Things had gotten worse before they got better, but now that they were better, J'aro felt he could turn his attention away from the hatching to tend to other matters. F'sey was still off pouting amongst the "other" Wingleaders. That bothered him (for some reason), so he whispered to Bekar that he would return and left his dearest Wherhandler.

Brambel's body had been moved to the far right, placed with the second set of Wingleaders who were older and wiser; more capable of looking at the horrific corpse than the tender eyes of the candidates. Stressful as it was, they had no choice but to wait for one of the healers to reach them and go from there.

Green Harth had just Impressed to Iafri when they all felt the ground rumble.

Everything happened so fast from there.

The more quick-witted candidates and guests immediately fled, shoving and pushing their way toward the entrance. Wasn't one stampede enough for a night?

J'aro heard a female screaming and had just enough time to wonder if it was the goldrider yelling at her dragon. If so, the mother would not be moved. She was not blind to the dangers; they just weren't enough compared to her beloved eggs. Faithfully she crouched down and wrapped her tail around them, in the process blocking some of the Wingleaders trying to run past her.

The grassy floor toward the back of the hatching grounds gave way, resembling a sinkhole played in fast-forward. Those that had tried to run (including J'aro after he had grabbed F'sey's hand) but not made it beyond the gold would fall.

The queen and her rider were buried. Many of the Wingleaders and the Master were buried. Some of the dragons that been observing went between, an ominous, undeniable sign some of the men and women had been crushed.

But all hope was not lost. After all, the grounds were located above the weyrs. Some of them must have survived somehow, right?

Why had the grounds collapsed to begin with? Were the tunnelsnakes causing that much trouble below ground that the added weight of all the visitors became too much?

Most importantly...

What of Gold Prigdith and Felena? Had they succumb to the avalanche of rocks and dirt?

Was there only the blackrider and her dragon now?

FFFFFFFFFFFF-

User Image

The above "graph" shows where the damage is done. Everything inside the red has now collapsed, and the people in have either been crushed or are now trapped in the weyrs below, caved in.

The goldrider and her dragon (as well as the remaining eggs) have all fallen. This is a serious problem for obvious reasons.

The Whitemaster and half the Wingleaders are also down.

The (new) Whermaster and the Guardmaster were on the right side and thus are fine.

All the candidates and guests are fine. All the whers are fine. All the dragons are fine except those whom had their riders killed.

Eek!

Ffffffffffff-

X'nar stared dumbly at the scene of chaos before him. Wasn't one disaster enough for the night, his stunned mind wondered?

After only a few moments, however, the white rider recovered himself and sprung out of the stands for the second time that night; the Whitemaster was down there somewhere, and he was damned between if he was going to miss a chance to help him if he needed it. They were the sharding White Guard, and they sharding well stuck together.

He had to shove a few dumb candidates out of his way, but before too long he was standing as close to the collapse as he dared. Had they fallen through into the weyrs below, or were they stuck buried? He'd seen a few dragons vanish between, but as whites weren't allowed at hatchings he couldn't tell by that whether or not J'aro had been killed.

"Shards," X'nar muttered as he stared down into the mess of sunken ground, "now what?"

'Lioth! come back here right no...' C'nor's mental command was cut short as the ground rumbled beneath them and concern about his dragon acting up turned into concern for his well being as a second stampede of scared candidates rushed towards them from the hatching grounds where the Queen, her rider and the eggs ..even a good deal of those behind them had disappeared.

"Lioth!" C'nor shouted at his hatching , rushing towards him and directing he little brown to the side and out of the path of the scared masses. 'Oh mine...' Lioth bespoke him as the dust cleared and the damage became apparent 'We must go and help' The little brown declared. "How do you expect us to do that Lioth? Your far to small to help" C'nor pointed out "And the ground could still be unstable.." He further pointed out.

When all the dust settled, F'sey was out cold somewhere below the earth, only J'aro (hopefully) to keep him company.

F'SEYMINE. MINE! Ialluth screamed. Suddenly, the small green dragon did not care for the rules of Hatching. Hers was missing.

I am coming, dear. Mine! SOMEONE HELP ME! the desperate creature wailed, digging frantically at the the hole that had consumed her boy.

Bekar, still dazed by Brambel's sudden death, had merely nodded when J'aro moved off to collect the sullen 'wingleader'. It felt somehow disloyal to leave Brambel's body, but there wasn't much he could do now, and he supposed he would be more useful keeping an eye on the hatching grounds in case of any more disasters.

The disaster which came was shocking. Bekar was just far away enough to escape the collapse, but he staggered and went to his knees when the ground moved.

J'aro!

The queen!

Bekar rushed towards the edge of the cave-in and tried to skirt around to where J'aro had fallen, dodging through the crowd. Someone else would have to keep them corralled. The useless Guardmaster, hopefully. Bekar was more concerned about the riders (and Brambel's body...) had been swallowed up into the ground. Spotting X'nar, he called to the man. "X'nar! Can Faladeth tell if Rajanth is still alive?" He had no idea if the whites could communicate, or would tell their riders if they did, but it was worth a shot. He knelt at the ground and leaned against the rocks, trying to listen. Surely the living and wounded would be crying and yelling.

Beksk was surely not the only dragon or wher that was singlemindedly heading towards where the queen and her eggs had been buried. After a moment's hesitation, fearing to accidentally crush an egg, Beksk seized a large rock and began dragging it back away from the heap, trying to clear a path to the queen.

Mine will help you dig, Ialluth! He called to the green.

Bekar, bemused at suddenly finding himself digging alongside a green dragon, did just that.

There was no Sharding way Prigdith was going to allow herself to be killed by something as simple as a rockfall.

The massive Gold coiled tighter around her eggs and roared her fury, eyes whirling deep red. This was an outrage! How had this happened to her Clutch? She had kept the rest of the clutch as safe as possible, using her considerable bulk as a shield, but now she raised her head and let her anger be known. First a lowly tunnelsnake had claimed one of HER daughters, and now she was in a pit with her remaining eggs and a bunch of dimglows! Prigdith bared her teeth at the wall of rubble and ignored the keening sense of some of her brethren going between forever, more focused on keeping Hers and her eggs safe throughout all of this.

FELENA. Prigdith growled to her rider, locating the now rather dirtied girl close by. Girl! Get something done about this! I would tear us out of this Sharding pit myself, were it not for my eggs! Felena was still somewhat disoriented from the fall, and wasn't really in the mood to answer her enraged dragon's commands at the moment.

V'di felt his stomach drop along with the ground. No. No no no no no, this couldn't be happening--this was a nightmare, plain and simple. Kinth huddled close by, watching the cloud of dust rising from the new pit. Come on, Mine, we can help! She was on her feet and bounding towards the rubble in a flash, no doubt thinking of some way to make this an adventure. The hatchling began digging near Ialluth, and soon V'di came along and started to assist. Obviously, the Green's rider was still alive under there, but that could change if things stayed the same. V'di paused for a moment and took a deep breath, letting that solid concentration wash over him. He was ready for this now, and he tore into the pile with all his strength alongside his dragon.

"Well ******** on a ******** ********," Ren swore once her mouth wasn't too dry to speak.

She also continued to stare, not quite dumbfounded, at the destruction which she'd somehow escaped with minimal damage. Oh, she wasn't completely unscathed, since the percussive nature of the falling rock had thrown her backward off her feet and given her a nasty bit of sandburn when she landed - a disadvantage of wearing a robe tailored to show skin.

"Someone should do something," she announced to no one in particular.

Finally tearing her gaze from the unexpected rockslide-avalanche-gravity attack-thing, she looked at her fellow candidates and the guests. They didn't seem to be harmed, and she wasn't really either, she decided as she got to her feet and brushed herself off.

"We need to do something," she repeated, louder. She didn't know what, exactly, since moving rocks on top could cause rocks below to shift and possibly endanger the people trapped there.

Ren'd seen a few others moving to shift rocks, and though she didn't think she'd be much help without draconic or at least a wher's aid, she moved in that direction, ready to help if someone would tell her what they wanted her to do.

...Hu. That was F'sey's dragon, right? F'sey had been pretty close to J'aro... This was a sharding stupid idea. Groaning internally, but remaining outwardly cool, X'nar scrambled down into the pit after the small green. Staying back far enough only to be out of claw range, the white rider waves his arms in an attempt to get her attention. "Careful," he bellowed, "dig carefully! You might hurt somebody!" In her panicked state she probably wouldn't even hear him, let alone listen, but if J'aro came up shredded at least he could say he'd tried to get the poor daft dragon to be sensible...

Shards.

What were they going to do? There was so much earth to dig out, no way of telling where anyone was, and there might well be a living very large very angry queen down there. He was possibly standing right on top of a Queen dragon consumed by fear for her eggs who might well burst out of the earth in a flurry of claws and jaws any moment... Yea, that was certainly her roaring.

He really needed a drink...

Bekar! As the wherhandler (whermaster that was) called to him, he straightened up with a grimace. "I don't know," he admitted, "she's going mad right now, so I doubt she knows anything much. Even if she did know, she wouldn't communicate it to me." Shard it all; this was one of the few times he had ever seriously regretted the nature of white dragons, he wanted to know if he was looking for a breathing man, or just another corpse... Oh, and there was the Queen dragon and the unhatched eggs, and the other people who'd been buried too; it would be good to know something of their status, other than the fact that the Queen was alive and angry.

Oh, sharding idiots. This just wasn't going to do. As much as he didn't want to...

Swallowing unhappily, Gaurdmaster Sesabal appeared from his hiding spout amongst the older, wiser of the Wingleaders. (At least the smart ones hadn't been crushed...)

"People, people!" he cried, raising his hands as he delicately picked his way towards the scene of the cave in. "We must calm down and work together. Digging like this will only get someone killed! We must save the Queen first! Save the Queen!"

(Wasn't he just so clever?)

Ialluth paused momentarily when a bronze wher joined her. She did not recognize him, but that did not matter. Thank you... Resuming her frantic digging, she only pushed a few more rocks away from the edge of the hole when a silly flapping man caught her attention. The dragon hesitated.

Mine? she called, but felt no answer. Nothing.

Keening miserably, she continued to hesitate, shifting anxiously. Mine? Where is Mine?! she asked everyone, and no one in particular.

X'nar, who had started hefting around some chunks of earth that were small enough for him to manage, shot the approaching man a very dark glare. Of all the mincing, silly, spineless, brainless, pathetic excuses for a Guardmaster... How had the idiot even got the job anyway? He could do a better job with his eyes shut, one hand tied behind his back, and totally smashed.

"Alright then Guardmaster!" he called. "What's the plan? What about buckets to fill up with earth and pass out of the hole?" He knew nothing at all about earthworks or anything of the kind, but at least he'd had a sharding idea other than 'oooh we must save the queen, but only after I do my nails~' "Any miners around here?" the white rider muttered as he bent to start rolling a large rock out of the pit; while he waited for the 'plan' he might as well keep himself moving.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 19, 2010 5:15 pm

Ren decided that while the Guardmaster was correct, no one was really stepping up to take charge and direct everyone else. With a green dragon pawing frantically at the rocks, it seemed like someone would have to. The dark-eyed young woman was relieved to hear that whiterider - X'nar? - question what they were supposed to do.

"I'm not a miner, but I can help move stones," she volunteered, indifferent to the potential damage to her carefully shaped and smoothed nails. "Someone just tell me which ones and where to put them. "And should someone maybe try to get in from below?"

Not that asking the whiterider these things would do any good, but maybe someone with actual authority would hear her and direct someone to do that. Or, you know, she could do that on her own, but she was reluctant to leave the hatching ground. All thoughts of Impression had gone from her mind, but this was where all the action was taking place, and she wanted to stay there. Unless there was more action happening elsewhere.

For her part, Ash was feeling pretty useless. Jumping down into the pit was dumb, dangerous, and she wouldn't be of any significant help... So she was standing here. At the sound of the Guardmaster's voice, she turned swiftly; usually she liked to do things her own way but when she had no idea what her own way was, she was happy enough to take direction...

Save the Queen.

Right.

No s**t.

Maybe somebody else would have something smart to say. She sharding hoped so; there were people down there, and the Queen, and unhatched eggs... Shards. She hoped they were alright; there had been more than enough tragedy already today. There had been more than enough tragedy the moment the tunnelsnake had first attacked the brave little green dragonet...

That little b***h.

Even in the midst of this horror story, the sight of Ren managed to make Ash's mood just that little bit sourer. Pausing only to sneer at the back of her pretty head, Ash strode up towards the edge of the pit. "Right," she growled, "me too; where do we start?" She might hate Ren with the burning fiery passion of a thousand suns, but she'd work beside her if it meant saving people. Also, she didn't want Ren to be able to say she'd saved they day while she just stood there.

Xanthoth had made damn sure B'lin was alright before anything else. He could never be so mad at His something like this could happen without him worrying. No rank, Wingleader or otherwise, was worth turning a blind eye.

B'lin was fine -- aside from being in a state of panic, demanding he ask Ialluth where F'sey was. As Xanthoth would soon point out, at the very least, he had to still be alive.

The bronze was for once glad to be small since it meant his added weight was minimal compared to his larger brothers. He was still cautious about moving with the ground so unstable, though.

Illauthlovely, he called from a distance. Calm down. You must be calm. Yours must be all right.

The initial rumbling of the earth had not bothered Mairin too much but then in a matter of seconds there was screaming and the queen bellowing and chaos worse than before. It was almost surreal watching the lit ground around the queen and eggs suddenly vanish taking all who were near with them down. Shock and fear flooded the girl and she had no idea if they were her own feelings, Curith's or a mixture of the two.

Something had to be done but Mairin was not keen on joining the surge of people rushing to where the queen had been, the ground in that immediate area might not be stable yet and there were too many large bodies frantically digging that might accidentally step on Curith in their panic. Maybe from inside the Weyrs then, still dangerous as they'd be underground if there was another collapse but likely to be less crowded. Besides not all of the underground could be compromised right?

Mairin grabbed one of the glow baskets used to light the feeding table as she climbed to her feet and ran away from the grounds themselves. " Curith follow me," she called back to her dragon. Not that it was necessary as Curith was right on her heels, eyes whirring faster than ever.

We HAVE to save them mine and find more healers, there are so many hurt people! Curith followed Hers away from the others and hoped they would be okay. Grass and dirt gave way to stone as both females left the hatching grounds and made it down into the Weyrs. Curith hoped as hard as she could that they could save someone.
