"I don't know yet. We'll see what they have," Toby said, following Maia out so they could leave quickly.
"I love you too, Maia," Dari answered easily, returning the hug. There were all kinds of love, and they shared friend-love.

Toby was certainly eager to go, maybe he was hungry. Maia smiled at him and waited for him to unlock the car. "Lets be fast," she said. She still didn't like leaving Dari alone.
"What bakery are we going to? The one in the store?"

"Yeah," Toby agreed, brow furrowing as he nodded. He knew how to read Dari. They'd be fast.
"Mm, no. Flander's. It's just a bakery. They're only open from five am to eleven or something like that. They're amazing."

Anything Toby considered amazing was a must-try. He was an expert chef, in Maia's eyes. "They must be good," she smiled. "As good as your stuff?" She doubted it. The cupcakes they'd made had been one of the best things the selkie had ever tasted.

"It's not always about better or worse," Toby said as they started away. "Everyone makes things differently. Like you'll have a favorite, but that doesn't mean there aren't other amazing ones you love. You know?" He had no idea if his muffins were 'better' in any way.
The bakery wasn't far away. There was nobody else in the little parking lot and they were able to go right in and view the doughnuts and muffins and bagels available, baked fresh daily. A little sign on the door said 'cash only'.

Coming from a man who was so competitive, Maia thought that was a bit strange. She nodded in understanding though, and when they arrived and got out of the car, she was happy to wander into the bakery. It was like the candy shop in Oregon, she decided. Something wonderful packed into a small shop.
She looked around for muffins.

Toby pointed out the muffins without a word, and then caught the gaze of the young woman behind the counter. They shared a grin.
"Good morning!" The woman chirped. "If you need help with anything, just let me know!"
"Good morning!" Toby replied, "We're just looking around for the moment, thank you." Ah, but he noticed she was giving him the eyes. Oh, sweetheart, of only she knew!

Maia noticed the woman behind the counter. She wasn't sure what to make of that, but she didn't like the way she was looking at Toby. Hm. Best to distract him, then. Get him home as soon as possible, and then they could do something fun with Dari.
She took hold of Toby's arm and pointed towards the muffins behind the glass. "Those look good," she said. "Why don't we get a few and head home?"

Toby's attention returned to Maia as it would have naturally without her efforts. Women made eyes sometimes. It didn't mean anything at all.
"Sure, what kind do you want to try?" Toby asked, and the added: "We could eat them out there." He pointed to the little cafe tables at the street. It really was nice weather. Oh, wait, no, Dari wanted them back. "No, you're right, we'd better bring them home."

"Chocolate chip looks good. And poppy seed too..." She considered and smiled at him. "Both?" she suggested. Maia would have taken Toby up on the offer, had Dari not requested them to come home. He wanted company, and maybe they'd be able to something fun.
"It's nice out, we could try convincing him to go somewhere with us. Maybe a picnic?"

"Sure," Toby said with a nod of agreement. He turned back to the cashier. "Could I get one poppy seed, one chocolate chip, a cranberry-orange and a lemon? To go, please."
"Sure! Of course!" The young woman went cheerily about collecting the ordered muffins with tongs and little squares of wax paper and then handed the bag to Toby, quoted him a price, and wished the pair of them a "good day" after they had paid and gone.

Maia was pleased by Toby's response. A picnic was always good, and to share It with Dari made It even better! She followed Toby out the door, smiling at him. "They all looked so good I had trouble deciding," she confided. "I'll try something different next time we come."
"We could go to the park," she suggested, on the way to the car.

Toby pulled a bit of a face. "I'm not sure he'll want to go out today. It's a lot of work to paint up. I guess if we started home before dusk, though..." The projector was handy. It had taken a long time to come about, though, for it to diffuse properly through the unearthly liquid that was his best friend.
"Why don't you call him and find out?"

Maia hadn't thought about that. Some days, Dari really didn't want to go out. It took a lot of work and probably wasn't the most comfortable thing ever. She pulled out her phone and quickly dialed Dari's number. She waited for him to pick up.
"Do you want to go to the park today?" she asked. "We could have a picnic."

Dari plucked his ringing phone from the side table and grinned. Maia's communication skills could maybe use a little work, but she'd learn just like he had.
"Well, hello. We could go to the park today, if you'd like." As long as he had company, he would be fine. He didn't fit in with the rest of humanity and he didn't eat, but he was used to following along behind his more humanoid friends and enjoying the time spent with them rather than the same activities.
