It really doesn't matter what saxnyou start on, all saxes have the same fingerings.
Good luck with whichever you choose!

firefoxgirl23 I have been playing the alto for about 6 yrs but my jazz teacher wants me to switch to tenor or baritone to balance the group out more. now its 3 altos one tenor and a bar/tenor player. sweatdrop i think u should play tenor, thats wat i play. u dont have to put much air in it, but then again, i have a bandmate who used to play alto, and now she plays bari, so its wichever one you want

Wafflez No Jutsu megamanfan66 Online Violation I play Baritone Sax and Alto sax I have a months worth of playing Bari (unfortunately for Bari you have to put my air into it so it's way harder for me to play Dx) and 4 years of Alto Hm! A month... well, I've got a whole year to get used to it and practice, and then a whole other year to actually play it in the band. [Also, I heard that the reeds are like 5 bucks. sweatdrop ] I went to Bari from Bass Clarinet. It wasn't that hard, I thought it was easier but from Alto to Bari.. The two boys whom dared to try it in normal band sound horrible. The reeds ARE expensive. Three 2 1/2 reads where 18 bucks. =7 I only had about 2 months to try it, a summer on Tenor, then instantly back on it for Jazz band when school started. whee whee yay tenors!!!

Yeah... Bari's not near as hard as I anticipated; the fingerings are the same, the keys are in the same places, and the air flow concept is very similar. Since I've played the alto for so long, it took me a little while to fix my mouth placement and be able to get a nice tone going. 3nodding But now I'm jammin. Our jazz band is playing a song that I get to solo on. It's called Moanin' by Charles Mingus. It's awesome! Here's a link if you want to listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__OSyznVDOY

I'd played sax for 10 years, most of it on alto, a few on tenor, and 2 years on barry, which was painful since the barry is like more then half my size lol

stuck_in_ur_teeth heh. i play the tenor, and if i use a really thin reed (2 1/2) i tend to honk more. i dunno why razz If you're honkin, you need a harder reed. I can't tell you the exact reason why you honk, I just know how to fix it. It may be your embouchure, but it's probably the hardness of the reed. Also, I use a rico royal for my bari, and even though they suck on the alto sax, they are really nice on the bari. It's really different for every sax.

My alto sax sucks pretty bad, and I'm gonna get a new sax, mouthpeice, reeds, and even ligature! I need a really nice sax that'll last me forever, a mouthpeice that does it all, and some extremely good reeds. ANY suggestions on any of those? whee biggrin
