Exxos They are still coming out of a long period of self-imposed isolation and they do not have a complete infrastructure. I think the reasoning behind it is to bring in foreign funds to help build access up while keeping a kind of bottleneck on outside influence. I mean, if you had to pay $250 per day just to be there, you would definitely have to be someone completely serious about wanting to be there, not just some oblivious goit milling about. MelodyUnchained But one of a country's biggest sources of income can be tourism. By making it impossible for the "average traveler" to afford their fees, they are essentially saying that they don't want their other business. Wouldn't it make more sense to impose a smaller fee per day and charge in slightly higher increments for other necessities of travel rather than in one lump sum per day which will deter someone. If costs are wrapped into other fees, people are less likely to notice and agree to pay. I guess what I'm getting at is there is a better way to make that $250/day then demanding it up front in a more "tourist friendly" way You're both right. Part of it is definitely about keeping a bottleneck on outside influences. Keep in mind that Bhutan has never been colonized. Also, it only got television in 1999. So the government is incredibly sensitive on protecting its unique traditional culture, and I think rightly so. Plus, the tourist fee does actually cover a guide and driver, both of which are necessary to go anywhere. It does really suck though that the non-rich can't come and visit. I have no idea yet how difficult it will be for my or my (future) kids to come and visit their dad's family. Oh well.

Well, in that regard, by the time you have kids and they are old enough to travel there (think about a baby on a trip that long, yeah, they'll probably be closer to 10 years old to stay sane on that trip), they might have had enough integration into the rest of the world that you'll get some sort of family visitation visa type thing that will be like $100 for the first person, $50 for each additional, and just cover getting you to and from family.

Sammirah humble_gypsy_traveller I just want to say that I love all the people in this guild! If any of us lose touch...I just hope for the best for everyone and that their future is a fruitful one! I wish we could all get together someday irl and enjoy each other's company in one place...even just for a few days. Me too! You're not going anywhere, are you? Heh...no, I'm not going anywhere...I was just having a reflective and somber moment. Also just wanted to say that I love everyone here. 4laugh heart

Or maybe they will start making concessions for blood family

gaia_nitemareleft Gosh, I have such a massive headache right now and it's fully self afflicted. stressed My workplace had a christmast party yesterday. We went to eat in a fancy restaurant and then we went to see a stand up show. It was fun but since I rarely drink anything alcoholic, it doesn't take much to make my head ache. xp So have you guys got all the presents already? I decided not to buy a lot of presents this year and make the few I get more personal and useful. gaia_angelright

So is your mothers puppy short haired or are the clothes just for decoration? xp I've collected little things for my mother's gift bag (tea, hand made sopa etc.) and to my fiances sister we decided to order her a magazine for a year. I get the same magazine and she's always borrowing them so we decided to order it for her. xd gaia_angelright

Now I can't shake a mental image of a little snauzer in a pink fluffy tutu. xd This caroling is getting ridiculous. I got all 19 but I can't find the santa in the map. I've been looking after him since yesterday. stressed edit: Finally found him! Yay, got my first item. sweatdrop Oh and morikoarina, I posted a cake in your contests. smile gaia_angelright
