "These are amazing..."

The mention that came after made her grin, and even return the demoness' wink amusedly. Well, that would have been interesting, to say the least. Even if she doubted such potions would have had an effect on the divine. But if she was lucky, perhaps Anekbah had brought back some anyway. She would have to ask later. When Nergal was not paying attention, preferably.

But still, just imagining the look on his face at that revelation... It was amusing, to say the least.

The small glass vials were revealed, and the goddess handled them like if they were the most fragile things in the world. She could get faint hint of scents without uncapping them, which she was not willing to do right now as she was afraid of spilling the contents. When it rained, it poured, really - perhaps, for Nergal, all these gifts were a way to make up for his lack of presence, and so she allowed it. She appreciated them, of course, such appreciation evident on her expression even as she did not speak a word as she studied the vials, but they were in no mean required.

Thabara
User Image„I shall look forward to see what you do with them,“ Nergal admitted, slightly bowing his head. He'd always enjoyed her choice of gowns, and these colors and patterns … They'd seemed just 'right' for her.

„Julstecca's court employs excellent tailors,“ he suggested, quite oblivious to the fact that one among Echo's own aoidei was fully cappable of designing and sewing garments on his own. It had never occurred to him to ask where what she wore now came from, simply having assumed it must have been a gift from mortal worshipers.

„Do you like these?“ he queried, still requiring audible confirmation even though his lover's enjoyment was quite evident upon her face.

„These oils are quite potent, I was told, fit to be diluted in the water of a bath, or to be blended with odorless oils for a …“ Nergal hesitated, and it seemed quite evident from his embarassed expression that he would have blushed, had his body still been caught in its half-mortal stage. „A massage,“ he finished, finally.

Behind his back, Anekbah was trying her very best to not burst into laughter.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."They are lovely." The very tone of her voice was rather appreciative - there was no doubt howsoever that she quite enjoyed those gifts, as she toyed

Her somewhat confused expression at his pause suddenly turned rather impish when he finished his sentence. That was the Look indeed. The Well, come and get me, hm ? look. The look she had when she had a plan.

And boy, did she ever have a plan now.

"Well, then." One leg folded over the other, her fingers drumming lightly on the side of the desk. "Shall I be expecting a demonstration ?"

If he knew what was good for him, he wouldn't proceed to exit stage left.

Thabara
He knew he was doomed the moment he witnessed that mischievous expression creep onto her face, and frantically tried to think of a way to backpedal, to make what had been said unsaid. Any kind of excuse that would permit him an honorable retreat from this predicament. He would have facepalmed, had there been any way to pull it off in a dignified manner.

„I …“ Nergal stuttered, struggling for words just as much as with his instinct to simply flee the current situation. „I do not know anything about … Certainly Anekbah can-“

„Rest assured, my Lord. It will only be a matter of minutes, no more, to have everything prepared for the two of you,“ the demoness said smoothly and bowed, deep enough to hide her own amused expression. She knew Ishum's anecdotes of situations like these, of course, but it was the first time she herself witnessed her Lord caught in such an embarassing predicament. It was equal parts hilarious and delicious.

When she rose, her expression was schooled to careful neutrality, though there was still mirth dancing in her eyes. „Allow me …“ She murmured, gathering up the delicate vials. Her hips swayed when she left the room, and her tail swished playfully. Still, her departure was rather swiftly, she was eager to have the door closed before her Lord would recover of his current state of stunned speechlessness.

Internally, she already made a list of the required items. Massage oils from the room she shared with Falcata. Towels, because it would be a mess if the sheets were stained. Some bowls for blending, and running a bath certainly wouldn't hurt either. Oh, and candles, definitely. Lady Echo would probably apreciate, and she knew Nergal usually failed horribly at that whole 'romance thing'.

Quietly the demoness hummed to herself.

Zero Dream

But yet, at the same time, she was glad he hadn't simply decided to hightail it out of the situation. She certainly saw little of him as is... and she fully planned to enjoy this, thank you.

She did rise from her chair, turning for a moment to make sure her instruments were all in their respective places before turning again and walking off (their bedroom was so much more suited for the upcoming activity then the music room, after all), making sure to sway her hips just so and only stopping to run the tips of her fingers along his cheek, teasingly, before slipping out.

That was always a sure fire sign that there would be more upcoming if he decided to go for it.

Zero Dream
Allysia had settled at her table many hours ago, and hadn't moved from it ever since. She had much to draw indeed, and way too little time to do it.

Stupid sleep getting in the way.

"...I don't think that's going to work." She mumbled to herself, rubbing out the lines to start that part of the structure over. When she was super-irritated, she balled the paper up and sent it flying. Her cat seriously loved when she did that, but paper was a scarce enough resource now, so she saved such display of dramatics for when she was honest to goodness annoyed.

She reached for the porcelain mug beside her, but one attempt to sip proved it to be empty. Again. And she frowned. "Ellllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy... Im out of coffee again !"

When one had a pocket bard that brewed coffee strong enough to wake up the dead, one used those assets.

Her outcry for help called out, she returned back to her plans, and therefore locked up into her own little world.

Thabara
„This is it,“ Xingyuan said, at the very same moment, right in front of the house, laughing a little as the demand for more coffee was voiced, loud enough to even be heard from the outside. „She's a workaholic, I told you – if things went wholly her way, she wouldn't sleep at all,“ she added, turning to look at those in her company. She … should be used to it by now, Nergal's impressive transformation. And yet, whenever she looked at him, she had to fight the urge to just stand and gape. She still remembered, though, how a frantic, distraught Ishum had brought him to the Avalon way back – bruised and cut all over, and with incredibly lucky to only have ended up with a concussion instead of having his skull cracked open in that fall he must have made. It made her wonder, occasionally, if even Gods had guardian angels at their sides … It was a rare treasure, she knew, to have seen him like this – half mortal still, and vulnerable. Especially as he ocassionally required someone to smack him over the head with said knowledge, because, seriously, even as a god – how could someone be So. Damn. Ignorant?

The man at her God's side, she was far less familiar with. He was short, shorter even than herself, the top of his hairless skull barely reaching her chest. He bore elaborate robes similiar to a priest's attire, though he apparently was a mage of sorts – Nergal had a tendency to turn evasive all of a sudden every single time she breached the topic, as if it was something too embarassing for him to talk about – and set into the old man's forehead was a juwel, like a black marble. In the Pantheon, this had caused for him to be mistaken for a host several times, something they'd all found to be hilarious to no end. With the sole exception of Nergal, of course.

„Well,“ Nergal said, looking down upon the short, Asian woman who seemed to have spaced out a little. Yet again. „Am I supposed to knock?“ Ishum had found her for him, as he himself had had no idea where she lived, or what she did nowadays. He had been too embarassed to confess this to Echo … But his Love had been right, the survivors from Koiso seemed to stick together like glue, having formed their own little comune. If you found one of them, you'd found them all.

„Erh, no,“ Xing said hastily, blushing. „Sorry. Just a moment.“ Immediately she turned to knock, wondering what Ally would say she'd brought a god to her doorstep? And Elizabeth? Both were familiar with Lady Echo of course, but Nergal certainly was a wholly different beast.

Zero Dream
And then there was a knock on the door. The group amassed at the front door was pretty lucky to begin with that the architect even heard it. When Allysia worked on something, well... It was rather hit or miss weither one could get her attention or not.

She stretched a bit as she rose from her seat, stepping lightly toward the door, wondering just who it might be. It was a little late for it to be Echo, she knew from experience. When she opened the door, the first person she saw was Xing.

"Hey th-"

The second person she saw was Nergal, and she literally choked on whatever words were coming on. "Lord... is there anything I may aid you with ?"

Gods on her doorstep. She probably must have seen everything by now.

Thabara
„Well, first of all,“ Nergal said almost too amiably, „how about invitint us in?“ He was amused by the half-elf's reaction, there was no denying it. He had yet to grow tired of the start it seemed to give people every time they laid eyes upon him. „Secondly, if you would ask 'Elly' to prepare some more coffee …? Everything else we can talk about while enjoying a cup.“

Zero Dream

"Ah-- Yes, of course--, I, um..."

Finally, Allysia seemed able to apply her brain to mouth filter and she just shut up, opening the door wide enough to allow everyone to enter (through, really, Nergal would be a tight fit, but none of her fault, really.)

...Come to think of it, the half-elf was not even certain she owned a chair big enough.

"Ellllllllllyyyyyyy." She called again. "Make.... A lot of coffee, please. We have company."

She had the very distinct feeling she was going to need it more than ever.

Thabara
Nergal had to duck a little, in fact, to make it inside. Definitely something for her to keep in mind later, make temple doors large enough for actual deity to pass through …

He inspected the house with idle interest, Xing and Hoht'hose trailing after him. It was not too different from the house he and Echo had shared, not too long ago. That precious, quiet time, when they had been courting one another tentatively, before all hell had broken lose, demons, grigori, apocalypse, and all …

Zero Dream
...Down to the clutter that had taken over Echo's half most of the time.

That... seemed to be a quick of the creative mind, really. Or perhaps alike people attracted each other.

Allysia rolled up the plan she had previously been working on in order to clear the table. It looked to be sketches for something... very large indeed. Nowhere near a house, really. Something much bigger than that. But the paper was rolled before anyone could really get a good look of the details, and she set it aside with the rest of the work in progress.

"I... fear I don't think I own chairs big enough..." She made a face, but then belatedly noticed Hoht'hose. He'd... been hidden by Nergal. Literally.

Thabara
„Any chair will do,“ Nergal said reasuringly, „even a stool.“ He'd actually prefer the latter, come to think of it, as he seemed to be constantly warring with arm- and back rests. „I asure you, it is not going to break under my weight.“

The striking similarities between the interior of Allysia's dwelling and Echo's room did not escape him, and it was amusing him to a certain degree. He was thankful though, that both of them did not use the floor as a deposit for their drafts and designs, and the tools of their craft.

„Allow me to introduce,“ he said, once he took notice that the architect's eyes were resting curiously on the guest he'd brought along. „This is Master Hoht'hose, a mage and scholar from Mot, and a most skilled and gifted architect himself.“

In the background, Xing quirked a brow. So, the old man came from the same place actually as Falcata? That would make him, very, very likely, a necromancer, which certainly explained some of Nergal's odd behaviour. The realisation almost made her laugh out loud.

„Pleased to make your acquaintance,“ Hoht'hose said simply, but not unfriendly, giving their host a brief nod. It was hard to overlook the fact she had elfin blood running in her veins, but she seemed so young. „And I'm not that great an architect. I stick to one style, which would best be described as … monumental.“

The ancient necromancer sat down without having been offered a seat, but really, his thin old legs were sorely in a need for some rest. „I have mostly been doing tombs, lately.“ For the last three thousand years or so. He could never quite recall how long it had been since the last of the Great Fortresses had been finished.

Zero Dream
Stool, stool stool stool... She had a stool somewhere in this mess, didn't sh-

Ah !

"Here we go." She mumbled to herself, reaching out and pushing aside a few boxes before she was finally able to remove the stool that had acted as platform to boxes full of paper and compasses, among other things, and finally setting in place.

Good lord, she was having a god sit on a stool. That had to count as blasphemy in some spheres. As for the half-elf herself, well, the table seemed to serve as good enough perch for now, leaving the scarce few chairs to the others instead.

"Likewise." She answered with a nod of the head. Monumental and tombs, hm ? She certainly didn't do monumental much, and tombs even less, the closest having been the catacombs which where more... restoration than anything else. "You know, with so many architects per square foot, it's starting to look like something needs building."

Hey, she had been the only one around these parts as far as she knew.

Thabara
Nergal gathered his robes, and sat down upon the seat offered to him with utmost dignity. The furniture creaked precariously, but apparently was able to stand up to his weight, however much that might be.

„Buildings fit for the dead, rather than the living,“ Hoht'hose confirmed with a nod. „Most of the time. The engineering and design of canals, wells and cisterns would be a more practical application of my skills. And a crucial one as well – Mot is a desert country. But yes, something needs building indeed.“ The old man glanced at Nergal.

Nergal inclined his head. „Shortly after the Day of the Dead, complete maps of the catacombs were presented to me, and with them … designs for a temple.“

Zero Dream
Allysia winced a bit at the creaking coming from the stool, but it seemed to hold. Thankfully. She wasn't looking forward to telling Echo she'd sent the Lord of the Underworld flat on his a** in her workshop. She'd probably just laugh like hell, but the half-elf much rather not have to face the matter.

"I am not very versed in tombs, no. Or with building underground. The catacombs weren't so bad, there was enough left standing that it was mostly a matter of strengthing the existing structure and clearing off the tunnels... I've made houses mostly. Most of the buildings in this town are mine now, beside a few that managed to stay upright or only needed base repairs for stability."

Not boasting at all, no.

"I've made a bridge or two..."

Xing and Nergal would know that 'a bridge or two' was one hell of an understatement.

"Holy sh-"

"Well." Allysia chimed. "Here's our coffee !"

Elizabeth, for her part, had frozen on top of the stairs, holding a tray with cups rather perilously. "What the..." She looked like she'd seen a ghost. Literally. She looked pretty... Shakespearean, really, with that hat and her clothing style. Clearly from some other world or other.

"I warned you we had visitors, Elly. Forgive her, she's not really used to Daily Life With Deities yet." As if she was, of course. The half-elf rose up to take the tray from her housemate. "This is Elizabeth. Bard that I think should relocate in a coffee shop because she brews the best damn coffee I've tasted." Allysia grinned, moving back down to set the tray on one of the side tables where it was easily within reach of anyone who cared for some. "Sorry about bothering you again, Elly."

"I-It's fine." Elizabeth answered, apparently not very sure if she was meant to stay or simply go upstairs again. Unfortunately for her, Allysia just took a large glup of the black liquid of her cup and went right back to her tangent.

"Where was I.... ? Oh yes, plans. I remember. I was told it was a little too.... hm, vertically-inclined ?" Allysia cocked a brow, but otherwise did not seem very upset or bothered. She was a professional after all. She'd had refusals much more rude than Nergal's had been. The half-elf rummaged through her papers, then finally found what she was looking for and unrolled her. "There we go." There were a few modifications, done there and there probably out of idle need for perfection, but mostly the major difference was that the spires were indeed gone.

"So I figure I was thinking in the wrong direction, so to speak ?"

Thabara
„Well, there's obviously little use for bridges in the desert,“ Hoht'hose admitted. He already had an inkling that working with this young lady was going to be … interesting, to say the least. „Most of Mot's architecture is rock cut, stonemasonry.“ He was interrupted in his lecture, when the coffee was brought in. It was quite obvious that the young lady who'd prepared the beverage was … unfamiliar with Nergal's imposing figure, to say the least.

„Elizabeth …“ Nergal politely inclined his head, but refraining from making an attempt to smile. Given her expression, this would likely cause her to either flee, or faint on the spot. In any case, the coffee was likely to end up spilled on the floor, something he'd rather like to avoid, thank you. He showed no intention of introducing himself, the woman could probably take an educated guess, especially if she was a bard … Even if not, it was alright to keep the mortals guessing, every now and then.

Pretty much everyone present seemed to breathe a quiet sigh of relief when Allysia went to take the tray from her room mate's shaking hands, though Nergal's brows quickly pulled into a frown when she simply set it aside on a nearby table. She was not going to serve it …?

Xing sighed, and shook her head, leaving her spot where she'd been casually leaning against the wall. Really, this was so typical of her … A genius when it came to the design and construction of buildings, but socially inapt. Not that she actually lacked manners, but most of the time she simply forgot about them. To do so in the presence of a God, however … Well. A good thing she hadn't sat down yet, though that was mostly out of sheer lack of seating acccomodations. She quickly poured a cup for the Lord of the Dead, knowing his taste well enough to not bother with milk or sugar, and shot a disapproving glare in Ally's general direction.

„Indeed,“ Nergal confirmed upon the elfin architect's last question, taking a sip from his cup. „That is indeed a very good coffee,“ he noted towards the bard, before his attention turned back towards Allysia's newest set of designs. „I do not mind an impressive structure above ground, but the focus should indeed be downwards. The souls of the dead do not ascend to Heaven, even though I know that is commonly believed to be the case.“

„I would like to have some tea,“ Hoht'hose announced, mostly to see if he could jolt that poor woman still standing at the bottom of the stairs back into motion, before he bent forward for a better look at the plans. The height of the table wasn't very helpful, considering his short stature … „What materials were you going to use?“

Zero Dream
Unfortunately for Xing, her likely very effective glare of doom was completely wasted on Allysia's one track mind. Her heart was at the right place, really, and she was polite enough in voice interactions, but she was [i]far from the best choice as an hostess. Or a model wife really. Arastor, somehow, had never seemed to care.

"Tea, right, one moment !" And so Elizabeth seemed to all too eagerly bolt right back from where she'd came from. Apparently she had made her educated guess right there.

Probably felt along the lines of Holy s**t Scary.

"Well, see, here's where I screwed up. Oh well." Abandon religious beliefs, ye who enter here. She seemed to notice the diminutive necromancer's problems, and a careful kick under the table revealed a sturdy crate he could stand on. If that didn't do, well, she was not propping him on her shoulders, thank you. This was weird enough as is.

"The supplies are pretty limited here." Allysia admitted. "I guess it depends on where it's going to be built ? These plans can probably be easily altered to fit... Mot you callled it ? What kind of rocks are there in there ?" At least she was not afraid of showing her ignorance of certainly things. "And, really, for the underground part, you will likely know much better than I would on what would work best, mister." Really, she'd refrained on saying his name for the sole reason that she was likely to butcher it horribly. That always did a great impression on co-workers. Not.

Thabara
„Right here,“ Nergal answered immediately, „atop the catacombs, in place of the old cathedral. Though I would prefer for the main structure, the true temple, to be underground. There was a fairly large hall depicted on the maps. Is it a natural cave?“ He inquired. He had never passed through this particular area of the catacombs, possibly because there had been no ladder at the time, or perhaps the entrance had caved in.

„Sandstone is what we work with, for the most part,“ Hoht'hose explained. He climbed upon the crate with an indignified huff, but was rewarded with an incomparably better look at the plans. „Though I heard, you have this … artificial stone, called 'concrete'?“ Given, Nergal had not seemed overly fond of it (and still wasn't, judging by his impressive scowl), but he himself was quite fascinated by it.

Zero Dream
"You mean this one, Lord ?" She pointed at the hall in question. "Yes, that is a natural cave. It's huge." Eyebrow cocked up for emphasis. "There are a few around the area. Im not sure if they all used to be linked to the catacombs, but we opened access to them anyway, just in case. These... could very easily house massive structures." She... hadn't thought about that before. Not like that.

Clearly, she needed more coffee. A long sip later and she was right back on track.

"Yeah, there's concrete, true." She admitted, but even Allysia could see the massive do. not. want. in Nergal's expression. "The rock down there though... It's beautiful. Im no geologist, I don't know how workable it is, but ill't be a shame to cover that in concrete. One of my current projects uses it, through, if you are curious I could show you how it's like and how we work with it ?" Attempt at diversion : engaged.

In the meanwhile, the opening and closing of the door above announced the return of the bard, who had at least managed to regain some amount of composure. Her movements were a little stiff, but at least she was not shaking like a leaf. The air was heavy, almost choking, really, just like when her mother had died. She was not sure if she liked this.

"We, hm... only had green tea. It's what I usually drink. It that allright ?" Elizabeth set the kettle aside on another of the side table, and poured out a cup. Well, at least one of them had gotten the memo, right ?

Thabara
„That is indeed the one in question, yes.“ Nergal nodded slowly. „If there are natural caves in the area, that would well explain the presence of the Shrine in the first place. That part of the catacombs seemed … oldest. Much older, with certainty, than the cathedral itself.“ It had likely been built on top of another, more ancient structure, he thought, his attention drifting off a little. Just as he planned now to make use of its remaining foundations and build atop these. Given the cathedral's untypical location at the very outskirts of the town, he wouldn't be too surprised, in fact, if it were to turn out that … Well. Mortals usually liked to have their places of worship at the very center of town.

Usually.

Unless they were related to death.

„Hrm, I wont be able to judge its usefulness until I've seen what can be done with it – I'll be taking you up on that invitation, young lady – but I take it it doesn't have the beauty of living rock?“

„It's pretty ugly,“ Xing confirmed, „and usually hidden by using other materials for a facade.“

Hoht'hose nodded. Now, there was an option. But obviously better not to be discussed in front of Nergal, so he decided to drop the matter, for now. Still, a stone that could be cast in ways similar to metal, that was … fascinating.

„That is quite alright,“ the ancient necromancer said to Elizabeth, gratefully accepting the cup the bard offered, „thank you.“

„Now, that cave. How deep down is it, actually? How big exactly?“ He did not wait for an answer, but instead began to shuffle through the maps and layouts. „Because, frankly, if it's too deep down … It obviously needs to be accessible to a certain degree.“ He finally found the schematics in question and did a quick calculation, tonelessly muttering numbers to himself.

„That is why there is going to be a structure above ground as well,“ Nergal said dryly. „I am aware this many stairs are going to be a problem for some.“

„A practically thinking deity, now there's something new ...“ Hoht'hose grinned, and turned back to the schematics. „Hrm, yes, that should be more than possible …we could actually build within the cave … something akin to the underground city of Parthan … Young Lady, can I have a pencil and some paper please? And while we're at it, would there be something else you want, my Lord?“

Nergal drained his cup before he spoke, knowing full well its contents would be cold by the time he was finished. It was quite a list he delivered.

He was going to be one hell of a client to satisfy.

Zero Dream
Allysia had been about to answer, but before she could even get a word out there, there was a pint-sized necromancer all over her plans.

Sigh.

She said nothing else, however, and simply provided him with the pencil and paper asked (as well as erasers and sharpener... they would probably need them quite badly at this point.)

Elizabeth, for her part, finally cracked a smile, but she was still quick to flee the scene, once again.

Thabara
It wasn't before long that a pair of bare feet quietly followed Elizabeth's trail up the stairs, accompanied by barely a sound but the rustling of the stiff silk robes, and even that … seemed muffled, distant.

Xing had quickly offered to take care of getting some more coffee, once the supply had run dry all too quickly, but Nergal had politely declined, he'd take care of this himself, thank you. Truth be told, sitting on that stool was awkward, and its stability questionable. What more, once the two architects had started to put their heads together (butting them occasionally – metaphorically speaking of course – considering their vastly different cultural heritage), the seemed to exist in a world of their own, either ignoring him or waving him off when he tried to bring in ideas of his own. God or no, he was no architect, and shouldn't meddle with matters he didn't understand, thank you. They'd made that unmistakably clear, their double-glare leaving him speechless at their insolence.

Here was hoping he'd actually like whatever the odd pair might come up with …

The kitchen was easily found – the one door in the narrow hallway being wide open – and he ducked in, bearing the empty coffee pot in his hands. His wings, their span too wide to comfortably fit through the door, were not a problem, slipping through the wall to the left and right as if it was nonexistant. He quickly made himself accustomed with the surroundings – the container with the ground coffee was still on the counter top, and thankfully he was familiar with electric kettles.

Zero Dream
He was not the only one in that kitchen, it turned out.

Elizabeth, however, did not seem to notice him at first, his steps being too quiet. Musically inclined as she might be, the bard did not process an overly strong sense of hearing. She was sitting by the table, busying herself with preparing something - most likely soup for the evening meal. Heaven knews Allysia never thought about it. Elizabeth wondered how the half-elf even remembered to eat before she had come to live here.

It was only when the container of coffee was moved that she realized someone else was here - but then, the room had seemed to get... colder, as well - and finally looked up.

"May... I help you with something ?"

Thabara
„That wont be necessary, thank you,“ Nergal replied idly, as he filled the kettle with water and flipped the switch. He then looked about for a spoon or somesuch that could be used for measuring. Usually these would be kept conveniently- He popped the lid of the container open, peering at the contents. Yes, there was a measuring spoon right there alright, half buried in the ground coffee. „Us divinities are not entirely helpless when it comes to mundane tasks such as the one of preparing coffee.“ He smiled, and his voice was slightly tinged with irony.

„As I came to understand, you were the one to return Music's harp to her?“ It was rare for him to attempt a conversation like that, but she had no means of knowing of course. Which, maybe, made him feel a little less awkward about it.

Zero Dream
"Ah... Alight." The room was colder, she was certain of it. It hadn't been so a minute earlier. The irony either escaped her completely, or she did her best not to react on it.

Probably option b.

That question came out of the left field completely, and Elizabeth blinked. "Yes... I have."

Thabara
Nergal nodded, clasping his hands behind his back while there was nothing to do for them. He was seemingly relaxed, yet at the same time managed to keep his formal posture.

„I would like to thank you again, then, for your dedication, and that of your ancestors. Thanks to it, I was finally able to listen to her performing to the fullest of her abilities. All her past performances pale in comparison to it, except, perhaps, for one … in which she only used her voice …“ Giving back to him his Name, and the ability to manifest in physical form other than his realm.

He blinked, realizing he had been drifting off, mentally. „The Lady Echo is,“ he offered in a manner of explanation, „my betrothed, my beloved wife-to-be.“ Judging by the bard's confused expression, she might not have known, and it certainly wasn't unlike Echo to simply forget about mentioning details like this …

„I would like to know,“ he offered, „your family name, at least.“ The exact names of her ancestors would be better, considering his abilities still lacked, but he had no illusions – whatever records of the bard's family tree had existed, they probably had been destroyed during the Age of Destruction, and then, Gehenna's incubation. „Such dedication throughout Ages is rare, and I would like to honor it. Reward it even, mayhaps, if it lies within my abilities.“

The water had long since begun boiling, but the Lord of the Dead hadn't noticed yet.

Zero Dream
...Well, if the bard's expression had anything to do with it, she had not been made aware of that. And neither had she ever expected it. At least, she knew better than to ask just exactly how it all worked. Even if he hadn't been a god, she would not have. That was beyond rude, really.

"Atory, Lord." She answered his own question instead. She bore her mother's family name, like every woman in her family tree, so it was accurate. She perked a little bit. "Your water is ready." The bard reminded, gently, gesturing toward the whistling kettle.

Thabara
Atory. He nodded slowly, and – unbeknownst to the bard – commenced a quick, cursory survey; browsing the multitudes of souls Within. There were several bearing the Name, both male and female. But it was impossible to tell if they were related to Elizabeth's bloodline in any way, not while still maintaining his presence here in this world.

„I see,“ he said, simply. „I wonder, was your family promised anything for their service? Or was it simply … faith?“ While the latter certainly would be most flattering for Echo, the first would definitely save him from the hassle of having to come up with a reward of sorts on his own. He, quite honestly, severely lacked the imagination for such things.

He went on to prepare the coffee quite expertly, apparently not taking notice when he accidentaly brushed against the exterior of the kettle once, even though it certainly had to be scaldingly hot. „Another question,“ he added after a little while of silence, pointing at the tin in which the coffee was stored. „These grounds, where did you get them?“ There was, hopefully, more of the kind where this had come from.

Zero Dream
The question caused Elizabeth to pause, brows furrowing slightly in though. "Im... not sure." She eventually admited. "At least why others wanted to do it. My mother... gave the harp to me, when she died. Her dying wish was that I do what she could not do and return it." Well, there was perhaps the explanation of her slight unease with him - even now, she wasn't looking at him, not directly. "She told me about it when I was a child, but I've only seen it for the first time the night she died. I didn't do it for any reward, I did it because it was what she wished me to do - and... I was curious." She went quiet then, when she had realized she was rambling. What would a god care of the tale of a mortal, anyway ?

His last question made her perk again. "Ally gets them, I think, from the market downtown. There is a stand where I get my tea, and I think she gets it somewhere near that."

Thabara
„I see,“ he said, once more, slightly inclining his head. Things would not be this easy, then. There was a distinct difference to be made, between family traditions to be upheld, and True Belief. „I hope your curiosity, at least, has been satisfied.“ He gave a polite smile, one that did not reach his eyes, before he bent over a little to take in the scent of the freshly brewed coffee. For just a moment, there was True Emotion mirrored upon his features, an expression of pure bliss. This wasn't coffee that had been kept in vacuum containers for the past few years, this was fresh. Someone was actually going through the hassle to grow these beans, process them correctly, roast them …

His daughter had told him of the market, speaking of it with … Well, with any other person the term would have been 'bright eyes'. In any way, her enthusiasm had been quite evident. He should go there with her, he thought. Her acute olfactory senses would lead him straight to the right stalls certainly.

„Is there any message you would like to give,“ he asked, as he poured the coffee into the thermos standing by, „to your mother?“ A small favor granted, for the invaluable service rendered – be it in faith or otherwise.

Zero Dream
Again, his question took her off guard, and for a moment the bard just plain did not answer. But then, she finally did. "Tell her... that I did what she asked of me." A rather predictable request, really. "And... that she needs not to worry for me. I will be alright."

She was starting to get an inchling of what she had to do, at any rate. She had to rebuild her life the best she could, and it might as well be here. She had nothing awaiting her back... home.

Still, she inclined her head. "Thank you." Well, at least she was learning on the faith front, if this was a sign.

Thabara

„I will do that. It is but a small boon granted for the service rendered. It was a pleasure to have been talking with you, Elizabeth Atory.“ A slight nod, one last greeting before he left, something about the picture seeming terribly wrong considering the brightly colored thermos he held. „Even if you have only followed your mother's request, and your own curiosity up til now, I pray that you will find true faith – here where the gods dwell.“

He bowed out, had actually no choice but to, lest he wanted to risk hitting his head at the too low door frame, striding down the hallway with large steps. He was quite content with himself – after all, he was obviously getting better at this whole 'conversation' thing, right?

Clear Air After The Storm

Thabara
Amazingly enough, he was still around, the next morning – Nergal, that was. Not where one might expect him though, holding court on his seat in the commons, but rather having joined his young daughter in the kitchen. He rarely ventured into that room, usually not unless he fancied preparing his own coffee. Which was what he was doing now, while listening to Crys in all earnesty as she explained to him the finer details of preparing proper pancake batter.

Zero Dream
Echo had, amazingly and perhaps somewhat predictably, slept through the events of the night before - only to awaken now, lazing a bit and sliding into one of her dresses before coming out of the bedroom. A small horde of cats followed, mewing and purring, rubbing at her ankles, before they did suddenly disperse when she came close to the kitchen.

Uh.

Poor unsuspecting Echo continued forward, entering the kitchen proper, looking very much like someone who had just woken up and not taken a shower yet.

She did, however, stop dead when she saw the scene unfolding in front of her. Well, that was unusual.

She did blink, once, twice, almost comically, as if her mind was still trying to process the fact that Nergal was in their kitchen in a time where there wasn't usually a Nergal about, and even less in their kitchen.

Thabara
As soon as she heard her mother had gotten up (it was hard to miss, really, what with her furry little horde of 'followers' expressing their joy to see her so vocally), Crys eagerly tried to convince her father that he just had hide behind the door. .

“-and then,“ she was just about to finish her instructions, when Echo stepped into the kitchen, “you come out and say: 'Surprise!'” She flung up her little arms energetically, heedless of the wisk dripping with batter she was still holding, causing it to end up pretty much everywhere.

“Good morning,” the Lord of the Dead greeted his queen, wiping a small drop of pancake batter from his nose before he proceeded to pour himself a coffee. He thought for a moment, and then offered the cup of steaming black brew to her. He knew she very much preferred tea, but really, she looked like she could use a coffee.

“It's 'surprise',” Crys insisted, waving around her whisk. “'Surprise'. You're doing it all wrong.”

Zero Dream
She did accept the cup wordlessly, still puzzling as to just what was going on right here. She had a nice steak of pancake batter on her cheek thanks to her daughter, but she did not even seem to notice.

"Good morning." She did finally reply, proving that she at least was some resemblance of coherent. Echo... had never been much to behold in the first hours of the morning. It took at least a good half hour before she was more... normal.

"Well, you see, my dear." She did step forward, careful not to step on any batter. "It often take multiple explainations for your father to understand things. You will need to keep at it and hope for the best."

...Or maybe not.

Thabara
Too true. It was meant to tease him, just as well to amuse their daughter, but remark hit somewhat of a sore spot after last night. Whatever he'd say, it would likely be just the right thing to utterly cause the current nice mood take a plunge straight to the greatest depths of hell. He was remarkably good at it, he'd noticed at least that much. So he wisely kept his quiet, only taking a sip from his own coffee as he carefully watched over his blind daugher balancing the bowl with the batter to the store.

“Maybe the dead people are making too much noise,” Crys argued, “so he can't hear what we say.” It did make sense, from her point of view. Even living people made an awful lot of noise as soon as there was a large group of them, and there were so many dead people within her dad … She climbed the stool in front of the stove, under the watchful eyes of her parents.

Zero Dream
"That might be possible." Thankfully for Nergal, Echo's attention was currently on her daughter, and she did not seem to question his sudden silence. "Blueberry or strawberry today ?" She asked, taking a peek over the child's shoulder to look at the bowl of batter.

Echo had been quite adamant on that - no using the stove unsupervised for ANY of them, thank you. She was a poor cook, really, but at least she knew safety.

Thabara
“Blueberry.” The A and O for Crys was to be prepared when cooking, and she'd gotten quite good at that. She knew exactly where she'd previously set up the butter, and the ladle, and – most importantly – the frying pan. She'd had her dad help her with the latter, because it really was quite heavy.

Nergal, who'd never seen his daughter cook (oh, he knew full she liked making a mess of batter and dough, but that was about it), watched with amazement. Not once did she spill, or – much more importantly – burn herself, and he found himself wondering just how she could tell when it was time to flip them over. The smell, probably. He wouldn't been able to tell.

His host, Aislin … she'd not been a morning person at all, so her breakfasts had usually been savory, serving as her lunch as well. He would likely be able to pull off somewhat decent fried eggs and bacon, but definitely no pancakes. He didn't have much love for sweet things anyway, and a cup of good coffee had always been enough of a breakfast for him.

For the time being, it was all quiet in the kitchen, except for the sounds of Crys' cooking, and – of course – Echo's wings. But it was a comfortable silence for once.

Zero Dream
Even with that, Echo did watch like a hawk, through. Just in case Crys even needed just the slightest bit of help. She didn't impose herself, but she stood at her daughter's side like a silent (well, as much as Music could actually be silent) guard, absent-mindedly taking a sip from her cup and making a face - only now realizing it was coffee.

She could brew some tea when Crys was done. Or raid the sugar. Lovers they were, but they definitively did not share tastes in hot drinks.

It was starting to smell pretty good in the kitchen right now - so much that some of the most daring cats did have a peek in the kitchen, in spite of the presence of Underworld. But perhaps, more importantly, the spell lured a much bigger kind of cat out of his den. Lament was peeking in as well, quite curious and so far unnoticed.

Thabara
Almost unnoticed. “I'm making pancakes,” Crys announced, without turning her head. She'd heard those bare feet shuffling among the cats' paws. “And I made papa help me,” she added proudly. Why, she didn't even have to tie his braids to the chair this time, as she'd tried the last time her father had been around.

Zero Dream
Indeed, almost. Akakios did pout a bit. It was impossible to slip under Crys' radar. He had managed Echo a few times, when she was distracted, but his sister... it was just plain impossible. Maybe because since she couldn't see she had one less sense to focus on to distract her ?

But then she did continue, and it was a good thing that she couldn't see him, and that no one else seemed to pay attention to him, because he grinned. Just like the cat that ate the canary, and definitively like someone who knew something everyone else didn't. "Can I have some ?" He asked, as angelic as possible, scooting over to sit in one of the chairs.

Thabara
“Of course,” Crys invited him generously. “You never eat much anyway.” That was compared to Soto, of course. She tilted her head slightly, ears flicking a little, but her big brother was nowhere to be heard.

“And papa can set the table,” she decided. After all, he was tallest, and could easily reach even the top shelves of the cupboards.

Nergal looked up from his coffee, seeming a little startled. And, truth be told, except for the cups, and the coffee plunger, he had no idea where anything was, in the kitchen, really.

Zero Dream
"Well, isn't that a nice idea~" Echo was, clearly, completely unreceptive of Underworld's plight. After all, she still was overlooking Crys' cooking. She did look like she was enjoying herself, though. More so than his previous visits, where he had showered her with all soft of gifts.

Akakios, however, did notice, and the look on his father's face was probably one of the most amusing things he had ever seen. One hand went on his mouth in an attempt to stiffle his giggle, and the other started pointing at cupboards. He couldn't say what was were without Crys hearing it, but he could point and hope he'll deduct the rest.

Dad was so silly sometimes.

Thabara
Crys blinked, wondering what was so funny. Clearly, she was missing out on something here, and no one bothered explaining it to her. Hmph!

Nergal gave a grateful nod at his son's wordless hint, beginning to lay out the dishes with as much dignity to it as possible. Which didn't save him from having to look through three drawers before he'd find the cutlery. He put down a plate for himself, though he admittedly wasn't really hungry. But to deny his daughter tasting her pancakes, he knew where that would end. He considered Soto as well, just in case his firstborn would chose to make an appearance.

“Cups,” Crys remarked, deadpan, as she flipped over the last batch of pancakes. The first would have already cooled down, but that couldn't be helped. She didn't want to stand at the stove while everyone else was eating! “You forgot them.”

Their parents were already having that stinky bitter brew Nergal liked so much for some odd reason (and she didn't think tea was much better), but she and Kios needed something to drink too!

Zero Dream
Crys did indeed have a point, even if Kios did eye his father's cup of coffee suspiciously with a look typical of scheming children, but he didn't get to make his move before his father was facing him again. Foiled !

"Don't forget the juice too." Maybe if he was quick enough while dad did that...

"Do you want me to carry the plate ?" Echo asked as the last pancake was flipped. It might be a little heavy for her, and holding a plate while holding a platter full of pancakes... yes, that was a mess waiting to happen.

There was already batter everywhere, no need to add pancakes to that.

Thabara
“Mh,” Crys nodded, hopping down from her stool and dutifully turning off the stove. “Is heavy. I want milk!”

Nergal nodded obediently, resigned to his fate for now. This was … a task for servants, really, but – oddly enough – right now he didn't want for anyone to intrude really.

He fetched two earthen mugs – glassware was still a rarity after the remaining resources had been plundered by Glyph and Glaucon as they sought to fulfill the Crown's request – and filled them according to the kids' wishes. Was there something else … ? He glanced into the fridge, pondering. There, that looked quite like syrup, didn't it? He wasn't entirely hopeless.

Zero Dream
Ah, there ! Lament lunged a bit forward, reaching and sliding the cup toward him. The mystery of what was it that dad always drank was finally going to be solved !

The boy took a sip.... and very, very nearly spit it back out. But he was much better behaved than that, really, so he made himself swallow it. It was all bitter and..... EW ! How did dad drink this ?!

In all his attempt to look like nothing happened, he did forget to return the cup to it's rightful place, still trying to somehow make the taste go away.

Echo took the plate of pancakes and followed her daughter, looking rather puzzled by her son's strange expression.

Thabara
Nergal noticed the expression immediately as he turned, wondering at it but only for a moment, before he took note of his cup's changed position. Wordlessly he put down the juice in front of his youngest, and just as wordlessly he slid his own cup back to its original position.

Zero Dream
And, just as wordlessly, Kios took his cup of juice and almost downed it in one shot.

Echo stilled at watching this, blinking... and then she just started laughing, thankfully after setting the pancakes on the table. Otherwise, she would have been the one to make the mess for once. "I think." She whispered in Crys' ear, so softly that it looked as if only her lips were moving. "That your brother just not realized coffee didn't taste very good..."

Thabara
“Ew,” Crys made, as she climbed onto her chair, saying it more out of principle rather than because she really thought it tasted bad. If Kios didn't like it, she'd sympathize with him. “Be glad you didn't taste the grounds,” she announced, making it quite obvious she'd apparently given both of it a try a while back.

Nergal was slightly startled by Echo's laughter, quite unaware he'd done anything … funny. But he enjoyed the sound of it, like the chime of a thousand silver bells. It had been some time, since he'd last hear her laugh like that, so he didn't question it. With a small, hesitant smile upon his dark lips, he settled down upon his seat.

Zero Dream
Taste the what ?

But then, Crys tasted everything. Better not to ask. At least the apple juice had washed the foul, bitter taste away. Why did anyone drink this willingly ? He had no damn idea.

With her daughter settled and her own laughter subsided (mostly. She still had a giggle every now and then as she remembered the face her son had made), she started to serve up the pancakes. She did fill Sotiris' plate as well, through she was fairly certain the boy was still snoozing. It was a bit early for her little green monster to be wrecking havok.

Thabara
Despite the fact Crys gave pretty much everything a taste at least once, from flowers to crayons, spiders and fungi, her cooking left nothing to be desired – the pancakes were delicious.

What's Up ?

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Something was wrong.

No, not wrong, not really - more like wonderful in a way, but needless to say something was... off.

Mostly because this was actually the longest Nergal had actually been up there, in fact he was right by her side, as they had gone for a walk, just the two of them, after the aoidei awoke to be able to watch over the children.

It wasn't that Echo wasn't happy (oh, she certainly was, given how little she usually saw of him) but she was a little suspicious.

Which was where her plan went into motion. If she found a nice, quiet place, where they would be alone... well, she could try to drag it out of him, so to say.

And it seemed like she had. "Looks like the teahouse over there is empty..." And well, she hadn't had any tea yet.

Thabara
User ImageOne easily might have thought them lovers, that divine couple which strolled through the gardens leisurely side to side, their steps matched perfectly. And sure enough, most of the Pantheon's inhabitants already knew of their relationship, as their offspring had apparently been busy making themselves known. Still, Nergal refrained from holding Echo's hands, or any other such sign of the affection he felt in puplicity. Despite his tentative resolve to do better now when it came to his family, he just couldn't help being … well, himself.

He quietly nodded his agreement to her suggestion, glad to get his bare feet off the lawn. The meadows surrounding the Pantheon were beautiful, but the lush greenery never failed to put him at least slightly at unease – which might be, in hindsight, why his attempts to create a 'place for the lost' turned out to be failure after failure.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. She knew by now that most of his reactions were often subtile - she didn't listen for an answer, but looked instead, moving toward the building when he did nod. It was only a few paces away, and they where there quickly.

The first thing Echo did was, of course, to brew some tea. After she'd gotten started on that, she moved to sit, legs folded carefully, looking a little thoughtful. Well, might as well go for it and hope for the best.

"What happened ?" She asked.

Thabara
User ImageWhile Nergal might be hopeless when it came to social interactions, he still knew his ettiquette, at the very least. When they arrived at the tea house, he strode up the wooden steps first to hold the curtain, so that his beloved could enter unbothered by it. Tien's host had once commented upon his 'chivalry' – he thought of it simply as good manners.

He took a seat upon the pillows in a rather formal way, kneeling rather than comfortably sitting cross-legged, watching his beloved as she prepared the tea. Just as it seemed impossible for her to get coffee right, he wasn't familiar with the subtleties of brewing tea at all.

Well, to each their own.

They did not dabble into each other domains either, though … An idea, vague still, crossed his mind, but he was distracted before it could fully surface.

“Just what are you referring to?” He asked right back. There was hope, still, it wouldn't be about last night.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Unfortunately for Nergal, he was in the presence of the one person who had the best chances at reading him like an open book no matter what he did. "Something seems to be bothering you." She said, her voice soft as it tended to be, downright melodic - almost as if she was singing rather than speaking. "You know you can talk to me, right ? And... please do not take this wrong, but you're spending more time than you usually do..."

Diplomacy, thy name is not Echo. "So im guessing something might have happened somewhere." She looked at at him then.

Thabara
User Image“Nothing is troubling me.” Nergal murmured, shifting uneasily and avoiding to look at her. The calligraphy wall scroll suddenly seemed quite interesting a sight indeed.

He'd never … lie at her directly, but that didn't keep him from trying to avoid the topic alltogether.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Needless to say his actions only reinforced her doubt in her mind. She was right, and now she was certain of it.

She shifted - coming to stand abruptly, returning to her kettle.

"It is one thing if you do not want to talk about it. But do not-" She stopped abruptly, trying to dissipate the slight bit of hurt in her voice. "Do not lie to me. Please."

She hated it when he did things like that. Then she became unsure what she could trust and what she couldn't.

Thabara
User Image“Nothing is troubling me, really,” he insisted, a little hurt that she would think of him as lying. “It is merely … Let us say I received a good piece of advice, last night, and I am still thinking about it, trying to figure out … things.” He was surprisingly tight-lipped, considering he usually quite liked to hear his own voice, and that was telltale enough he was … embarassed, at least, ashamed more likely.

“From the Crown. On how I raise my children. Or rather, how I do not raise them. As I am barely ever around.” The volume of his voice seemed to drop with each word he spoke, as if he was secretly hoping she wouldn't hear them. “He was … quite right with what he said.” That last sentence was just barely above a whisper. He did not sleep, so after bringing Kios to bed he had spent the rest of the night thinking, brooding.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Too bad it was Music he was talking to, really. The only way she couldn't have heard what he said at this distance would have been for him to stay silent.

"But it is on your mind, yes ?" On his mind. Bothering. Same difference. She wasn't about to argue that, of all things, so she just let it go.

"I see..." She was pouring the tea now, having taken a cup out for him even if she knew better - the goddess would still only pour one unless he asked for some tea as well.

"I think I have a vague idea of what He must have told you." It had to be about his absence. She was able to guess at least that much. But was that... guilt in her voice. "I... should have been the one to tell you of it. I should have noticed." But she had to take care of the children, the mortals, overseeing things still, preparing sheet music and lessons for Cosine's school... Echo was rather unused to juggling so many things at once. Some details slipped though the cracks when she couldn't observe the whole situation all the time.

Motherhood didn't come with a manual either, it seemed.

Thabara
User Image“Of course it is.” Really, if it'd been anyone else, he'd likely have simply shrugged it off. There were few fathers among the Reborn, and those few were just as inexperienced as he was. Harmodius, however … It was impossible to ignore his advice.

“He pointed out quite clearly what I am missing out on,” Nergal said dryly. “I have been thinking about it ever since, and come to the conclusion that I … may not have been trying hard enough.”

Seconds ticked by with only silence filling the room. Even the soft hum of Echo's wings seemed muffled.

“And then Akakios gave me another earfull,” he admitted, gently giving his cup a nudge into her direction. While he might not be particularly fond of tea, it would only be polite to at least offer some, thank you.

“I wish you would have told me,” he agreed, but blinked a little in confusion at her expression and tone. Even the sound of her wings seemed to have dropped to the low tune of a dirge. She was blaming herself? “I … was assuming you did not out of consideration for me?”

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. She did at least pick up that hint, filling his cup as well. "Kios ?" Okay, now she was puzzled. If the matter went out of hand enough for her youngest to speak up about it...

Yes, she should have told him. But she had no idea if he would have listened. And... well, she hated seeing him upset. Or bothered. Hated to see anyone upset or bothered, really, so it always seemed better to do her best and stay silent.

Clueless, thy name is Echo.

"I should." She repeated. "But... I did not. I did not want to bother you." So many things to do, for him even more than for her. And she couldn't help with any of it. Not really. "I should have noticed how much they missed you."

Thabara
User Image“He was out and about at the time, and overheard. He was distraught enough to flee, and I ended up scouring the Pantheon grounds for his whereabouts.” He didn't quite see why he ought to be mentioning it'd been way past the garden's boundaries he'd found him, unless Echo asked. Hopefully, she wouldn't. He saw little use in causing her to be upset about it now, when the matter had already been resolved.

He picked up his cup, appreciating the aromatic scent which rose from the steaming hot surface before he took a sip. The taste left nothing to be desired, and it made him wonder if Harmodius stocked the replies himself. “He goes such great lengths to make sure we're all well and comfortable,” he murmured quietly, mostly to himself. “He certainly has more than enough on his plate to take care of, yet he still manages to make time for his children whenever they approach him. And at times even if they don't.”

“We are both new to this …” he attempted to offer her comfort, leaning over to his beloved to kiss her, gently. “We will learn, hopefully before it is to late.” He gave a slightly guilty smile. “Nothing will come from blaming ourselves, but we can try to do better from now on.” He laid the palm of his right onto the back of hers.

“And you, did you not miss me, beloved?” There was a slight tease in his voice, but the look in his eyes was solemn, betraying the loneliness he felt at times. He did come up when it became too much for him to bear, too much even to drown it in work. “You may bother me. Always, at any time. I wish you would come visit me some time? There are … things I would like your opinion on, your advice. And there is … someone waiting for you, too.”

His hand left hers, to gently trail the line of her jaw instead, taking note of the first time of the length of golden string around her neck, and dangling from it- “This is …?”

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Echo did frown a bit at that, and for a moment it did look like she would, indeed, ask... but then, thankfully for Underworld, she just brought her own cups to her purple lips. "That... is certainly something that would have him do something like that. He never did like to talk about you being gone so often." Lacrymosa was more attached to her - they were alike creatures, her daughter and herself, both emotional and sociable. The same could be said of Akakios and Nergal, who had more alike personalities. Sotiris was also more alike to his father, as she'd very often pointed out.

The both of them still denied it, but she knew better.

But she was the only one that had been able to have Guardian settle in her lap for a little while, really - and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't proud of that. It seemed normal for their children to be more drawn toward one parent that was more alike to them - she did not perceive that neither of her sons liked her any less for all their resemblances to their father.

"Maybe it would be easier if we... remembered. Children do not quite think in the same way than adults do, and if we remembered thinking like that..." She frowned a bit at the thought. No, nothing good would come out of trying to rattle herself over that. "But it can't be helped. It is good that He is willing to give advice." If she ever felt like she needed some of her own, well she knew where to go. It was calming, in a way.

"Of course I have. Deeply." How couldn't she ? If it was in any way possible, she would have spent every day, every minute, every second with him, just like this. But she knew better, of course, than to think such was possible. Their relationship hadn't been as atypical as she thought, after hearing the stories of the mortals she often spent time with. He did have a point, through - for all her longing, she'd done surprisingly little to fix it herself. Maybe in fear that she'd stop coming up if she started coming down, or that she might end up interrupting something. But well, she shouldn't judge these things for herself until they happened. She made a poor judge, after all. The irony of that thought was amusing. "I will."

She pouted when he paused in his movement, looking down to follow his line of vision. Ah, the feather. She wore it without even thinking much about it, these days. "Something." She answered, teasingly, before reaching to kiss him. The message was clear : kiss now, talk later.

Thabara
User Image“I cannot possibly imagine ever having been a child,” Nergal confessed, shaking his head slightly. “Our rebirth may be likened to this, to have forgotten so much, to be reborn so weak …” But no, that was different. Despite everything they had forgotten, despite their loss in power, they were still distinctly adult. There'd been none of the joy of discovering everything for the very first time, the thrill of exploration and the want to get to know everything and everyone ever. No, for him things had just been … inconvenient at best, scary and painful at the worst. There were exceptions from it though, like the love he'd found.

His fingers trailed the line of her chin, before he obediently bowed his head to respond to her kiss.

“It is not like I asked for that advice, though,” he muttered sulkily, once their lips parted. He didn't add anything, but his frown made it quite clear the advice had – albeit sorely required – definitely not been welcome.

“But he is right. The children … I will only have this once chance to see them grow up.” Oh, that stung, having to admit this. “The dead, on the other hand, cannot possibly become any 'deader'. As long as they are contained …” He gazed at his beloved, gray eyes darkened with sorrow. He really was torn here. “Do you think it would be alright to let them wait for … just a little longer?”

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."No... Not really." She did agree to that. It wasn't the same thing, not really. Similar, but quite different at the same time.

Of course he had not really sought the advice out. She did keep her amusement well-hidden, through. "Sometime the advice we do not want to hear is the one we end up needing the most..." It hadn't quite happened to her, not for something this important, but she had seen it happen.

And he... asked her advice on this ? This did take her aback for a moment, unsure as to what she was supposed to say. Why ask her something like this, when she really had no idea...

But then, perhaps it was the point. An outside view, perhaps. She did stay quiet for a moment, ignoring her own feelings on the matter to attempt to think of it a little more deeply. "Well, you told me once... That they were confused, unhappy and lost because there was no longer a place for them, yes ? And now, they are not so anymore ?" A place just for them. Somewhere safe. "Was that not the most important thing ? I do not want to say stop completely. but..." She was rambling. When that dawned upon her, she felt silent. So much for sound advice.

Thabara
User Image“True that,” Nergal had to admit, much to his chagrin. “I can be … quite blind at times to the most obvious things. It is a weakness I am aware of, but that does not make it any easier to overcome.”

His question had been of a rather rethorical nature. He hadn't really expected an answer from her, but rather been hoping for reassurance. But, once given, he was grateful for it all the more. “Yes. They are where they belong now, the greater part of them at least. Still, they need to be judged, their fates to be decided. So many have died, that a good part of the souls will have to be Returned, I think, to be given over to Rebirth. Also, Heaven or Hell, both of them no longer exist.” It was the first time that he would speak to her about his concerns as the ruler of his domain. “But my ability to Judge – I find it to be … lacking, severely so. I can tell truth from lie in their confessions, but … nothing else.”

He shook his head abruptly. “This is none of your concern, and I apologize for imposing on you. Still …While the dead have a place to belong now, I apparently fail at creating something that would be to their liking – especially the Smallest Souls.” Well. Kios had told him to ask his mom.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. There was really little she could do about that... little reassurance to give, really. Not for something like this. She couldn't help but feel a little helpless for a moment right there, but the last thing he spoke of did catch her attention and make her ears perk back up.

She had assumed that much would have changed down there, but... perhaps not. "What do you mean ? Do you just.... cannot find ideas ?" Something to their liking... that was a little vague indeed.

"But you know, that gives me an idea..." Indeed, how did it not occur to her before now ? "Children... like to feel implicated in things. When things are more to your liking of stability..." Again, she had no idea howsoever what the Underworld was like right now. Completely clueless. "There has to be smaller things you could get them included in ? Things that make them feel like a part of it, in a sense ?" She couldn't really think of anything offhand. "I must sound so clueless." Music sighed. She wished to help, dearly, but ultimately she wasn't quite sure how.

Thabara
User Image“As you may be aware, unlike you, I am not the most creative person,” Nergal pointed out dryly. “It is not that I am completely without ideas, but …” He shrugged, seeming rather helpless. “They do not likewhat I come up with.” He gave a small, exasperated huff. Like, he had figured they would want a place to play Hide And Seek. But they had shunned the Labyrinth he'd made for them.

… he didn't even know what his own children liked to play, he realized. Lucius' board game, he'd specifically requested to keep, he hadn't played it with them a single time, despite all good intentions. “I …” He started, but then fell silent, trying to figure out what he actually wanted to say. “Would you mind if I took them down with me, occasionally? Not for long. Just … to show them around a little, so that they may see that stupid place which apparently is more important than them.” He still wished for her to come as well, but he'd already voiced that desire and didn't want to insist on it.

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Did not like what he came up with ? Hm. That sounded like quite the challenge, to figure out what the dead truly wanted. Right now, nothing really came to mind, but... "I will see if I can think of something ?" Ha, as if she could somehow guess at it. She felt like she had to try, at the very least.

Her expression turned concerned once more as he spoke. Was that... something else that she'd missed ? "It does seem there are many things I have not noticed..." And she didn't even have the excuse of not being there. "If you think it is safe for them, then I am not against it." She would trust his judgment.

Thabara
User Image“That would be quite appreciated,” he admitted. “Dead or alive, they are still … people. There is not as much of a difference as you might think there is – except, perhaps, that they are … more faded, mere echoes of their former selves, most of them. But they are, still, people. You do know I do not fare to well dealing with them. With people. Judging them, determining the fate of their souls is one thing, but catering to their needs …?” He shook his head. “I cannot do that. And I do not think I ever did. That is quite a gap left behind by my Other, I do think …” And Echo, she might be just the right one to fill in for it, but she did have her own domain, her own believers to care for. It was too much to ask of her, especially now, that she had not yet fully grown back into her powers.

“They will be safe,” he promised, laying one pale, strong hand upon hers. Hers seemed so small and fragile compared to his … “Within Me – there is nothing that could possibly hurt them. And Akakios, at least, would get to meet his 'invisible' frieds again, though I fear most of them have passed on by now. I do not know if I am doing right or wrong, but the circle of Live, Death, and Rebirth … In between I, Kishara and Byrne – and the Twin Crown, of course – it should be mostly mended by now.” Death, of course, was still notably absent. How foolish of the mortals to think that his or her absence would mean no one ever died anymore. There was still Destruction Himself to step in for the lost deity, and himself as the possible closest relation. Death … must have been his parent, Nergal thought, he could not imagine it to be any other way.

But did such details really matter anymore?

The grip of his hand tightened around Echo's, ever so sligthtly. “I wonder,” he mused, “if there is a way to signify this house is already occupied? It would be … I would not like for our conversation to be disturbed.” He did no longer blush, but the way he cast down his glance and avoided to look at her directly, as well as the hint of a smile upon his darkened lips … Clearly, 'conversation' was not the only thing on his mind he feared to be disturbed. Considering this was Nergal talking, the implications and inuendo seemed downright … adventurous[/].

Nothing truly changed them from what they had used to be, in the widest sense. So perhaps needs related to survival were no longer important, but the rest... What made for happiness...

Hm.

She said nothing, lost in thought until the feel of his hand around hers brought her back to reality, and she tilted her head to listen to what he had to say, her expression turning puzzled.

He did not mean what she thought he meant. That was utterly impossible. Nergal of all things-

...

He did mean exactly that.

Forget adventurous, that was downright scandalous.

Echo sipped at her tea, attempting to look as innocent as possible. "Oh ?" Her smirk, playful, betrayed her all too easily. "I am sure I could think of something...."

Not So Little Anymore !

Meepfur
Since Adrienne had decided that she was going to be an aoide, and would in fact be one once she'd found a god to serve, it occurred to her that it would be a good idea to, you know, talk to some aoidei and get a better feel for what it was like to be one. She knew what Rio's aoidei did, of course, and what her father did, but figured that the more she knew, the better! And Seduce had been around for a little bit, too, although he was drunk most of the time...and he'd sort of lost his goddess for awhile.

The 'next' aoide she knew, then, was her Aunt Echo's. Concerto had helped Rio with her when he was little, but had long since returned to Music's service. Which made sense, of course, since she had three kids. And anyway, not only was he someone else to get input from, she hadn't seen him in ages and she missed him!

So, in short, it was visiting time! Adi located the proper door and knocked.

Zero Dream
Well, Concerto had decided he was done wrangling kids for today, thank you - having appointed Alto to that post and now being in the process of exiting stage left. That is, until something knocked on the door just as he was about to open it.

Drat.

Well, he might as well... and so he did, looking at the person at the other side for a moment. A lovely young woman, yet she seemed familiar.

Wait...

...

Concerto couldn't help but keep on staring for a moment before he finally ventured. "Adrienne ?" But Adrienne was tiny last he saw of her, and it couldn't have honestly been that long ago !

Also, it was probably wrong to think of someone you've watched over a child to be cute, so he tried to banish the thought from his mind. Which was a little hard, because well, she had grown up to be rather cute.

Meepfur
For Adi's part, it was rather strange to not be looking way way up at her former babysitter. But not strange enough to give her much pause. After having a little bit of a giggle at the stare she ended up on the other end of, she threw her arms around him in a very enthusiatic hug. "Concerto~!"

Zero Dream
Cute girl hugging him. This was generally a good thing, but now if was just a wee bit akward.

"Jeez, I turn my back one minute and..." He did finally manage to kick off his awkwardness - or at least hide it - as he closed his arms around her to hug her back. "When did that happen ?"

It was a little mind-blowing. But then, she has grown from being a baby to a child rather quickly, so it wasn't that far-fetched.

Meepfur
Adrienne's ribboned, fluffy tail wagged fiercely as she squeezed Concerto, positively beaming. His question merited a pause for thought once she let him go, and she considered her fingers for assistance in answering. "Ummmm..."

Deciding to differentiate between young teenager and more grown-ish teenager, she finally settled on, "A few months?"

Zero Dream
Had it really been a few months ? It was almost a little hard to believe - but then, things has indeed became much more busy after his Lady's own children were born... He had, most likely, lost track of time. This was not a good thing for him, not really.

"Well, do you want to come inside ?" Lady Echo would find no wrong in it, he knew this for sure.

Meepfur
"Sure!" Tail still wagging - it was unlikely to stop anytime soon, really - Adi was glad to be invited in. That meant he wasn't busy, and she could talk to him! Were her cousins home? She gave a cursory glance around. If they were, they could play!

...but later, after she'd visited with Concerto. "How've you been?"

Zero Dream
"It's been pretty busy." The aoide grinned as he led her to the garden inside. Her rose bushes were there, healthy and thriving. "The three of my lady's children are nearly as much as an handful as you were." Concerto had to resist ruffling her hair like he used to do when she was little, not knowing how she would take it - she, at least, looked much too old for that kind of thing.

He sat at one of the tables, inviting her to do the same. "It's been a long time, though... Im glad to see you." He'd missed her, of course.

Meepfur
Adi was delighted to see the roses - and the rest of the garden! - which she inspected visually with great interest. She wouldn't have minded at all if Concerto had ruffled her hair; in fact, she would have been more than happy to bounce up and sit in his lap if she were still the right size for it. Well, technically she probably could have, but it wouldn't have been quite the same.

"I bet they don't bite as much as I did," she said with a giggle. She hadn't noticed fangs on Crys or Kios, either, and presumably her other cousin didn't have them either.

The werewolf sat when invited, though sitting still was clearly a difficulty. After a few moments, she changed her mind and opted to sit at Concerto's feet.

"I've missed you lots! I've been busy lately too, though." Yes, this was a much better spot! Adi's tail wagged contentedly. "I'm going to be an aoide!"

Zero Dream
"Not I personally." Or perhaps he'd simply gotten enough practice with Adrienne that he knew how to dodge without noticing ? Not that he could even imagine Akakios biting anybody. Not even in self-defense, really.

Sotiris, on the other end of the spectrum...

Her last sentence caught his interest, and he perked. "Really ? Who will you serve ?"

Meepfur
"I'm not sure yet," she admitted. "I dunno if I should wait for somebody to ask me, or if I should ask them. And I should probably meet some more gods, too." If she could be that patient, anyway, considering there was one she sort of liked...well, she liked everybody, but you know.

"How did you get to be Echo's?"

Zero Dream
"Well, back in the day, gods picked you." Concerto nodded along with his own words. A lot of his memories were muddy from his long sleep, but these were nearly crystal-clear. "These days... are mostly aoidei awakening and returning to their masters, if they are reborn. Many of us did die as the gods fell." His eyes turned dark as he spoke. These were not happy memories, and just talking about it made him feel like he was living it all over again. "Those who did not... We were put to sleep. It was better than waiting for ages and eons." If they hadn't... Alto had nearly let himself die after Echo had died, and only his brothers and the prospect that someday, things might be right again...

But no, there was no use telling Adi any of this.

"I think every aoidei are different. Some are born that way. Others became such, after being chosen. And then became immortal."

Meepfur
"That's really sad. It must have been awful." Shy and Ishkha had talked a little about going to sleep, but neither one of them remembered much. Poor Shy's goddess wasn't even back, although the doemoness seemed pretty happy with Rio in the meantime.

"So I should wait, then?" Adi supposed she could manage that, even if she was really excited and maybe a little patient, but...a thought occurred to her, and her tufted ears drooped. "What if nobody picks me?" And she'd just be waiting forever and ever...

Zero Dream
Maybe he was a little biased, but Concerto couldn't help but wonder just who the hell would refuse her when she looked just like that. He did smile at the thought, and shook his head.

"Well, that was back in the day. Back when there were so many gods, of everything and anything, and it was easier to get noticed if you tried hard enough... But well, it isn't like that anymore, isn't it ? So maybe this can be different, too."

He couldn't resist. He did reach down to pat her head. Rio came to mind instantaneously but... she'd probably thought about it first. And when he thought about it, it would be pretty awkward. "Like I said, many aoidei died back then. So many gods are being reborn with none at all. Ill'd say think about what you like to do. Think about deities that fit that." No sense into doing something you didn't enjoy, right ? "Then seek them out. Ask if they need any help. I think most would be happy to have you."

Meepfur
Adrienne's tail thumped lazily against the floor in response to the comforting contact. She was usually very confident, but this whole find-a-god/become-an-aoide business was different! It was really, really important. "There is somebody...I dunno if he has any aoidei, though. What if he does?"

Granted, Rio would never turn away another aoide, but maybe Glyph was different. There were just so many things she didn't know!

Zero Dream
This could be possible, he had to admit. But, really, he found it rather unlikely. "So maybe he already has some." Concerto tried to sound as comforting as possible. He knew just exactly what tone of voice to use to comfort her, after all. "But back in the day... gods had a lot of aoidei. Thousands, if not more, doing many different things. There might not be much of a need for us as of now, but in the future... They'll all get stronger and great again. And there will be temples again." Temples. He missed running a temple. Oh, he was doing his best trying to place the thought in Echo's mind, but he had failed. Materials were better used for other things these days, she'd said. He thought that was bullshit, but he did not dare to directly go against her goddess' wishes.

"I don't think a god's likely to turn down someone willing to help out."

Meepfur
"Thousands?" Adrienne's bright eyes widened. "There were that many?" Anything in the thousands seemed an impossibly large number when it came to people of any kind. She'd read once that there were billions of humans, but she doubted it. How could there be billions of anything, and who could even count that high to know?

It was also interesting to think that gods needed more servants that stronger they were...although it did make sense, when she thought about Ea and his temple. "Maybe I will ask, then."

"So what do you all do? Um, besides babysit?"

Zero Dream
"Hm-n." Concerto nodded in answer, unable to fully contain his amusement. That did seem a rather impossible number, compared to how things were now. And the now was all that Adrienne had ever known. Come to think of it... she very well might be the first aoide to truly be born since the fall of the gods.

At her babysitting comment, he laughed lightly, clearly finding it funny rather than being offended. Babysitting was pretty much all he did lately. "I used to help run Lady Echo's temple. Before the gods faded. I made sure everything was where it had to be, and that everyone was doing what they needed to do and had what they needed to do so. I also relayed messages and greeted other gods when they came to visit. Tempo was her bodyguard, just in case something ever happened." Echo was far from a fighter back then. She was still far from a fighter, but... now she knew how to at least defend herself, more or less, wielding no blade, but her own voice, sharper than the finest steel. "And Alto was her main attendance, her best friend, kind of. She's always confided everything to him. He was and still is emotional support, you could say."

"So, pretty much." He laughed again. "I've kind of babysat all my life, come to think of it."

Meepfur
"I don't think I'd be a very good god babysitter," Adi said with a giggle, "I'm not even an adult yet." Ah yes, that mythical 'grown-up' status, which would probably take her some time to achieve in the eyes of most of the people she knew - they had, after all, known her as a baby and then a bitey little child, a past that was not far behind her at all.

"I can't imagine being somebody's bodyguard, either. But I'm good at being a friend!" In her estimation, anyway.

Zero Dream
"Oh course you are." Concerto was in complete agreement with that. Who wouldn't love such a cute little girl young lady, anyway ?

One could say he was very, very biased. He had always liked Adrienne, even at her most bitey. Though, he couldn't even remember if she had ever bitten him.

"Oh, do you want something to drink ?" He'd forgotten all about his... duty, so to say, even while talking about it.

Meepfur
Adrienne beamed, happy to be agreed with, especially in the matter of what a good friend she was. Her tail thumped lightly against the floor. "Sure! What do you have?"

Zero Dream
"Ah, I think..." Concerto pondered out loud. "Milk and juices, mostly, though ill'd have to check exactly what kind. Probably orange and something else." It was hard to tell with how quickly thristy little children went though everything. "And water, of course."

Meepfur
"Orange is good, or whatever else you have." Milk was really best as an accompaniment to things like cookies or pancakes, and a lot less appealing by itself. What she missed, though, was soda. She hadn't had that since she was little! And wasn't likely to again anytime soon.

Still, juice was pretty tasty, especially fresh.

Zero Dream
"Ill go see, then." He smiled and this time, couldn't resist - patted her head and then got up, tracing his steps to vanish in the kitchen.

What they didn't seem to know, however, was that they had a spectator. It was hard to really talk without the lady of the house hearing it, if she was present, but she could tell it was a serious matter, and she'd chosen to let Concerto handle it. It was better that way - she didn't know what it was to be aoidei.

Echo had remained hidden behind the entrance leading to her bedroom until Concerto left, and she couldn't keep quiet anymore, it seemed. "Oh, Adi !" She finally revealed herself. "You're gorgeous !" Such a lovely young lady. Last time she had seen her, Adrienne could have still easily fit into her lap, and now... !

Meepfur
Adrienne smiled up at him when he patted her head, tail thumping a little harder. When Concerto went to fetch the promised drink, she took the opportunity to peer at her surroundings a little - but only for a moment, because his mistress appeared!

Adi bounced to her feet and rushed to hug the goddess. "Aunt Echo!" She fairly preened to be called 'gorgeous' - Rio gave her such compliments, of course, but to most others she was usually 'cute.' Which was fine too, but what girl didn't want to be thought pretty? "You really think so?"

Zero Dream
"Of course !" Yes, Echo was positively certain of this, as she hugged the not-so-little girl anymore. "I always told Rio that you would end up taller than I am, too." It was not quiiiiiite the case, but Adrienne was getting dangerously close.

Alas.

Meepfur
"I always wanted to be pretty," Adrienne admitted, delighted to have at least attained that particular want at last, "Like you." And Kishara, and Illisia, and Shy and Ishkha, and...did she know anyone who was not pretty? Not off the top of her head.

"He keeps telling me not to get taller than him," the werewolf said with a giggle.

Zero Dream
"I can understand why." Echo laughed, and sat, her toes wriggling in the grass. "I fear I will have no such luck with my sons..." Especially if they decided to take after their father.

She would have no choice but to get used to it, wouldn't she ?

Meepfur
"It's different when they're boys, though," Adi pointed out, chuckling. "They're usually taller than girls, anyway." Yes, it would be weird to be taller than Rio - or any other boy. Except for her cousins, at least while they were younger than her. It was okay to be taller for now.

The young woman plopped down beside her aunt, settling herself comfortably again. She'd come to ask Concerto about being an aoide, but since Echo was here, well, she could certainly come up with some suitable questions for her too!

About equally intriguing matters. "Do you know any boys my age?"

Zero Dream
"They do, and they probably will, expecially if they decide to take after their father." Echo was definitively amused.

Boys her age ? Oh my, that could only go one way now, could it ? "Not personally, no." She leaned toward her niece in some sort of conspirator-y whisper. "But ill keep an eye out, hmm ? Though..." Her eyes lit up with mischief. "What about Concerto... ?"

"Ahem." He was right there, of course, there was no way Echo couldn't know that her servant was right behind her, carefully holding a tray full of fresh fruit and three glasses of orange juice. More note-worthy, however, was probably the lovely shade of red he had turned once he had been brought up.

Meepfur
Though initially disappointed that Echo didn't know anyone, her ears perked with interest when she mentioned another possiblity. Concerto was rather handsome, after all, and she had at one time had a bit of a little girl crush on him (as children sometimes did with babysitters and teachers). It was an interesting possibility that bore further discussion.

...or would have, if he hadn't chosen right then to come back, and clearly heard his mistress. Adi giggled unrepentantly. "You think so?"

Zero Dream
"Of course !" Echo couldn't help herself - she was laughing, loud and true. Poor Concerto ! She'll feel bad later on. Maybe. "Is is rather cute, no ?"

Concerto seemed to know better than to say anything at this moment - sure, there was no denying that Adi was cute and nice but it was Adrienne and he'd changed her damn diapers ! and well, she was still very much little Adi in his mind, in spite of having the proof sitting right in front of him.

He crouched down to lie the platter down at arms' length of both the ladies, and lingered, for a moment, not knowing if he was meant to stay or go back to the sanctity of the kitchen while he was being gossiped about.

Meepfur
Adrienne 'studied' him for a moment, though she couldn't keep a straight face, and observed, "He does have nice wings."

It was just in good fun, though. Mostly. She was well aware that she was still little Adi to just about everyone - and Concerto'd known her since the day she was born. She'd just have to find someone who hadn't known her when she was little; not that she was in any particular hurry. She had plenty of other things to do!

When he set the platter down, her tail set to wagging again. "Ohh, snacks!"

Zero Dream
Concerto's poker face wasn't holding, and he blushed even more when Adrienne 'studied' him, not quite realizing it was jokingly until much too late, and then he simply sat, and looked at his mistress. "Does this mean we are even ?"

Echo, for her part, had taken an orange quarter to eat, and she looked as much as an imp as is was possible for her to be. "Maybe." Concerto had given her hell back when she and Nergal had been in this weird, in between stages - it was more than time for her to claim some payback.

Meepfur
Hmm, what to have~? Something that went with orange juice...but not an orange. After a moment of thought, Adi selected and apple, only to tip her head curiously at the 'adults.' "Even? For what?"

Zero Dream
"You see, dear, Concerto can't leave anything alone." Echo leaped on the question, so to speak, looking downright angelic.

"You two just had to not make it so tempting." Concerto muttered.

"That is, he teased the hell out of Nergal and I. This certainly call for payback, doesn't it ?" She batted purple eyelashes as innocently as possible. Ironically enough, it was working.

Meepfur
"Ohh, I see," Adi said with a giggle, especially amused that her aunt had used a 'bad word.' Not that it was very bad, just a little, on the profanity scale. As she thought for a moment about what to say or ask next, things like how Echo had fallen in love with Nergal, or what was it like, a potential question popped into her head that made her very curious indeed.

"Have you ever been in love, Concerto?" Adrienne, it seemed, was growing up to be every bit as nosy as Rio, if not more so.

Zero Dream
Echo had either never noticed the 'bad word' slip out, or she considered Adrienne old enough for it to be a complete non-issue. Right now, however, her attention was completely on her aoidei.

...What kind of question was that ?! Though, he figured, that made sense for these kind of questions to be on her mind. She was at... that age, after all, and he remembered being young, one upon a time. If only for that, he made himself answer.

"Twice." It didn't seem much for an immortal aoide, really. "The first was... before I became aoide. She was mortal, and she died." And that was the way things were. "The second time..." He went silent, shaking his head as if the chase a bad memory. "He was aoide, too, but... I don't think he's coming back."

He'd held Adagio in his own arms as he died, after all... He shook his head again. It was no use thinking about it now.

Meepfur
In hindsight, it probably hadn't been the best question to ask, but it hadn't occurred to her that Concerto might have been in love and had a sad ending, not a happy one. Or...endings, as it were. She leaned forward to offer a hug, looking a little guilty. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you sad."

Zero Dream
He did close his arms around her, when she hugged him. "It's okay. It's probably good that you know these things." Not everything was happy. Not everything ended well. It was a part of life she'd seen little exposure to, loved as she was. He knew it well, because he had directly been a part of that environment. "I've made my peace with it. It just... When you love someone, and they're gone... It gets better, in a way, but the pain is never truly gone. It recedes, but it never leaves completely."

Echo, on her part, was silent. She knew better than to ask - now, or well, ever. Unless Concerto brought it up himself, she wouldn't ask. It was none of her business.

Meepfur
Yeah, that had been a definite oops. Adi would have to remind herself better, in the future, that you didn't ask every question that happened to pop into your head. Well, except if it was Rio or Orin. They were her parents, she was allowed. "Thank you for telling me."

It had given her something to think about, though, and maybe tell Rio about. Maybe it was something he could help with. In the meantime, though, it was probably time for a change of subject. "I didn't know you weren't always an aoide. Did Echo make you one?"

Zero Dream
This wasn't dangerous territory, but it was potentially surprising territory - given how much Echo remembered of the past. He could feel the goddess looking at him in pure curiosity, even now. "She did." He answered, patting Adi's head again. "A long time ago. All three of us."

Meepfur
"That's really cool." Adi's tail wagged again. "Shy and Ishkha weren't always aoidei, but they don't remember very well how they got to be."

Zero Dream
"It is hard to remember that far back." Concerto nodded. "I don't remember exactly how, either. Or when. I've slept for a long time, so things kind of just... run together and it can be a little hard to separate them." Maybe Adrienne would experience something like this, one day, when she would have a few centuries of life under her belt. Maybe.

Meepfur
"I can't imagine sleeping for so long." Sometimes, if she was really really tired or lazy, she might sleep for ten or even twelve hours, but for years and years? How would you not wake up? Maybe it was like bears hibernating, or something. "Do you dream, when you sleep that long?"

Zero Dream
"I don't remember." Concerto had to admit, resting his head on his knees. "I don't think I did, because I usually remember my dreams, It probably was the magic that was used to make us sleep that did it." Well, that explained the 'how', at least.

Echo, for her part, was still listening attentively, sneaking some fruit off the plater whenever she thought no-one was looking.

Meepfur
"Oh, that's too bad. I don't think I'd like sleeping as much if I didn't get to dream." It was, after all, the best part about sleeping.

Zero Dream
"It was probably better that way, through." Given what had happened just before... no, he absolutely refused to think about that, even less talk about it with his mistress right here, beside him.

And the best defense was offense. "So, are there any boys you like ?" Right back at you, Adrienne !

Meepfur
"If there were," she said with a giggle, "I wouldn't have asked! I don't know very many boys, really. I know you, and Laurence, and Glyph, and that's about it. Well, and Kios, but he's little still." And her cousin, in a sort-of-but-not-really way.

Zero Dream
Well, Concerto didn't know this Laurence and-- Kios ?! Okay, he laughed. "I don't think girls are remotely on Kios' radar, dear." At least not that way.

Echo, as it was, was only slightly less amused. "And it can stay like that for a long time." A looooong time, really. The idea of her little baby boy dating kind of threatened to break her mind, at the moment.

Meepfur
"I don't think he's on ours, either." Adrienne laughed. He was still small, after all! Kios was a long way from being boyfriend potential. The werewolf twitched her ears. "Do you know anybody?"

Zero Dream
Hmmm... "Not really, unfortunately." Certainly no one that would fit Adi. ...Why the hell was he playing matchmaker, anyway ?!

This was so silly, in a way.

Even Echo was at a short for potential suitors for her niece - she needed someone special after all ! "Well, Adi, with boys... they tend to pop up when you less expect them to." Oh, such a true story...

Meepfur
"Really?" She couldn't help but be a little disappointed, but it wasn't like she didn't have time. "Well, I guess that's alright. I'm pretty busy, anyway."

Zero Dream
"Boys are trouble, anyway." Echo stated, and certainly thought she had the experience to back it up. "You can wait a little longer."

"A-hem..." Concerto was ultimately more amused than upset, thankfully.

Meepfur
"I guess I can," she agreed, chuckling, "Even if they are kind of cute." Adi plucked up another piece of fruit to munch on.

"Soo are any of my cousins around? I'd love to play awhile!" She might be old enough to be interested in boys, but she was still even more interested in games.

Zero Dream
"Hmmm..." Echo pondered out loud. Where had her children gone ? "Kios is probably around, but..." And then, she was up on her feet to go check.

Well, somehow this was a little comforting. Adi wasn't quite an adult just yet. Whew.

He moved to get up, but Echo beat him to it, and he rolled his eyes. "Also, don't let your god get too independent." He teased. "Then you'll get bored in no time flat."

Meepfur
It would be awesome if Kios were here! They could go play outside, and she could show him her tree - he'd like that, right? He'd seemed to like plants. Adi wagged her tail in anticipation.

"I can see where that would be a problem." The young woman grinned. They'd be out of their jobs as aoidei if gods decided to do everything for themselves.

Zero Dream
"Exactly." Adi was always a quick learner, after all. There wouldn't be any issues.

...Where had he gone ? Echo was certain her youngest had been right there ! But then he wasn't. Must have slid out while she was distracted. With that, she returned to the pair or aoidei. "I have no idea where he went... He's probably somewhere outside already ? He never goes far on his own."

"Oh well, his lost." Concerto decided. "Ill play with you, Adi." Like the good old times ! Maybe.

So weird.

Meepfur
Adi's ears and expression fell at the news that Kios wasn't home, but quickly rose again when Concerto offered. Her tail wagged rapidly, and she beamed. The werewolf hopped to her feet, slapped Concerto lightly on the shoulder, and dashed towards the door with a "You're it~!"

Zero Dream
...What ?

Wait a second...

...

Damnit, it always happened like that !

"Hey ! You just wait !" And then, he was hot on Adrienne's heels, Echo's amused laughter following him on the way out.

Break Time... ?

Zero Dream
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Try as she might, it just seemed like the notes were dancing in and out of her awareness without even being able to reach down to the paper in front of her.

Oh, she had excuses, of course. Even now, her awareness was split in between getting this out of her head, while she listened carefully for the sounds just outside - her little brood in the garden, playing some sort of game. Echo had spent most of the day chasing after Sotiris, and cooking with her daughter (who was much more skilled at it than she was, it was worth nothing.) And then Akakios had come with a list of words he wanted to know the meaning of, and then it had been Allysia dragging her off, still trying to get her to cave in on the temple idea in spite of her saying, time and time again, that the limited resources were better spend elsewhere. And how could no one else see what ? There were still houses to be built. Places to hold shops. Clinics. Schools.

So many things...

And then, next she knew it was late, and she still needed to get this done. Oh, Cosine would forgive her for not doing it in time, of course, but the fact was that Echo would not be able to forgive herself. They'd waited long enough.

And yet, she could only stare at the carefully lined sheet of paper in front of her blankly, as if she had forgotten just what was supposed to go where in spite of having it all swimming in her head.

Thabara
User ImageShe did look tired, Nergal had to admit to himself as he watched her, having slipped into her study as silently as only the Overseer of the Dead possibly could (with the notable exceptions from it being, of course, of Silence, and his own brother). It was – verily so – entirely against his habit to enter unannounced, without knocking. But he'd wanted a good look at her, in private. Without trying to put up a facade for anyone, least of all himself.

He might have noticed it before, on a subconscious level, but thought nothing of it. He wouldn't, after all, want for anyone to catch him looking tired and weary; and if mentioned in his presence, he would most likely fervently deny any of the like.

It required people like Ishum, honest and faithful, daring to truthfully speak their mind, to remind him of the fact that Echo was Not. Like. Him.

“If nothing comes to you,” he spoke softly, his voice barely above a whisper, as the last thing he intended to was to startle her, “it is time to step back, and take a deep breath before starting over again.” That advice was Ishum's, actually. Most definitely not his own, as Nergal fiercely believed in 'solving' problems by either headbutting into them until they crumbled to dust under the sheer force of his stubborness, or turning his back to them until they went away on their own.

He stepped closer, eying the large harp next to him with mild interest, feeling somewhat tempted. He had been practicing, in secret. However, the one time he had asked Echo for permission to try one of her instruments she had looked so alarmed and extremely wary … He knew Music was fircely protective of their children. Her instruments, he felt, ranged a very close second. Himself … third. Maybe. “Pardon me, my Lady, for intruding on your private chambers unannounced. Will you forgive me …?” He bowed, unusually formal, for when it came to Echo at least.

She did not seem too startled, but her ears did stand up straight. Echo had no idea that Nergal had been right there. Or for how long. How long as he been there, standing, never breathing, never speaking, without a sound to betray his presence ?

Echo still couldn't imagine herself not breathing.

"It is fine." She did answer after her surprise faded, and she turned her chair to face him, a smile on her face. It was a good thing he'd chosen to sneak onto her, because now nearly all traces of her previous state was gone, deeply burried. She had the time. She could find the time. For anyone but herself, it seemed like.

"I thought you had left already." She admitted. "But I am glad you are still here." She had thought she had missed him, thanks to Allysia dragging her around town again.

User Image“That had been my intention,” he admitted. After all it was rather hard not to notice that he had spent most of the day settling his affairs within the Living and preparing his leave. “I did, however, decide to extend my stay for … a while. Something came up.”

He peered over his beloved's shoulder, quite easily, at the sheet music she'd been working on – or rather, trying to do so. They were empty, just as he had suspected. “I meant what I just said, though. About stepping back, when you are stuck, and taking a deep breath. Or … a break, rather.”

He settled on one of the nearby chairs, after having moved whatever notes Echo had piled on them to the table with extraordinary care. They looked like … schematics, curiously enough. For but a moment, he was distracted, gazing upon the drawings with open, almost child-like curiosity. Designs, perhaps, for new instruments? As if he'd know. Inwardly, Underworld sighed. He still knew so precious little about his beloved's domain, even though he greatly enjoyed its gifts.

“Why … wont you go and visit Elizabeth's homeworld, for instance? I can take care of affairs here, while you are gone. And the children.” That should have gone the other way around, he realized, but precious moments too late. “The aoidei can help me. Which, uhm, does not mean I would leave caring for them entirely to them,” the god added hastily. This … He was doing a fabulous job messing this up all on his own right now, he felt. Her expression at least seemed more than doubtful. She was probably wondering just what the hell had gotten into him.

It was so hard to tell by expression alone, sometimes. Though... no, he wouldn't have left her hanging like that if it was the case, wouldn't he ?

"That might be the best idea right now..." She sighed, poking at the sheet with one brightly-colored pen. It was hard to admit defeat, even for her. "I had promised I would have them done tomorrow, though... But I didn't expect to be dragged all over the place."

Nergal's mention of a break didn't seem to stick, at least now in the kind of break he was actually refering to. Not at first. She did notice his interest on the designs, though, and seemed just about to enter a lengthy explanation explanation on the subject when he decided to elaborate. And in spite of what he meant becoming all the more clearer, Echo seemed to become more and more lost.

Echo was, indeed, wondering just what the hell had gotten into him, and for a moment, she said nothing at all. And then, meekly - "Are you sure it will be allright ?"

He was busy. He was so. very. busy, her mind screamed. But it would be so nice to be the one to go for once, the one to reach out and explore. She hadn't left this city ever since she'd gone to awaken him, she suddenly realized.

User Image““There is nothing to worry about,” he assured her. Well, he could hardly tell her that the reason for his extended stay was her, could he now?

He very much doubted Cosine would require these musical sheets first thing come next morning, if at all within the next few weeks. He would have to talk to her about this. But, what with Ankou coming and going like the wind she of all people involved with his family probably knew best just how things went.

“It will be alright,” he promised to Music. “Do you doubt my ability to handle this?” He quirked a hairless brow and smiled, teasing her, just a little.

Just a tiny little pea-sized doubt, but that was the kind of doubt she held into anyone not her taking care of their children. Certainly nothing personal, and stemmed more from her own personal insecurity than any lack of trust.

"What I meant by that is... Is everything will be allright down in the Underworld while you do this ?" This was one of the things that had stopped her from asking, actually. What if something happened ? And, well, Nergal was always busy.

It was about time someone had come to knock some sense into her, really.

User Image“Beloved.” Nergal said, in a tone gentle yet stern. “While I may not yet have gained the full 'hang' of my powers and abilities, they are fully returned. I am a god. Do not think, not ever, that you would have to restrain yourself for me. Because, really, you do not.”

He bent forward a little, and reached for her hand, putting it to rest against his chest. “The flow of souls never stops. Even as I sit here and speak with you, they are still being taken in, their deeds judged, their fates decided. Besides, Ankou has grown. He can give me a hand, if it needs be.”

She had... never thought about it that way, of course, and she certainly did feel a little silly about it. It had just... never occurred to her.

Her head did follow soon after her hand, though, and she leaned against him more fully. She didn't hear anything, of course, not even the bare flutter of a heartbeat... But at that moment, she couldn't help but wonder if same could be said for their youngest son.

"For now, though." She looked up, impish. "Im keeping you for tonight." Apparently he had little say in the matter.

Thabara
User Image“Is that so.” He hesitated, for but a moment, but then he pulled her fully over, gently, to sit on his lap. While Underworld still shied back from physical contact with others, it was rare for him to not find himself longing for her touch, her warmth. “The sheets cannot have been that important then. How silly of you to stress yourself so much over them.” He smiled, and then bent down, his pale fingers digging into the silken softness of her hair as he bent down to gently kiss the side of her neck.

Her scent, her touch, it was invigorating as always. How much he wished for her to come down once more, for her – that what she was, Music – to fill him.

But that would have to wait.

“Beloved …” He whispered instead. “Did I ever tell you just how much I love you?”

The souls of the dead however, he strongly suspected, might not remain as silent. He'd caught their whispers, about the missing Queen. Next Day Of The Dead was close …

Of course not.

"Of course you have." Well, maybe not as much as he'd liked - who was she to judge of that ? "You never needed to tell me anything." She nuzzled in a bit closer. "I've always felt it. No matter what."

User Image"Well. How about a different set of sheets then?" He suggested with a smirk. Because really ... The tea house had been one thing, there had been pillows aplenty. Here, however, in Echo's music room ... Nah, too uncomfortable.

He did not wait for an answer, but instead simply sneaked one arm underneath her legs while the other supported her back as he got up.
