I've been studying Chinese at my college for a year now, and I really am looking forward to heading back to class in the fall to keep on learning. I really need to practice outside of class more, so I'm hoping to chat with people in chinese here. My biggest problem is that I've learnt so far by having both the pinyin and the characters available, so I get caught off guard if I see only one or the other sweatdrop

Chinese seems like a very useful language becasue there are a lot of native mandarin speakers, but a lot of people think that it is not worth studying becasue people say that it is so hard and that I might give up on it. I would love to study eventually,

Urgh, yeah the tones are tough. My teacher tells me I'm pretty good at them, but I think it's only because I can imitate how she says a word pretty well. Ask me to read a passage for the first time and get the tones right and I will fumble a bit.

Everyone does, thats not a big deal. They just kinda click eventually. After all, there are only 4. Try cantonese or teochew. gonk

Cantonese isn't that hard. Some people say there are 9 tones, but I think there are only 6.

Thats still more than I want to deal with though. I hate tones. But I will get over them, because I must learn Punjabi! *squee* पंजाबी!!!

Tones are difficult, but no language is too dificult for anyone, they just need to take time and get used to new things and then they can speak with confidence.

I don't have a verbal teacher, though. : It would be easier if I did, but I just have a book and whatever internet source I can find.

You know, I kind of want to learn Wu Chinese- wikipedia [though not always trusted] says it's the second top dialect spoken, but no one ever mentions it... sweatdrop

Its unfortunate, all the other dialects are completely neglected because of the promotion of Mandarin. And Mandarin happens to be the most boring of all of them in my opinion.

I don't know if it's the most boring, but I didn't even know their were really popular dialects outside of Mandarin and Cantonese- until I came here. Grates my buttons...

Until you mentioned Wu, I never heard what any other dialect was and where it came from. I hate the sound of Cantonese, but love Mandarin. I especially love hearing Jackie Chan and Coco Lee singing in Mandarin. 3nodding

I've never heard of Wu Chinese before, that sounds like something interesting to look into. I've really fallen in love with Mandarin though. I've started to hear it in a very lyrical manner, and it's quite beautiful to listen to and speak. That also has helped me with learning the tones.

I don't think I've heard Cantonese spoken- or if I have, I didn't know. I'll have to look it up.

&& I looked quickly on Google, but I still don't know how many tones Wu Chinese has...
