A few important things happened in that critical moment.

Firstly, the agent lit on fire. He did not seem happy about it, but his stim level wasn't apparently peaked yet, and so he didn't try to roll. He panicked and started sprinting around. Thanks to napalm, other people were soon on fire.

Next, gunfire rang out from above Alyx's feet. The crowd went into an immense panic, and the pair of boots next to Alyx's went limp, and the gentleman posessing them came crashing to the earth, his head pierced by several bullets. Alyx dropped down coughing, her nose bloodied and perhaps broken and her lip split but otherwise fine. She began to crawl for safety.

Third, the police acted, without discrimination between the two types of agents. Wherever safe shots presented themselves, shots started ringing out. More return fire came than was sent out, and from much more automatic firearms. Police cars started moving, and Cado just barely managed to make out Daley being shoved into a car and the car making a sprint for safety. It whirled onto the sidewalk, avoided pedestrians very nearly, and went screeching off into the distance.

Finally, Bush and the other two pulled up. People screamed, crowds were running, and smoke rose in a large, thick pillar from the center. A few agents carrying Uzis were trying to gun down everyone else with a gun, and Bush shook her head as a police car went flying off. "We missed our mark, let's get your team out," Bush suggested, cracking her neck, her voice dropping in tone towards the smooth line it had been at when she first introduced herself.

Shae reloaded as they drove, not speaking.

Cado, from the ground, slung the frag grenade sideways, landing it soundly at the feet of a triad of enemy agents, at which point it did what grenades do best.

This is, of course, releasing shrapnel at high velocities, propelled by an explosion, ripping apart anything fleshy around it.

The three agents took this rather badly, but one took it rather better than expected. He whirled into an explosive roll, landed on his side, rolled towards the crowd and the smoke, and began emptying magazines in Cado's general direction. A bullet slammed through his upper right arm, another through the left forearm. Alyx half yelled in shock and pain as a bullet punched through her right hand, nearly removing a few of her fingers. Her Five-seveN, not damaged but nonetheless apparently disabled, went spinning off at least ten yards. She tried to roll towards it, but the agent was reloading and getting up to advance and aim more carefully.

Uh oh.

((What happened to, y'know, the smoke and them being against the ground?))

((The agent hit the ground and then got up. Another victim of high adrenaline, low stim.))

((Aaaah. So he saw them while he was down there.))

Losing patience, Cado unloaded his Glock 18 at the level of the agent's legs, bracing the gun two-armed against his leg. He was turning his chems up to drown out the pain and increase his precision, but firing from the hip was never a method used for accuracy.

((Exactly.))

The agent yelped, dropped to the ground, but now had something better to steady his Uzi against, as in the ground. He took aim and prepared to unload from maybe fifty yards. The problem was, Cado's magazine was empty, and Alyx's gun was quite distant. For a moment they seemed utterly screwed.

But then repeating rifle fire burst from the ground further away, and the agent's far side shot out broad streams of blood. He slumped and was dead.

The source of the gunfire was a man carrying a G3, one with dark hair and a lot of stubble, and an unpleasant smell about him. He stood for a moment to sprint over to the agents, kicking the Five-seveN to Alyx, then lay down. "Gosh dang, guys, couldn't stay out long enough to let me get a good shower in?" the boatman complained. He didn't sound too upset about it, especially not with the grin he was wearing.

((I should probably go to sleep.

But I doubt I am.))

"Nice of you to join us," Cado said, voice full of gratitude as he reloaded his Glock. "I need better 'nades. Or a rocket launcher or something. Because these things aren't ripping off legs like they're supposed to."

"'Cuz it's agents," the boatman explained cheerfully. "Reinforced bone structure. High, high adrenaline levels. Once you hit full level two, a good RPG frequently won't kill 'em unless it's straight on." His knowledge of this had debatable backstory attached. "Anyhow, looks like that LM agent who was shipping in decided to show up," he said, pointing behind them as Bush's car rolled up. "Let's go, we can chase Daley or we can just make our escape. I say escape," the boatman added, throwing himself in as soon as the door opened and squishing himself up next to Marcus.

Cado got in beside him. "I know they have reinforced bone structure, but if they have... s**t, at least four agents I saw, and at least one had the musculature to not have his leg muscles torn apart by it... They're investing some massive force here."

"Must be full level ones. Moreover, they knew you were coming," the boatman said. He glanced at Alyx, who was cradling her badly damaged right hand, her eyes watering. "Hey, try adrenaline," he recommended. She shook her head; she'd already been using it, apparently, and needed to let it go for a moment to get full effect if she really needed it. Her second, third, and fourth fingers were incapable of movement, as the tendons and muscles had been too badly damaged.

Gabriel holstered his pistol as they drove and pulled his rifle off of his back.
