Earendil smiled faintly as he continued to roll more snowballs.
"We used to, quite often," he replied softly. "About ... many things. About the dwarfs, about the other elves, about ... well, races in general and then about interracial marriages."
He shrugged one shoulder. "We still don't see eye-to-eye, but he does accept now that I'm ... well, open-minded I guess. He doesn't pressure me to be like him anymore. I suppose he's realized that all the arguing in the world can't change things."

He actually had an argument with his father about interracial marriages? She wondered if it involved her in any shape or form, it was a morbid feeling when one wanted to be the fly on the wall for that conversation.
"The last one had to be interesting," Lin murmured.
Dwarves were one thing, it was understandable there was still a lot of bad blood between races. Especially between humans and dwarves, not that she condoned it, but it was still understandable. Elves.. well all elves were elves, they were created at the same time to be one race and circumstances just made them all different (a completely fascinating idea but a different topic all together). Interracial marriages though, was completely different.

Earendil paused for a moment as he thought about it, and he turned slightly away from Lin, focusing on his snowball as his face turned a bright shade of red.
"Well ... yes," he said softly. "It was ... animated."
As well she could imagine.

Animated could mean so many things she thought. It could mean a lot of hand waving and yelling, it could mean a lot of pacing and shouting, or it could be punches being thrown.
Or that was the really violent side of her talking.
Placing another snowball she paused a moment to watch Miyuki make her snow tower. There wasn't a point to ask what would have Ruel thought of adopting from a different race, marrying one would give him a stroke already if elves could have strokes.
She chuckled, "You're quite polite about it. I'm glad back home no one batters an eyelash, Dad would have gotten violent about it."
No one cared that her father had married an angel, in fact he had been threaten to almost by her grandmother, which cracked her up inside.
"Of course, Grandmother just wanted a wedding, and grandbabies I'm sure. Actually I think she just wanted grandbabies."

Earendil smiled faintly. "Well ... I think Ada would have argued a bit more if he thought that it was a possibility, but ... as things stand ... he feels safe enough that it won't happen. Not here, not with ..."
He broke off suddenly and shook his head. "He just feels he doesn't have to worry about it," he repeated, setting his snowball next to the first one he had made.

This told Lin probably two things. One, Ruel would freak out if hypothetically she got married to Earendil, and two, Earendil probably never ever intended to tell her.
Ever.
While she knew Ruel disagreed with his sons and daughter on a regular basis, he had to know them enough to know a sure thing.
Despite the fact that she really had no damn clue what she was feeling, she knew she was at least feeling a bit peeved. It was quite tempting to turn around and chuck snow at Earendil for that slight.
"And to think I keep telling people your father isn't that bad..."
For some reason Lin couldn't help but feel defensive about Ruel, he was a good guy for the most part, but for some reason she couldn't help but think he was an a**. Which to her didn't make much sense, it wasn't like she actually liked Earendil in that way.
Well okay, actually she didn't know if she didn't even feel for him in that way.

Earendil half-smiled. "Well ... he really isn't, not if he's handled right. I just ... really have no idea what he's going to do when -- if the time comes."
After all, he couldn't just announce that he was hoping to marry someone of a different race, that would be as good as telling her he loved her, something he wasn't quite ready to do yet. He had no idea how she would react, and to be honest, he was being a coward.

She really had to stop beating around the bush about this, because if she didn't she would drive herself nuts. Fortunately though she did know a think or two about interrogating and taking opportunities. She really really hoped that Earendil would forgive her for manipulating the situation.
"So... out of curiosity," Lin spoke as she picked up a snowball and set it down finishing the wall, "Would you, if you happened to fall in love with a human, marry her? In the face of your father having a major freak out, and politics."
After all she had been human once.

"Human?" Earendil repeated, startled. "I wouldn't-"
He broke off, staring at Lin, and then he laughed, though his face turned even redder than it already was. "Aha. I get it. Theoreticals."
He chuckled. "If it were to happen, then yes, I would. Life is filled with many things, many events that we can say are good or bad. But without love, there is no point to any of it. What is the use in living if you deny yourself the one thing that you desperately desire more than anything else in the world?"
He had to wonder, though. From her questions ...
"On the other hand," he added, "there are other things to consider. It wouldn't be just about me. There would be her feelings to consider. If she even felt the same way, which may be doubtful, then would she be willing to make the match, knowing what it would mean to everyone around her? Would she be willing to make the same sacrifices, to leave the world that she knows, the people she knows, simply for the sake of that one person? Should she even have to?"

Touche... Lin began filling in the cracks of the snowballs. She had to think about that one, there was of course family to think about. She did love her family after all (even if her grandmother drove her nuts).
And her family was prepared to one day have a child leave them, after all look at Celebor, or Serenity, or Ithirel, did they not live far away from home? It didn't make their love for family any less, it was simply their life. Of course there were her friends....
But there was one little thing, she had always wanted to be here, she had long ago decided this was where she belonged, and resigned herself to the fact she would be here alone. Which made her wonder why she wasn't doing a little jig in her head knowing she didn't have to be alone.
Her brain paused for a moment.
She didn't have to be alone.
Lin forced her mind back to the question at hand, "People move away eventually, especially when they're starting a family. Look at Awren, or Lothirel, or even Elrohir and Haradhel. They only keep in contact with letters alone and haven't seen each other in years... decades even. Besides another type of life might not be as foreign as you think. As for her own friends and family if they care they'll understand."
Besides if she had to she would shove as many letters as she liked through the closest portal. So what if she didn't get as many letters back it wasn't like a lot was going to likely happen for years. And why in the hell was she even thinking that way yet.

"It's not the same," Earendil protested. "Even if they're in different areas of the continent, or different continents altogether, like Rhea is, at least they're in the same --"
He cut himself off yet again and ground his teeth together. He had about to say the same world, but how much more of a giveaway could he give her? There was simply no way to respond to her without outright telling her. Which meant there was no way for him to win this debate.
When had it become a debate anyways?
He looked over at her. "Are you driving at something specific?"

Yup Haldia was right, damn Haldia was right.... A very small part of Lin was actually glad it wasn't Haldia and at this point she didn't know whether to squash the feeling down or just let it flourish.
"No, I simply just asked would you fall in love with a human, because I wanted to know how much your father was potentially deluding himself thinking he was safe from anything like that."
She rose to her feet and brushed off the snow giving him a wryly grin.
"If I recall," she murmured in a soft and teasing way, "Your father was so sure your sister would eventually accept the courtship of one of those noble men who came and visited her. No offense Earendil, your Dad is a good guy at times, but he's not a very good judge of the heart."

"Considering Mother was the one to propose to him," Earendil commented dryly, "you are absolutely correct. But you're wrong about something. You didn't ask me if I would fall in love with a human, you asked me, if I did would I marry her."
He looked at her, slightly irritated that she was teasing him about this. "Besides that, you know I couldn't fall in love with a human. You know I'm in love. You know she isn't human. Why would you bring up such a topic, then?"

It was half tempting to protest and say she had been human once, though Earendil had a good point, but Lin simply wanted to know. She wanted to know if it was true because the chances of something like this were normally... nilt... nadda... never.
"I just wanted to know what my chances are," Lin admitted, "When I decided I felt more comfortable here in this world, rather than my own. Due to my incapability to understand socially peers outside my family, I also resigned myself to the fact I would have friends and nothing else."
Lin gave him her best everything-was-alright-grin, nothing was wrong, absolutely nothing at all.
"But if one person like you believes you could give up everything for someone else who is racially different, then maybe I have a one in a million chance. A lot better than being emotionally repressed, granted I have a funny feeling I'm a bit late in that area. I have no idea how I would feel if that one in a million would come along because I simply never thought about it until I realized not everyone thinks interracial marriages as something that would never happen."
It was the truth, granted she neglected to add he was that one in a million chance, but she was truthful. Lin had been faced with the impossible and now all her preparations were for nothing and she was at a complete lost of what to do.

Earendil nodded, but inside, his heart sank. She had already planned to settle in this world, and now thanks to him felt as though she had a chance at at love ... but that also meant that she didn't feel that way for him.
It shouldn't have surprised him, he reasoned. He had expected it. He knew she didn't love him, though he loved her so much. Still, for her to outright say it like that, that she would hope for 'someone like him', but who wasn't him ... meant that even if she had a one in a million chance, he was simply out of luck.
"I ... see," he murmured softly, turning away from her to hide the hurt in his eyes. "Well ... I hope for the best for you, then. With all my heart."
He started making a snowball, but his heart was no longer in it, and he ended up having to add snow himself rather than roll it around.
