Yes it's good to know them, but they don't use them as much as you think. I'm learning these things from a native Japanese who lives in Oosaka. She says they don't really use them at all. I think it's only for older stories like The Tale of Genji.

TheFateOfTheUniverse Eccentric Iconoclast Running Start sounds like your version of PSEO; college while still in highschool. Is yours paid for by the state?:O I'm starting fulltime PSEO on the twenty-first! blaugh I'm homeschooled, so I don't have to worry about highschool. Yup. It's state-funded. ^_^ It's also a good thing, since the year after I graduate I'll be in Japan as an exchage student, and I don't think I'll be taking college courses during that time... xD I'm getting my college requirements done for free so that I can throw myself head over tail into linguistics when I get to go to a more well-known college and so that I can get used to a college lifestyle. It's ideal for me...especially since I flunked the math portion of the admissions test so the state won't pay for THAT. Now I don't have to take math classes! They think that my complete inability to do math won't affect any linguistic careers, either.
