I have so many names it's insane. xD

I come from lots of different cultures so it's difficult to find one that resonates with me. My totem is wolf, so my names tend to focus on that aspect. I do not call myself Wiccan anymore - I've gone back to my Hindi roots. ^^; But because I am half-Irish I have non-sanskrit names too.

I've used Lupa, Feronia, Aelfwulf, and Okamiko. All words for "Wolf." <3 When it comes to Kali Puja, I use the name Suhaila. My pen names include Sharda and Shreya. ( Along with Sofonisba, Aelfscyne, Sati, ect. xD )

I'm not really sure I chose my own name. I was just called Cahira so now thats what I go by in other planes... 3nodding

i haven't taken my ceramony yet but when i do my name is going to calantha which in gaelic means beautiful blossom

There are many ways that people come up with their magical name. All are valid as long as the name works for the person who bears it.

There are also differences of opinion as to whether a name should be kept secret. In early magical circles it was thought that one did not share their magical name, because knowledge of a thing's true name gave power over it. So the idea was to hide your true name so that a rival sorceror could not gain power over you. That's not really a common belief now. But some people believe that their magical name should be shared only with the Gods and perhaps their coven sibs.

As to how one gets a magical name, there are many ways to go about that too.

In some Traditions, a magical name is given to the person when they are initiated.

Some Traditions send the person on a vision quest to look for a name. This was common in many Native American belief systems.

In my own Trad, a candidate for Initiation must find their magical name prior to being initiated. We suggest meditation, dream work, numerology, other forms of divination, etc as possible ways of finding a name. We also tell them that a magical name should reflect either who you truly are, or the person you would like to become.

My husband took his magical name after holding quite rational conversations with badgers in his dreams for three nights running. My own name came during a meditation when the Goddess appeared to me, laid her hands on my head and said; "You are my Lark, for you shall sing my praises."

Something else to be aware of with magical names.....they may change over time. As we ourselves grow and change spiritually, we may find that our names no longer fit the person we have become. So a person shouldn't be shocked if they find that the name they bore no longer seems to fit them well. The name I bear now is not my first magical name. The old one was outgrown and set aside.
