I went ahead and accepted the site coordinator job for the summer. I'm so excited! I'm talking with my friend who I grew up with and have done the program with. He's a house pastor this year, and this summer is going to be flipping awesome. I can't wait. Also found out my douchey ex best friend's little sister is doing it, but I love her so it's okay.
Can't wait heart

Happy Friday everyone! biggrin
I'm in a good mood, despite the fact that my parents have hijacked the vehicle I used since theirs in getting fixed, and thus has complicated my weekend.
I get to see my man today. 3nodding We're going out to eat at this great hippy island food restaurant that I love so much to meet two of his friends. I'm hoping to finally make a friend.
Then we're possibly stay at their house, and I guess they're gonna get my drunk? sweatdrop

Thanks Robbie biggrin It's not so much problem verses, it's more that, since it is a Christian program, about half the people there are pretty stream line and conservative which I'm just.... not. Last year one of the girls on my team said the whole reason she was doing the program was so she could teach the kids about God, which is noble and all. but that's just not something I can really get behind. I think there are so many more pressing issues- like being a good role model, showing these kids someone loves them, making sure they get a meal, and advocating for them when bad things happen. I think God can be seen through that, but I'm just uncomfortable impressing my personal beliefs on these kids and telling them it's the only right thing to believe, EVER.
I have no issue teaching them about the Bible and familiarizing them with it, I just feel uncomfortable with the whole "Believe in Jesus or go the hell" thing. Hence me being a religious pluralist. Sometimes difference in beliefs can cause issues, and I'm worried my unorthodox beliefs may cause my teammates to disrespect me or something. It's probably an unfounded fear, but it's all good. I'm sure the summer will be great. I know I've got a lot of support if I run into issues.

What's the modern definition of "Hell"? The absence of YHVH, right? Isn't every other possible afterlife technically "Hell" in that regard? And isn't being away from YHVH just a bad thing if you worship YHVH while we are at it? If the kids you have are smart, they'll pick up on that.

`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven. Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore - I actually finished a section in Living Buddha, Living Christ, that goes over the whole "You need to accept Jesus or this will happen cause Jesus said he is the only way to God" verse.
How Thay explained it is that you don't need to accept Jesus as a person. Being a Christian in Jesus' name is about as foolish as being a Buddhist in Buddha's name only. The verse is saying that you need to accept Jesus' life. In other words you need to do the things that he did in his life. A simplier way of explaining it is doing what Jesus in a sense did : Loving God, Loving your neighbor.
That's what people get so hung up on about is that in order to be "saved" all you have to do is accept Jesus, the person and still act like a jackass, but it's a foolish concept.
Another way that Thay explained it is that Jesus is door, much like teachers, and even the Buddha is a door. In Buddhism there are 84k Dharma doors, but only one Dharmakaya or body of Dharma, which is the true body of the Buddha's teachings. The Law of Agape in it's own way is a Dharmakaya, being the true body of Christ's teachings. Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

Yeah sad Gnostic Peter "For many will accept our teaching in the beginning. And they will turn from them again by the will of the Father of their error, because they have done what he wanted. And he will reveal them in his judgment, i.e., the servants of the Word. But those who became mingled with these shall become their prisoners, since they are without perception. And the guileless, good, pure one they push to the worker of death, and to the kingdom of those who praise Christ in a restoration. And they praise the men of the propagation of falsehood, those who will come after you. And they will cleave to the name of a dead man, thinking that they will become pure. But they will become greatly defiled and they will fall into a name of error, and into the hand of an evil, cunning man and a manifold dogma, and they will be ruled without law."

rmcdra What's the modern definition of "Hell"? The absence of YHVH, right? Isn't every other possible afterlife technically "Hell" in that regard? And isn't being away from YHVH just a bad thing if you worship YHVH while we are at it? If the kids you have are smart, they'll pick up on that. That's the thing- I don't even really believe in hell. I mean, I acknowledge it probably exists in some form, but I honestly to know what it entails, nor do I care to know. I also have a fundamental problem with a devout person of another faith, who has been humble, prayerful, faithful, and serves others going to hell because they worship a "different" God than me.
I dunno. So many world religions have similar tenants and beliefs about God, I've kind of come to the conclusion that most faiths are worshiping the same God I am, just under and different name with different ideas. I think a Hindu is just as in turn with God as I am, and that God is big enough to encompass almost all other faiths.
I want to teach the kids there are people who love and care about them, and that they can make their lives better than they are right now. I think belief in God is good for them, because it gives them a good direction and leads to a fulfilling life, but that's never my overt goal. I want to show them how much I love them, and then maybe they'll see the love of God through me that way.
@Ravynne: OMG. That's amazing. I need to read this book.
