Jasmine
"Understood sir," she said without hesitation, getting into the Explorer with a nod of recognition for his deed.

The convoy had barely gotten underway when Yaits leaned back, yawning slightly. He opened a small fridge and pulled out a small orange juice.

"I don't drink anything fermented, alcohal numbs the senses and dulls the mind," he explained, "Call me a health nut if you must. However, if you must, there is some smirnoff in the back trunk. I won't drink it though."

..............

"I found it quite interesting that you were so resistant to the preacher's message," Yaits said, sipping his juice, "Quite an admirable show of the will to power. I'm quite fond of the preacher though, did you find something wrong with what the preacher said?"

"Nothing at all," she said, her expression turning to stone at the memory of how her common sense was almost completely stripped away. She had no idea how it had happened... but whatever it was, she did not want to do it again.

"I simply do not enjoy having my integrity compromised. The only right choice... is the one that I am free to make with my own mind. That may sound a bit selfish, but consider this- if someone were to tell you something that sounded good.. so good that there did not seem to be any flaws or compromises, yet did not fall in line with what you believed deep within you...

Would you listen? Would you want to know? Or would you fight in order to keep to all that you've stood for?"

She didn't mention that it was the exact thing that had almost happened to her when the preacher's words reached her...

"I'm drowning in quaint ideals and deep beliefs, I have stockpiles, warehouses full of them, sold by the ton for a nickel." Yaits said, who was quite relaxed. "Know this, the preacher's truth is no better or worse than your truth, my truth, or any truth. Why, because there is no truth, no absolutes, no boundaries, and no objective standards. Everything in the universe is subjective, my dear, everything. Beliefs are defined on the perspective of the conciousness that holds them, nothing more. But the preacher, his words offer something beyond value, inner peace and contentment. So, tell me this, what petty tripe could define your belief system so that you hold it to be more valuable even than the peace of your very soul? What exactly do you believe in?"

"That may be so... but inner peace cannot be obtained when it is already there, and there are many ways in which it can be obtained. As for what I believe... I believe in my own power to make a change, and not that of any god, be it Ymir or otherwise. It's too unreliable for me.

I joined up not because of a god or some religion. I joined up to make a difference with my own two hands."

Besides... there were some flaws in this so-called miracle that I could not help but miss.

She stopped there, her reasoning complete. It might not have been good enough, but it was her reasoning.

Suddenly, he received a mental link from the eye slug. Interesting, Yaits thought, why was that man asking about the disappeance? No, that wasn't normal, people don't just casually waltz into one of his offices, ask about an event that's old news, and just leave cassually without requesting any company services. It was quite odd, considering Hugin & Munin weren't called the eyes-of-Odin for nothing, this conformed the suspicion that he was being investigated. It was just a hunch, who else would want to find things, to dig up the dirt. And now this woman who had thrown aside the preacher's words as if he were just another prattling drunk. Who was far too well trained to be a volunteer, who had all the right military credentials at the right times, and knew exactly the right thing to say at the right time. She was at least as suspicious as the fool who had barged into the office to be caught by the eye slug.

"That's not good enough," Yaits said, his smile twisting slightly as he tapped his fingers against the handle of the door with an even series of tap-tap-taps, "You told me your inner peace comes from your your belief in your ability to change things with your own two hands. But how would you seek to change things? That would explain the true nature of your beliefs. What would you like to see acheived? Universal justice, world peace, or something less noble, maybe an improvement your own personal situation, or maybe you live for another individual? You could even have a vendetta to fufill. What drives you, Jasmine?"

Mistake.

"I told you nothing about where my inner peace comes from. What I did tell you is what I believed in."

She looked at him with a quirked eyebrow. Something had happened in order to have him ask the question, and she didn't like it. She didn't like that smile he had either. But she held her composure and continued.

"As for what drives me, I seek the good of all men, without any other motive. I don't do this for my own self, nor for my own personal vendetta. I have no personal agenda that I can't take care of myself, and I plan to do everything within my abilities in order to see that people are free, safe, and at peace. And anyone else? I don't have the time for it, sir. I assure you, my intentions are good... so why the sudden suspicion?

In any case, my abilities are at your disposal, whether to heal... or other things. It's best to use them, even if they're meant to destroy, to preserve mankind instead of set them to ruin, as far as I'm concerned."

Jasmine
"I told you nothing about where my inner peace comes from. What I did tell you is what I believed in."

"My apologies, but I worked under the assumption that your inner peace comes from your beliefs. And you did say you believe in your own power to make a change."

Jasmine

Yaits stopped talking, became quite serious, and continued tapping his fingers in a monotonous three tap pattern until they reached the next final destination for the busy day. The ruins of Yaits Corp Headquaters. Yaits bowed at the open crater and payed his respects. One-hundred and thirty-two pink and blue daffodils were left in the crater to represent the number of employees the company had lost. The grieving Yaits televised live for the world to see. Jasmine would be expected to wait with the convoy, and hold the door open for her new boss.

Once back in the SUV, they would head back to the hotel for the night. But Yait's wasn't surre wether he wished to make one last stop before they returned.

"You love your meaningless platitudes, don't you," he said, "Have you other stopped to think that some have differing veiws as to what is good for all men. Free, safe, and at peace you say. There are some who seek the irreversable destruction of mankind, and beleive that will serve the objectives you mentioned. When you are dead, you are free of the world's constraints, safe from any further harm, and in a state of eternal peace. Now surely that isn't what you wish for. You need to be more specific if you want to be clearly understood. Consider it a job requirement.

She held the door open, waited with the convoy, and scoffed as he knelt to grieve... for the very hell which he himself had unleashed.

You're nowhere near as sincere as you claim to be.

As the convoy drove on and he asked the next question, she grew tired of playing this word game. But her face remained unmarked by her irritation as she simply awnsered the question.

"There you have it... these same individuals you speak of are the ones that must be dealt with. That kind of thinking, in case you haven't noticed, is called terrorism. I'm a liscensed and registered nurse, Mr. Yaits- I heal people instead of kill them. Do you really believe that all I want to do is simply destroy people in order to give them peace and freedom? If so, you insult me- it's against my nature.

However, I was that same medic of a counter-terrorism unit, and I knew how to defend myself properly against those with the exact same thinking you have just described. Consider if you will... if I killed my fellow man when they had done nothing to deserve such things, just for the pretense of "setting their souls free", would I not be the same monster I was fighting?"

Yaits laughed slightly, as if he was explaining something to a child. "I have no doubt that you are quite the humanist, and I am certain you don't seek the destruction. I was only saying that many people have differing veiws of what peace, freedom, and safety even consist of, much more so how they can be best acheived. Morals are defined by the time, girl, pick anything that you consider to be against your principles, atrocious perhaps, and I can assure you that at one time humanity justified or even embraced those things. Any sin can be justified if it is sold convincingly enough, or supported by a substantial majority. I might even know of a powerful force who believes that extinction would fufill humanity's needs, posibly other needs far more signifigant than anything humanity has ever considered. While I might be inclined to agree, I personally admire humanity's persistance against all odds, and the destruction of our race would grieve me most signifigantly. That's why I support the Charitable Order."

With that the convoy stopped at the hotel. They made it to the door, but he stopped her before they entered.

"It's been quite entertaining, Jasmine" Yaits said, "But I'm afraid this is where we part ways. It's been a pleasure, but you simply don't meet the exceedingly high hiring standards in my humble opinion. Though I was glad we could have this talk."

He extended his hand, smiling pleasantly. He decided to go with the gut feeling he had. What he said would have no affect if she were not a spy anyhow, and if she was, what he said would be most useful. In otherwords, he couldn't lose, "Please tell your boss there is nothing, I grow weary of his needless snooping. And have him contact me tonight, we need to talk."

With that he would disappear into the hotel, leaving Jasmine to her own devices, and quite unharmed.

She shook hands and exited the car as well, sighing to herself. Then, as the convoy left, his words hit her.

Damn... we've been found out? But... how? It wasn't that obvious, was it? We were careful...

But then, something else occured to her.

Quote:

It struck a chord.

The only way to sway that many people would be through exactly what he's doing now. And if that's the case, then he's going for something bigger... Maybe even...

Her eyes narrowed as she looked up at the hotel.

...Politics.

She had to inform her employer anyways, and her mission was a failure. At least she would have the motives of the Charitable Order of Monks all in one package. As for the rest of the wording, he would be able to figure that out on his own.

"Taxi!"

FLASH BACK TIME...TIME...TIME...TIME...TIME...TIME...

"Dashboard..."

Silver and Dash stood facing one another in the hallway of the medical ward. They haven't actually seen each other since their encounter several days ago on the airship.

"There you are, noobmeister! Congrats on your victory!" Dash greeted with a bright smile on his face. He approached his bud and gave him a firm pat on the back.

"Thanks, I- Wait a second, what did you just call me?" Silver asked as he stopped himself from stumbling forward. Dash ignored the question and continued on.

"It was pretty boring, though. I at least hoped someone from that scrub team would win a round."

"Hey, they beat you guys! Which reminds me, why did you lose you jerk! We were supposed to meet in the finals!"

"Yeah, but I've changed my mind."

"Changed your mind? You can't do that!"

"Sure I can."

"But... but... what about our fight!?"

"Oh, it's going to happen. I decided that I would save you the humiliation of being beaten before a crowd of millions."

"How thoughtful..." Silver sighed with obvious sarcasm.

"That, and that stupid tournament wouldn't do our fight justice. The ring is too small, there are spectators to get in the way, and the rules are way too restrictive."

"It still would have been awesome!"

"I guess... Like I said, we'll still have our battle." Dash reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded slip of paper and handed it to Silver. "Here is where we will throw down." Silver unfolded and examined it.

"Uhh, I'm not sure what this is supposed to be, exactly." Silver said with a puzzled expression. "That guy looks kinda familiar... Is that supposed to be me? Why's my hair on fire!? Wait, are those... lightning bolts!?" Silver seemed very confused.

"What? Let me see that!" Dash quickly snatched the paper and looked it over. The paper had a crudely drawn picture of a space ship shooting laser beams at something that sort of looked like Silver. Except the figure appeared to have on a pair of dark shades and a couple lightening bolts firing out of its nose. "Whoops, this is just some random doodles I drew during the finals. I did say it was boring." Dash quickly crumbled up the paper and tossed it before reaching into his other pocket. "Okay, HERE is where we will have our epic battle."

Silver examined the paper's contents with a slow nod and then looked to Dash. "Why here?"

"Plenty of room and no one to get in the way."

"When do you want to do this?"

"In two weeks..."

"Sounds good."

"When the time comes, you'd better bring everything you've got!" Dash said with a smirk.

"Of course, and I expect nothing less of you!" Silver said with a grin. The two then touched fists, sealing the deal.

Two weeks... the countdown began.

The flashback continues!

"Oh and one more thing..." Silver began just as Dash was turning to leave.

"What's that?"

"I've got some bad news." Silver lowered his head some, almost as if saddened by something.

"Which is?"

"I... I think I'm dying."

"What!? You have to have more confidence than that! Our fight isn't for two weeks!"

"No no, not from that, I... have cancer!"

"When did this happen?" Dash was baffled. He couldn't believe what he was hearing!

"I just found out."

"So that's why you have that hat on? The treatment caused you to lose your hair?"

"That's the thing..." Silver started, grabbing a firm hold of the hat that he was appearantly wearing throughout the entire scene, yet there was never any reference to. "The cancer is... my hair!" He tossed his hat aside, which hit the ground with a dramatic slow motion effect.

"WHAT THE HELL!?" Dash exclaimed, taking a step back. Turns out his friend hadn't lost his hair. It was pretty much the opposite. Silver now stood before him, an enormouse afro sitting atop his head! "What kinda cancer causes you to grow an afro!?"

"Why don't you ask the ones who gave it to me?" Silver said with a sinister grin.

"Huh? Who?" Dash asked, scratching his head. Now it was his turn to be confused.

"Them!" Silver pointed at something behind Dash. Dash immediately spun around to see... An empty hallway!

"Uhh..? I don't see anyone." His glance returned to Silver. "What have you been smoking, man?"

"Fool, look again!"

Dash turned back around, expecting to see the still empty hallway. He was in for quite a surprise when instead, he saw an army of fifty ninjas
all standing behind him. Each one had their arms folded, and they all wore the typical black ninja garments. They were in tight formation and looked very dangerous.

"What the ********!? Ninjas don't give people Afro-cancer!"

"That's what you think! GET HIM!" And with that, they attacked!

End flashback.*

Wearing comfortable pajamas, Yaits sipped red grape juice from a champagne glass as he surveyed Latent from his hotel room. It was late, the sun had already set and the stars graced the sky. On the table was a small communications device, a black cell phone/ computer with a secure line. He expected an important call, but it was getting late.

"I suppose not," he said, "Honestly."

With that he went to bed, he had a big speech to give tommorrow, regardless of what happened. But he left the phone on, if the call came through he would take it.
