Maya had heard Orika, and grew angry. What had Mai been teaching her daughter? What had Orika been learning on the mainland? What a horrid way to think - the only people Maya had killed were people that threatened to kill her, or that posed a threat to Shimagakure - Shisei may have been a mental threat to Orika, but it was obvious he wasn't a physical threat. Waging war on a country was different than waging war on your own village mate. Maya didn't know how to help Shisei, so she wrapped him up in a fur and, with a great deal of pain in her heart, walked outside and told Baki something she'd never said to him before.
"Stay here, Baki, and watch them. An' Orika ... no one has the right to play God against their own village. Would it be right if I killed Kun'Kumo Kana and his entire clan, just because they believe I am raising Baki so that I can take his eyes? Because they think I'm using my best friend? Would it be right if I killed you and your family, because you annoy me and Mai yelled at me once? Would it be right for me to kill Karite because he wants something he doesn't seem to want to earn? Should I kill the village off, just because I feel like it?" Maya sighed and shook her head. "No, Orika. Ill-behaved shinobi do that. I'm a real shinobi - I may be stupid and I may depend heavily on taijutsu to fight, but I have my honor and my pride. Shisei is no threat until you let him become one. You let him into your head, and now you're upset because he might be better than you in some ways. Everyone is better than you in some way, Orika. And you're better than them in your own way. But no one thinks you're a threat, do they?" Maya took a deep breath, willing herself not to simply get to the point of yelling. She had spoken in a soft, calm, but steady voice. Shaking her head again, Maya hesitated, turned to Baki, and biting her lip, left the grounds to seek clinical care.

((Maya do you mind if I up the dc to 18? It puts it toa 15 roll instead of 12?))
Karite flinched at first when Maya began cutting into his face. He dare not move to make her miss. As she finished the boy pushed his hand to his face to see the mark left. He had seen this mark before in a text book. The tribes far to the east of the wave country used this symbol as a mark of shame for exiles. Why did she use it as friendship? Shaking from his thoughts he sat down getting ready to continue his exercise. Karite rolled over onto his stomach a little pissed off now that Maya had said he wasn't earning the right to be Tategami. What the hell did he have to do to prove to here this is where he belonged? He wasn't strong, wasn't use to working with a partner, and sure as hell wasn't use to being with such people. He was stranded in a totally new environment and he was doing his best to complete her demands and still coop with the change of this place. Putting his hands through the fibers of the fur letting the leather on his gloves feel the warmth of the dead animal. He put his left foot on top of his right angle and breathed deep. "We will see who earns what." Karite spoke softly as he pushed let his body sink slowly watching Maya walk away. Raising up he felt the blood drip from his cheek into the snow.

[[ Sure, if you want to do that. ]]
Baki snorted and walked over to Orika, nudging her gently. He didn't want to stay - but he knew Maya needed him to. He growled softly, licking her face and trying to temper the rage that Maya had waged upon them. Even Karite, who wasn't half bad - Maya had been harsh with them all. Then again, these cubs had harmed another. Not even wild animals did that. Baki wished he could make them understand that. Lions didn't purposely hurt other members of their prides, only outsiders who tried to harm their lifestyle. They ate other animals, true, but these other animals were of different family packs - everyone on this island was one family pack, as much as Baki disliked some of them. He even feared Shinichi and Yuki, Shuga and Dhan. they were all horridly savage beasts. Baki sat next to where Karite was pushing up, and lowered his head to see the mark Maya had given him. It looked familiar to him, one of the many symbols on the tent. Had it been wise? To the Tategami, Baki knew all these symbols meant different things than they might mean somewhere else, and Karite didn't know about those kind of things...he growled softly, encouraging both of them.

Karite just tried to get his anger and frustration out now. He had no need to put up with any of this. If that was case then why was he working so damn hard. He had pushed himself past his limits in everything he had been doing for the longest time. Now this mark engraved in his skin was a further aspect of his build and character to show that he was nothing more then a disgrace to anyone he cared for. A pretender, a liar, a thief, and a failure. Emotional wreckage was always another good one. Trying to shake it from his mind Karite shook his head letting his hair fill out and cover his face. He could see Baki out the corner of his eye. Baki must have believed in him to be so close. Trying to dip again Karite did not make it to far. Something inside he must have been more then bruised. Karite simple felt like his organs had taken a turn for the worse. His entire right side of his body felt like someone had poured liquid magma into his body. Not making a noise the young boy laid on his left side in a ball. This nightmare would have to end soon. He could not manage to much more of it.

Baki growled softly, nuding Karite like he had Orika, and licked the boy's face gently, his rough tongue probably feeling horribly painful on his cut cheek. Baki snapped his jaws in the air and shook himself out. The boy's blood had a much different taste than Maya's - then again, he had grown up using Maya as an overgrown chew toy, so it was only natural, really, that he would be used to it. He nudged the boy again - it wasn't even midmorning and they were already tired. Ok sure they were injured, but even so...

Karite rolled onto his back after the rough saliva from the lion know as Baki entered his system. Brushing out his hair his kunai earring rubbed against his neck. Looking at Baki the boy smiled. He was still wearing the red steel bracelet he had given both him and Maya when they left for war. Maya had given hers back, but she must have forgotten about the one Baki wore. Fighting the pain on the inside of his rib cage. "So Baki, do you think of me as a shame to your clan? I am trying so hard for nothing? Is there something I am missing or is Maya never going to let me be Tategami? I am not strong enough, to emotional, and don't fight well with Kore. Every test she seems to give me I fail miserably. What does she want from me Baki?" Karite did not feel silly talking to Baki. It felt like talking to Orika or Shisei. Talking to the lions was more peaceful and natural then speaking to humans in Karite's mind. He however was not expecting an answer from Baki like Kore.

Baki pricked his ears up, and cocked his head to the side. How to show Karite that Maya wanted him to show who he really was, not what Maya wanted? Maya didn't care what Karite could make himself do, she wanted to know what he offered to the clan. Perhaps...Baki dropped to his stomach and began to crawl around on his belly, looking a LOT like a giant worm or snake. He looked silly, too, doing it! How odd for a lion to rub itself through snow! Even Baki's tail flicked around oddly, and Baki felt a little strange doing it. It didn't suit him at all, and he wanted to get up and stop acting like a snake...but he had to find a way to make Karite understand. Unlike with Maya, he didn't have a connection with the boy.

Karite leaned up and watched the rather large lion make a fool of himself to make the boy understand something. Baki was moving in much the same manner as a snake did. It was quite funny, but the boy interrupted liar from it. Snakes were known as two face creatures and seen to hide something to gain something much like he was doing now, but the true him was not Tategami Material. Right now all the boy really wanted to do was fight and steal. Being with Kore was icing on the cake. Smiling he nodded at Baki. "I get what your saying Baki, but it is not easy for me to show who I really am. I am running from my past. I have never really had a family. I was hoping you and Maya would let me be part of yours." Putting his hand out towards the lion trying to rub his mane, the boy took a leap of faith hoping the pride leader did not find him a threat and sink his teeth into the boys knuckles. While Karite was not scared of Baki, it was still worth while to know that Baki was a full grown jungle cat with the strength and hunger to match,

No, it wouldn't be right. Orika hung her head in shame. She'd been acting like the barbaric shinobi of old that she'd ran away from in the first place. But one glance inside the tent brought her blood to a boil. Why was it so hard to do the right thing? Orika's nerves were on fire, so much that she scooped up a snowball and flung it at the tent, intending to hit the dead boy, but missed and struck the tent flap instead. Shisei's hair ruffled from the wind, but nothing more occurred. Taking in a deep, deep breath and releasing it as slowly as a gentle breeze, Orika leaned back, letting the fire warm her hide while she contemplated how to do push ups with two injured legs. Impossible, she needed to balance her body on her feet to do correct ones. That set aside, all that was left was to think about what Maya had said. Orika never realized how much anger and angst the girl carried with her. It turns out that she wasn't the only emotional one in the village, just that others had better control of their feelings. Her body began to shake and Orika scooted closer to the fire, thinking the shaking was due to the cold. When the first tear fell, Orika quickly glanced away from Karite, who looked lost with that mark on his face, yet so emotionless. She wiped away the drop of weakness and gritted her teeth, which, not surprisingly made more tears leak out. How could she control herself better when such strong emotions ricocheted through her like a dozen high speed shuriken bouncing off the wall of feelings?

Another deep breath, then another. Orika forced herself to calm down, then realized that making a cogent effort wasn't he way to sooth herself. She lay back on the hide and touched the spot where Baki had licked her. At least he believed in her. Orika popped up no sooner than a second after her back touched the mat and smiled at Baki, giving him a thumbs up. She knew Maya wouldn't give her an exercise that was impossible. And she did say to Shisei that they needed to work smart, not hard. So what was a smart way to do this? She couldn't use her legs... but she could use her knees! Orika got into position to do a girl push up, but realized that was too easy for the toned muscles she had. What could she do to make the training challenging enough to give her a good work out? Orika's eyes widened and she slowly slipped her left hand around her back so that she balanced on one hand. Was she strong enough? The girl decided to try it anyway and lowered herself slowly until her chest was a fist's length away from the ground, then back up. She panted from the exertion, but it wasn't impossible and totally doable! "I did one!"" Orika yelled aloud.

Karite understood what Baki was saying. He had be trying to please Maya, but he wasn't being true to himself. Rolling over back onto his stomach Karite looked back into the time he had spent with Maya and know of it was who he was. All of it was what he thought Maya wanted but being himself was all he had ever wanted to be his entire life. Now that he had the chance he was throwing it away. Time to fix that right now.
Pushing the thoughts out of his mind for the time being the young Reaper began to work again. Getting into his smooth Parallel shape He dug into the snow through his fur pelt. Beginning to dip his body he could feel the slight burn from his insides. Whatever Orika had hit she hit good. Not stopping though he pushed himself back up, but he was light headed. He could sense that he was losing more then just blood from his face. his wounded had opened back up. With the bandage still there he would be fine for now, but he would have to bandage it back up after these push-ups or risk bleeding out,.

If killing Shisei was so wrong, why did ever fibre of her body command it? Why did everything sound so good when he was gone? Why, then, did she feel so good punching him and so bad stabbing Karite, whom she cared about? And when Maya scolded her for playing god, she never gave any reasons except that she didn't have the right to kill him. Shisei just deserved to live, nothing more. Maya didn't say anything about how the world would be better, how she'd have less to deal with on her hands, how... What the heck was she thinking? Orika gritted her teeth and lowered herself. 2... 3... 4... Her arms began cramping so she raised herself again and locked her elbow in place. The silence in the grounds was beginning to get on her nerves and she looked at Baki to see what the lion was doing. Nothing important. Orika let go of the breath she had been holding and started talking to break the evil silence, "Baki, do you think Maya will let me do some training with Hamma-san today? I promised him I'd practice everyday and I think I'm finally strong enough to begin. You can accompany us if you want. Ain't nothing wrong with that."

Baki tilted his head and shook out his fur, debating the question. Maya didn't want them training with weapons, and that's what the giant oaf man in the blacksmithing shop made. Weapons. He snorted and shrugged a shoulder, unable to give an answer because he wasn't sure how good of an answer he could give...especially since Maya was the one who was -really- in charge, and not him. Baki yawned and stretched out over the floor, still supervising. He pushed his forlegs and sat, then lay down, then sat, then lay down...his own version of lion-ups.
Encouraging Orika and Karite - +2 Next Roll
Maya entered the grounds with her gaze low, still embarrassed and ashamed at her memory lapse. She usually remembered things in great detail, and yet she had failed to do so at the clinic, where it was most essential. Had Tenko been Kumiko, she wouldn't have even come. In any case, Maya was extremely appreciative that Tenko had taken mercy on Maya's horrid memory and had come to the grounds to help Shisei. Maya was annoyed with Orika and Karite, who seemed to have a god-complex and a brown-nosing attitude respectively. Maya knew Karite wasn't the type of brat that did all the things he had been doing, so why was he pretending to be? It pissed her off, and it made her doubt her decision to adopt him. But she had already marked the boy, in a sense, as her own...so she would just have to drill him and train him even harder.

Tenko arrived at the grounds in a sweat from the long run. With all the sprinting she'd been doing lately, the nurse seriously thought about getting into better shape, but remembered why she was out of shape in the first place; Work always got in the way and who wanted to run around in the frosty winter? She followed Maya into the largest tent and gasped when she saw Shisei, knocked out, and barely breathing. Tenko got down on her knees and checked the boy's pulse, her brow knitting when she could barely hear what should have been a strong beat. She laid Shisei out into a comfortable position and pressed on his chest with quick thrusts, groaning when the boy's breath only slowed further until she didn't know whether he was breathing or not. Tenko bent and blew a breath of air into Shisei's mouth, the bitter taste of his lips stuck on hers. She repeated the thrusts, then did more mouth to mouth until lo and behold, the boy finally got to breathing. Tenko carefully slipped off Shisei's shirt and started tending to the huge bruise on his chest with special ointments. He should be waking up anytime soon...
Orika pouted when she saw Baki didn't have the answer and went back to something she was certain she could do. 5...6... It wasn't until this push up that things got hard. Orika took in a slow, deep breath and allowed herself to fall to the fur mat with a sigh. She had to keep up her training with Hammah no matter what. But she couldn't slip past Maya without the element of surprise and the girl had heard them talking before. Gah, she was so stupid! Why couldn't she keep her darn mouth shut? Orika traced an infinity circle in the snow and gritted her teeth, angry for taking a break. She got back into position and did two quick push ups. 7... 8! By this time, her arms were starting to feel like strips of bologna so the girl got up, sat back, and caught her ragged breath in time to see Maya come back to the grounds, followed by a haggard Tenko. Orika turned away, refusing to meet Maya's eyes until she found her answer to how she'll convince the girl to let her train. But for now, she probably should finish these push ups. If only she had the strength of a bull instead of a 13 year old girl!

Orika looked over at Karite struggling to finish his Maya-style push ups. He sure was having a lot harder time than she was. Sick of working so hard herself, Orika decided to relax for a moment and direct her strength towards helping him. After all, the faster they got done, the more there would be to do. She wasn't one of those lazy kids in grammar school that took forever going to the bathroom in order to avoid not coming back to class. "Just a few more, Karite!" Orika yelled, ending with a cough. For the weather, she was rather lightly dressed. Her mother used to make her put on at least 4 layers when it got this cold and today she was only wearing two. Orika looked with sad eyes at the rice farms, wondering how her mother would feel once she found out the foul game they had played. So many people were relying on her to become a powerful shinobi so she couldn't mess up again. That might even include not killing Shisei. Maybe. Orika shifted in her place, flicked a few snowflakes off her trousers, anything to occupy her mind during the uncomfortable silence. Maya probably wasn't in the mood to talk to them until they finished their push ups and Karite was too busy thinking about being a Tategami and doing tough push ups to make conversation with. There was Baki, but he proved to not know much about what she wanted to know. Orika sighed and got into push up position, realizing there wasn't much else to do.
