Why did Lin have a feeling she just said the wrong thing? Going back to filling the cracks, but she admitted if confronted she wouldn't know right? Unless he was just saying that so she wouldn't know, he loved her.
Which really didn't make any sense.
It wasn't like she was asking for a confession, she was simply asking for a normal courtship, which was probably a bit mean since she didn't know.
And she had to know because this was going to bug her.
Why couldn't he be direct like Gaian boys? Actually she would probably be forced to kick his a** if he was. Damn, maybe she should have just asked how did he know he was in love.
That would have been more helpful. She pounded the snow into the cracks.

And so for a while, they built a castle around Miyuki, both of them silent and contemplating their misunderstood conversation. Earendil, for his part, was devastated. That she would so openly declare that she had no interest in him ... well, it hurt him, even though he had expected it.
Still.
And now how could he say something after a remark like that? And what could he say now, on any subject? Anything would seem like a simple filler, weak and out of place, compared to what he wished he could say. But as time went on and their snow castle grew bigger, he only grew more frustrated with himself. He was a failure. He didn't deserve to say anything to Lin. He was a coward. She deserved so much better. Why was he fooling himself? He didn't have a chance. Just because she had no problem with interracial marriages didn't mean she would marry him.
He hated feeling like this. In all their years together, it was the first time that he felt awkward with her. He hated it. He wanted to be comfortable with her, the way things had always been.

In all this, there had to be a voice of reason. Unfortunately there was no voice of reason when two adults who completely misunderstood each other were involved. Of course to be fair, one had self esteem issues and the other was emotionally defective at times.
Fortunately, they had Miyuki, who didn't like the sudden change in the atmosphere. She had stopped playing with the snow a while ago to note that her Mommy and her Earendil were not talking or even seemly happy. They always talked to each other that was just the way things were.
"Dil!" she shouted out, "Mummi! Dil! Mummi!"

Earendil was startled by Miyuki's voice, and he hurried over to her side and held his hand out to her.
"Are you all right?" he asked her worriedly. "Is something wrong, Miyuki?"
He had never heard her sound so insistent before ... though he had to admit he was impressed with how well she could get her point across the very day she learned new words.

She grabbed his hand but looked up at her mother with a pout and out reached free hand.
"Mummi!" she a very insistent voice that left no room for argument had she had a larger vocabulary.
Lin frowned realizing that Miyuki was, upset, even though she didn't know why. She hurried over and took Miyuki's other hand.
"Are you cold?"
She had been sitting in that snow for long while now.
"Mummi! Dil!"
Unfortunately Miyuki's vocabulary was very, very limited.

Earendil's brow furrowed with worry. Something was very wrong ... and he couldn't help but wonder if perhaps he knew what it was. Problem was, how do you go about making up with someone when you hadn't even had an argument?
"Maybe she wants to go back inside?" he suggested, looking at Lin, even though he knew almost certainly that wasn't the case.

Lin wasn't so sure, it didn't seem like that was what was bothering Miyuki, but at this point she was at a loss at what it was.
"I can't think of what else it could be," Lin replied helplessly as she reached over to pick Miyuki up.
"Dil!"

"Uhh ..."
Earendil blushed. Did Miyuki want him to pick her up? He ran his fingers through his hair. "Um ... should ... should I take her, maybe?" he asked, also at a loss.

Lin lightly chewed the inside of her cheek, she really didn't know what to make of this, even though it shouldn't surprise her that her daughter was very fond of Earendil.
"That might be better, I don't know what's setting her off this time."

Earendil nodded and took Miyuki from Lin and bounced her lightly in his arms before he headed towards the door.
"You know," he told Miyuki seriously, "you're going to have to start talking soon so that you can tell us what's bothering you. Leaving us to guess isn't very nice."
He smiled fondly at her, though he was inwardly troubled. If Lin had no special regard for him, then this kind of affection that Miyuki had towards him was not a good thing. They would have to be separated someday ...

"Mummi!"
Miyuki didn't see the problem, besides the fact no one could understand her at the moment, but she would find a way. She reached out for her mother. They would be all together and they would be happy because that was just the way things were.
Lin blinked at the sudden change, wasn't she just calling for Earendil a moment ago?

Now Earendil really was confused. He had called for both of them, then when Lin had picked her up she had called for Earendil, and now that Earendil had her, she wanted Lin again?
"And people say I can't make up my mind," he said as he passed Miyuki back over to Lin.

Lin couldn't help but chuckle at his bewilderment, he looked honestly adorable while he was confused like that. A thought she really shouldn't be having about her best friend.
She wrapped her hands around Miyuki's waist and took Miyuki back.
As Lin was doing so Miyuki reached back and tried to keep a hold of Earendil. It was as if she was tugging Earendil along.

Earendil blinked, perplexed when Miyuki wouldn't let him go. "What does she want, a group hug?" he asked, not really believing it. Yet that seemed to be the case ...
Well, now what?

Lin blinked at him, also at a lose of what Miyuki wanted.
"Maybe?" she offered.
"Mummi! Dil! Mummi! Dil!" Miyuki repeated looking back and forth as if, if she did it enough they would eventually understand what she wanted from the two of them.
She couldn't help but blush a bit at the idea, "It's worth a try?"
