"I'm failing to see this as a problem, guys," Johnstone pointed out, lighting a fire for light. "They just locked us in where we want to be. All we have to do is punch a hole in their numbers, punch a hole in the queen, and punch a hole in the ceiling. This really didn't change anything." Johnstone considered the possibility of a trap of some sort, but no matter what, the Hivelings had just made a stupid, stupid decision. Trapped people fought harder; those with escape routes ran. If they wanted them out, they should've left the hole.

Victor laughed breathily, in disbelief. "Guys...I'm everywhere right now. You have no idea how good this feels. Holy s**t."

They heard him teleporting at a machine-gun speed and giggling to himself. It was safe to say that he didn't care what course of action they took at this point.

Anolani let out a sigh. "Don't let this distract you Victor." Power corrupted, and she had a feeling that he'd be easily corrupted. Eh. So would I if I didn't already have a set goal.

She started to move forward while continuing her fighting with relative ease. "So. Who's punching the hole in the wall?" As fun as killing the Spitters were, they really needed to keep going forward.

Victor emerged from the ground beside Anolani, chuckling. "Sorry, sorry. I guess you guys just can't get it. To me, right now, this is like swimming in an ocean of pure magic. I think I might actually be invincible right now."

Even as he said it, he winced. Victor knew that there were others out there - Legion - that would end his life in a picosecond if he had an attitude like that. That was far more sobering a thought than Anolani's scolding. He settled in silently, halfway sulking.

He couldn't exactly blow a hole in a wall. His power was much more focused and subtle. He'd have to leave it to someone else.

Unless...

"Back in a sec!" he chattered happily, and before anyone could stop him he was gone, teleporting his way down one of the tunnels that the bugs had come from in an attempt to see what might be down there.

Victor felt a painful interference - the feeling of try to emerge into a shadow that wasn't there. The tunnel didn't just have the entrance sealed; it was at least halfway closed already.

Victor returned from his excursion sulkily, but his attitude remained dark only briefly. He decided to try something he had wanted to attempt for many years, but had never been in a situation to try before.

It was amazing how one could forget something so simple until the last moment.

In the complete darkness of the underground, Victor extended his magical vision as far as he could - in the shadows, here outside of the Earth Sphere, that should be very far indeed. His hope was that he could determine where, if anywhere, they were supposed to go.

At first, Victor felt as though he was feeling the veins of a creature - his own veins, no, everyone's, no - the veins of the land itself.

The tunnels stretched for miles; their current location wasn't even near the center. They all seemed to radiate from one central point, a series of twisting and interlocking chambers that sank into the depths of the very land. If there was a likely destination for their target, that was it.

Victor explained to them what he saw as they stood in the darkness, trying to decide what to do.

The next step was to determine the fastest way to get to the center, their target. That done, he would identify any obstacles in their way (not counting enemy troops) and point them out to those that could deal with them.

"Point me a direction and I'll work on blowing a hole in the wall, or manipulating one," Johnstone told Victor. "What we can't destroy we can hopefully work around."

Blowing up a wall was more or less a two-step process, in Johnstone's mind. He had four elements to work with, and ignoring any one of them was stupid. With Earth, he could try to narrow the section that needed blowing up, or create cracks to weaken the structure. Air and water could both be used to shape a detonation. The use of water this way was not a new invention made by mages; in fact, conventional explosives sometimes used water as a shaping material. Finally, Fire could provide detonation, or heat up materials that would break more easily at higher temperatures. Combining the four elements allowed Johnstone to accomplish more with less mana wasted, and if all else failed he had demons who were plenty good at blasting their way through things.

For the moment, though, he waited to be given a direction to break through, instead focusing on the dwindling number of insects that still remained in the room.

Once alight, Rose was able to tear into her victims with ease - something she went about efficiently and ruthlessly, fighting her way towards the exits as they were being sealed. Thinking quickly, she shouted out to Johnstone and jammed her claws into one of the exit tunnels and began letting the Builders' magic work against itself, preventing the tunnel from closing completely. "I can reverse the effect, but only until something kills me," she said, keeping her eyes on those warriors that were backing down the tunnel away from her and blocking the retreating slashes aimed at her.

Miles of tunnels. Being sealed off. Rose's fur bristled. Damn it, she didn't like to be underground. But foxes would burrow to get to eggs and rats; if she needed to dig a little for bugs, she'd grin and bear it.

Making sure that there was enough light in the tunnels was a lot harder than it looked. Anolani had to carefully time the mucus explosions to maintain some amount of constant light. "Good thing nothing's gonna kill you then, isn't it?" It was hard to keep an eye on both Rose and the few Spitters left, but she could handle it. She'd make sure that nothing would happen to her teammates.

"Johnstone, Victor. Any day now." She wanted to get moving. She was getting her practice with timing and angles, but it wasn't a part of the mission. "Let's get going please?"

Victor identified each tunnel that was hidden by the growing rock, highlighting them with his magic so that Johnstone and the others could see their possible routes. They needed to move fast, as the Elemental mage informed them, because the walls were thickening as they waited.

Directly above was the thinnest area by far, but they could still break through into the existing tunnels if they hurried. If they wanted to complete their mission, that was the fastest way.

Anolani moved along with the rest of the group and waited for someone to post something that has to do with moving the story along.

As Anolani, who appeared to be the only one paying attention, made short work of the few builders who were still trying to overwhelm Rose's capacity to reverse their magic, the werefox shouted to the rest of the team. "We have an open route right here. We move now or they realize it's still open and stampede us. Miss Anolani, may I have a light?" With that, she disappeared inside the tunnel she had kept open, her black fur nearly invisible in the darkness.

Crunch

Well, there went that option. They'd taken too long and the weakness had been dealt with.

"So what now?" Morgan's voice echoed in the darkness.
