Sen hadn't heard Balin tell his brother to stay there. Even if she had, who cared? It wasn't her problem if he got in trouble for not listening, and the temptation to get closer was only growing stronger. But she was curious, not stupid, so even at 'closer' she planned to stay at a respectable distance. If the rest of the hatchlings took after the first two... Eesh. "Yeah, let's go." She didn't think twice about snatching Bachi's hand and tugging him toward the wandering blue. On the way, she encountered both her 'other roommate' and best friend. Though she passed only a nod of recognition to Kesslan she may not even have seen, Nasundu was greeted with a loud cry of, "Drum girl, come on! We're getting a closer view!"

Nathail catches a glimpse now of the blue when a few candidates ahead of him shift to give it a wider birth. Oh shells.. this one looked angry too. But not as menacing, at least. And a blue. Well, the color wasn't really that surprising. Blues were more common than the larger ones after all. He edges back a bit himself, just in case.

Alirien's gaze focuses on the blue as well, having somewhat a clearer view with the candidates around him not being too tall. Oh, the blue was small a bit wasn't he. But such a pretty color. But he looked to be mad too, if the orange in those eyes was any warning, poor thing.

Zafir half stumbled onto the sands, knowing full and well that he'd managed to be unforgivably late. For the roars of the crowd, he guessed two, or three, shards, maybe even more, eggs had already hatched, and he'd been busy jumping in and out of clothes and getting miserably lost. It was his own fault, really, not paying more attention to the layout of Weyr before. He'd pay more attention later, and make a point of never getting lost again, but at least it had been easy enough to follow the flow of the Weyr's population, leading inexorably to the hatching grounds.

And weren't they supposed to go and meet the eggs first? Touch them and whatever, to make sure they weren't completely boggled at this event? His bare feet hit the extreme heat of the sand, and his flinched. But, his breaths evened out. Now, it was just a matter of not being trampled, scarred or brutally massacred. Even as his heart raced, he felt his mind growing calmer. Stress and immediate danger, he could handle. It was the waiting that had led to this moment that had been hardest for him.

He wondered idly what colors had already burst into life while he was dressing, but concerned himself more with a slow, steady pace, moving around the edges, still blinded by the throngs of other candidates. He wasn't worried, though perhaps he should have been. It was too late for any difference to be made. If he impressed, then he did, and if he did not, then as long as he wasn't dead, he could count the event as a success.

Just as long as he kept moving, slowly, his weird levelheadedness would stick to him. Panic, at the very least, would do neither him nor anyone he happened to be near any good.

K'em didn't impress La much, but not many men did. That was, of course, no reason to be impolite. Besides, it was K'em. People had bets on him sleeping with Cordel. It was rather nice to be formally introduced to him beyond some sort of vague 'Don't let him get to you' warning from Cordel. "Hey yourself," she answered with a pleasant smile, reaching out and taking his hand.

"I can't say I've heard all that much about you, but perhaps Cordel is just keeping it for later."

Silute hadn't even been at the Weyr for more than a few sevendays, and the first Hatching he was to participate in... everything was so violent. Part of him wanted to go back home, maybe trying to bargain his way back into being apprenticed in the beastcraft (despite how horrid he was with it), and the other part of him just wanted to run. If trying to become a dragonrider meant going through this, and possibly getting mauled to bloody bits, he was sure he wanted a safer career path. Maybe he was just destined to fail in becoming a dragonrider as well. It wouldn't be completely different from his past attempts at finding a place in society, so he wouldn't be too bummed out.

The only thing that kept him there was that running out now would draw attention to him, and he was very content to stand still, right where he was, as if that would keep any dragonets from turning him into a pile of bloody pieces of meat and innards. Silute shuddered, not really the fearful type, but these angry dragonets were dangerous, and weren't to be taken lightly, that was for certain.

There was someone getting close.

The delicate blue whirled on Jessan, eyes whirling red as the snarl became increasingly clearer. He did not anyone close to him! He struck out blindly, claws raking across the boy and no sooner did he strike did the Arabian retreat. He did not want anyone close. He could not trust anyone! He could not anyone, not anyone but His. He could not find his! He gave a pathetic squeak and jumped, as though he was surprised he made that noise. How could he make such a noise?

Straightening himself, the blue stood in front of all the males the picture of grace as eyes orange began to size them up, one by one. Not worthy. No. No. The dragon sighed, anger fading into general irritation. Where was His? This was wasting time! Plopping himself down, he gave the crowd another unimpressed look.

Malmine, your Redhath is tired of playing this stupid game. He wants to get out of here. He wants to eat and he wants no one else to touch him. The blue gave a sniff and raised his head haughtily. Malmine? I said now.

Nessariah
Smiling almost wickedly, Inaari watched the second girl in the group wander in a hurried daze towards her new Bonded. A queen was every girl Candidate's dream, but THIS queen? Nightmares would be associated with this girl for a long time to come. Perhaps that was appropriate, considering the entire aura around this Hatching.

Shaking her head, brown eyes lit on a familiar stocky form. He was reclining, having been mauled! "Goran!" Startled, the Hold girl scooted gracefully across the Sands, and before long was hovering over the injured young man. "Oh, did the brown get you? Oh I'm so sorry! Are you ok? You look somewhat ok to me, but still!" Wispy hair floated around them both as she flitted about him like an anxious hen.

And then suddenly, she sobered, and looked at him seriously. "Does it hurt when it happens?" As if she felt somehow guilty, or that she did something wrong, hanging back from the fray.

A sudden piping of his name was enough to make him cringe and forget the wiggling egg on the darkened sands, peering through the shadows to glance down at the small girl. He didn't remember her name, and frowned slowly until it dawned on him. Inaari. "M'fine." He almost growled, but didn't look at her as though that'd keep his gruff behavior at bay. Why had she sought him out, of all people? There were plenty of other wounded to fuss over...

Her question, however, made him pause and eye her a bit more closely. Better to lie, or tell the truth? "It hurts." He said finally, broad shoulders twitching upward in a shrug. "Better me than you." She didn't look like she'd be able to take a blow at all, and Goran wasn't eager to test that theory. But then the egg split, and an orange-eyed blue clumsily pulled itself from its shell.

Those eyes were foreboding, and Goran warily widened his stance. Another unhappy dragonet? It sharding figured. The hit connected, and he winced hard, watching as the snooty creature made its way to one of the boy's the brown had taken out. Goran's shoulders heaved with another sigh.

It really did figure.

Merik's attention was on the Blue, but not with the same raptness it had stuck to the Brown. He caught a glimpse of purple-tinted hair out the corner of his eye, and looked around the catch a familiar face just now picking his way through the door. Unimaginably late! Merik chuckled a little; he'd have to get the full story at the feast later. For the time being, he floated back through a row of Candidates, trying to get up against the wall and wave at Zafir without attracting too much attention from the Stands. They were all probably watching the Blue anyway... Merik gave a few emphatic motions for the other boy to come join him, but wasn't sure he could even be seen in the dark. He stayed with his body facing Zafir, but kept his eyes turned over his shoulder at the furtive Hatchling.

Vaythel let out an audible sigh of relief as the Blue came near the males, seeing that he didn't look like he was going to start tearing into people. That was a good sign. He watched as the blue chose Hish with a smile, silently congratulating the newly-formed pair. It looked like things were mellowing out somewhat, but Vaythel was a bit nervous that the first two hatchings had set the tone for the others to play by. If this continued on with maulings and rampages, Vaythel would be quite hard pressed to tell his old master about it.

Watching the blue lash out at a candidate boy that got too close only confirmed to Terisa that she was staying away from any dragonet unless she heard their call in her mind. She had seen enough blood already, and only three dragons had hatching! It was going to be a busy night in the infirmary if the preceding events were any indication of the future. Thankful that she had wisely given the blue space when he first hatched, the weaver girl looked down at her hands nervously. She wasn't sure what the hope for. If she did impress, she was quite fearful that her dragonet would be unhappy with how timid she was, since it was looking like all the dragons of this hatching were going to have strong personalities, but she really did was to have a best friend for life.... Sighing, she shoved her hands behind her back, partially in protection, since being a weaver meant that her hands were very valuable to her, and focused her eyes on the rest of the clutch, waiting for another egg to start shaking....

And it seemed that this blue had taken the whole idea of 'Impressing' nice, making sure that it kept the undesired at a distance (good thing she was making sure to be backed off from all) and just sizing up all around it.

Then again, this Dragonet didn't have anybody to compete with. This didn't make Alanna any less anxious over everything that was happning in front of her however. She just had to.. watch.. wait......... But it seemed that with that simple impression it was done.

Alanna sighed with relief at the sight. Excellent. So an impression could go along more smoothly than...... what had just happened. But no matter, she still had to keep her eyes peeled... which they were, her attention turned to the eggs once again.

The eggs..
.....

What would be next?

Whatever false calm Canth had allowed herself dissolved in an instant when the little blue lash out to snag some boy who'd gotten too close. It wasn't the worst lunging out she had seen thusfar (in fact, he was only because the boy had gotten too close it seemed), but it was still enough to make a heart jump before the creature zipped away, obviously on a mission to find his Mine...

Truly, the creature didn't seem at all pleased; if anything, it radiated an aura of haughty irritation. Still, there was obviously someone in the ranks he wanted, and he wanted right then, which meant the short-lived terror would be ending as quick as it had started.

So that was three down now, she counted quietly: queen, brown and blue. How many more eggs to go, with ZERO peaceful hatchlings to date?

Chavel clapped wildly and smiled so wide it seemed liable to burst off his face at that, giving the flit in his collar a chipper headscratch once the dragonet's lifemate was obvious and stepping forth. "My, goodness! That was much less stressful than the last two, don't you think, darling?"

Once again, Pavo just whirled his little eyes and kept quiet.

An over emotional response. How predictable. Did Cordel always have to answer any comments – or even compliments for that matter – with a nasty snarl? Perhaps he should encourage the Healer to come up with some original and witty responses. Or maybe Cordel was just going easy on him since he'd been sick. He didn't like that thought much.

W'ten raised an eyebrow at his companion, his usual response to Cordel's replies. "I was not aware that being in the same vicinity of my roommate and friend while he is standing near you was considered 'stalking', but if the definition has changed since we have arrived at Ista do enlighten me." At the mention of Cordel's apprentice, the brownrider let his gaze shift to La. A capable girl, but the looks of it, not a silly greenrider as one might have expected. She was, however, a little more masculine than W'ten thought Cordel preferred but he kept that comment to himself.

... On second thought, why keep his observations to himself? "Your apprentice has an unusual appearance for her gender."

Oh, there he was! It was about time too. Miah drew herself up and gave him her best "where have you been young man" stare. Her mother had perfected that look turns ago and she was happy to say that she was close to mastering it. Still, Balin had come to get her, and she wasn't going to be an ungrateful wench. Just a partially unimpressed one. She took his offered hand as though it was offered to her with entirely good intentions, and then proceeded to take her role as leader and drag Balin back up to the spot he had previously occupied.

Naturally, she was quite surprised to find that Bachi wasn't there. "Where's your brother?" Miah demanded, scouting around for him. "I thought he'd be with you."

~

Nasunda, on the other hand, perked up instantly when she heard her favourite nickname. Or rather, her only nickname, but what difference did it make. "There you are Sen! I thought you'd gotten lost in the crowd!" She sidled up beside her friend, draping an arm casually over Sen's shoulder as they walked. "I swear, sometimes, the front and the back of this joint looks the same to me. What with all this sand, you know? Who's this one?" She suddenly realised that there was another person with them.

Oh, another Impression! And so fast! Only one poor fellow torn up by the Blue, and that didn't even seem so bad. Maybe those first two were just bad eggs... pardon the pun. He smiled and laughed a little in his head. The blue was very pretty indeed, he'd enjoy watching it grow. He didn't recognize the new Weyrling, but clapped loudly nonetheless. Lucky, lucky boy.

"YES!" S'van exalted, his earlier worries over his friend for the moment swept away by his jubilation. And then realization hit him, and he could've kicked himself, but oh Faranth he was still thrilled. "Yes, yes, Maaaal!" he crowed, so happy that now all of his friends save little Inaari had Impressed. Every last one of them, he thought. "Marko! Marko, put me down!" Of course, in the next moment Marko did, and then Vera felt quite silly. Mine, is your friend Aeron's? Galliath asked from the risers, peering down at the lad who had just Impressed. He is now Redhath's. Will Aeron be pleased? Oh Shards. No, Aeron probably wouldn't be pleased. Ah well. That really was such a gorgeous little male.

--

"Lookit, Dol! He Impressed!" Only... only he'd also mauled someone too. Oh no! Did that mean that Blues were just as violent as Queens? Kagiya held herself up right, not at all scared. ... Or so she told herself. Inside, she was pretty scared too. Really, they couldn't be blamed for being frightened. "Mommy said we're not s'pposed to go to Hatchings, but we gots to see 'em! 'Simportant." And they were important, too. They'd prove that to everyone, soon enough.
