Sammirah Exxos Sammirah (It's not easy or affordable to hop back and forth between the two countries). $1500 to $3000 USD and anywhere from 25 to 32 hours in flight just to get from the Dhaka, Bangladesh (this was what kept coming up, does Paro not have an airport anymore?) to Vancouver apparently. *cringe* I don't know where in Canada you're heading beyond that, but anything more than a single stop and 8 hours in the air is enough to make me shudder. Yup, Vancouver/Victoria. No, Paro still has the airport. I'm flying through Bangkok though, not Dhaka. But yeah, it's about two and a half days travelling. And not cheap. Plus, if I want to return to Bhutan as a normal person (now that my work contract is up) I would more than likely have to pay the daily $250 tourist fee. There's a $250 tourist fee? Per Day?!? eek

I just want to say that I love all the people in this guild! If any of us lose touch...I just hope for the best for everyone and that their future is a fruitful one!
I wish we could all get together someday irl and enjoy each other's company in one place...even just for a few days.

I think the reasoning behind it is to bring in foreign funds to help build access up while keeping a kind of bottleneck on outside influence. I mean, if you had to pay $250 per day just to be there, you would definitely have to be someone completely serious about wanting to be there, not just some oblivious goit milling about.

I mean, if you had to pay $250 per day just to be there, you would definitely have to be someone completely serious about wanting to be there, not just some oblivious goit milling about. But one of a country's biggest sources of income can be tourism. By making it impossible for the "average traveler" to afford their fees, they are essentially saying that they don't want their other business. Wouldn't it make more sense to impose a smaller fee per day and charge in slightly higher increments for other necessities of travel rather than in one lump sum per day which will deter someone. If costs are wrapped into other fees, people are less likely to notice and agree to pay. I guess what I'm getting at is there is a better way to make that $250/day then demanding it up front in a more "tourist friendly" way

Per Day?!? eek Yup. It's to control tourism and protect the environment, culture, etc. They don't want thousands of people just traipsing through leaving garbage and venereal diseases. So it's pretty much just rich old people who can afford to come, most of who are completely insufferable, by the way.
