It didn't take any coaxing for Zeta Ten to follow Zeta Six. She hated what this beach had become, hated it so much that the fog seemed nearly welcome compared to it. As Zeta Six walked after Zeta Seven, she fell in step behind them. They were her team now, even if they were small, and that was all she needed to know. Now she had a manageable group to protect, people she could use her gun for.

Zeta One nodded and turned, following Six and Seven. She followed quietly, glancing back only to make sure no one was going to run up and stab them. The quiet was getting to her too, and anywhere was better than there right now. She glances around, the fog a little intimidating to her.

But she was with Six and Seven. She was safe, for the most part, and that's really what mattered to her right now.

Left alone and unnoticed by the others as the boss left and everyone else drifted off once the fight was done ... Fiver's body lay on the beach, abandoned.

And then, whether by a trick of the light, or something else, it seemed to quite simply ... disappear - fading away into the fog as if nothing had ever happened.

One minute it was there, the next it was gone. Just a strange, human-shaped indent in the sand.

Where had A10's body disappeared to?

A strange, chilling wind blew over the beach, sweeping up the mess left behind by the previous fight.

Confused... oh so utterly terrified and confused, Z2 stared in horror as A10 was taken away by death. They had really done it.... they had really killed another person. The very same person that Z2 was trying to defend in the first place. At that moment, Z2's very own hope was fading ever so slowly. It seemed that relying on such a thing would only get him killed from here on out. He watched as Death appeared and took away A10's body... was this really happening?

As death disappeared and people began to scatter and run, Z2 was left standing alone when Z12 told him to run as he himself ran off in any direction, "Wait, where are you going...?!" Z2 called after him. Clearly, there was no point of standing around so Z2 decided to run after Z12 as well. Sticking with at least one other squad member was probably the best move. He supposed that Hell did exist after all... they were in it.

Zeta 2 is Exiting to follow Zeta 12.

"Sorry about the little hiccup. I'll find your lost friends again too."

Alpha Twelve was left at a loss of words.. and actions. The mysterious scythe-wielding figure came and left. But for one rapturous moment, he had captured Alpha Twelve's attention like no other. He was everything she wanted. Cool, posed .. It seemed impossible, but in admidst of all the action, it seemed that Alpha's Twelve heart may have been swayed. just for a moment. Or perhaps, it was the sadness and the sudden appearance of the figure that closest resembled a hero that moved her heart.

But even that was fleeting. After all, hearts can only pound vigorously for so long.

The bodies were left unnoticed as Alpha Twelve clutched the precious bag to her chest once more, intending leaving the scene as others did. Eyes behind the goggle surveyed the scene, kneeling low to brush gloved fingers on the spot where the scythed figure stood. Where would she go?

Like Z4, she knew little others. Perhaps, the closest she had been to was Alpha Seven or Zeta Eight. Even those were nothing more than few lines or two. But she didn't know where they went. But .. she felt a wave of fatigue wash over her, her limbs feeling as if they would drop at any moment. Alpha Twelve's intent was to find a tree she could sleep under.. and the nearest tree had been burned to a crisp around here.

But not out there.

Alpha Nine watched as a majority of the Zetas turned and left the scorched stretch of sand where they had all confronted the death pony. She was half tempted to call out after them but no, they probably had enough red today. Red blood, red uniforms. Fighting and death. Yes, definitely more than enough red.

Shame about Alpha Ten, though. Alpha Seven seemed to be taking it particularly hard, worse than anyone else, it seemed. Or maybe not? Nine craned around to look back over at his direction again only to see him heading after one of the Zeta females who was leaving the area. "Huh. Already moving on to the next one?" she mused to no one in particular. She shook her head. Well, life goes on, she supposed. Good for him.

Nine looked around for her other remaining teammates. The survivors would probably be moving on soon too.... Nine blinked. Ten's body had disappeared! One moment it was just lying still and forlorn on the blackened sand, the next moment, it was as if the fog had spirited it away.

Nine shivered. The thought of dying didn't bother her overmuch but this... She recalled the mysterious hooded figure's words, promising to find their lost friends again. Did that mean that Ten would be coming back as a zombie??

For some inexplicable reason that thought unsettled Nine a little, like indigestion or a pebble in one's shoe. All of the sudden she didn't want to be alone. She noticed A-Eleven was standing nearby looking dazed and she scurried to the other woman's side.

"I...don't know." she answered A-Eleven's question. "Let's ask One? He'd know. Probably. Maybe. He's the de facto boss, anyway."

It took a few moments for Z9's brain to comprehend what has just happened. They'd been screwed over. Two deaths and a s**t load of injuries, all for nothing. No pendant, no knowledge, not even the pride of a victory.

Her mouth was firmly set into a tight line as she watched the other zeta team members head off along the beach. Sighing, she wandered after them like a sheep follow the herd. A mindless sheep who just doesnt want to think anymore.

A-Eleven had been watching the survivors start to wander away, disappearing in the mist. She was turning things that had been said over in her mind. She kept coming to one conclusion:This was a terrible place and more people would die.

That was the way it was going to be, and if she wanted to survive she had to accept that. She could mourn, but only for a moment. Though she didn't know if she could kill. Perhaps in self defense....I want to live.
Besides, with every moment that passed everything -the masks, the colors, the mists, the weapons- was beginning to feel less foreign. It was all she had ever really known, after all.

A-Nine appeared beside her. "You have a point. I suppose we could ask," Her voice was stronger than it had been a minute ago. Things got a lot easier when you just accepted that you couldn't change everything.

"How bout it, Alpha One? Any ideas? If we still have a team, that is." She looked at everyone who was still there. Would they be staying together?

Zeta Eleven fell unceremoniously to the ground. It wasn’t ceremonious, but it sure did ******** hurt. He winced, clutching his side, the dull ache of his burns reigniting into a blistering pain. How was the first aid kit supposed to heal that? Salve? What was he supposed to do, rub it on his armor? At least Alpha Ten didn’t have to put up with this anymore. It probably didn’t even hurt all that much when he shot her. Probably more of a fading sensation, the dull haze before sleep.

Hm. That was maudlin.

Eleven remained on the ground, watching Alpha Seven and Zeta Eight converse. They seemed to be done with him, as evidenced by the fact that they just walked away after trading a few meaningful sounding words, not one of them acknowledging the fact that he had made the right choice. If they hadn’t noticed, they were no longer being menaced by a twenty-foot tall demon horse. Maybe they didn’t have a pendant to show for their efforts, but neither did they have charred corpses. Being a stats man, Eleven would have chalked that one up in the ‘win’ column. Of course, whether or not the hooded figure had chased the beast away because he had killed Alpha Ten was still up for debate, but for once he could forgo arguing semantics.

“You’re welcome,” he said to no one in particular, certainly not addressing the few remaining squad members still lingering. He stood up, dusted himself off, and considered his next move. Something told him that ‘Jerk Who Shot Alpha Seven’s Girlfriend While She Was Passed Out’ was not a very tenable position within the group. Some people just couldn’t be reasoned with.

A plan? Sounded like a good idea, but A-One didn't have any ideas. But there were still people looking to him for leadership, and maybe - well, maybe he still had a chance to not screw things up any worse. He nodded silently to A-Seven, watched the other man follow Z-Eight off into the fog.

A-Three would think they were plotting against him. Well, A-One wasn't A-Three, and he was just going to trust that A-Seven would be back.

"Just a sec," he said to A-Eight, and looked back to the bodies on the beach. A-Five and A-Ten deserved some kind of burial, but that would probably have to be a group effort, and A-Seven deserved to be there for A-Ten's burial, anyway. A-Ten bowed his head slightly, closed his eyes, and folded his hands in prayer. He couldn't remember the words he was supposed to use, but he guessed that didn't matter too much. Instead, he hoped, in the direction of anything that might be listening, that his two teammates would get where they were going safely, and that where they were going wouldn't involve fire and pitchforks.

When he opened his eyes and dropped his hands again, the bodies were gone.

A-One stared for a moment. Then he shook his head. That took care of the burial problem, at least. He turned to A-Eleven as she asked her question. Ideas? Not really, but he wasn't going to say that aloud.

He took a deep breath and let it out. "First, I want to apologize," he said to the group. "I didn't really understand what I was asking when I suggested we draw straws. I don't think I've ever killed anyone. We're going to have to fight for our lives, that's clear, but I won't lie to you folks. I'm freaked out. But," he went on, "anybody who wants to stick around and help me - well, I'll do all I can to see that you don't get killed, for what that's worth."

He looked around, making sure to visibly look into each face. "I'm not gonna try and force anyone to team up. That was a mistake. A-Three had a point; not everyone can survive, and we're all going to have blood on our hands. A large group will break down and turn on itself. We just proved that." He sighed, looked at his feet, then back up. "I'm probably going to screw up again; I'm only human. But I'll do my damndest to protect whoever's with me."

"For now - well, it's not safe out in the open like this. We're way too visible. I'm going to head inland." He paused, added, "When A-Seven gets back, that is. I trust him, and I'm not gonna just leave him hung out to dry."

He rubbed his forehead, and remembered the mask again. Effin mask. Crowd psychology and leadership and all that bullcrap. Why had he volunteered himself for this again? Oh, right; because nobody else had. This was exhausting. When he got home, he was going to sleep for a week.

He really, really wished he could go home.

((UBER BELATED WRAP UP POST, jfkdalsjf oh my god Serigraphy all nighter what did you do to me. orz Z3's full HP was also halved by the fire, so he's at 15 now.))

Another sacrifice. It had wanted another sacrifice?

Though it never showed beyond a sharp frown of displeasure, Z3 felt a sudden spike of displeasure at the creatures words. It had nothing to do with the fact that another head might be on the chopping block; oh no, it was that the creature had broken it word by demanding more without yielding the prize. He couldn't say it was unexpected, of course. The beast reeked of duplicitous intentions and he couldn't even blame the more heated 'victims' from attacking it in turn. Hell, had it not been an incredible sense of restraint affixing his feet, he would have joined in the melee too--

And then the flames hit him. It was the first time he let out an audible hiss of pain, though no swearing curses followed, just some soft mumble too quiet to hear. Only then did he withdraw his stake to approach for entirely new personal reasons, but it seemed this too was never meant to be. Would they all be incinerated here, thanks to the foolishness of angering a Pony God Called Death?

... Huh. Apparently not.

Now that hood with the weapon reeked with near as much suspicion as anything, but Z3 was smart enough not to look a gift horse in the mouth, and for the moment, at least, the enemy of an enemy made them an... ally, sort of. Still lingering in the back, he kept his mouth shut and did nothing but listen to its words. Death was corrupted? That came as little surprise. But the cryptic warning of survival only playing on part in this game, well...

As quickly as it had come, the figure was gone, and the beast was still gone, and now, people were all disbanding in various states of shock, awe, and... wait. Wait. Where was Z8 heading? Of all the bodies to track, of all the motion to catch in his eye, it was that one that stuck with him. She was clearly going off to do something of... relevance, and immediately, suspicions grew.

Perhaps it was intrigue that belatedly compelled him off in the same direction, or perhaps it was some inward sense of paranoia, but he would be damned if he just sat there and allowed some under the table dealings to happen without him.

In silence, off he went.

Things had calmed down a bit. 'Death' was no longer staring them directly in the face (though she was sure that it was lingering in the mist somewhere) and they were discussing things. Yes, they had lost two members. Yes, the shaky alliance they'd had was broken. But for now they had time to gather themselves and decide on the next step.

For A-Eleven, the next step was simple. If she wanted to survive, she would have to be ready to fight. Mentally and emotionally. No more of this just watching stuff. She had to be ready to fight back, because she was still not ready to die.

"Alright," she nodded at A-One. "This is a new 'situation' for everyone, I think, so don't worry about being perfect. Try to survive. It's all we can do." She almost laughed. "Everyone is right, more will die. We just have to accept that some things will be beyond our own control." This was their reality now, and you can't run from reality.

"That said, we should try our best to survive. Someone has to make it, why not us?" The feeling of confidence that was growing was much more pleasant than the fear and grief from before.

"I'll follow you inland. As long as we don't go crazy on each other I think having backup could be an advantage. We don't know what or who we might run into."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:15 pm

"I-I'll, like, stick with you," Alpha-Two said, scooting closer to A-One now that A-Seven had gone off - she hadn't followed him, for once. Going off on your own was dangerous. Too dangerous. And she thought A-One could probably be trusted, at least.

For right now.

Others, though... she lowered her voice and leaned in towards A-One, whispering. "What about, like, that dude? Who shot her? Totally uncool." Really, it deserved stronger words, but she couldn't think of any at the moment.

"Thanks, A-Eleven." A-One nodded at her. "It should be a little better if we don't have to go it alone."

To A-Two, he said quietly, "I don't think he'll follow us. He's not welcome, anyway."

"Let's move up the beach, at least, away from here; we can decide what we're doing, but if anyone decides they want to attack someone and comes back, we'll be easy targets if we don't move." He looked around the group, then turned and started up the beach, away from the ocean.
