And Gensokyo needs a desert, now that I'm thinking of it. So I can be a desert youkai.
If it exists parallel to the "normal" world, then there should be more than just some mountains and a lake, right? It would be strange to be traversing the land, only to find that you've come to a sudden lack of existance beyond a certain point. If you can go as far as the moon...
