Jude was stunned for a moment when the creature suddenly grabbed one of the fellow trainees, after transforming in the most horrifying way ever. This was way worse than a horror movie but then again if this was a movie he'd be able to yell 'cut' and the whole ordeal would be over and he'd get to b***h out the director.

Yeah that'd be awesome.

...Too bad it wasn't happening.

He tightened his grip on his bat and stared as it dragged the trainee along with acidic stuff getting sprayed everywhere and...

...He couldn't stand back like this. That person was in danger and they weren't in teams anymore. Everyone should help everyone or so he believed. Sure he wasn't touchy feely. Sure he wasn't a social butterfly but that didn't mean he hated everyone. He just wanted a lot of personal space especially recently.

Shaking his head clear of unwanted thoughts and bad emotion he moved in to help a comrade in need. The pain was ... horrible but he was determined to help as he raised a bat to try and very firmly convince the thing to let go. There was no time to get out the gun.

He felt the bat make a nice firm contact against the thing, it was satisfying to feel the impact after all the pain he currently felt.

As the wave of monsters drew closer, Caitlyn took a moment to berate herself for not sorting through the contents of her bag earlier. It took more time than she had to spare to search beyond the textbook and bandages and finally close her fingers around the grip of a short bat. By the time she was able to raise the weapon to strike, the first mob was demolished.

“Well, uh, good job guys.” Caitlyn twirled her bat lightly, feeling self conscious that she hadn’t helped. She wouldn’t let it happen again with the next wave of monsters.

Gale’s sudden capture completely blindsided her. The bile the monster released hissed and spit upon contact with the ground. That couldn’t be good. Was the young guy okay? Caitlyn hesitated at the edge of the puddle, watching as one girl ran after him. If she could do it, so could Caitlyn.

Besides, it might make up for the whole killing him thing.

Caitlyn gripped her bat with both of her fists and plunged into the acid.

“Aaaaah!” she screamed, both in agony and in anger. She swung wildly at the monster holding Gale in its grasp and missed. The pain was too much!

Oh it hurt. It hurt a lot.

"Scars are more like badges of honor from a battle well fought and a comrade saved from a terrible fate," he pointed out as he readied himself for another swing. He hoped for a repeat of his earlier performance of when he actually hit it. Jude felt as if he was on fire somehow but there were no flames just horrible, horrible burning acid that smelt terrible and the burning flesh smelt worse.

He was determined to help. Jude wouldn't back out until the very end or he was dragged away.

Repeat performance is what he got as he smacked the creature with about as much force but he felt the same amount of satisfaction. At least it was hurting while he was hurting!

"Only if you're a manly man," She retorted Jude before grinning, rather relieved that they weren't choosing to leave Gale to his fate. The other girl - Caitlyn? - got a grin from her as well, "And I have no intention of scarring myself this early in my career."

As Ariane chased the thing down, she tried to ignoring the stinging sensation on her arm and the disgusting smell of burnt flesh. Her flesh. Ugh... Her grip on the bat tightened as she swung out, careful not to hit Gale in the process - if the acid droplets hurt this much, he must be in a world of pain.

Hanna clocked another strange creature in the face. The bones crumpled inward, leaving a gaping, rotting hole staring back at her. "Cope or go crazy," she said to Scott, laughing tensely. "I prefer coping. Fits into my psychological framework better." Another monster approached. Hanna channeled her inner slugger and let fly.

When the corpses collapsed, the auburn-haired teenager straightened slowly, still holding the bat in front of her. Golden eyes scanned the horizon, waiting for either Caelius to return or the next terrible thing to happen. She got the latter. The first wave began to retreat, but then one ambitious corpse decided to explode and claim Gale as its ********," Hanna swore, stiffening against the scent of rotting flesh. Around her, others rushed forward, immediately clamoring to Gale's aid. A teammate was in trouble. It seemed like the honorable thing to do.

Hanna was a lot of things, but she wasn't selfless. Her kneejerk had never been to put her own life in danger. Besides, she had fallen on a blade a few days ago trying to do the "right" thing. It had left her dead. Hanna planned on learning from her mistakes this time, and that meant hanging back while the others rushed forward. If they got too injured to fight, then someone had to stay around to put them back together.

Dropping to her knees, Hanna pulled the gun free from her bag and the bandages too. She stuffed the cotton strips into the hidden pocket of her skirt, dropped the bat into her backpack, and then slipped it over her shoulders. Ariane, Jude, and Caitlyn had all run in. Hanna jogged a few paces forward, but was careful to keep clear of the acid.

"I have bandages over here," she shouted to those who had gone in to attack. "Don't stand in the acid, jesus! I have bandages!"

One moment Gale had been busy whacking at the creature with a bat. The next? Airborne.

He didn't even have time to react. Something wet and slimy wrapped around his ankle and in one swift second he was yanked backwards, his fingers losing their grip on the bat, sending it tumbling uselessly to the ground. He was hoisted upwards, dangling upside down.

"WHAT THE F***ING HELL - ?!"

He really needed to work on his language. Gale's free leg kicked furiously in a vain attempt to free himself, but whatever it was that was wrapped around his ankle was too strong. There was a horrid smell in the air, something acrid and nauseating that made his stomach churn.

And that shriek...it made his head ring, his heart clattering loudly in his chest.

For the first time since he had been awakened, Gale Gentry was frightened.

Down below he could see the others, all stunned, running towards the creature; Ariane's bat flashing, Caitlyn's shriek of fury, the pale haired boy's look of determination, and the dark haired girl's call about bandages.

He could feel it now. A raw, horrifying shriek of agony reverberating up from his ankle to his leg and spreading throughout the rest of him now. It was like nothing he had ever felt before, nothing he ever wanted to feel ever again.

A scream ripped from Gale's throat, hoarse and angry.

“Or in your case, cope by going crazy.” He knew he had proposed a temporary suspension to the s**t talking, but he couldn’t resist. There was something comforting about it. Incongruous to the situation, perhaps, but mundane enough to be the only thing keeping him from turning on his heel and running back the way they came. Of course, the way they came was equally as clogged with shrieking nightmares, but Scott felt a pressing need to run somewhere. Anywhere.

Preferably in the opposite direction of the monster currently giving one of his fellow trainees an acid bath.

At the sight of Gale being pulled to the ground, dragged through bile soaked sand toward a grisly end, Scott felt not a call to action but a deep seeded weariness that made his entire body ache. Gas masks. Fire horses. Wizard girls with scythes. Smug Caelius and now this. What truth was worth such trouble?

He watched as three of the other candidates unquestioningly sprung to Gale’s aid. Forced to fill the space left by Hanna as she ran to the acid’s age, waving bandages in an attempt to lend a hand, he fell back against Scarlett. He turned away from the scene, telling himself he wasn’t a coward. He would absolutely have helped if the circumstances were more dire, but as it were he was simply playing the numbers. In a group whose majority was chest thumping braggarts, not everyone needed to play the hero. Some of them could afford to hang back and focus on their own survival.

Or at least they could if they were the least bit competent with a weapon. Scott exchanged his bat for his gun, though perhaps he should have stuck with what was working. He tried to take aim at the second wave of creatures closing in from a distance, but his bullet only ended up blasting a hole in one of the quaint summer homes. At least nobody was around to worry about property damage.

Where Scarlett had been comfortable with the handgun, she was entirely uncomfortable with the bat. She had never played sports because it took away from the time she spent studying and her faith in her physical prowess was next to none. She was confident about the things she had done before, the things she had excelled at before, but this was not one of those things.

Instead she'd shrunk back, shifting and squirming and using her bat only to keep the monsters from direct contact with her. So far, it had worked, and she wasn't about to change strategies.

The horrifying screech did grab her attention, however, and her eyes snapped up and past the perimeter of their little three-man group. As they settled on Gale, her mouth contorted into a frown, but her body didn't move. Sure, that trainee should have been just as much a companion to her as Hanna and Scott were. Yet Gale hadn't been at her side firing rounds, he hadn't been there to protect her and watch her back.

She watched as the monster swept him up into its hideous, acid dripping jowls and just shook her head. She wasn't going to endanger herself to help someone that hadn't been paying enough attention to the horde around them, especially if that someone didn't directly benefit her. Hanna or Scott? Sure, she'd swing away and try to save them. Gale's safety meant nothing to her survival, though.

She fell back instead, with her back to Scott as he shot out with his handgun. Her bat was poised at the ready, as if she might consider swinging at anything that got too close, but her eyes were switching between the fighting boy in the distance, Hanna trying to help the people that were sacrificing themselves for him and the monsters crowding in ever closer around them.

"That's unfortunate," she said beneath her breath, loud enough that those closest to her might here, but not so loud that it would carry to others too far away.

Her fingers tightened around the grip of her bat and she finally broke her gaze from Gale, concentrating instead on anything that might get too close. Hanna could help the others, Scott could shoot from a safe distance, and she would watch their backs to the best of her ability. She didn't know if her best was enough, but she was willing to try went it meant putting distance between them and flesh decaying acid.

She just hoped none of the others turned out to be surprise traps.

No one had taken her up on her offer of bandages, and Hanna was not comfortable sitting like a duck while a wave of writhing bodies crashed toward them. Three hunters were already helping Gale. She mentally assigned herself the task of going after the next wave instead. Scott seemed to be on the exact same page.

Golden eyes flickered to Scarlett. "We're better with the guns," she said dumbly. Talking helped quiet the screaming in her head.

With the bandages tucked in her pocket, Hanna leveled her gun at the wall of bodies and fired. A spray of acid flicked uncomfortably close to her, throwing off her aim at the last second. "Maybe not," she said under her breath, adjusting the safety as if it would help her shoot straighter.

Hanna wasn't helping Gale, wasn't healing anyone, and wasn't even shooting a decent shot. What good was she?

At first, it seemed as though they were doing pretty well. Bodies had begun to pile up, severed limbs and disemboweled organs staining the sand a ruddy reddish brown, the dirt clumping together where blackish blood had sprayed over the battle field. Some of it might have been their own -- it was hard to tell whose blood at been spilled at this point, with each whack of the bat against meaty, decomposing flesh spraying their clothes with blood spatter, like the kind seen at a homocide. But this was not murder. It was war, and there was only one of them that not only would survive, but could. These creatures weren't alive -- whether they had been alive or not at one point was irrelevant at this point. They were bent on the destruction of the human race, feeding off of them as if they were food, cattle to be herded and controlled. There was no murder involved, this was survival of the fittest.

Despite having missed her last swing, the creature Petra had swung at seemed to retreat for some reason as an audible clicking filled the air. For a second she paused, still keeping her blood-stained bat raised high just in case, but it truly seemed like they were retreating, slowly inching back towards the rest of their team. Except that couldn't be it. None of them had gotten more than little scratches... it couldn't be that easy, could it? Swiveling her gaze around, she watched them with suspicion, reaching up with one hand to brush a strand of black hair out of her eyes slowly, clearly still focused more on the enemy. And for good reason. She heard rather than saw one of the creature's backs suddenly split along the spine, the sound of a body being dragged away causing her to spin, watching as Gale began to be dragged away. A few of the others jumped in to try to save him, some with success, others getting badly burned as the acid-spit ate through skin and clothes.

And the second wave grew ever closer.

s**t.

Turning towards the ever-approaching wall of creatures coming towards them, Petra kicked off the dirt away from the others, attempting to hold back the swarm while they got the littler hunter free. Although it would have been smarter to use the gun, she had been better with her mace on the island... and truth be told, she felt more safe with something solid in her hands.

"I know," Scott said to Scarlett as another of his off-target shots broke a window and further drove down property value. "I was doing so well earlier, so I don't know why - ... oh."

Scott briefly turned to watch the group struggling through the acid to reach Gale. He could only handle a moment of it before he was forced to turn away, trying not to think about how utterly useless he was being.

"Yes, well, this entire thing is pretty unfortunate, isn't it?"

Gale was still airborne, and his three would-be rescuers were getting doused in acid. Shots rang out, but none of it seemed to stop the next wave of attacks. They swelled like a tsunami on the horizon. The space between the corpses and Hanna was the only thing that gave her comfort, and that gap was closing more and more with each ticking second.

Ahead of her, Hanna watched Petra go after the wall of creatures with a bat. It was a little too close for comfort, but the teenager wouldn't leave her to strike at them on her own. "Petra, I've got your back!" Hanna shouted, lifting her gun once more and hoping for a steadier hand.

Her enhanced concentration paid off this time. The head of one of the corpses exploded from the bullet, bits of jaw and skull staining the creatures on either side of it. But it kept moving, kept walking. Hanna shuddered. It had only just begun.

Scarlett glanced to Hanna as she imparted her wisdom - guns were better than bats. She looked around briefly to make sure nothing was closing in on them and decided that for the time being, the gun probably would be a better decision.

She reached behind her to shove the bat back in her backpack, not willing to just toss it somewhere and have it lost while she wasn't looking. Then she pulled out her handgun again, flicked off the safety, and turned so she could level it on the second wave closing in on them from the distance.

She fired, the shot rang out, and the bullet kicked up a spray of dirt as it planted firmly in the ground.

Scarlett swore under her breath and dropped her hand. She took a few deep breaths and tried to calm herself. She needed to steady her breathing or it would throw off her aim - it was already happening, and it was a problem. It was hard to stay calm when monsters were surrounding you and a boy was screaming from the mouth of an acid monster.

Inwardly, she wished she had taken the time to hunt something a little more dangerous than white tailed deer. Maybe then the panic wouldn't be so awful.

"This all seems a little poorly planned," she sighed, tightening her fingers around the handle of her handgun. "Who sends untrained soldiers to fight something like this?" She threw a glance up at Scott, then turned back to look at the scene they were littering with misplaced bullets. It would be a miracle if they got out of this alive.

s**t s**t s**t s**t s**t s**t. Cassandra was just not suited to trying to swing a blunt object like a bat, that much she was sure of. She sort of wished her gun still had bullets in it, despite the situation. However, it seemed one of their own had been grabbed up and Cass had to swallow her complaints about weaponry and keep them to herself until another time.

"I'm going in to help." She said, looking to Marcus before she took up the bat in her hands and with the kind of confidence that could only be really faked in a situation like this started her approach towards the horrible rot-causing creature. Her arms were shaking and all she really wanted to think about was dropping the weapon and just running for the hills.

This had all been so much easier when she'd had a gun and distance to hide behind. They were just a small group of people! She didn't want to die again. The confidence she had over the fear of death due to dying twice was quickly diminishing in the face of the idea that she actually may die. s**t. She'd gotten-out-of-death-freed the last two times! Well, she hadn't actually been expecting that to be the case.

But she'd been gotten-out-of-death-freed!! What if she'd run out of how many of those she'd had in the trials because her head kept having malfunctions and breaking all over? Every possible horrible maiming Dead-Space-mauling-death-alien-take-over-body-sprawl-into-gorey-pieces-s**t-shoved-in-eyes scenario for death went reeling through her head. But with every one she took another step.

She had to set her jaw into as determined of a look as she could, even though really she wanted to go pee her pants somewhere privately and wonder if she could maybe burn that form she'd agreed to sign blindly when she hadn't realized just how much s**t she was going to get herself into.

None the less, she approached the creature holding Gale and swung her weapon. She had to hope she didn't throw something out in her attempts to assist.

Instead she nearly dropped her weapon on her foot when the black.. stuff touched her skin, wincing at the burning sensation it caused, retracting her arms from it's general radius. Oh god, ow ow ow ow ow.

She gritted her teeth together to keep from biting her tongue.
