Well what if Aang did die? What if he did, but then he was brought back to life like some kind of Frankenstein, but cyborgy. As they had said, Korra had barely any connection with the spiritual side of being the Avitar. So what if that was because Aangs spirit is all screwed up because of his body being alive. Also, why I think he is a cyborg, is because the blood bending didn't really work. In the flashback, Aang needed the Avitar state to reject the bending. But Amon didn't. And!, it would explain his mask! Everybody would recognize him if he didn't have it!

I have another theory about why Korra has trouble with spirituality and air bending. I also think Amon's spirit bending is not really that at all. He does not do what Aang does, which is put a hand on the victim's head and the victim's heart. Amon does it on the back of the victim's neck, which makes me think this is a more physical thing to do with the spine than with anything spiritual.
I believe the mask is about shock value. It makes him a symbol as opposed to the man, and therefore he is a lot more scary. That one is a pretty simple one to explain away.
I also don't want it to sound like I'm attacking you or anything. I like to debate things like this and this is all for fun, so don't take offense at my disagreeing with you mrgreen

Ah no, it's perfectly ok. I just like to try to figure thing out before it happens, and i have these same sort of conversations all the time.
I didn't know about the spirit bending thing, or about the heart thing. You could be right about the mask, it is sort of textbook psychology. But you never know, mwahahaha
Although sometimes I do know, because sometimes I can tell how a story is going to finish right after it starts. Idk, I'm just wierd like that...but I'm right alot of the time, do if I'm right about this, then you guys have to give me serious cred.
(Seeing as I haven't even finished the first series and have only been into it for a couple months)

Actually...I'll agree with you on the cyborg thing. Though I don't think it's Aang, the blood bending only partially worked. Maybe he's a steampunk cyborg?

I do like steam punk cyborg. But I want it to be something more convoluted than he is part machine, however that's just the kind of fan I am. I'm looking forward to finding out smile

anyway, I'm back from the dead. My first night on call was hellish. The calls started when i was trying to get to sleep and the calls didn't stop until about 8:00, when I was supposed to be there anyways for work... So all yesterday after work, I was unconscious.
